5-0 out of 5 stars Best at-home diagnosis
My 25 year old will soon have a baby.I will be giving her this book.It helped my throughout her childhood. She still calls me to check symptoms and do a "mom" diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trusted for 19 years
I'm a 19 year old college student. When I was two years old my grandparents gave my parents a copy of the AMA Family Medical Guide. With two children and another on the way, they could easily see that this book would be used time and time again. I have early childhood memories of flipping through the pages of this book and looking at the pictures. I have later memories of flipping through the pages and reading about different conditions and diseases and general anatomy. And now, even though I dont have any children of my own, I still go back to this book to reference symptoms and facts that I hear about in day-to-day conversation. Symptom flow charts are excellent.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great medical reference book
Everyone should have a medical reference book at home (especially if you have kids), and this is a good one.

Editorial Review

"In our quest for a symptom-free existence, we make millions of unnecessary visits to doctors--as many as 70% of all visits are for new problems," write the authors, both physicians. "For every type of problem, there are some instances in which you should decide to see the doctor and some in which you should not." How do you decide? That's where Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars basic, need-to-know information
Find your problem and go through their simple charts to see what you should do. It's very simple, so there is not a lot of depth. Treat minor burns, scrapes, fevers, colds, etc. There are also an emergency and sexuality sections. This is by no means an exhaustive book of symptoms and diagnoses, but still good to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Care of Yourself by Vickery et al.
This work has a variety of symptoms to known disease processes5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Useful (Refers to Sixth Edition)
My father is a 79-year-old retiree from a major automobile manufacturer, and his former employer sent this book to all its retirees. My father finds it extremely useful. He often uses it, not instead of going to the doctor, but the day before doing so.He tracks down his symptoms in this well-organized book, and then is able to better discuss his concerns with the doctor. The book does not try to replace a doctor, and most of the handy diagnostic flow-charts have several endpoints labeled with "Call your physician".Another way this book can be useful is just after a doctor visit, when you can get clear explanations of whatever the physician diagnosed. This book also contains good basic health maintenance and healthy living advice. We have the Sixth Edition and use it often. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY PLEASED
JOHN HOPKINS SYMPTOMS & REMEDIES IS A VERY HELPFUL BOOK.
3-0 out of 5 stars good overview
This book is a good reference for looking up symtoms but one shouldn't use it as their only source for information regarding the remedies.I must disagree that using a wrist-support while typing should be used to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).All that will do is simply prolong and worsen the condition. In summary, by restricting the movement of the wrist while typing you are allowing muscles in a small area to be overused one way while allowing other muscles to relax. 5-0 out of 5 stars A family library "must have"!
I purchased my first copy of this book back in the mid 80's.I'm now working on replacing my 2nd copy because it no longer has the cover and is VERY well used between myself and my children. It's saved many anunnecessary trip to the doctor and also ensured good communication for thetimes we did need to see the doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars People think I'm a genius because of this book.
I once had a housekeeper who was sick for several months. Finally I made her sit down and tell me her symptoms.I consulted this book and couldn't tell from her symptoms what she had -- but I knew it was either gallstones,a bleeding ulcer, or pancreatitis.I made her leave my house and go to thedoctor.A week later, she called me from the hospital. Her gallbladderhad been removed, her bleeding ulcer had been repaired, and she was undertreatment for pancreatitis.Every time I use this book, the resultsblow me away.I've had to stop telling doctors what rare disease I havebecause the opthamologist was so irate when I diagnosed my iritis before hedid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and informative.
The book is organized. It is easy to find what you are looking for.It is a book that you will use frequently. This is my second copy and I have purchased one for a family member. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld's latest book
Dr. Rosenfeld is a very knowledgeable and common sense doctor and I value his opinions.

5-0 out of 5 stars So you're sick; do you need a doctor, a lawyer or this book?
Yeah, welcome to the world of modern medical care. Depending on how good your medical plan is, or even how good your doctor is at listening to you, you may or may NOT get the care you need and are, I might add, paying for.2-0 out of 5 stars Supplement it with a medical handbook
I found this book disappointing.I started by looking up breast cancer, a most common female problem. It did not appear in the list of chapters or in the index.I then checked all 27 general references under cancer. In many of the pages just the word 'cancer' appeared with no more information.I could not find any information on breast cancer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Full of all sorts of practical ideas that you can use at home.Though it is written by 2 top doctors, it is easy to read and use.I have managed to treat myself and my family with all of the fantastic information, and since it is from the School of Public Health, you know these people are not out to sell your stuff or glorify themselves the way some doctors on ego-trips do.An essential reference book that everyone should own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference guide
If you need a clear, well-organized, and up-to-date guide to your health , this is the perfect book for you. Almost all the general medical knowledge a person needs is covered here.On one page, for example, you learn how to evaluate your blood pressure. On another, you get a quick lesson on glaucoma - its symptoms, its causes, and how to deal with it. Should you have to consult a doctor, you will have instant access to some crucial information. Do yourself a favor and put this handbook in your reference collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough useful information
Not a bad book for just general purposes, but I find it to be lacking in any depth. While it includes many different forms of treatment for some common health problems, it doesn't give enough information on the illness, such as cause or symptons. Those things are just touched on briefly. And some of the treatments described, I find are highly questionable...though of course I am no doctor. But in the case of a Breech Baby I really can't see how taking 1 tablet a day of Pulsatilla 200c, for 3 days, can make a baby turn the right way up. The book is full of way out, unusual treatments that most people would never use. Sure there is practical advice, but that is mostly just common sense. The orthodox advice given just tells you what pills or treatment a doctor would give you...painkillers etc. Ok as a simple reference, but don't expect to find out from it what your symptoms may be of. Because you won't get much help here. ... Read more
