5-0 out of 5 stars Can be a training tool
Besides using this at home, I have found it can be used as a training tool in a heathcare setting.Medical receptionists can use it to expand their medical terminology. The easy to use format is great for the lay person or a health care professional support staff. It is great. Coleen, Healthcare Administrator from Seattle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The New American Medical Dictionary & HealthManual
Robert Rothenberg's Medical Dictionary & Health Manual is a veryuseful book not only as a dictionary but as a manual covering many healthrelated topics that are beneficial to all health care workers.MyHealth Careers students in high school purchase these each year for use inclass for studying Anatomy & Physiology, using them for term papers, and as reference to the many health related topics found in the"manual" section. My students have found these very useful asI do as a Health Careers instructor. There are many labeled diagramsthroughout the text and useful charts in the manual. The easy languagethis dictionary uses makes it useful to a wide range of health workers.Itcan be a useful quick reference for a nurse or as a great learning tool forstudents. This dictionary not only defines words but is a great manualincluding sections on the latest Medicare guidelines, medical insurancepolicies, and Social Security programs. As a health instructor I highlyrecommend obtaining this very useful health dictionary and manual. At thisprice, no one can lose. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is interesting. It gives you an array of suggestions broken down by topic. It covers your entire family and pets. There are notes from doctors covering the suggestions on the topics and I thought it got out of hand a bit there. But it gives you something to think about and go from there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try a few of these helpful suggestions.
We have all heard of various wives tales, and home remedies, and most likely tried one or two when we have had an ailment. This book is compiled by Prevention magazines. Compiling approximately 140 various ailments that we all have. Each topic is given several pages of suggestions. Since its Prevention magazine they do seem to be plausible, and not harmful in anyway. Often the text is accompanied by text doctors have written on their suggestions. Book covers topics for men, women, children, and even your pets. I found the book education, and the suggestions very helpful. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in this book
This book is clear, easy to read, and has a good break-down of signs, what to do, when to call the doctor. However, it's lacking in information. The entire reason I own books like this is to have a reference to turn to in the event something is happening to me or my family and to find out what's wrong. Both times I've referred to it, it hasn't contained any information on what my actual issues were (acid reflux causing chest pain and sores in my daughter's mouth being caused by Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease, which is a common viral infection in kids). If you're planning to purchase two medical reference books, make this one of them. But don't buy it if you just want a know-all, end-all medical book, because this is certainly not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your reference library
this book covers a wide array of common medical problems and issues. It is easy to understand and easy to find what you need.It has step by step instructions, warnings, questions to ask Dr, and recommendations on hundreds of conditions and is a must for every household. There is also a handy "signs and symptoms index " that tells you what may be wrong. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource!
This book is an excellent reference and extremely useful family resource. I use it frequently, with great results and great confidence! It contains just about anything you need to research. This book has helped me in "self-diagnosis" several times and in ruling out possible self diagnoses many other times! I've found it useful for women, men, and children. I highly recommend The Medical Advisor for your family's home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect !
This book has consistently provided me with great information...an excellent starting point before contacting your doctor or for an illness you just want tot understand better. There are some common drugs that I couldn't find, but usually could cross reference them to find some mention in the book, if not in the drug info section. It seems to be stronger in the alternative medicine category than the prescriptions, but overall info on general illnesses and symptoms is incredibly comprehensive. This is the one book that should be on every family's shelf.5-0 out of 5 stars User Friendly Family Medical Guide

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Except....
The book is well-documented and gives complete and clear explanations of diseases, causes, and possible solutions - ultimately suggesting which product is a natural way to releive symptoms and improve health. That's fine, except they don't do enough to alert you that fixing one thing may be bad for another. While you can talk live to an "advisor" anytime, they are not medical doctors and may not be aware of negative consequences of an item. For example, if you have burning with urination, the book and advisors may lead you to take the potent "CRANMAX" which may be excellent for urinary tract infection. But if the burning is from prostrate problems, a heavy dose of cranberry juice (quite acidic) is not a good idea.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Baby Boomer's Survival Manual- A "Must Have" Book
As the largest block of Americans approaches the ranks of senior status, we face an economy that is incapable of taking care of us we become feeble incompetent old people, especially when there will be more people over the age of 50 in the USA than under the age of 50 by the year 2025!!We owe it to ourselves and our children to be strong, healthy, vital seniors capable of thinking for ourselves, strong enough to carry our own groceries, healthy enough to function independently and if we need to, continue to work well past 65 to support ourselves. The only way to do this is with the Prevention of Disease, not by treating the symptoms of degenerative diseases after they occur. This comprehensive text is extremely valuable for anyone interested in saving their own future, from the medical person to the average consumer of nutritional products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive in easy to understand language
This is the most comprehensive guide to health related issues available on the market. There is a more authorative edition of the Merck Manual, but at 1700 pages this edition will keep you occupied. It covers the broad range of illnesses with handy diagnoses. But, what I like most is the children's section, which not only fills you on all the ailments that plague little ones, but the vast array of problems that can occur during pregnancy. While much of this information may provide more anxiety than assurance, it is worth knowing, especially if going through the experience of child birth for the first time. The children's section also has good information on health and nutrition. It quite literally covers the gamut of health related issues and no home should be without it. But, don't get carried away with self-diagnosesIt can be frightening!

It even suggests temporary remedies and puts you in charge of how you are treated by the medical profession. This is a must have book to keep around! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Your Homework, Doctor!
As a along time sufferer of Fibromyalgia (FMS), I was horrified to see Dr. Edell haul out that old and thoroughly disproven idea that it is a psychological illness. I am a psychiatric social worker, and have had umpteen tests, all normal. Many studies have shown no more psych problems than in any pain syndrome. This illness has ruined the lives of 10 million (mostly) women in the prime of their lives. Hey Doc, read the functional MRI studies, the SPECT and PET scan studies, the cardiomyopathy studies, the cortisol stimulation studies, the somatatomedin C/growth hormone studies, and I could go on an on. It must be sheer laziness not to know the research overwhelmingly proves the reality of this illness. And while you're at it, read the World Health Organization's position paper on FMS, in which they state it is one of the three top morbidity illnesses affecting the human race. We are in enough pain and misery already without having an ignorant doctor casually trashing us in a book. This makes me wonder how many other errors are in this book. Shame on you!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper
As a mother of 2, this book will join my other more traditional health books on the book shelf. My husband and I really enjoyed the "readability" of this book.We like the family health aspect as opposed to the childrens health bookswe already own.Reading Dr. Edell is like getting a second opinion.Wecan also relate tohis common sense take on things, since this is how we live our lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too superficial to be worthwhile
Name a topic. ANY topic. Type that into a search engine, and you can learn far more in a few minutes than you can from Dr. Edell's superficial treatment of too many topics in this book. Edell is a generalist, not a specialist. As such, he knows a little about almost everything, and evidently not much about anything. In fact, Dr. Edell seems to possess a gift for superficiality. (Perhaps because he has been doing his radio show for so long, since radio hosts generally tend to gloss over topics to "keep the show moving.") I've read similar books of equal length by other authors, and even though they covered just as many (or more) topics as Edell did, they managed to convey some useful, in-depth information. Dr. Edell seems to have difficulty expressing himself concisely, which explains why he can say so little in so much space.Read more

Editorial Review

The handwriting of doctors is notoriously illegible, but little attention gets paid to another form of frequent, albeit unintentional, alienation: medical language. Starting with abbreviations and moving on to a full dictionary of medical terminology, Charlotte Isler translates well over 1,000 terms and more than 500 abbreviations into standard, understandable English. You might not have known, offhand, that BAC stands for "blood alcohol concentration," that phlebitis is an inflammation of a vein, and that a smear, far from being a smudge of dirt or a type of hors d'oeuvre, is technical talk for "a thin layer of tissue or fluid spread on a glass side for microscopic examination." Practical for families, handy for medical students, and a pleasure for medical enthusiasts, Isler's dictionary takes some of the fear of the unknown out of medical jargon. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of consumer health information
As a consumer health librarian I can say that this is the absolute bible when it comes to selecting health-related materials. Not just a list of books, this is a wide-ranging source of well-written, well-consideredreviews of almost all types of materials (books, CD-ROMs, databases, pamphlets, magazines/newsletters, Spanish-language materials, and more) forthe layperson, plus selected sources written for the health professionalthat would be helpful in the well-stocked consumer health library.Thereis an extensive section of reviews of complementary/alternative therapymaterials, something the faint-of-heart might not have wanted to tackle, but Rees accomplishes it with aplomb.Conspicuous by its absence is a listof consumer health videos, but this would be a huge task in and of itself! 5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive, current consumer health guide
This is the source that medical librarians turn to when developing consumer health collections. The absolute best starting place for selecting consumer health titles! ... Read more
