4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
The book gives details on every food group for your blood type. You can look at all four blood types at a glance in the charts given.I just wish there was more information about how to tell if you were a non-secretor or a secretor.Otherwise, good book to have in your library. The husband and I have changed our eating to be according to our blood type as suggested, and within two weeks we could both feel a difference.More energy, less bloating or indigestion. It's a good book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Physical Results May Vary!
I was considering adopting a vegitarian diet due to my many health problems and my mother told me about this book and the benefits her friends have had. So I bought the book and the information was quite facinating. It was like reading my physical autobiography, so I started the diet and I've been on it for 4 weeks and I have had no weight loss. Why..I don't know, but my energy levels have dropped significantly although I must say that my overall shape has changed. It appears that either I'm toning or I'm loosing muscle mass. The books were an easy read, but the thing I find most confusing is this concept of using herbs for ailments and overal health, there are sooooo many herbs out there for every kind of physical issue good or bad and I'm confused as to just how many pills can one person take?! I want to buy the right kind of vitamins and minerals for my body, but even on the website there are 5 or more kinds of pills that I should take, not to mention the shakes, bars and extra health meds that they recommend. I'm sorry to say that I have learned why I am sensitive to certain foods and why I've gained weight, but as to how to fix the problem, there seem to be too many pills and sometimes conflicting pieces of advice. In all, I'm more confused than I was when I was in the dark. So to all of you who have been successful with this diet, BRAVO to you, but for those of you who have bodies that are far more complex than diets and "all natural" foods, I feel you and maybe we'll find the REAL solution someday together.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was okay
I bought the book thinking that it would help me learn how to eat for my blood type but I find it very difficult to follow and difficult to read it. This is more like an index for health problems and if you are susseptible to them by what your blood type is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Beware of CD-ROM
This series of books have been very helpful in my practice.I currently use the 6th edition.I was excited that the Spanish translation for handouts is included on the CD-ROM.However, there is one crucial difference:With the 6th edition the contents can be INSTALLED on your computer (and the CD then stored). Then topics can be searched and printed per PDF files/Acrobat reader. In the 6th edition, each topic print out is ONE page.HOWEVER, with the 7th edition, the CD-ROM MUST BE in the cd drive to work. This ties up that drive and is very inconvenient in a busy practice, if you have other uses for that drive. In the 7th edition, the printouts can be THREE pages long, consuming much more paper! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and politically correct.
Having a background in medicine, I am very disappointed. This book can be confusing and does not accurately or properly deal with serious health issues of the day. While subtle, it gives a free pass to destructive activities in the name of not offending while ignoring studies that show clearly show fatalities resulting from destructive life styles and beliefs. In my opinion, it gives the field of medicine a black eye and can't help but prompt the educated reader to question the validity of the writers. It is poorly written. Not the type of book I would recommend to my students or residents.

5-0 out of 5 stars medical information
Extremely helpfull manual. Goes into detail regarding many subjects, easy to read for a layman.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of PR from Merck but still helpful ....
Despite its latest problems, Merck still dominates the drug market along with the other biggies. The vast majority of its drugs are effective and perfectly safe - though not without risk factors. As such, it is useful for patients to understand exactly what those drugs are, what they do, what dangers are present. This book will help patients understand. To a large degree what is contained in these pages are all present in package inserts but there is also a good deal of addtional information. It can be helpful and anything that helps one attain better health is worth a few bucks! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Doctors Book of Home Remedies
This book is very informative and well organized. It is easy to read and gives excellent, helpful, detailed solutions for nearly every imaginable medical problem, as well as information on when to see a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a doctor but reads like one!
I bought this book after getting fed up taking myself to the doctor to hear that it is just a bad cold or something that could be remedied at home. I had the wonderful experience of letting myself get addicted to nasal decongestant. Not the saline spray! I know that my body can become resistant to antibiotics and the side effects are scary! 5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper than a doctor, and more fun!
This book is an excellent source of information, with thousands of direct-to-the-point pieces of advice that are apparently effective (at least those remedies that I tried worked.) The doctors' advice is clear, direct and absent of techincal medical terms. It's a "do this" and "here's why" kind of advice rather than a lot of theory.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My over-all favorite
I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent home reference
This is an excellent book overall and is the text for the National Center for Homeopathy's study group course.Dr. Panos gives verbose, anecdotal images of the differences between the different remedies for a given ailment, as well as good general background on homeopathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An empowering book for everyone
Of all the homeopathic books written for the general public, this is one of the most useful. If you've suffered a minor injury, or come down with a cold, flu or earache, or if you are having an upset stomach, this book willquickly guide you to the correct remedy. It is easily understood by themedical layperson, and it will give you solid knowledge of how to treatyourself and others in a safe, natural way, without the risks, side-effectsand costs of conventional drugs.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save you money!
If you consider taking OTCs pain relieviers and managing stress "home remedies," waste...er, spend your money on this overhyped collection of the same-old, same-old. If you want "real" home remedies, stick with the original books -- Home Remedies 1 and 2. This book is weak in its reporting and writing and fails to mention many of the current "in the news" health concerns (and promised solutions) for the elderly.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you think Ibuprofen is a "Home Remedy" You'll Love This.
I found this book condescending and weak on useful health advice.Despite the "home remedies" title, the book's solution for just about anything that ails you is Ibuprofen. I expected far more emphasis onnon-prescription health solutions from a book with the title "homeremedies".The book's heavy emphasis on the side effects ofprescription drugs made it clear that the authors assumed that the averagesenior is a prescription drug junkie and there is nothing in this book thatwill help such junkies kick their habits. The "Jhons Hopkins Family Health Book" is the ultimate home reference tool to help you become an active partner in your family's health. Written and designed to be clear and readable, stands out for its accessibility, usefulness, and detailed coverage of health issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its genre
I have used this book for about five years to do introductory and background research.I own or have examined the leading competitors (Harvard, Cornell, Mayo guides). The Johns Hopkins guide is consistently the best.It provides concise and precise information and is clearly written. It is written for the intelligent and literate reader, and is less illustrated than some of the competitors, but the information content is consistently superior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This book is very informative and has helped me numerous times to make correct judgements.5-0 out of 5 stars The Medical Advisor- best book I own!
I absolutely treasure this book and recommend that every household have it! I have turned to it time and time again and share it with family and friends. It is easy to understand, thorough and most of all easy to use. I feel more at ease knowing that I can understand my body better and can actually do something to help prevent and or cure myself. The best part is that it covers both conventional as well as alternative treatments for each ailment in just a few pages. I must say that everyone in my household has used it at one time or another and it is almost never up on the shelf...even when no one is sick, someone at home is reading it to understand the body better! It's that well written!!I wish Time Life would come out with an updated edition as I cannot find the book anymore and I'd like to purchase a copy for siblings who want one of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Home Needs The Medical Advisor
I bought The Medical Advisor in 1997 and it's one of the most important books I own. I use it to look up my symptoms whenever I get sick and check out all my medicine in the large drug reference section. This book is wonderfully comprehensive. Each topic is covered in four pages or less. In ten to fifteen minutes you find out what you need to know. The text iswell written and consistently uses language everyone can understand. That'swhy every home can use The Medical Advisor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best medical encyclpedia/guide I have ever seen

4-0 out of 5 stars Certainly another good medical reference book.
This edition the AMA encyclopedia (2003) is fully based on its first edition (1989), so the review of the first applies to the second. The 1989 had better illustrations on the whole, but their editors often included inappropriate depictions for no apparent reasons. This irresponsibility carried over into discussions particularly concerning ethical issues, such as abortion (unfortunately, this is something we have come to expect from the medical industry). It is evident the editors had a very large axe to grind when discussing medically induced death therapy that is applied to our unborn citizens. There was neither a mature discussion of the particularly disastrous effect on our black communities through America's legalized and ongoing killing of babies; nor a serious review of the more than ample documentation concerning the Abortion-Breast Cancer (ABC) link, nor an assessment of the emotion scarring of the widespread Post Abortion Syndrome.Similarly, its discussion of sodomy inexplicably still utilized the discredited and criminally derived Kinsey report, and did not give adequate warning about the inherent dangers of that lifestyle.By overlooking these deficiencies, much good knowledge is available in the work. This new 2003 version includes significant and helpful updates since the 1989 publication.

The AMA Encyclopedia is invaluable. It's complete, detailed and well layed out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic home resource
This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example.Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.

I used this reference so much that my copy eventually fell apart. It's clear, concise, and authoritative. But it's very outdated. A newer version came out in 2003, which I was happy to order.

4-0 out of 5 stars newer edition has slightly different name
The newer (2003) ediion is called "American Medical Association Complete Medical Encyclopedia".

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Too Old
I didn't realize that this book has not been updated since its copyright--1989.The date of information probably is 1988 or earlier. While this book is clear and well-organized, anything that's 14 years old has little credibility with me.I feel that I made a mistake in getting it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST OF THE BEST
I have over the years purchased the FOUR top rated home medical guides in my quest to find the best. By best I mean the one that meets all of my families needs. I tried to be as unbiased as possible in examining all four books, concentrating my efforts by comparing them for organization and content. Sadly all four have their own shortcomings. All provide solid a reference for home/family health. But some are far better than others. I rated all based on a max. of five stars possible. I compared all as to content and completeness of info provided. Actually comparing the info provided for various illnesses and diseases.3-0 out of 5 stars A solid basic intorductory encyclopedia of health
This book is worth owning and I am glad I have it.It is not a substitute, obviously, for seeing a doctor nor is it a substitute for solid research on the internet. But for basic problems, the information is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
As a personal user of this book and as someone that sells this book in bulk to employers and health plans looking to distribute it to their employees and members, I have extensive experience with seeing its effectiveness in positively aiding the decision to care for various medical conditions at home versus utilizing a doctor or medical facility. The book is a simple to use tool and generates a positive financial impact in terms of cost savings to companies desiring a reduction in their health care spending. If you are interested in reaching me to discuss volume purchases [...]

My employer gave me an earlier edition of this book as part of a wellness plan.I literally wore it out! It's weird to try to call a doctor's office if you're not sure you need a doctor, and this book helps you figure out if you need to go in or not.Highly reccomended ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEAN UP
i've enjoyed reading the material which gives advice on
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading even if you don't have any white vineger
This book can help just about anyone in cleaning anything around the house.Using baking soda, vodka (!), and other assundry items provides one with enjoyable reading as well as imaginative jobs to do in the bathroom, kitchen, and the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars ZANY AT TIMES, BUT, HEY, IF IT WORKS DON'T KNOCK I
Most of us know that common househeld products have multiple uses. For example, vinegar and baking soda are almost staples for solving a dozen and one different household problems. However, some of the solutions you learn in this book might seem right off the wall! Alka-Seltzer to clean a toilet bowl - and just why would you WANT to use Alka-Seltzer?Jello, as a foot deodorizer - no doubt, designed just for those who like that squishy feeling between their toes. Alright, those may seem a little extreme, but the book truly does have it's helpful hints and merits. There is no guarantee that all these little tidbits of information are going to work, and some I would dare not try. If I ever suggested to my darling husband that he shave with Reddi-Whip, he might think I was getting just a wee bit kinky! Some of the tips may seem far-fetched, zany and bizarre but others actually do work; for the price of the book, it is still a good deal. ...
