5-0 out of 5 stars Validate Your Pain-Exposing the Chronic Pain Cover-Up
Run, limp, order it online- but DEFINTELY obtain this book ASAP if you are a pain survivor, work with pain patients or if a loved one suffers from chronic pain. This book is outstanding and sincere. I use it as an invaluable resource and I use it for emotional support. The approach is right-on-target and empowering. The utter contempt pain patients face on a daily basis from the medical community, indifferent (sometimes frustrated) and ignorant doctors and nurses, acquaintances, friends and family is appalling and barbaric. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Patients AND Healthcare Professionals!
I have been anticipating the publication of the second edition of Validate Your Pain! Exposing the Chronic Pain Cover-Up (VYP) by Allan F. Chino, Ph.D. and Corinne Dille Davis, M.D., and as soon as I saw it available [on Amazon.com!], I ordered it- several copies, as a matter of fact!I am pleased to be one of the people who wrote a review of the first edition of VYP for inclusion in the second edition: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Practical
I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!
I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not First Choice
Although this book shares some good information and common sense, if you yourself are dealing with a hearing loss (as the book suggests), you will not find an unbiased opinion here. Stressing oralism (lipreading and listening with assistive listening devices), there is no talk of sign language whatsoever herein. If you're losing your hearing, but vow to never admit you're deaf (when the loss becomes that severe) and vow that you will stay in the "hearing world" at all costs, this is the book for you to read as you live in denial. However, if you are truly open to learning about every option offered you as a hard of hearing or deaf person, don't waste your time. That's just this deafie's opinion. :o) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...
This book was interesting in that it provided a good insight as to how a 'one-legged' person adapted after the amputation.Unfortunately, this book was in serious need of an editor, or at the very least, a copyeditor.Though the material overall is interesting and useful, you have to wade through quite a bit of rambling and repetition to get to it.The 'poems' are nothing more than restatements of the previous paragraphs in fragment form.I did like the drawings;they helped me imagine the positions and assistive devices the author used. And I very much admire the author for what he has gone through!I hate mentioning anything negative about this book, because I do appreciate that the author took the time to share his experience.I just wish he had someone edit the book for errors and conciseness.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Role Hope Plays in Sustaining Quality of Life
I have read this author's books before, and I genuinely like his descriptions about the medical profession. This book particularly explains the tensions that physicians face in the conflict between being frank with patients and yet not taking hope away from them, even in serious circumstances.I believe it's easy for people, when they are well, to say that they would fight an illness with no holds barred, but when reality strikes, that dedication may falter or fail. This book does not gloss over the trials of cancer and other debilitating illnesses, but helped me understand in many ways why different patients react in radically differing ways when facing a crisis of their health. As so many baby boomers are aging themselves or facing the crises of aging parents, this book can be a godsend. But it's not just for those of us who are older. It's a wonderful read by a very interesting, compelling writer. ... Editorial Review

Imagine Charles Bukowskiwith a degree in business administration, rambling across the United States and holdingforth on business and the drinking life. Timothy Donohue is literate and intelligent, he'sfond of quoting Emerson, and his head is bursting with novel ideas about how to make the economy work better. He's also blind drunk much of the time. When lucid he recounts his misadventures inhis journal. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a diary
This is not a coherent, well-structured narrative. It's a first-person account of an intelligent person disabled by alcoholism. He's an individual. He doesn't represent everyone in his category. Its value is in the intimate look inside the mind of an addict and how he makes decisions. I was especially interested in the lies he tells himself to get different effects. For example, he says, to stop drinking for two days he must *decide* to stop for a month. His description of the pain that drives him to drink is vivid and heartbreaking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Diary of a Wasted Talent
One reviewer compared this book to George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London," a gritty look at the lives of transients in France and England in the 1930s. In truth, this book and its author bear moreresemblance to Ted Kaczynski and his anti-technology"Manifesto."4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and puzzling look at a very strange life!
In this autobiography, Donohue chronicles his peregrinations across the USA while drinking himself silly. He gets a few lucky breaks, some money here and there, a little success, but he drinks it all away.In the end,the book snaps shut abruptly with no conclusion, no climax, no denouement, nothing.Just snaps shut in a very odd way.But then it is just a peekinto one man's life, the life of an alcoholic.I definitely had moresympathy for homeless people, even alcoholic homeless people, after readingthis book. The potential reader should be warned that it contains a lot ofeconomic theory that Donohue, who actually graduated from college with abusiness degree, develops. So that stuff is a bit dry and you can safelyskip over most of it. ...
