Editorial Review

Barbara D'Amato's books about freelance Chicago journalist Cat Marsala celebrate the quaint idea that what somebody writes in a newspaper or a magazine can have some effect, can make a difference, can even tip the scales of justice from time to time. We all know how ludicrous this idea is, but while we're reading D'Amato's latest, which finds the feisty Cat involved in linked cases of spousal abuse and high-level police department dirty pool, all doubts are happily suspended. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars where's the beef?
This is my first D'Amatao novel and I had to force myself to finsih it. There wasn't enough suspense, there wasn't enough real investment for theprotagonist, for me to be all that concerned about the plot. But it seemsthat the author has great potential and look forward to reading one of hermany other works.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic author who writes a great mystery series
Chicago police officer Shelley Daniello and her partner Bradford Hubner respond to a domestic violence call.Shelley gets to the scene ahead of Bradford and sees a fellow officer Ben Jurack swinging a knife towards his wife, Marie, who happens to be Shelley's sister.Shelley swears she gave Ben a warning which he ignored. She fired and killed Ben. Her partner arrives on the scene after the killing. The press has a field day because of the incident. They go so far as to inconsistently accuse the Chief of Detectives Harold McCoo of either a cover-up or unfair treatment of a woman.Leaks from the department itself is making it easier on the media to prosecute Shelley and Harold. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
I've not only had the pleasure of reading this book, but I've met it's author. She's the real thing. She absolutely shines. She walks a couple of feet off the ground.Ms. Newborn is not only a survivor, but a person who has happiness to share with others. Her book offers incredible insight to those who have either experienced a stroke or know someone who has.She gave me a clear understanding of aphasia and how strokes effect people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for stroke survivors!
I read quite a few books about strokes following my own, but only wanted to own two. This book, which was a gift from a dear friend, provided such inspiration during my recovery. I still read it from time to time becauseit continues to be a touchstone for me. I've always loved the poem"Ithaca" which is referenced in the title but it's taken on aspecial meaning since reading this book. Thank you for writing it, Barbara.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not alone!
This is the best book on Fibromyalgia to make a connection rather than diagnosis and treatment, which for me has been the best treatment thus far!It is so full of hope and life and realism from people like me with Fibromyalgia. It helps to know I'm not the only one in this world with a frustrating invisible illness.I especially like the poetry and am grateful to the authors for compiling and publishing this much needed and very refreshing book on something that is usually vaguely written about by people without the true knowledge of what this illness really feels like.Thank you so much, and I am sure that a series of books like this could be accomplished and I would buy every one!

I purchased this book a few months ago and read it the same day. I laid it down on my desk, with no particular feelings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful !

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Suspense Tale
How a mixed cast of deaf and hearing students signed, sang and danced together to perform Leonard Bernstein's complex musical "West Side Story" is a fascinating chronicle of ingenuity and determination. 5-0 out of 5 stars Get Cool Boy! Read Deaf Side Story
Fans of theatre, American Sign Language and Deaf culture and/or multicultural studies will LOVE Deaf Side Story. It's a tale of the hard work, perseverance, and joy that is educational theatre, peppered with the challenges of a multi-lingual company of players. The dynamics of Deaf and hearing actors, students and theatre professionals make a riveting story. Mr. Rigney's inside view of the production makes this a truly personal piece - readers get to know the players personally and become almost as attached to the outcome as the cast and production team. I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars An exhilarating read!
Probably because Mark Rigney is primarily novelist, writer of short stories, and playwright, this book gallops along as if it were fiction, and keeps the reader's interest riveted cover to cover. The story is of an extraordinary theatrical accomplishment: a production of West Side Story with the Anglo gang-the Jets-played by hearing actors, and the rival Puerto Ricans-the Sharks-by deaf students. The venue was a makeshift theater at a small liberal arts college in Jacksonville, Illinois; the town happens to be also the home of a school for the deaf. The director of the show was Diane Brewer, who is young, ambitious and very brave-and, at the time, pregnant..Apart from the descriptions of the nail-biting drama of getting the show to work-don't forget we are talking about a musical no less-the book offers a rare glimpse into Deaf culture and the fascinating languages used to communicate. The final triumph of the play was not only a rousing good performance with standing-room-only audiences, but also a definite breakthrough in the barriers that separate the worlds of the hearing and the Deaf.Get this book for an exhilarating read, and for a learning experience with no pain.My only sadness is that there were too few photographs-which caused me regretfully to drop one star. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Connection or connivance ?
Until now, the accepted dogma was "time flies when you're having fun !" If one wanted to live a life which appeared to last forever, boredom was the answer.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read
EVERYONE should read this book. What your doctors, in fact, what the health-care community as a whole, won't tell you is that cancer and other life-threatening diseases CAN be PREVENTED.
5-0 out of 5 stars Research-based enhancement of health
It has been my privilege to have known Dr. Tanelian for a number of years and to have witnessed some of the extraordinary research and care that has gone into the development of his concepts that underlie this book.In my view this is an immensely valuable work that presents a dramatically new approach toward the prevention of disease and the enhancement of health. His conclusions result from an innovative and creative synthesis of a great body of highly regarded peer reseach that has been undertaken over a period of several decades. Most work in preventative medicine has been focused narrowly on specific diseases and in many cases with little or no underlying research. Here is a research-based approach toward improving the communication and interconnection of the cells of our bodies that promotes the functioning of all of our cells as a unified whole.Dr. Tanelian's synthesis of rearch on our cellular functioning leads to a well supported and unique plan for enhanced health through diet, exercise, nutritional supplements and altered lifestyle. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and thought provoking
In the late 1960s, twenty-three year old Barbara Webster began to experience problems with walking, with speech, with fatigue, and a host of other problems. When examining doctors and neurologists could find no explanation for her problem, Ms. Webster began experiencing hostility from people who believed that her problems were psychosomatic problems brought on by stress and poor choices, if not mere malingering.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
This is a de rigeur read for those facing up to a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Ms. Webster tackles the problems of having MS with a searing intelligence and in depth analysis based on her own personalexperiences. Her thoughts struck a chord with my own experiences and gaveme a lot of help in coming to terms with my own diagnosis. She addressesnot only the personal experience of having MS but also widens the scope toinclude its effects of the people around the MS diagnosee and how societyin general view people with the disease. She doesn't dodge any of thedifficult issues and writes in a clear and easy to read manner. I cannotapplaud her efforts highly enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So interesting
I have an Asperger's syndrome diagnosis and some sort of shadow Tourette's traits.I loved this book.Antonio Hernandez is a fabulous writer. The previous reviewer compared him to Temple Grandin. I have some complaints about Temple Grandin, though she's very sincere in what she says.I don't have any complaints about Antonio Hernadez's statements about Autism or Tourette's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning theory emerges from brilliant study
Bishop E. Antonio Hernandez has written a book the scope of which has only been equalled by Dr. Temple Grandin. From ancient histories of Tourette's and autism to humorous mini-biographies of famous sufferers, Bp. Hernandez really delivers. Bp. Hernandez has given us a fantastic guided tour through the worlds of these awful neurological diseases, and he surprises the reader with what may be the biggest theory yet introduced in the field. Anyone who is in any way touched by Tourette's, autism or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder CANNOT afford to miss this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovering from and Avoiding Joint Injury
Summary:This book contains the results of a successful randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled test of nutrional supplements and exercise to treat knee problems. The results are formulated into an 8 week program of Knox NutraJoint (10 oz. a day fortified with vitamin C and calcium), exercise, stretching, and weight control. You also receive directions for how to work with physicians and alternative therapies for joint problems, and to build a program of maintaining joint health. In the test, many subjects improved on both this regimen and on the placebo, but those with moderate pain showed significant improvement and greater flexibility from the program test.5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life!
My joints have hurt me for the last 5 years, they were so bad that I could not even walk my dog. I read about this book in a newspaper article and thought I would try out the program. There are simple tests to get you started and help make you aware of lifestyle changes that need to be made. A great suggestion in the book is adding supplements to your diet. The author suggested using a joint supplement, Knox NutraJoint, which he used in a study last year.I have been following the 8 week program and adding the NutraJoint to my morning OJ and my joints feel better than ever. Better yet, Maddie and I are back out on the pavement with no pain. Thanks Dr. Rippe! ... Read more
