5-0 out of 5 stars Julie Silver is as remarkable a writer as she is a physician
"Chronic Pain and the Family" is written for the family and friends of someone who suffers from severe pain all of the time. This is not to say that someone who is in pain won't benefit from this book; it's a book that serves all well and is applicable to all kinds of pain. Despite that, Dr.Silver adresses the important impact that someone's pain has on his family and friends. It is not possible that those who surround a situation are not affected by it in many ways. Why should it be different for chronic pain? Silver's book takes us from the very definition of pain, through all elements of pain, children, teens, the extended family, medication and potential addiction, depression, diagnosis as well as alternative therapy. Dr. Silver is knowledgable about the subject and seemingly still aware that the patients about whom she writes are human. This is an excellent book for anyone who has been in pain or knows someone who has pain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lower back pain relief & more!
Ways to heal chronic lower back pain without drugs or surgery.5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-read" do-it-yourself reference
Informatively written by Harry S. Oxenhandler (a medical doctor skilled in the treatment of chronic pain), The Humpty Dumpty Syndrome: Life Yourself From Back Pain Without Drugs Or Surgery cogently advises readers on how they can effectively combat chronic back pain. Addressing the problems of pelvic tilt/short leg syndrome and how they can easily be corrected; side effects of "lift" therapy, recommended exercises; and a great deal more, The Humpty Dumpty Syndrome is recommended as a "must-read" do-it-yourself reference for anyone suffering the ill effects of chronic back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly educational and practical
One of the most common medical complaints today is about back problems. From people who just suffer through the pain to those who visit the chiropractor weekly to those who try to resolve the problems through physical therapy or surgery. In "The Humpty Dumpty Syndrome" author Harry Oxenhandler points out that many lower back pain problems are related to pelvic tilt. The book goes over pelvic tilt in great detail.Chapters cover the types of x-rays used to diagnose it, how to read the x-rays, how lift therapy helps the condition, exercises that can help alleviate the problem, and many other aspects of pelvic tilt. The focus of the book seems to be a combination of teaching the reader about pelvic tilt and preparing the reader to be able to discuss it with their doctor. If you are experiencing problems with your back you may find a solution to your problems in this book."The Humpty Dumpty Syndrome" is a highly recommended read for its educational value in helping people understand lower back problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Your Complete Guide To total Hip Replacements: Before, During And After Surgery
I am scheduled to have total hip replacement, and I wanted to get my questions answered. This book was very informative and very thorough. The author went into detail with all of the information, and she even gave "check lists" at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for anyone contemplating or recovering from total hip replacement
Jennifer Frantin, a physical therapist of 16 years' experience, presents Your Complete Guide to Total Hip Replacements, a pocket-sized, in-depth guide to taking control of the medical process to ensure a successful hip replacement and adaptation. Chapters discuss how to prepare for surgery, including choosing the right doctor and hospital, and dealing with one's insurance company; exercise and recovery after the surgery; home care; outpatient physical therapy; and much more. Black-and-white photographs clearly illustrate such issues as the importance of not bending one's hip past 90 degrees during the recovery period, even when sitting up in bed, and how to turn properly when using a walker. A glossary and index round out this compact yet information-filled guide, highly recommended and a "must-have" for anyone contemplating or recovering from total hip replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW !
I was implanted 2 years ago and probably should have read more before getting the CI.This book is magnificant. So many of the analogies she uses and experiences that Arlene encounters were so familiar to me.It is importnat to note that not all persons who are implanted do as well as Arlene or myself; sometimes they don't work at all.But it was amazing to read Arlene's story and recall my first year with sound; and because of the similiarities in our experiences I felt a kinship to Arlene.I was unable to put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with Hope
I read Arlene Romoff's book before deciding to have cochlear implant surgery.I was delighted with her matter of fact, candid, humorous, and personal diary of everyday events and the personal struggle she has gone through with a hearing loss.3-0 out of 5 stars Great, But Incomplete
This book is beautifully written by a woman who discovers that her cochlear implant has changed her life. It has many inspiring passages and, if you already have a CI, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you read this.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dark But Beautiful Honesty
With all due respect to another reviewer here, I would not describe this as a humorous book. The themes of violence and drug addiction don't naturally lend themselves to comedy. Personally I think you'd have to be a bit sick to laugh at the author's very painful story. It definitely does not show "the fun side to having Asperger's Syndrome". If anything it is quite the opposite. Sorry Beetlebangs1964 but did you actually read this book?
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Charged Humor
This book shows the fun side to having Asperger's Syndrome.Asperger's Syndrome is a neurobiological condition that is the spectrum partner to autism. As with any spectrum, there will be overlapping behaviors.Purkis does an exemplary job of describing those overlaps.

When I read this book I was in a hospital waiting room and thought there was no way out. This book gave me encouragement and hope that perhaps my child could also fight this injury if I stayed and helped. It has been a year and we are still working and most likely will continue for a long time, but the book gave me hope and the will to continue. Thanks to Louise Morningstarwe will continue to work and continue to pray for the miracle she proved possible.Cindi

5-0 out of 5 stars Been there, there are "Happy Endings"
The entire point of this book is that there is hope coupled with agenerous amount of faith and caring. I suffered a brian trauma due to amassive infection on Christmas day last year. and I was not given much of achance of survival. The infection spread to my brain, and I was in anotherworld for a straight six weeks.I am now recovering, and back to my oldhobby of building and maintainng computers. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative for Anyone Considering Lasik
This book is packed with answers.I feel like a mini-expert on Lasik now.I found the author's website for anyone interested:5-0 out of 5 stars The Eye Laser Miracle : The Complete Guide to Better
This book is extremely informative! It pretty much answered every question I had regarding LASIK, in a very objective and easy-to-understand manner. In fact, I was so impressed by Dr. Caster that I scheduled an initial (and free) consultation, to see if I was a candidate.Turns out I was, and after a more thorough pre-op exam, including an unanticipated trip to a retinal specialist (they saw something they wanted checked out and preferred a specialist's seal of approval), I went through with the LASIK procedure.I can't praise this book enough, for giving me helpful information that made me a better, more informed patient.I felt very much in control -- well, as much as I could be, under the circumstances; and that, I think, should be any patient's ultimate objective, regardless of the medical procedure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of a miraculous new medical procedure!
Dr. Caster describes in detail the LASIK procedure, a miraculous new laser eye surgery that can cure nearsightedness and astigmatism. After I read the book, I had Dr. Caster operate on my eyes, and I have now thrown away myglasses. This is 21st-century medicine delivered in the 20th century! ... Read more

At Home Among Strangers is a well-written historical overview of the Deaf community in America and of Deaf activism.Jerome Schein is a hearing academic who studies the Deaf community from a sympathetic but somewhatdistant perspective. It contains a lot of good information about Deaforganizations and events that hearing people are largely unaware of, so ifyou are a hearing person who wants to learn more about the Deaf community, this isn't a bad place to start, along with other books and classes in ASL.
