A GREAT BOOK
I am an older sibling of a child with a cleft and I found this book to be helpful in so many ways when re-searching what was going to be done to my baby brother.It used enough technical terms to explain what was going on, but it also explained things as well.I know that my mother would often read the chapter called Aiden; One child's story when she needed to find hope for her own son.I would recommend this book to everyone whether they are researching clefts or they have a family member who has a cleft.This is a wonderful book that was so extrememly helpful to both me and my family and well as other mom's I've talked to around the country.

I found this book to have very basic information on cleft lip and palate, which was good in that it presents the conditions in non-medical terms for the most part.However, it did not explore some of the more current methods of treatment, including pre-surgical devices, and it seems to have been sponsored by a specific support group which is never really disclosed.I found the nauseating mention of this group over and over and over again to be quite an obvious overkill, and I had to return mine copy.I need a more objective book so that I may come to my own conclusions, and I suggest that other parents do the same. ... Good content, let's not debate the source...
I haven't read "the arthritis cure" so can't comment on the other reviewer's "rehash" perception. The presentation looks highly suspicious, I bought it on the small chance it would actually help my knee pain....then I was surprised to find that some of his stuff actually works. Immediately. Wow, my joints honestly did feel "like silk" after one of his yoga sessions.

Quite an argument
This book is a historical exploration into the question of how the deaf should be educated, through sign or through oral speech.I wouldn't call it "a comprehensive history of the deaf" as advertised on the back of the book, and I wouldn't even call it "the history of relations between the society of hearing-speaking people and the community of deaf-signing people" as Lane suggests in his foreword.The book stays almost exclusively on the topic of education for the deaf, which in itself is quite interesting. Definite must for all who become involved with the deaf.
As a deaf person who has struggled long and hard to get my PhD in science and science education, this book with its history comes as no surprise to me. Harlan Lane is a hearing person who has taken up the cause of those in the deaf world with a vengence, and I do mean with a vengence! Dr. Lane has a tendency to write with immense vigor and sometimes his books tend to go overboard in stating the case. However, this book is a classic and is definitely one of his best written ones. Everyone should read this book
I picked this book up after reading Oliver Sacks's When the Mind Hears, and I am very glad I did. Without it, I might very well be blind to one of the world's most infuriating injustices: the attempt to gloss over deafnessand discredit sign language. Moreover, the book is beautifully written andprovides tons of information on the people and places involved. Unblinking look at the disease's impact on victim & family
Betty Spohr's frank first-hand observations about a devasting disease help those who follow her solid path as a care giver to her husband.. Her overriding love for her husband powers her to use her considerable creativeresources to shepherd him (and herself) as the effects of thediseaseaccellerate. Cochlea Implant is it for me or not?
I had heard about this book from someone at Kapiolani Community college who knew I had an interest in getting the Cochlea implant. This book opened my eyes, because I was deathly scared of getting the implant, but reading Bev's book ...has also opened my eyes wide enough to accept that the cochlea implant might just be for me...Bev always had expressed the willingness to be able to hear music. to be able to understand the lyrics of the song thats being belted out on the radio, to be able to hear the phone without a third person, to be able to carry a conversation without missing a word...to wait 40 years like Bev did to be able to hear music, its kind of sad...>I really liked this book...

excellent factual, and emotional aid to cochlear community.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Found it engrossing, fascinating and encouraging as a parent of a child who has just received an implant. I also specifically found Ms. Biderman's honesty about her childhood experiencesand processes and challenges in life as a result of her hearing impairmentan eye opener, especially for a parent who is trying to understand from allaspects what my child must be going through in his new journey into sound!

Wonderful description of CI activation. Great book!
This book is a great read for anyone trying to decide if they want to get a CI or for anyone who might have already had the surgery and want a good realistic description of what the activation might be like.That's when Iread it, while waiting to heal after surgery and before activation. As amatter of fact, I think it should be recommended reading for all CIcanidates. It helped on that first day to know that even if I didn't hearspeech, it would get better! If you're over 30 - BUY THIS BOOK!
"Wear and Tear" is a gem that should be on the best seller list. This book has been a real eye-opener for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help slow the damage we heap on our bodies as we age. But to be honest I've been a Dr. Arnot fan since he wrote "Guide to Turning Back the Clock", another excellent book (that needs to be updated). A cure for Wear and Tear?
This book is great for people who suffer from Arthritis, who are overweight, have reducecd flexibilty, or any other pain associated with their joints. Bob Arnot, one of the authors of this book believes strongly in yoga and stretching as exercises for people suffering with pain. In his practice, he does prescribe asprin and NSAIDS, but disourages the overuse of them. He believes more in exercise. Not strenuous exercise, just exercises like bicycling, walking, or swimming. Exercise is the key to strong muscles and joints. He also gives ideas for proper footwear, no high arched shoes. The book is jumpy as you read it, but overall, it would be of good use to those who suffer with joint pain. ... Read more
