1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
Of interest; the book's authors are throat and mouth specialists. Also, they are not aware that their institution ( Johns Hopkins) is making great strides in SCI research.that's a invaluable contact they neglected to study.Bold predictions are made claiming that SCI will not be cured within several decades, 100 years etc.Yet they tell the reader to move on with your life and still have hope for SCI therapies. Here's the problem- they do the worst thing imaginable, they condescend to the patient, providing false hope, if they clain SCI treatments (valid ones) are hundreds years away, then why should patients stay hopeful if it will not help them or anybody with a SCI in our lifetimes? These are serious claims from authors whose credentials do not include spinal cord injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a real life approach!
Since my SCI in May of 1999 we have accumulated a pile of books dealing with various aspects of SCI.At 1/10th the price, this book is many times better than any of the others.Their down to earth approach leads you from the point of injury until the day you make the transition from patient to the new you.Outstanding! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Your Miraculous Back
Easy to read and understand without being overwhelmed by medical
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - something that makes sense!!
I've been experiencing lower back pain for about 7 years, and like the rest of us, nothing really ever worked. Doctors had no real solutions other than back surgery - which I certainly didn't want to consider. Amazingly, this book has helped and I did not have to go under the knife!! I am very thankful to have discovered this rare gem. The back stretching exercises have really worked, so much so - that after a month of exercising my lower back feels stronger and the pain that typically plagues me is practically gone. Additionally, I found the description of how the back joints, muscles, and bones work together, their make-up, and their proper purpose to be very helpful. For those of you who are at their wits end with back pains and think that the doctor advocating surgery is the only way to get relief - try this book first... it is well worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of My New Favorite Books
Before beginning this review, I read the reviews of others; good and bad.I'm shocked at the venom spewed by people who called Erik Weihenmayer an arrogant jerk based on what they read.I had the opposite impression, but grant that the essence of an individual cannot be captured in the pages of a book. Many, many biographies have been written, yet, all fall short of completely describing the individual.Erik displayed unabashed love for his family, his wife, his friends, even his guide dog.He spent equal time describing his failures and his triumphs. He exposes his frailties by describing the trial and error involved in learning to effectively teach sighted children. He points out that the road to his successes were not his alone, but his, his family's, his wife's, his climbing partners', even his young students who were insightful and helpful when it came to his teaching.I especially liked that he described the antics, the pranks and the everyday 'slice of life' moments.I thouroughly enjoyed this book, so much that I can't imagine how anyone could NOT like it.But, there are all kinds people in this world and we all make it go 'round.I'd give it a perfect five, but it stops short of telling about climbing all seven summits.I'd prefer he'd waited until then to write his bio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soar to New Heights
I just finished reading the most wonderful book I have ever read. It's personal, it's a journey, it's an inspiration. And I don't even know how to make a tribute to the author. He seems like one of the more wonderful people in this world. The fact that he did what most of us couldn't is phenomenal; the fact that he enjoyed it is more. I was absorbed with this book from beginning to end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Touch the Top of the World
I met Erik years ago and remember admiring his job.He was a blind man, on his own, teaching children. He cracked up over my high pitched voice.I could go on, but years later, we got in touch and I read his book. You see, this guy never complained or showed what he had been through. He was confident, independent...yet searching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Step
This book isn't meant to replace a visit to your family physician, but to educate and inform parents so they can make the right decision. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, this book will help you get a better handle on the disorder, help you understand what your child is going through, and help you help your doctor properly treat your child. If you suspect your child has ADD, but aren't ready to take your child to the doctor, this is a good first-step. Get All About Attention Deficit Disorder, read it, and if you feel your child meets the criteria for ADD, contact your family physician for an appointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive
Dr. Phelan uses real life examples to illustrate his didactic narrative. He explains concepts clearly and cuts quickly to the heart of important issues. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the process getting an evaluation for AD/HD. He advocates a thorough, systematic approach to diagnosis. He explains how to make sure that the professionals have covered all of the bases.5-0 out of 5 stars A major contribution to ADD studies, discussions, and plans.
Now in a newly updated edition, Thomas Phelan's All About Attention Deficit Disorder continues to be one of the most "readerfriendly" introductions and explanations for parents, teachers andcare-givers of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Phelan covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for ADD children and adults. Highly recommendedfor personal, professional, school and community library collections, AllAbout Attention Deficit Disorder will provide information, tools, andemotional support needed by anyone dealing with a loved one, student, orpatient with this difficult, biologically based, psychologically impactingdisorder. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date information regarding accessible gardening
I was disappointed in the content of this book.It merely covers basic gardening.I was hoping it would cover some tips on accessible gardening for people with disabilities. It does mention some ideas on how to achieve that but the techniques they offer is outdated. The techniques they mention usually require costly physical modifications which can be somewhat frustrating to pursue. If you are really interested in gardening but have some physical limitations, there are products out there that are already adapted to your needs. There are many gardening tools that have extended and ergonomically desinged handles at Home Depot. There are also products that are ergonomically desinged if you have arthritis. Its better to do an internet search for these up to date products that spending a dollar on this book.Buy yourself a real gardening book and do an internet search on how to modify your garden and your tools.
4-0 out of 5 stars See people garden while using the product-specifies sources!
This is a visually appealing book, starting with the cover, which demonstrates a gardener's ability and success in accessible gardening! The paper is brighter than most and the print is clear. This book is designedto give you specific ideas, aids, and the source to obtain them! It is fullof B&W photos that show people gardening, while using the variousproducts! It is a readable book for beginner gardeners. It is a helpfulbook for advanced gardeners that need to modify their gardening forincreased accessibility. They need to print a revised edition to includemore ideas and product update. The initial building of items would probablyrequire help or hiring out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for persons with disabilities & love gardening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous book with easy to read critical information on mold.
As someone who has been "allergic" to mold my whole life and suffered horribly in any building with mold, this book helps the average person understand the how and why of mold effects on the body. It also gives detailed, specific information on how to detect mold, remediate a home or office and most important how to test people for the effects of mold exposure and what can be done to get healthy.I recommend anyone who has ever had any possible exposure to mold in a school, home or office get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mold does exist
As someone who grew up with horrific mold allergies and had to live with the skin rashes, sinus infections and asthma that accompanied any exposure, I found Mold Illness Made Simple to be a wonderful, funny, enligtening book that helped me understand why mold so affected me and what I could do to be well in the future.Given that mold exists in many unsuspecting places like large stores, schools and even in our homes, I think anyone would benefit from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mold Illness Made Simple

Since I am a fan of Sue Thomas, FBEye, I wanted to read the story behind the series."Silent Night" does not give as much insight on her job at the FBI as I thought it would. However, it does tell the inspirational story of a woman who through God's grace, became a productive Christian.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best patient is the educated patient
Facing the prospect of a cervical spine fusion, I wanted all the information I could find. Dr Filler's book is a very easy and enjoyable read. The book has general chapters on spine health, conditions and diseases that may necessitate surgery, and diagnostic and surgical procedures. Dr Filler then dedicates chapters to specific conditions and specific areas of the spine. He concludes with postoperative considerations and the future. I'm no stranger to major surgery. This is the best book of its kind that I have read. I shared the book with family members. It helped me understand my condition and better communicate with my surgeon.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those you want a better understanding of their spine conditions
This is an excellent book for those who want to be in control of their health. I run a specialist clinic, Core Concepts, for back pain in Singapore. For our patients that want to have a thorough understanding of their condition and treatment options, we strongly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read ... Thorough Information
I am facing major back surgery soon and this book was invaluable...it provided me with a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the spine and the details of the surgery which I will have.It is easy for a layman to understand and you can skip to the chapters that are appropriate for your particular ailment.I have already recommended it to two of my friends who also have severe back problems. It should be on the "MUST READ" list of anyone who has a back problem, no matter how large or small. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It was difficult to do and did not help me
I am sorry, some people say this book helped them but I found the exercises to be very tedious and ineffective. It was actually a pretty upsetting experience, because it was all so uncomfortable to do, and I really needed to find a solution to my Repetitive Strain Injuries but could not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! These exercises helped me immensely!
As a musician, I play the piano about 30 hours per week. This became difficult with the onset of tendonitis and carpal tunnel symptoms. I did these exercises daily for about 6 mos. with a personal trainer and physical therapist. I now live symptom free!Thank goodness I said no to the cortisone injections!I highly recommend it to anyone with similiar problems. You can be healed with this system of exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers on all counts
I had a chronic clenched muscle on the left side of my mid back for about 7 years. Some days it would be no problem, some days the pain was almost totally debilitating--I couldn't sit still for more than 5 minutes, which was a huge problem since I spent most of my time on the computer or at a drawing table. I tried chiropractic, massage, rolfing, yoga. Nothing gave me long-term relief. Then I found this book through my rolfer. I was skeptical about the back exercises, because you work on the thighs, not the back at all. Well, after doing the back exercises twice, the pain was gone. Entirely. Doing them once every three months now is enough to keep me pain free.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complex material made understandable
Dr. Tracey,
5-0 out of 5 stars A formidable book, a must-read for any medical student
This is wonderful book for the general public and requires little knowledge of medicine. It is written as a journal followed by a discussion and relates how a physician's compassion for a dying child leads to an important discovery in neuroimmunology. The book also describes in relatively simple terms the process of science and the steps involved in this discovery. At the end, Dr. Tracey introduces a medical theory called "the cytokine theory of disease," to explain many therapeutic effects observed in conventional and alternative medicine. Overall, this is a formidable book that anyone interested in a becoming a healthcare provider should read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tear for Janice's Struggles, A Prayer for the Future
About two thirds of this book is the story of Janice, an eleven months old girl who was admitted to the hospital with burns over 75% of her body. Her life expectancy with this much burn was about 25%, unlikely to survive the first night. But she did. She was recovering until her body began destroying itself. The name of her condition is severe sepsis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference!
I first read this book when my son was diagnosed with hearing loss. Here I found the information that I needed to understand his audiogram. There are many good suggestions for modifications in school.I have used several passages to help my son's teachers learn about hearing loss.I refer to this book again and again. This book would be helpful for a hearing-impaired adult or for a family member of someone with hearing loss.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Hearing Impaired and their Familes
The author is concise and acurate with information on hearing loss and its ramifications on communication. The book deals in depth with psychosocial aspects of hearing loss and provides useful tips to ease communicationfriction between individuals with hearing loss and their families. As anindividual with a hearing loss, I wish I would have read this years ago. However, as a graduate student in Audiology, the chapter on hearing aids isout of date.A second edition possible?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book has very little information in it and leans more towards the touchy feely approach ie how are you going to deal with it, attitudes etc. Unfortunately what I wanted was more precise information on differentcauses of hearing loss as well as tests used to determine it (as I am goingthrough this right now). I wanted to understand what the doctors were doingand why but this book was a waste of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life ChangingAnswers for Psychological and Physical PPS
Reading this book I felt like someone had entered my life and could see my thoughts and frustrations. It was strange. It is so true- we were taught avoidance of the issue. As a nurse I learned about polio in the past tense, and had read few articles on PPS. I had seen polio survivors, even gone to school with a couple but never talked to them and when problems started did not even know who to talk to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like Maslow, Every Paragraph Grabs the Reader Who Suffers
"Ah ha!" are the words I'd suck in as I read Dr. Bruno's book. After a year's research on my own, I found the PPS Institute and Dr. Bruno's book. Those of us who had Polio (or didn't know that "it" was Polio) only knew one thing - we were over it and had to get on with life and catch up ASAP.We had fear at our back door, and it pushed us onward, every minute of our lives. For me, after cancer, I kept thinking "Its just the chemo" but I had been told in 1982 I had PPS and "Use it or lose it" was the theory protocol, so I kept going like I was short in the back with a "22" fearing I'd lose some dendrite that would nourish a neuron, and the first symptom I had (in '82) would come back.Instead, I became worse - the results were what drove me to discover Dr. Bruno's book and go to the Institute: hundreds of falls, broken bones, lacerated head injuries, tripping for the past 50 years and feeling like a clutz, when I was known as the regional "Happy Tom-Boy" BP (before Polio).5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bruno is the utmost authority!
If you or someone you love is a polio survivor, this is a MUST read. Informative and written in plain language that a layman can understand! Thank you Dr. Bruno for enlightening me! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too restrictive for less than the extremist!!
I have read many books on nutrition, and have been through some restrictive programs in my day, but this book is WAY beyond restrictive.I became dizzy with all the information and the do's and the don'ts, and the how's and the why's.This book is supposed to be a "daily regimen for healthy living", yet it outlines a time-consuming schedule of not only how and what to eat, but he also tells the reader that they need to "brush" their skin daily, what kind of clothes to wear, how and when to take a shower, and drink "Veal Joint Broth" -- it's almost maddening to read the book and even more maddening to think of my life lived in such intensity and restriction! When I got to the "suggested" menus, I finally knew that this "regimen" was not for me.Except for fresh fruits and vegetables, almost all menu items can only be found in a high-end health food store, so if you shop at a regular food chain store like me, or depend on a realistic food budget (don't we all?) -- then this book isn't for you either! If you drink "Dandelion Coffee", eat "Baked Carrot Loaf" or "Muesli with Goat's Milk", then this book is for you.Dr. Jensen gives the same sound advice as others do (e.g. eat fresh fruits and veggies, exercise, drink plenty of water and get good rest, etc.), but it is his sound advice taken to the extreme. How can we balance work, kids, home, church, friends, social life -- and then have the time, or energy, to live by his extremely structured regimen? This may have helped many, or only just a few, but I sure wish I had seen this kind of review before I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have read most of Bernard Jensen's books and reviewed dozens of other health books over several years. This book as most of the other Jensen books all have some things that the others do not.It may be in the elaboration of the information, the subject itself or the manner of explaining some aspect of nutrition or the body, but all the information serves to reinforce.I am well pleased with this book in particular as it addressed 'slant board' use, missing nutrients in the foods commonly eaten, when to eat what types of whole foods. The four and a half pages on the lymph drainage system is worth the price of the book all by itself.5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Dr. Jensen
One of the best books I read about Nutrition. Buy it and you'll not be sorry.:-) ... Read more
