5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a comprehensive discussion of RA we can understand.
This discussion on RA is the most comprehensive available in layman's terms. This disease process is so complicated and the research on treatment so varied, trying to keep up on journal articles or short publications is almost impossible. This book puts more useable information between the two covers than you will find anywhere. Unlike medical journals, the disease process explanations are concise and understandable.Although the explanations are detailed and scientific and may take more than one reading to get your brain around the complex concepts, it nicely falls somewhere in between the very oversimplified information found in "arthritis" books available at bookstores and over-complicated and hard-to-read medical book information. Truly helpful is the detail about how clinical trials are conducted and the complicated sequence of events that occur in treatment research. It makes the waiting for decades for new treatments a little easier to understand. Also helpful are the briefs on current research (now a bit out of date-some of the "in trials" treatments in the book have been approved and are available) that is ongoing along with web sites so individuals can follow trials, results, research progress, etc. and even contains information on joining in some of the clinical trials. The description of the immune processes is very helpful. Not only does it help the reader understand the immune system as a whole, and the effect of this disease on the immune system, it also gives a good picture of how HIV and AIDS compares on the opposite end of the immunity spectrum (overactive vs. underactive immune system). Best of all, this book arms RA sufferers with good information to be able to take a more active role in their own treatment. Buy it for a friend who has RA or buy it for yourself. You will want to reread it several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gift for someone with rheumatoid arthritis!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, or if a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with this disease I highly recommend this book as an invaluable source of information. Not only is it packed with facts on rheumatoid arthritis ranging from details of exactly what is happening in the joints and the immune system to useful Web sites to keep up on the latest details on new medications and treatment approaches, it is also clearly and beautifully written. It really is a handbook to help readers make informed decisions with their physcians.Included as well are fascinating insights into possible future treatments now in the research stage - from the use of stem cells to gene therapy.Read more

I have enjoyed the book.It is very informative. Will continue to use and enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, holistic approach
"The Pain-Free Back" is a comprehensive examination of back pain and what you can do about it.The authors discuss various symptoms and when you should be concerned that it might be something serious. This includes answering the very important question "When do you try to treat it yourself and when do you call a doctor?"5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend to men and women with back pain
I read this book to get ideas on how to stop back pain. While I'm not a proponent of natural or complementary therapies, these doctors convinced me that taking control of my lifestyle habits was the only way to end the pain. I even went as far as to start taking the natural dietary supplements glucosamine and SAM-e (recommended in the book). Other anti-inflammatory medications had caused a horrible stomach condition, and the natural supplements ease the pain and have allowed me to be more active and start walking again with my wife and kids. The review of causes of back pain was most helpful, and I began to question whether my primary care doctor had really diagnosed my pain correctly. A consultation with a rheumatologist confirmed that I had a form of arthritis common to men instead of pulled muscles. This book urged me to seek answers and reclaim an active life. Thank you. I must add that this book is not hype or sham. I'm cautious of books such as that. This book is highly credible by two renowned doctors and experts in their respective fields. I'm now getting the Pain-Free Arthritis book they wrote for more information on my back condition. Good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable with lots of good information
In response to a family emergency, I ordered four books on stoke recovery. Two had been recommended to me as being helpful for lay people: (1) "Living With Stroke: A Guide For Families" (Senelick, Rossi & Dougherty, 1999) and (2) "Stoke and the Family: A New Guide" (Stein, 2004). I ordered these for my family members (and myself). Two more were written at a much more scholarly, technical level for clinicans: (3) "Recovery after Stroke" (Barnes, Dobkin, & Bogousslavsky, Eds, 2005), and (4) "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach" (Gillen & Burkhardt, Eds, 2004).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My aunt became partially incapacitated by a stroke at the age of 55, and I took on the responsibility of assisting her in her day-to-day activities.I bought a number of books on stroke, but found this one to be by far the most comprehensive and sensitively written on the subject.Dr. Stein's book describes the wide range of severity that strokes can take and offers in-depth guidance on how best to adapt to life after stroke.I especially appreciated that the author explained the medical implications of stroke in layperson's terms that I could understand without a scientific background. If you buy one book on this subject, let this be the one -- I recommend this book without reservation to anyone whose family has been touched by stroke. ... Biochemical Individuality was first published by Dr. Roger J. Williams in 1956.It has just been reissued with a new introduction by Jeffrey S. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical
I thought that this book contained an informative behind the scenes look at the orthopedic world.Although I believe that many are not out to simply get you in surgery, I'm sure there are a good portion that are and this book will give you cues on how to spot a happy cutting surgeon. This book will also awaken you to the fact that the doctor is merely a human being, sometimesmaking educated guesses into your condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
If you or someone you knows has knee problems this is one of the only books you may need. It goes into detail about all different areas from how MRIs can read false positive to what to look for in a Dr. and how to pick one out.

Orthopaedic docs come from the ranks are our county's best and brightest.Surely I can count on getting top quality care for my knee, right? That's what I figured, but Dr Grelsamer explains why this ain't necessarily so as only an insider can.(Money, the medial system, tremendous technology changes, and the tricky nature of the knee come into play.)

The book made me cry. What a challenge. The public in general doesn't realize how Autism impacts on families this book opens our eyes. The family seems to have found comfort in helping others cope by training and supplying the "Assistance Dogs" while they raise four children. What an example they are to their own children, such devotion to "family".

I think THE GOLDEN BRIDGE is an important book for any parent of a child on the spectrum to read.

Editorial Review

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor(and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and relatedconditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these termssound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.Read more

Reviews (19)

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy into this book
Most books on RSI are poison for your mind. You'll read about: RSI horror stories, how the body is fragile and easily injured, and how you should curtail your work and daily activities. All of this will only make the pain worse, and will increase the number and the severity of your symptoms. You'll start to become afraid to do anything--the fear will make the pain worse, and the pain will make the fear worse, creating a downward spiral.
3-0 out of 5 stars good
I found this to be the best book as far as having pictures to show how to do stretches and on good typing technique.4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive introduction to RSI.
"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years. ... In her book "Disability, Society, and the Individual," Julie Smart grapples with the definition of disability, its complications, implications, and the role it plays in society. The author touches on a broad range of disabilities, both physical and psychological. In defining disability, Smart clearly differentiates disadvantages from disability.Insight from several disabled people is included to give readers a first person perspective. The author goes into detail about legislation relating to the disabled, particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into effect by George Bush in 1990.The ADA has facilitated the access of people with disabilities into many aspects of public life. She mentions that it has also inspired several advances in current technology, assisting even those without disability.Read more

You see them everywhere. With their bulging arms and deltoids and pecs, not to mention their rippling abdominal muscles, they appear on magazine covers, in underwear ads, in action movies. And American men have noticed them; after a generation of being bombarded by images of idealizedmale physiques, men are growing increasingly insecure about their own appearance.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars just ok
not a bad book, but a little more info than i was looking for.recipes are really for "blending" and not necessarily just for those using a "juicer," and especially if you are just starting out. if you just want the basics, try The Juiceman's Power of Juicing.it is really good! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is a book that tries to view erectile disorders though the eye of an eminent scientist dr Deborah Kathryn Hargis who agreed to share her experience with erectile disorder men with all the world. Detailed descriptions of her relationships litter this book, but the interesting part of the book is limited. If you want a book about sexual disorders and erectile dysfunctions that won't disappoint you look for "Natural Penis Enlargement: New Methods of Avoiding and Curing Impotence, Premature Ejaculation, and Erectile Dysfunction Safely and Inexpensively. New ... No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets! Vol. 2" by Platinum Millennium, the best book on ED available

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I thought this would be a helpful book about the challenges of ED from the female point-of-view, which would reassure women and offer concrete suggestions about how to work through this difficult issue with a husband or partner.Instead, it is a poorly-written (i.e., run-on sentences, incorrect grammar and repetitive and superfluous information) recounting of the author's experiences with several men with ED issues. And the ED issues were rather small portions of each chapter! The author spent the rest of the time recounting ad nauseum the many times these men complimented her intellect and beauty and providing detailed descriptions of their expensive homes and decorating taste. It began to read like little more than a valentine to herself. If you bother to get this book at all, skip the main portion of the book and go right to the Epilogue, which contains 18 summary points about ED.That is where what little "meat" there is in this book is contained (no pun intended).

5-0 out of 5 stars A informative collection of illustrative "case studies"
"Your Legs Are Too Long": Getting Beyond Excuses For Erectile Dysfunction by psychologist Deborah Kathryn Hargis is a informative collection of illustrative "case studies" concerning the condition of male erectile dysfunction. Offering a realistic look at the medical, psychological, and marital issues of this condition which has an influence upon millions of men and women, "Your Legs Are To Long" offers both age-old and contemporary viewpoints on what is 90% of the time caused primarily by physical problems which can often be successfully treated by a physician. Indeed, the major problem is that the seeking of such medical assistance does not come easily to many afflicted men. "Your Legs Are Too Long" is very highly recommended to any non-specialist general reader having to deal with the problems arising from a condition of erectile dysfunction. ... Read more
