2-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
I tried to find specific conditions in the book - and the procedures to follow for treating them.I couldn't even figure out the procedures to follow when reading them - the writing just isn't very clear.
3-0 out of 5 stars Requires two people
I was very interested in this book based on the reviews. I was able to look at it at the library before buying it. To my surprise, almost everything in the book requires two people. The book is more like an instruction book for a physical therapist. If you are looking for a book that you can use by yourself, I highly recommend The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy newer edition!
Dr. Sarno's concept is sound, but this is his first report, rather old. There are two newer books, the best of which, of course, is the 2006 "The Divided Mind : The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders", which I highly recommend.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
I should have listened to the people who wrote negative reviews, this book is a complete and total ripoff, it tells you nothing , save your money and buy a bottle of wine instead

1-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
Did I miss something?Clearly from the title alone Dr. Sarno believes tension and tightening of muscles is the cause of most back/leg pain.Where is the chapter that gives you steps to change this?!I didn't need to buy this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Candidiasis ad infinitum
Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information.I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candidia Albican Yeast-Free Cookbook, The: How Good Nutrition Can Help Fight the Epidemic of Yeast-Related Diseases
This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Candida Recipes
I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal.Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base.Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that.Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for back pain sufferers.Simple and effective!
This is a wonderful well illustrated book with easy to perform exercises that are effective for back pain. The descriptions are easy to follow and there is not an overwhelming amount of detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great entry-level text for cranky backs
I had purchased Ungaro's Body in Motion and Siler's Pilates Body to begin doing pilates, as they were generally the most respected texts. But my back couldn't handle the most basic level of some of the introductory exercises. This book, however, along with King and Green's Back Strengthening Workout, has given me a sequence of exercises and modifications that (I can already feel after two weeks of use) will get me where I want to be. The introduction to this book is a little too technical on anatomical detail, and the Ungaro and Siler books are superior in terms of illustration and textual guidance at the advanced levels, but without this I'd be quitting and/or hurting before I ever got going with Pilates.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pilates Basics
If you ever taken a mat class you will know these exercises front and back, if you haven't then this very basic book will show you how to do the moves without hurting yourself for the most part. The straight leg positions are not the most comfortable position to be in when your low back hurts you. I like the floor movements on your back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple techniques create amazing results.
This remarkable little book may change the way you think about knee pain. Instead of focusing on pain symptoms and where they originate, the author focuses on what your knee does - and how to improve those functions with simple exercises. The only anatomy lesson you need is to know where your quadriceps and hamstring muscles are - front and rear of your thigh respectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars what you need and nothing extra
This book doesn't waste your time - it just reports what research says has been effective and then lays out a simple routine of exercises you can do at home, with extensions if you want to go further.I've had good results from following basically the same routine he suggests - it's given me back hope that fifty-year-old knees can survive a running program after all, and it's helped me avoid surgery which probably wasn't needed. It also cut through a lot of conflicting and confusing diagnoses and went straight to advice on how to avoid pain - who cares about the exact cause if it goes away?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Besides being an easy read, I found this book to be a common sense approach to the care of your knees. With disability in both of my knees, I found the author's approach very beneficial and would highly recommend this book to anyone with knee problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!
After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book.Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality.Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.

2-0 out of 5 stars made light out of some people's genuine pain
Although I agree with the premise that stress can and does cause physical pain and many chronic ailments, there are many of us out there with serious debilitating back problems, that can not be just "willed away" or minimized by meditation and breathing exercises.A small chapter at the end of the book owned up to some of the serious back problems that are, in fact, serious and would need special treatment sometimes (rarely) even surgery.I have a feeling this was inserted as almost an afterthought to prevent any lawsuits from anyone believing you can ignore your serious back problems and get right back to your previous normal life.Unfortunately that's not the case for many people out there who aren't just suffering from muscle spasms and stress.

We see the various aspects of Deaf culture from many points of view as Ms. Cohen explores issues through the various characters in the book. All the characters are very interesting and fully drawn. You feel as though you know each one of them when you're done.

5-0 out of 5 stars An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book
In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage.Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc.You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Effects a fundamental change in thinking about learning and rehabilitative movement
I've been studying physical education, in a variety of forms, both as an athlete and as a movement educator for 30 years.More recently, I completed two years of Feldenkrais training.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Master's 1st presentation of his Method's foundations
I contend that rigidity [...] i.e., the adherence to a principle to the utter exclusion of its opposite, is contrary to the laws of life." Thus wrote Feldenkrais in this book in 1949, when he was 45 years old, already an expert in Judo and with a PhD in physics. In those years he settled for some time in Britain after having emigrated from Russia, where he was born, to Palestine, and then travelled to France, where he spent a few years studying science and training in Judo. The book presents the essence of his phenomenally wide perspective about re-opening the path for personal development.
