4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Researcher
A quite complcated book...I'm not sure that I agree with the message, but something should be done to obtain organ donors. I agree that altruism does not work in America for the reason that people are generally ignorant to what being a donor entails, or just don't care as is shown in the England studies. My feeling is that general rules and rights need to be changed to make up for the huge deficit. For one thing, obtaining a drivers license should guarantee the person as a donor unless there is a definite objection. It works in Spain and Austria and Belgium.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wide variety of alternatives, and changes discussed
Collaboratively written by David L. Kaserman (Torchmark Professor and Chairman of the Department of Economics, Auburn University) and A. H. Barnett (Professor and Chairman of the Department of Economics, International Studies, and Public Administration, American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates), The U.S. Organ Procurement System: A Prescription For Reform is a close and compelling look at the problems in America's current policies regarding the distribution of human organs for transplants. Extensive surveys, facts, research, and mathematical analysis of data and trends point to a very clear picture: the system as is (which relies on human altruism alone to provide needed organs), suffers from an extreme and severe shortage that would not exist if every possible donor and family were registered. The results arising from current policies are waiting lists, suffering, and death among those who need transplants the most. A wide variety of alternatives, and changes to the current system are discussed at great and detailed length, including the offering health insurance discounts to those who agree to donate their organs. A sober and thought-provoking book on a hotly-debated and emotionally charged topic, The U.S. Organ Procurement System is strongly recommended reading for health reform activists, as well as governmental and health industry policy makers. ... Editorial Review

For the 87,000 people on the waiting list for transplants in the United States alone, stem cell research leading to cloned human organs is a distant hope. Far more likely in the short run, at least according to its most passionate advocates, is xenotransplantation, or transplantation across species. Putting animal organs into humans may seem distasteful or even unethical, but in Read more

It seems like the more progress we make, the more we realize just how much we don't know.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent job of keeping a fast pace and a scientific eye on Dr. Sachs' promise and progress
G. Wayne Miller's The Xeno Chronicles: Two Years On The Frontier Of Medicine Inside Harvard's Transplant Research Lab focuses on Dr. David Sachs, a pioneer in immunology who has made many contributions in the field of organ transplants. His real passion lies in xenotransplantion: using animal parts to treat and replace human parts, and The Xeno Chronicles here examines his decades of work and the genetically engineered, cloned pig Goldie designed for organs which are not rejected by recipients. From limits of research money and time to moral and ethical concerns, The Xeno Chronicles does an excellent job of keeping a fast pace and a scientific eye on Dr. Sachs' promise and progress.

G. Wayne Miller is a journalist with a keen interest in the personal and professional lives of medical pioneers, who are little known outside their field. His past books include King of Hearts and The Work of Human Hands, both of which recount the day to day experiences of pioneers in the field of surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting personal account of recent surgical history
This book, by transplantation pioneer Dr. Thomas Starzl, is an easy read, a wonderfully inspiring story, and an interesting history of modern surgical medicine. I was compelled to write the review because of several reviews that disparage Dr. Starzl and this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Man with a heart, a real heart.
Dr. Starzl saves lifes not only with his skills, but with a real heart.A genuine human being.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling at times
The author disparages several people in this book, including those who are not alive to defend themselves. This reflects more negatively on the author than on the persons he criticizes. Nonetheless, the book iscompelling at times, particularly where the author talks about the patientshe has helped, or those he has tried to help but who did not survive. Theauthor was and is clearly a major figure in a field which has done much toprolong and improve the lives of many people. If the book accomplishesnothing else, hopefully it will encourage its readers to provide for thedonation of their organs after death, or those of their loved ones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Bitter Book
Dana Broehl is my spanish teacher, and I read her book mostly to see how good of a writer she is. I found out that she is an excellent writer who adds humor to her very difficult problems. She writes of her husbands double lung transplants and all of the problems that go along with it. It is a heart warming story of love, faith and living ones life to the fullest. This is perfect for anyone who is going through a difficult situation or has been through one in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
Dana is a gifted writer who has told the story of how her life was transformed by love in a most glorious way.She shares the deepest secrets about meeting Doug and then goes on to tell how she had to learn to share him with a third party - a chronic disease that would surely kill him.Was it worth working to build the relationship?Could Dana and Doug beat the odds, which were stacked against them on so many different fronts? There is so much to be learned from their experience and Dana (a teacher by profession) educates the reader about accepting the truth and overcoming obstacles previously unimaginable. There is a spiritual side, but it does not dominate her writing. There is a humorous side, but it does not detract from the seriousness of the story. This is probably the most educational, amusing and uplifting book I have read in the past year.

I just finished reading XENO - it easily lives up to the reviews I read in "Nature" and "The New Scientist."I wish all medical books were this thoughtful (and easy to read).

I just finished reading XENO - easily lives up to the excellent reviews I read in Nature and the New Scientist.

1-0 out of 5 stars A sales pitch fraught with inaccuracies
If you liked what Song of the South did for American history, you will love Xeno's take on transplantion. Written by two individuals with a vested interest in promoting xeno-transplantation, the book glosses over the dangers inherent in putting organs from the animal thought to have the largest number of endogenous viruses into a severely and permanently immunosuppressed patient and then releasing that person in a unsuspecting world to be a human vector. The book alternates from blantant inaccuracies to sins of omission to the most impossibly naive spin on the abysmal history of this failed psuedo-science. I would love to think that the authors were just optimists but their resumes make it obvious that they have an enormous financial interest in keeping the dollars infused to their dangerous attempts at pseudo-science. This book is pure propaganda and the normally prestigous Oxford Press should be ashamed to have it on their list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book for the whole family.
I recieved this book as a gift from the author herself and, despite it being a sort of reference book, I enjoyed it a lot. It was informative without being boring or anything. The illustrations are cute too. If you or a family member is experiencing the hardships of dealing with an organ transplant, this book is great. A+++
