5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of social research
Margaret Lock discusses how organ transplant interests fostered the notion of brain death in North America and Japan. Until recently, Japan did not accept brain death as a sufficient criterion of death, even when the Japanese had all the technology and medical skills to carry out organ transplantation. By contrasting the muted discussion about brain death in North America with the heated, well informed public debates in Japan, Lock makes readers uncomfortable. Are people declared brain dead in America really dead, or do neurologists simply assume that they are dead to allow transplantation to take place? When does death occur anyway; is it a process or an event? Should physicians determine death with technological guidelines, or should death be defined by the people who are the most implicated, like relatives? Lock does not provide easy answers to those questions but her exhaustive research indicates how a different consensus about brain death emerged in the East and the West.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers a wide variety of topics
I have gone through a very emotional period in which twice, I thought I was going to be a living organ donor. Once it was to have been a kidney and the other time a lobe of my liver. Each time, I was unable to undergo the surgery. My liver's blood vessels are in the way, thus the surgeon cannot safely operate without risking severing an artery. Going through the process of preparing for surgery, even though ultimately the surgery never took place, has given me an interest in the topic of organ transplants and the ethical issues surrounding them. This book has articles on the ethics of living transplants as well as many other topics such as the allocation of scarce organs, using fetal tissue, defining "brain death," etc. Some articles are several years old so the technology discussed may be a little dated but the ethical issues remain. Some articles are from medical journals and are rather technical from a lay person's standpoint. Nonetheless, most articles are interesting and when I showed this book to my would be surgeon for the liver transplant, he immediately ordered a copy for himself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and superbly edited.
This collection of essays on issues related to organ transplantation is both thought-provoking and timely, as our society grapples with critical problems such as the allocation of donor organs, the use of animal organs, etc.Caplan and Coelho have done a superb job of editing this anthology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From Two-Headed Dogs to the Bionic Human
Transplant might have been titled Transplants for Complete Idiots. It explains things in terms even I, a slow learner when it comes to science, can understand. Things such as the fact that a heart transplant is completely different from a liver transplant (I guess I had thought that once they'd figured out how to pop one organ into someone, the procedure would be pretty much the same for the other organs). Transplant also goes into more detail for those who are medically inclined. Still, there really wasn't very much that an interested and moderately intelligent reader couldn't understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars very well done
If one asked me how I felt about selling ones organ's for profit a few months ago I would have surely said that it would be an immoral act indeed. However, after reading cherry's book I cannot, on a philosophical basis, find any flaws in his logic. A fun and interesting read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing--pretty much a reprint of earlier stuff
I was really looking forward to this book, but was totally disappointed with it. Mark Cherry's written several papers on the topic of kidney sales for academic journals, and this book is pretty much just a reprint of them. I mean, these papers were Ok (although not as good as Radcliffe Richards paper in the *Journal of Medicine and Philosophy* and Gerald Dworkin's paper in his book *Markets and Morals*) but I was hoping for more new arguments, not the same stuff again. He also doesn't acknowledge that a lot of this is just reprinted in his Acknowledgements, which is pretty bad I think. The book's also much shorter that it seems--it just 160 pages of argument, the rests just notes and appendices and stuff. At least the book's pretty cheap, although this just seems to show you get what you pay for...

5-0 out of 5 stars A sensitive treatment of a delicate topic
There is no question to my mind that an organ or tissue transplant can be a life-giving and life-changing miracle for a recipient.I am one who should know this; after all, since 1990 I have had the benefit of two cadaveric kidney transplants.I know from experience the transforming power that a transplant can have on one's thinking and feeling as much as on one's health.Among other things, a transplant gives its recipient an appreciation for sacrificial generosity, and perhaps even some kind of vicarious atonement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Valuable Information
This book was the only one of its kind for a long time. In fact, I found it years after my father's liver transplant, and found it helpful even "after the fact."
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Sourcebook for Information on Transplants
There is such a scarce amount of information for families of transplant recipients. In fact, this is the only book on the subject at my local library.I found it extremely helpful and informative for many of the technical questions I had about what my father went through and would continue to endure.(He had a liver transplant 7 years ago.)I wish I had found it years ago!Thank you Robert Finn!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo
As a clinical social worker that works with patients facing the possibility of organ transplantation, I picked up this book with the hope that it would be something I could recommend to patients. It did not disappoint me!Very well written and comprehensive, it gives a huge amount of information in an easy to understand format. It is also a very interesting read - I had a hard time putting it down!It is a great starting point for people that are just beginning to learn about transplant.I will be strongly recommending it to all patients and families that I meet as part of the pre-transplant evaluation process. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars One sided
The book is mistitled as 'Principles' since it does not really do justice to the foundations of the field. It is more of a compilations of the research work of a 'few' investigators in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covering the whole body
This is a great book, covering most details of its field. It describes the physicians (and their patients) dream of substituting organs and cells and it also shows, how mankind could not solve problems up to now. History of artificial organs lacking the full function is one point, but the focus is on cells and their ability to build complete organs and therefore the book looks on the pathway for the future of organ substitution.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for students and researchers
