5-0 out of 5 stars When Life hands you a lemon, make lemonade
This book is a classic depiction of the above adage. When an illness like Parkinson's Disease strikes you and your body refuses to obey your wishes as you have been accustomed and prospects of getting better, seem bleak, it is easy to give way to passivity and depression. This is one thing William Paul Hansen refused to do. He began to work on his disease at several levels. His malady has prompted him to read and expand his frontiers and this book contains an impressive reading list on mind body healing. He adopted a strict spiritual regimen, meditating regularly for hours each day. At the physical level, he took off from his job and 'began my research odyssey', with a new exercise and diet routine. He also ended up developing the Parkimin sprays, a device which were aimed at conveying drugs for Parkinsons and other neurological diseases, more effectively to the brain.
5-0 out of 5 stars His inspirational testimony of hope and perseverence
I'm Dancing Again Because Hope Heals: How One Man Conquered Parkinson's is the personal story of William Paul Hansen and his personal triumph over a chronic and debilitating disease. Seven years ago, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and prostate cancer. He attributes his miraculous recovery to his use of nutraceutical sprays, intense spirituality, and a daily physical training program. His inspirational testimony of hope and perseverence is touching and memorable, recounting his struggle against fears and his search to find meaning even as he strived to learn more about the medical conditions that threatened him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing is believing!
I've known Bill Hansen for months now, and everything Bill says in his book is absolutely true.He has rebuilt his life after being diagnosed with Parkinson's and his book is an inspiration to anyone stricken with a neurological disease.Anyone who has Parkinson's or knows someone who has Parkinson's, which is practically everyone, should read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars goldstein is a genius!!!!!
not only is dr. jay goldstein a genius in how the brain works, but he has a heart of gold!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Goldstein's treatment approach was very effective for me
I was housebound and often bedridden for 15 years with severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.I tried many treatment approaches but nothing had any beneficial effect.I began working with Dr. Goldstein in 2001, following the experimental drug protocol set forth in this book. I was on the meds he prescribed for 3 years.During that time, I gradually recovered.I am now off the meds, working fulltime, and living a normal life. I know this approach does not work for everyone, but it has worked for many people with CFS, and I would recommend giving it serious consideration.Dr. Goldstein's hypothesis is that CFS is the result of a malfunction of the nervous system in which the neurons are over-responsive to stimuli.Sounds, smells, bright lights, stress, etc. all over-stimulate the over-reactive nervous system, causing fatigue and adrenal exhaustion. This is certainly consistent with my own experience of the illness. The meds reduce synaptic transmission.Over time, they can restore the nervous system to normal functioning.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information
This book is full of great information about the central nervous system and it's function; how it all works together and how it can affect us when it goes awry.Dr. Goldstein is a genius in his research and approaches to Chronic Fatigue which is such a hard disease to lhave accurately diagnosed from today's medical community. It is equally hard to live with as I am a chronic fatigue sufferer. My only knock on this book is that it does not go into more depth on Dr. Goldstein's treatment plans and hopefully one of his books, or a new one he has soon to be released will.Especially since he has suddenly retired due to illness.I can only hope another doctor will decide to take the challenge and follow in his footsteps and continue the wonderful research and treatments which he has started that has helped many sufferers of this disease; and this knowledge and information will not be lost. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book was a tremendous disapointment.Ridiculous.A waste of the short time it takes to read - unless you are an ABA teacher and need to read something to build your ego.Other than that - save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Asperger's Syndrome, The Universe and Everything: Kenneth Hall
I thought, overall, this was a unique book. The only negative was the handfull of references to Harry Potter books that Kenneth loves to read. (Christian parents-edit reading to your child as you go.) It had some very interesting insights into the operating personality of a young boy with Asperger's. I have a son with AS who is nine, so I was looking for a book on his level to help provide an explanation and understanding of his diagnosis. For the most part, this book has been a help to him, though it does seem to be redundant and lengthy at times.I definitely recommend that the parents read this book to your AS child with siblings present should any questions arise. It provides a good explanation for the other children of "why" their brother/sister has a hard time with certain things. It also helped us to realize some further, more vague, symptoms of AS that our younger son demonstrates and in which he personally recognized "Hey, Momma, that's me!"So we are in the process of getting him evaluated as well.Overall, this was a good book to begin to teach your child more about his/her uniqueness and the good points about who they were created to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside View of Aspergers
Awesome! Kenneth is a 10 year old boy with AS. This book helps AS parents, teachers, & others to understand the delicate and complicated perspectives of an AS child's brain. Kenneth describes how the world looks to him and how so many things are a challenge for him. I've read the book numerous times. I have also quoted it in meetings and appeal hearings to help others understand my AS son's strenths and weaknesses. It allows "outsiders" an inside look at the world of Aspergers. My son has read it and feels it is describing his life. He is amazed that there is someone in the world that feels the way he does and views things the same way. This is a definite read for all who interact with these special children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have ALS and was surprised this helped....
Cover to cover this book enlightened me to what I've expereinced, feared and now need to predict.Having lost my aunt and godmother to this disease made me feel guilty and aprehensive. I taught religion for 5 years to 8th graders in addition to my full time job.In the last year I had to tell them the truth about me, I now have ALS, the first group outside my family and very close friends.I did not think reading this book would encourage me to hope but it did.Although most of my family also are reading it too, it almost seems harder for them then me, but in the end its good advice and at least opens the door for good and educated communication when decisions will be needed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Educational... not always offers what I want
Fowler combines personal experience and his very indepth research to make for an interesting book to learn about Tourette Syndrome. He lived a life worth telling full of improper diagnoses and decades of drug testing to cure his demons. While there are personal stories throughout, I really wanted to get to learn his life. He is a musician now... how did he survive beforehand?
2-0 out of 5 stars DID NOT MEET EXPECTATIONS...
This slender tome gives the reader a non clinical, layperson's peek into the world of those who suffer from the little understood malady known as Tourette Syndrome. The author, who himself has this disorder, speaks about the various manifestations of Tourette Syndrome and gives a brief historical overview of this malady. While informative, it fails to capture the reader, who comes away knowing a little more about the disorder, but never fully comprehends what life was like for the author who grew up with Tourette Syndrome, though tantalizing glimpses are offered. So, if one were looking for a personal memoir of a person growing up with Tourette Syndrome, this would not be that book. If one merely wants a layperson's synopsis of Tourette Syndrome, then this book may be of some value.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true inside look of a Trouetter - looking out
This book gave an indepth sense of what is going on inside of a person with tourette syndrome. It gives you a strong feel of the helplesness when your mind says one thing, and your body does something entirely on its own. My eleven year old son cries at night and begs me to make this "Tourette" thing go away - make me be normal like everyone else. This book tells it from the heart. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There are many books for new parents better than this one!
Honestly, I have not read this book, though I have read all of the excerpts available through Amazon.I am a genetic counselor and would never give this book to a family, but I noticed that some people who look at "Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parents' Guide" bought this book instead, so I wanted to check it out. From the title, I wasn't expecting much as the correct name is "Down syndrome" rather than "Down's syndrome."Diagnoses are named to honor the people who first described them--but that doesn't mean that they own them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most insightful guide to schizophrenia
This is a wonderful book in the series of Marohn's healthy mind guides.I write this as a mental health professional who has experience with holistic modalities and also with populations of severely impaired mental patients, schizophrenics included. The author looks at a broad spectrum of natural approaches to healing schizophrenia (not managing/maintaining the condition like conventional psychiatry does).Other than the confirmation of diagnostic criteria and prevalency data about mental illness, this book contradicts much of what professionals and the public are usually taught about the topic. The normal approach to schizophrenia is shown to be to a great extent counterproductive, as natural methods are shown from clinical and empirical reports to often help those diagnosed with schizophrenia recover and live drug-free.Natural biochemical therapies, homeopathic treatments, family systems, shamanic healing, osteopathy, and mind-body approaches such as Dr. Hamer's psychosomatic new medicine are described. The book works its way from the outside in as it explores the levels of healing that may be addressed to heal illness.Interesting clinical accounts are presented and readers are given clear evidence that schizophrenics can recover and that there are a variety of resources available to help this occur, ultimately being less expensive than a lifetime of mind-numbing drugs and additional medical expenses of the side effects of those drugs. The mental health system could be a much more ethical and humane institution of society if people were reading books like this instead of blindly accepting pharmaceutical pseudoscience - and people who actually understand and respect the scientific method will recognize how dubious are the claims of the pharmaceutical establishment and their followers.I commend this book's author for not being afraid to point out that drug therapies are more likely to impede recovery than foster recovery, including stats from World Health Organization research. It's about time that some people in the mental health field are shaken out of denial!

Mayo Clinic on Headache is the best resource I've seen for explaining what is known about headaches, how they originate, how to avoid them and how to reduce their duration and discomfort. The book's only weakness is that it came out before the research findings that COX-2 inhibitors (such as Vioxx) can be dangerous to your health. So be sure to discuss those products with your physician before taking them for headache relief.
