5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, reassuring, empowering, and potentially life-saving
An important book not only for the person with hydrocephalus, but for family and close friends as well. If you're looking for a book that explains hydrocephalus, shunts, shunt complications, symptoms, and everything in between in layman's terms, you've found it. There are so many things that is known about and that people need to know about hydrocephalus and shunts that it's not practicable for neuros and nurses to tell you about it all. So here's a better alternative: a book that has reliable information which you can read and reread as often as you need. It provides you with the knowledge you need to ask neuros the right questions and also to understand their answers. As a parent of a child who had a shunt placed in infancy (he hasn't needed revisions so far),I can't recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I wasn't told
I found this book to be very informative. I now understand much better with what I am dealing.I was diagnosised in November 1997 with hydrocephalus and had my first shunt operation two days after diagnosis. My neurosurgeon to my memory (I was so ill I was hoping someone would just cut my head off) did not tell me about what I could expect or not expect after the surgery or the possibility of needing a revision which I did have one and a half years later.I would highly recommend this book to anyone or the parent of any child diagnosed with hydrocephalus. However, I would like to see more infomation on adult onset hydrocephalus.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for the newly diagnosed
I bought this book when I was 18 weeks pregnant with my son who I was informed would have Hydrocephalus. I knew absolutely nothing of the condition, and this book really explained to me the condition and treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Amazing Story
This book inspired me so much that I have recommended it to all of my friends. I hope that I would have the strength to overcome such a devastating illness with the grace, humor, and perseverance that Megan Timothy has shown. It reminded me of Lance Armstrong's book about his struggle with cancer. Since reading Megan's book,I discovered that if you contact Crone House Publishing, you can get email updates on Megan's progress as she rides her bicycle alone around the United States. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Elaine, this really helped!
This book offers a ton of practical information for people who suffer from the 6 common types of headaches. My whole family shared the book. I suffer from hormonal headaches and found that information very helpful while another family member has migraines and is currently filling out her headache diary included in the book) so she can better understand what her triggers are. I loved that there were lots of lists and tips as well as reader-friendly answers to complicated medical questions. I've tried a handful of the recipes so far and they offered tasty and easy to make alternatives to favorite foods that have been identified as potential headache triggers. The reason there are different lists of foods for the different headaches is because each type of headache has different foods to choose and foods to lose. I recommend this book highly! It really helped two people in my family.

1-0 out of 5 stars still hungry
This was a disappointing book to me.I was excited to think I had found a book that would help me build a diet of items that were 'safe' to eat. This book, however, gave the typical lists of what not to eat.It is also pretty confusing because one page will list good foods to eat, for example, that are high in magnesium but includes standard trigger foods such as chocolate and nuts that are noted on other pages as being possible problems. It is like the author just copied the list from somewhere and didn't even bother to note which items are thought to be triggers for migraines. The book also has, in my opinion, a too light-hearted feel to it.I was hoping for some solid advice on what to eat in a no-nonsense tone...but didn't find here unfortunately.Maybe I would like the book better if I tried a few of the 21 recipes.I was just hoping for more than a "Peachy Cake" (one of the 21 recipes) book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An essential starting point...
After more than a year of fear, confusion, anger and spousal disagreements regarding our child's behaviors, my wife and I separated. Then we found out that our 14-year-old is almost certainly suffering from bipolar disorder, not just depression (the first diagnosis) or anxiety (the second.) Now, from houses 25 miles apart, we are beginning the journey toward appropriate medications, appropriate school placement, and understanding. I bought this book a month ago, and it took the whole month to read it. At 400 pages, it is nothing if not comprehensive. And it is scary as hell, but comforting as well. Mitzi Waltz is herself the parent of a bipolar teen, and she has a great gift for translating medical and psychological jargon into plain English. If you are in the same boat as we are, or if you have a young relative recently diagnosed with BP, buy this volume right now. Buy several. The price is great for what you get, and I suspect you will be referring to it continuously for years. It is not focused exclusively on teenage patients, either. Kids as young as eight have now been diagnosed with this miserable brain chemistry imbalance, which seems to be a life-long condition once it manifests. The book creates much-needed sympathy for BP victims, whose attitudes, actions and unpredictable moods can be infuriating and can turn parents against each other as both try different approaches to keeping their child safe and stable and successful. So far, our path has included two psychiatrists, four different medications, a four-day stay for the daughter in a juvenile mental health center, two school systems and now a home-bound program, and much heartbreak, frustration, sadness and screaming. Mitzi's book is the single best tool I've found to help myself cope.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Parents, Teachers and Doctors
Ms. Waltz has once again produced an excellent book that is clear and informative. In my practice of Psychiatry, I have found books like this are few and far between.I am using this book as a resource for all my Bipolar families. This book covers all topics related to Bipolar Disorderboth esoteric and day-to-day living issues. If you're a parent or a lovedone of a child (or adult)with Bipolar Disorder, read this. You will not gowrong. And after you're done, pass your copy onto your child's teacher ordoctor. It will help you all get together on the same page. It's criticalthat our kids get the help they need. This book will teach you how best toadvocate for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent guide for parents
Mitzi understands the relationship between parents and children who suffer from early-onset bipolar disorder. Her book addresses numerous issues that parents face on a day to day basis. She provides resources, support, andsolutions.Truly an excellent book and one that all parents of childrenwith bipolar disorder should keep at their fingers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Walking My Own Mother Home
I cannot tell you how much this book has helped me.My own mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's four months ago. It's almost eerie how some of the author's own experiences mirror mine as well.I gave the book to my sister and brother who are with me "waking mother home."My sister read it all the first night I gave it to her.She cried through most of it, but it helped her and us so much.Thank you, Rita Bresnahan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gifts received in the Midst of Pain
Walking One Another Home is a book not only for people dealing with Alzheimers in their family, but for everyone who has to walk a loved one home.Rita's openness in sharing her feelings on this pilgrimage, are not only touching but so very honest. It is in sharing her frustrations, and consequent revelations gained, that the author helps the reader learn how to let go of past and be present and aware of the gifts offered, often unknowingly, by their loved one. This book is a must for those who are caring for dying loved ones, for those whose loved ones have already passed and are struggling to make sense out of their loss, and for all of us whose parents are aging and soon will find ourselves walking this journey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars all about lifestyle changes
If you are looking to cure your migraines, you may want to check this book out.Since my sister has been getting migraines for the last 16 or so years, I have been telling her some of these things to get rid of them. Now that I suffer them as often as she does, I can't say that I have practiced what I preached, but I do believe that Zuzana Bic has the right idea of prevention through changes to your lifestyle.Basically, eat better, reduce stress, and get regular exercise. But she goes into detail to help the reader understand the physiology of the migraine disease and how changing your lifestyle will effect your migraines. If someone just told me that I needed to change these things, I would want to know how this would work. This book tells you.I do plan to follow her advise, and I like that it is not an elimination diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraines for 30 years, until reading this book!
This book is amazing! I had migraines for 30 years until reading this book. Over the years I tried every drug on the market, ending with Imitrex then Amerge. Even with Amerge I started half of all my days with a migraine. Now I have control over them and I no longer have them. Don't think that because you already eat well and are not overweight that the book won't help. I ate a good diet and wasn't overweight... I still had migraines and the book explained why. The Publishers Weekly review statement that "Their program, however, may seem too simplified and too general for longtime headache sufferers" is way off base! It's exactly what long term headache suffers need!

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works
This is a very comprehensive book onheadache prevention that ties togheter all the different lifestyle factors like food/nutrition, physical activity, and stress. And what is even better as that every tip and everystrategy given by the authors to achieve a gradual lifesytyle modificationactually works in practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful insights from an exceptional soul
How silly for those other reviewers to say this book didn't include "the family's experience with Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's disease."Or that the book didn't say enough about Alzeimer's itself. What do they want, a medical book? There are plenty of those. This is the unique story that only Patti, with her special place in history could tell, of how her father's disease brought her and her family tremendous pain, yet spiritual growth, and actual blessings. In so doing, she points the way to how we can continue to learn, as Americans, and as human beings, from these gifted leaders, the Reagans. I loved another book about Ronald Reagan, "How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life," by Peter Robinson. It told what Mr. Robinson had observed and learned from President Reagan as a speechwriter in his administration. It is a good book, but this one is even better, because of the vantage point, and insights of the person writing it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional, moving and painfully honest
It is obvious from the pages of this book that Patti Davis has indeed inherited her father's gift with words. What an absolutely beautiful book! Ms. Davis takes the reader along with her, and at times the rest of her family, on their very personal journey of pain and acceptance through the years of Ronald Reagan's struggle with the disease of Alzheimers.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not QuiteWhat I Expected
While I thought the book was well written, I was disappointed that more about the family's experience with Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's disease wasn't included. The title of the book is somewhat misleading, for that reason, in my opinion. The bulk of the book was more about the author's feelings and experiences than about her father's illness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comforting & Practicle Info
After checking this book from the library, I purchsed a copy as a reference. The author gives practicle activities which enable the caregiver and the patient to survive dementia with dignity.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful if you're looking for practical activity ideas
I'm an occupational therapist looking for specific ideas for activities that will interest dementia patients who can't participate in bingo and the other activities offered by a poorly run activities program in a typical nursing home. The dementia unit described in this book sounds wonderful, but not easily found in a long term care setting. Once again, I've found a book with great ideas that are impossible to carry out in the real world of long term care.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful book for family caregivers
It would have been useful to know, before purchasing this book, that most of the activities it describes are for use in group settings. As caregiver for a family member with dementia, I was hoping to find more material suited to one-on-one situations. While some of the activities can be adapted to the needs of individuals, the book as a whole doesn't provide much help for those living with a person who suffers from dementia.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is Power
When I was newly diagnosed this was one of the first books I bought. It helped me to understand terms used in MS, and also knowledge that gave me a small sense of control over the disease.Knowledge is power, and this helped me gain that feeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally helpful to someone in their first year
I found this book to be very comprehensive: addressing what MS is, what causes MS, symptoms of MS, diagnosis, symptom management, treatment options, and social aspects. It includes the technical description, but through the use of analogies, makes each description very tangible for the layperson.I found the section on medications (and their evolution) particularly helpful. This book reinforced much of what I've learned through doctors, websites, and support organizations and filled in the gaps where information was lacking. It's an excellent resource for someone who has been newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multiple Sclerosis bible
This is one of the best books ever written for the patient. It explains in clear and concise language all aspects of concern.I have it close at hand and anytime I have a question, 9 times out of 10 it is in the book.A must read for a newly diagnosed person.I call it my bible of MS.In it is a brief history of the disease and right up to the most up to date treatment options.Absolutely love it. ... As a New Mexico resident and a lover of the desert, I had high hopes for this book when I plucked it off a shelf and bought it based on the description on back.Clearly the author's story is poignant and inspiring, but that really gets lost in barely mediocre writing.Swander grossly minimizes details related to New Mexico and its cultures, and she does the same with her descriptions of mystical figures and religion, and these sort of bald descriptions & generalizations really weaken the power of the story and her credibility as a writer. This propensity also makes the story feel unfocused and unguided. The book just doesn't read very authentically.I wish I had a different experience reading it, but I didn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful and Inspiring
Swander does some important legwork for everyone who has suffered chronic illness and/or pain and wondered why, why, why, and how can I be healed ?! 5-0 out of 5 stars A Healing Journey
In The Desert Pilgrim, Iowan Mary Swander shares her journey from debilitating illness to physical and spiritual healing with the help of an Orthodox monk and an herbal healer in an Albuquerque barrio. Swander doesn't exaggerate the extent of her recovery or the power of her regained faith, yet there is no doubt she has been transformed by this experience and by the wisdom and generosity of Lu and Father Sergei. Swander's writing is clear and accessible, and her story is an inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent book by Bryna Siegel!
I read, "the world of the Autistic Child" a few years ago and it was just the best book on Autism out there. So informative, and such an interesting read.So I was extremely excited when this book was released. I immediately purchased it.You will not be dissapointed!! If you read "the world..." and enjoyed it then you will definately appreciate this book as well.I did however find the previous book more interesting, maybe because I was still "new" to the Autism world. Now after years of reads, and research, well there just isnt much "new" info out there that I haven't already read.Having said that..I still very highly recommend this book to add to anyones collection of books on Autism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somethings to think about with a grain of salt
I have not finished reading this book; yet like other reviewers I have some reservations. Bryna Siegel does a fine job of explaining Autistic Spectrum Disorders, and how it affects the development of a child. However, I find some of her conclusionsand statements to be potentially misleading, especially when since ASDs are still being researched, and not much is 100% definite. Interesting theories, but not necessarily facts. Having said that, use your judgement and don't miss out on the good information and experience that Bryna does offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
This is an exceptional resource for anyone who is interested in helping children with autism. There is a wealth of information in this 498 page book - based on research and professional experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone eventually might well needthis book.
Joanne Parrent, in her COURAGE TO CARE, gives hope to anyone with an elderly parent or other loved one.... Parrent's carefully thought through, detailed discussion of what to expect and how to handle each eventuality made my own life much easier and less guilt-ridden.I could be in the moment with my mother and stop worrying about whether she would remember what we'd done the minute before.Parrent also made me feel better about employing skilled home workers who lovingly, not only cared for my mother, but also sat with her, talking and playing music.I learned from Parrent's book that we had to live each minute at a time. ...THE COURAGE TO CARE was invaluable to me, as I know it will be for everyone who reads it.In fact, I wish I'd read this important book sooner so that I could have prepared myself for the inevitable. The crash course of reading the book, nonetheless, worked for me, as I know it will for others with loved ones who are losing their mental faculties.Parrent deserves a huge commendation for getting all this material into one book and making it readable, indeed engrossing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling read!
In 1953, when he was a robust 14-year-old, Charles L. Mee was stricken with viral polio. This memoir describes his struggle with polio, and also comments on the treatments (sometimes horrific) that were tried to beat this virus that, in 1953 alone, struck over 50,000 people. His struggle was not an easy one, and his later life wasn't either, but he comes to terms with his limitations, becoming a successful historian and playright. It's a real eye-opener, and he doesn't mince words, which makes for a compelling read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Source
For those interested in understanding the impact of polio, this is the definitive source. No one tells the story like Charles Mee. The depth of his insights are stunning. He makes a powerful comment on the human condition. This book is a MUST READ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good polio retrospective
From long experience with this area, Mee's accounts both of the era of his youth and the experiences of polio ring very true from the pen of an accomplished writer. One senses that Mee never really made peace with his disability and its impact, inasmuch as he was able to evade, compensate, head into intellectual endeavors, etc., so there are many polio/disability issues not well dealt with here. (Significantly it ends with his finding an oasis in the intellectual world of the Ivy League and the intellect.) However, one has to suspect that the decision to tell the story, with insight and honesty, may represent at long last a step in addressing what he may have hoped at one time to simply "leave behind." Perhaps there will be a sequel in which his historical training and writing skills are again focused on the complex interrelationships between disability, psyche and society. This is a good read, though, even if it is not the full story. ... Read more
