3-0 out of 5 stars This book says it all
When I read this book, it was a revelation. This lady said what I had been feeling and thinking. It is great to know you are not alone, you are not crazy and that all these weird things that have been happening are real, because they do happen to others. Honest, funny, touching but above all it helped me to accept my MS and get on with life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Appreciated this book!
All though I've been in denial, I finally read this book and it was very helpful!I needed the humor!I like to think of it as "The Girlfriends Guide to MS"Thank you Lorna!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lorna, we loved your book! Ignore others and keep writing!
Being a member of MS MOMS, I got myself an autographed copy of Lorna's first book. I also got a chance to meet her at an MS gathering, to talk to her about MS and her book. She was devastated by the errors and reviews. It saddened me to hear that she got negative comments because of the way it was published. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Fascinating
What an excellent book. I am a RN have atteneded many seminars, read many books on aging and Alzheimers, work in psychiatry and gero psychiatry. However, I learned many things new reading this book. I am taking notes and plan to read it again to make sure I do not miss anything. What would happen to the Alzheimer's epidemic if we all followed the suggestions in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are frightened by AD, read this book.
If you are interested in this book, you are probably over 50 and have a relative or friend who suffered from Alzheimer's disease (AD).You are probably frightened by even the faintest possibility of sharing such a fate. And, you want to inform yourself to do everything you can to prevent AD for yourself and loved ones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title- it's a pharmaphilic decoy
I was very disappointed. This book is basically an attack on alternative therapies through the lens of self serving conventional medicine politics rather than attempting to find any merit and mechanism of different alternative modalities. For instance the coverage of vitamins and supplements were ridiculously weak and even out of date with modern research recommendations from conventional medical schools e.g. the sunshine vitamin D link to MS in particular and the much higher emerging vitamin D RDAs in general. The vitamin coverage completely failed to examine the true supplement alternatives like the inexpensive, riveting megadose protocols and clinical results of Duke educated Dr Fred R Klenner and, independently, Canadian Dr. H.T.R. Mount. Likewise I found the discussion of enzymes, nutrition, and digestion lame. These are time critical propositions for the consideration of those deteriorating with a conventional sentence of central neuritis and other neuropathies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
As a person living with MS there were some things in this book that even I didn't know. Its good to have all the correct information from a medical professional. I carry this book with me all the time and refer to it whenever someone tells me, I should do this or that for my MS. We need lots more books like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely good place to start
I am a psychiatrist who has referred this book to many families to help provide examples and insights regarding the care of parents with dementia. This is not a "perfect" book with cookbook instructions of what to do and when to do it. This is initially a painfully frank discussion of the author's experiences with her mother's illness and the author's ambivalence regarding the illness. 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, practical guide to caring for Alzheimer's parent
Sherry Bell's Visiting Mom is a practical guide to caring for a person with Alzheimer's, including coping with the difficult decision to institutionalize a parent.Sherry's concern for her mother's well-being and happiness is evident throughout the book, and she offers some very specific suggestions for making the visit more productive and more pleasant for all members of the family. Her agonizing over the ultimate decision to put her mother in a nursing home is a reminder that this action induces guilt in everyone, no matter how hard they have worked to maintain a good quality of life and to look out for the parent's best interests.4-0 out of 5 stars Hate to be the lone dissenting voice here...
...but the book was a wee bit of a disappointment for me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I just finished reading this book and found I could not put it down.It is one of the most enlightening, well written, importantbooks on living with a disability that I've ever read. The author's descriptions are so precise I really feel as if I'm there or following behind her. I can almost smell the food as she describes it or see the cobblestones on the uneven surface as she tries to manuver. 5-0 out of 5 stars True to Life
I read this book in one sitting and I really enjoyed it.I was impressed with the author's honesty and really appreciated her candor in reactions to each new development in her disease.5-0 out of 5 stars Live life to its fullest

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
Of interest; the book's authors are throat and mouth specialists. Also, they are not aware that their institution ( Johns Hopkins) is making great strides in SCI research.that's a invaluable contact they neglected to study.Bold predictions are made claiming that SCI will not be cured within several decades, 100 years etc.Yet they tell the reader to move on with your life and still have hope for SCI therapies. Here's the problem- they do the worst thing imaginable, they condescend to the patient, providing false hope, if they clain SCI treatments (valid ones) are hundreds years away, then why should patients stay hopeful if it will not help them or anybody with a SCI in our lifetimes? These are serious claims from authors whose credentials do not include spinal cord injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a real life approach!
Since my SCI in May of 1999 we have accumulated a pile of books dealing with various aspects of SCI.At 1/10th the price, this book is many times better than any of the others.Their down to earth approach leads you from the point of injury until the day you make the transition from patient to the new you.Outstanding! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for someone who needs hope communicating with someone with Alzheimer's -Type Dementia'
An invaluable and comprehensive guide to not only the disease Alzheimers, but to the possibilities for the patient and caregiver.Teqniques found in "Validation Breakthrough" were invaluable to me during a 1 week introductory Pastoral Care Course set in a Memory Care Unit allowing me to cut through the many mysteries of the disease and minister immediately to the individual.I would think a key peice for a family new to living with Alzheimers.Naomi Feil speaks in an easy to understand language of love and life long experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book
I am using this book for research and it's one source that really effectively for communication and the understanding of one who has Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation Breakthrough

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK PROVIDED HOPE
This was the first book I bought when my daughter was diagnosed with MS.I had to admit, I knew of MS, donated to it but had no idea what it was all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Responding to "Research...........Accuracy.........but a fairly good read."
I don't usually get too bothered by negative reviews I read here, but I had to say a few words in response to this ridiculous review.Obviously, this person missed the intent of the book, most likely because s/he does not have MS.Williams's time spent in the military is not what prompted him to write the book; therefore, it is not the main point he is trying to make.Perhaps since the person who wrote this review does not actually have the disease, s/he could not focus on the main issue - dealing with MS.Speaking from personal experience as one who does have MS, I can promise you that just knowing someone who has it, even if that person is your own child, is not knowledge enough to say you truly understand what living with it is like.Additionally, her/his daughter might be taken aback by the implication that she "overcame" MS; sadly, until there is a cure, the disease will never be overcome. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "What would you do to save your brother's life?"
A couple of years ago I had a cancer scare. There was a growth in my kidney that the doctors said was either a dense cyst or a tumor. So I had to have a CAT scan every six months for a year in order to monitor the growth. If it stayed the same, I was OK.But if it expanded, cancer was the most likely diagnosis.Fortunately, it turned out to be a cyst. But I came away from that experience with the knowledge that things can go terribly wrong in my body even if I do everything right. How do you deal with such a worst-case scenario, and how far do you go for a cure?
3-0 out of 5 stars Science vs. Profitability vs. Humanity
The book itself is compelling as it glides you through the journey Jaime Heywood (the protagonist) takes in order to engineer a cure for his brother who has been diagnosed with ALS.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and uplifting:
I read a review of this book and instantly wanted to read it.It is a heartbreaking story of an amazing family and the sacrifices one brother makes for another. It is well researched and although science is one of the major stars here, the author makes it understandable to the lay person.Itmade me laugh and cry along with the family - the kind of book you save to read again.I will follow Steven's progress with care and keep this family in my heart for long after the book is finished. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for craniotomy patients and their caretakers
Lots of valuable and good advice and resources for both craniotomy patients and caretakers. But the portrayal of NYC and its boroughs is incomplete and unfair (p. 179 of the softcover.) I had brain surgery in 2005 and I live in NJ and volunteer in NYC. I find the people there compassionate, thoughtful and considerate. That's 99.99% of them. They help me on the subway, across the street and do countless other nice things! Also, it's 2006 and Donald treats his wife, Sue, like chattel. He's very patronizing. I know what Sue had to do to make Donald and Shannon comfortable. She cooked, cleaned and did everything that a hard working Aide does. And believe me it's more work and more intense for a brain injured person.
5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone having to come to grips with recovering
Smile And Jump High!: The True Story Of Overcoming A Traumatic Brain Injury is the moving and compelling testimony of Shannon, a young woman who suffered a near-fatal auto accident. A devastating brain injury forces Shannon to embark on a grueling four-year journey of gradually re-learning simple physical skills, walking, talking, and coping with residual effects that drastically impair her problem-solving ability, behavioral temperament, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars A well written, concise, yet comprehensive discussion...
Dr. Pathak did a wonderful job of explaining the various aspects involved in Spasmodic Torticollis and its clinical course. Even my son, a physician, was not really clear onhow that differed from Alzheimer's.Dr. Gillick's book outlines a typicalcourse of dementia, from early to late stage using a fictional compositepatient drawn from her medical experience. She interstices this story withfactual material on legal, political, medical research, and cost issues.Ihave recommended this book to friends and colleagues interested in aging, particularly related to brain assaults. There is much good material inthis book even if the patient is not a diagnosed Alzheimer's sufferer. ...
