5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
"What If It's Not Alzheimer's" will help all caregivers to cope with the loss of their loved ones as cognitively sound individuals. Whether Alzheimer's, multi-infarct, Parkinson's, FTD, or any of the dozens of other dementias, the perpetual grief and mourning felt by the caregivers will be the same. Dementia is a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of multi-infarct dementia is told in my own recently published memoir. I recommend "What If It's Not Alzheimer's" to anyone whose loved one is experiencing this terrible disease.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Knowing nothing about frontal lobe dementia, I found this a great resource in finding out what I can do to make my family member more comfortable, as well as exploring the resources available to me. Occasionally I got bogged down with the scientific reports, but overall it is a very accessible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An updated handbook packed from cover to cover with tips
While general public knows Alzheimer's best among the many dementias in existence, but Playing The Numbers is the first to address FTD, a specific group of dementias and one of the largest non-Alzheimer's groups. The resources and reference material comprising hat If It's Not Alzheimer's? provides the non-specialist general reader with an updated handbook packed with from cover to cover with tips and information for caregivers and sufferers alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bell at the Helping Hands center almost 10 years ago. It is an amazing program and she is the most amazing person I have ever met. This book teaches you the fundamentals of how the Day Care operates and how to communicate with those afflicted with Dementia. After all these years I still rely on this book and its teachings in my work as a therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea
This book was very easy to read and understand and for someone just starting caregiving the book gives some good ideas. I do think though that for more indepth information there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best book on caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease
As a professional in the Alzheimer's field, as well as a family caregiver, I have read dozens of books on caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Though there are many excellent ones (Claudia J. Strauss's "Talking to Alzheimer's" and Bell & Troxel's "The Best Friends' Book of Alzheimer's Activities" are other favorites), this is the first book I most recommend to anyone on the challenging journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. It is simply superb. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I just wanted to learn how to do the triangle math puzzle
I returned the book. It turned out to be page after page of number problems. I have the Nintendo game and it's a lot of fun to use. There are more games and puzzles. One puzzle is triangle math. I cannot figure out what is expected of me. The instructions are no help. The internet is no help. Help!

5-0 out of 5 stars It really helps, i think it's great!
When i first bought this book, i was in need for something to help me about my forgetfulness and memory loss. Meaning: I found that i have not been able to memorize a license plate of a car that just drove by for even more then 15 secs! I felt pretty pathetic. So i researched the web and choose this book here. Let me tell you, it's fun to use, i think, and it works!

5-0 out of 5 stars it's working for me...
i'm absolutely remembering more, and feel sharper. the log in the back shows me that i'm remembering between 4 and 5 words more on the word test, and i'm getting faster at all the exercises. i'm almost a whiz at dinner calculating the tip. new ground for me!

3-0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about glucosamine + chondroitin
Put it this way, I have joint pain, and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. But I have my doubts about them, too, especially with regard to the claim that they "rebuild cartilage" (note: I am not a doctor, and I am just a layperson and reader of average knowledge, who has done some reading on this).
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Theo's glucosamine/chondroitin cure works
I have been investigating health issues for almost 30 years, and Dr. Theo's book is the best one I have read concerning the solution to arthritis.I am also one of the victims of arthritis because I have literally walked or run for thousands of miles in my lifetime. So, my knees and hips need constant attention, and I can personally confirm that glucosamine and chondroitin supplements work. The doctor is right that different brands vary a lot in quality, and I am glad he listed some good brands in his book.He also tells the exact amount of each supplement that you must take in order to get effective results.Although I did not see the GNC brand mentioned in the book, I have found that the GNC chewable Tri-Flex candy supplements work for me.You'll be glad you bought this very informative book if you have arthritis or know someone who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have arthritis this book can help
The idea is so simple it is amazing no one thought of it sooner.

A great book for healthcare professionals and parents who are planning to use this diet for epilepsy treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars SEIZURE-FREE!!!!I BOUGHT THIS BOOK AND NEVER LOOKED BACK!
I reluctantly bought this book to join the sea of books I already had regarding seizures and other diagnoses....my son was born disabled and developed seizures shortly after birth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative!
I read this edition after reading the 2nd edition, and I couldn't be happier with it.This edition includes information about the diet's use in infants, as well as tube feeding issues. I was very glad to see the added info, as my 4 month old son began the diet recently and we're still fine-tuning it.Thanks to this book, not only do I understand more about the diet's "quirks", I feel I'm more able to assist the dietitians and neurologists in the planning of my son's diet.I highly recommend it to anyone who's considering implementing the diet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Plain Talk is just what this book is
The title of this book is just what it is - Plain and simple talk about Alzheimer's disease. But it is not only for families and clinicians. It is for anyone interested in the disease and how it affects not only those afflicted, but those around them.I have no family member or friend with this disease, however I found the book easy to read and easy to understand. Dr. Kraus has presented this subject in a sensitive, yet very informative manner.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to broaden their knowledge of this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book

5-0 out of 5 stars There is hope and there is help!
I normally wouldn't respond to a review of my own book, but I couldn't let this one go.
2-0 out of 5 stars Anecdotal with a lot of grasping at straws
The focus of the book seems to be how to try every snake oil solution first, add in a lot of prayer and then seek help from qualified ABA therapists. It is informational and a good read - for what NOT to do. Try - 'Overcoming Autism' as your first book - Lynn Koegel and Claire LaZebnik. I give it two stars since it doesn't really educate how to approach autism so much as how NOT to approach autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The #1 Intro Book
As the parent of an Autistic son, I cannot say how appreciative I was to have found this book. When you first hear of Autism and think that your child could be on the spectrum, you can feel lost. When we were looking at where to turn, we found Lynn's book. The wonderful thing is that the book gives you hope mixed with lots of practical advice and some ideas on where to turn.

5-0 out of 5 stars NAET
I have read the book and agree that the title can be misleading.HOWEVER, that being said...I have brought my autistic twins to a NAET practitioner...after the first treatment, I already see a difference. My oldest twin is able to put 10 words together in a sentence (2 days ago he struggled to put 3 words together). My youngest twin is less agitated and more happy.Until you bring your autistic child to a NAET practitioner and at least try 1 appt. you should not judge the content of the book or its title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it with open mind and you will learn!
My son,Jonathan was diagnosed with Autism when he was 3.5 yrs. old and I was faced with the dilemma as a practicing M.D. for 16 years in allopathic medicine.I was told by many so called "specialists" that he will never recover since he was heavily impacted. After visiting NAET website, I read her books and immediately signed up to learn how to practice NAET on my son.Jonathan is on the road to recovery!I've helped not only my son but other autistic children as well as ADD, and ADHD children. Dr.Devi is a medical doctor and a chiropractor as well as a acupunturist, and a doctor of oriental medicine. But most of all, she was a patient who suffered enough to truely "CARE" about others who live in quiet desperation. She has finally connected the dots between Eastern medicine to Western medicine to benefit the humanity. She strongly encourages autistic children to continue with ABA and other modalities(PT,OT,Speech Therapy etc.) while NAET is ongoing. Be open-minded and humble enough to learn what NAET is all about! It may change your life if you let it!

5-0 out of 5 stars NAET WORKS ON AUTISM!
Steven, a seven year old autistic child began treatment on the same day when I started my treatment. I distinctly rememberhis appearance on the first day of his visit in Dr. Devi's office. He was bumping into things and people, had no awareness of the surroundings or people, was flapping his hands, pulling his sleeves, chewing his clothes, running back and forth in the waiting room aimlessly, etc. Then I didn't see him for a while, because we both had appointments at different times. I saw him the other day again, and I couldn't recognize him. His mother said he had 11 treatments. He has not yet treated for immunizations. He was sitting in the TV room with other children and watching TV calmly. What a transformation! I wonder why more people don't look for NAET or take their autistic children to NAET practitioners! Steven's dramatic changes forced me to read this book. What a book! Great information for the parents of autistic children. As usual lots of useful self-help tips for the parents. This book is packed with information. Everyone with an autistic child or relative must read this book. This can give a new meaning to your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a prescription
Wow - what a great way to fall asleep.I've tried meditation/relaxation audio recordings before, but was often disappointed because the person had an annoying voice, there was strange sci-fi background music, or it was downright cheesy. After both me and my boyfriend being on a crash-and-burn cycle of waking up early for work and going to sleep exhausted only to get no rest - we were desperate. We were both separately prescribed sleep aids by our doctors (I had Lunesta, he got Ambien). At first, these were a huge relief just to get some sleep but made us groggy and we agreed it wasn't a long term solution.I got Healthful Sleep and after a few initial giggles on his part, he was snoring away after 10 minutes.I love this lady's voice, and the "guided imagery" is really just soothing bedtime words - like when you were sick as a child and your mother would come tuck you in with cool hand on your forehead and say, "just go to sleep now, everything's okay".I can't recommend this enough - even my boyfriend asks at bedtime if we can put in the tape of "that lady talking".I'm happy to say we are Ambien & Lunesta free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very relaxing...this truly works!
I bought this as part of the Wellness Pack that included "Stress" and "General Wellness" CDs, but "Healthful Sleep" is by far our favorite of the three."Healthful Sleep" has changed my husband's life.He used to take medicine to help him relax at night. He could sleep, but it wasn't restful...he thrashed, had nightmares, and always felt tired - even after 12+ hours of sleep. After using this, he was able to quit taking medicine because he began sleeping so restfully.I also sleep much more soundly and feel more rested. The mornings after I listen to this CD, I feel what I can only describe as 10 years younger. It occurs to me that truly healthful sleep would certainly improve general wellness and prepare you to deal effectively with stress. If you can only afford one, get "Healthful Sleep".

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Meditation CD!
I have almost all of Belleruth Naparstek's Meditation CD's and they are simply the best. The Healthful Sleep one is just a calming way to exit into the night.Even if you take sleep aids, it still is very relaxing. She simply has the most calming voice. So, if you need help in any area....every one of her CD's are the best.Believe me!I've tried many others! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work in the real world of Alzheimer's Disease
I sent this book back, it could encourage unproductive activity situations. Although there are some good activities mentioned in this book, most of the activities outlined either simply don't work or are, at worst, counter productive for Alzheimer's persons. The author, who appears to lack knowledge of dementia and activities (she is a nurse not a RT) should become acquainted with Reisberg's 7 Stages of Alzheimer's or Johnson and Johnson's Alzheimer's as a 'trip back in time' article (American J. of Alzheimer's Disease, April, 2000). Just because a person works at a facility which cares for demented persons does not mean she knows what she is talking about. I wonder if this person has a degree in Gerontological Nursing or Gerontology? This author ill-advises readers to use activities that aid in "reality orientation" or "24 hour reality orientation" for a person with dementia. That idea is so dated and counter-productive it is ridiculous. The requirement for 24 hour reality orientation in nursing facilities is currently being either changed or questioned by most gerontologists. For example, the trend is for changes in the 24 hour RO requirement written into the policy and procedures for dedicated dementia wings or for nursing facilies (since they are running over 60 percent dementia),where the Activity Director validates the Alzheimer's person's delusions. Why? Because RO simply doesn't work or delievers a bad message for most demented persons. Unlike depression or delirium, demented persons have lost their abilities to think, remember and reason. So instead person-centered activities are the trend, where the activity accomopanies the AD person on his or her "trip back in time" instead of imposing your reality on the different reality of the AD person. When the Alzheimer's person has time-traveled back to age 20 or 30 and she is told she has grandchildren or an 80 year old husband, the only result of this correction will be either an argument or a message to the AD person that she is dumb! In summary, reality orientation does not work for dementia persons and should be restricted to depressed or mildly confused elders only. RO was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome men in Alabama and then became a national requirement for all nursing homes. But nursing homes house mainly demented persons now. So this outdated procedure is counter productive for demented persons. Activities focused on person-centered care are the current trend. Person-centered activities do mostly the opposite of what is suggested in this really bad book. Person-centered activities use validation instead of reality orientation and are matched with the 7 stages/sub-stages of AD persons in sink with the person's "trip back in time."

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding PD--A Self-Help Guide--A review
A well-written, nicely organized basic introduction and self-help guide written from the perspective of a physician suffering from Parkinson's Disease (PD).This paperback manual explores both the physical and mental sides of dealing with a chronic, devastating illness. It provides strategies and tips for both the sufferer and the caregiver. My only reservation is that, at times, I wished the author would have provided more detailed information on specific, recommended techniques designed to aid the patient.Highly recommended reading.

"Understanding Parkinson's Disease" is a well-written book introducing a patient to life as a Parkinson's patient.I purchased this book to pre-screen it for my parents and found that it was a good book togive them because of it's positive discussion about the disease. If youknow a Parkinson's patient who refuses to read up about the disease(because they don't want to read about all the restrictions they will haveto face in their future) this is a good "first" book. The"Self Help Guide" has a pro-active upbeat approach to workingwith the disease. It doesn't spend a lot of time belaboring how miserablethe future will be, but focuses on how to deal with the present. SinceDr. Cram has Parkinson's Disease himself his viewpoints about the diseasehelp give credibility and enlightenment to the reader. This booksummarized all aspects of the disease while showing how to live with thesymptoms. It is a good starter book for preparing to live with Parkinson'sDisease. Purchase "Caring for the Parkinson patient" by Huttonfor a more in-depth review of Parkinson's and how to live (or care forsomeone) with the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally...A plain speaking book about Parkinson's Disease
Dr. David Cram has written a very touching and informative book about Parkinson's Disease that I encourage anyone who has been diagnosed with PD or who knows someone who has been diagnosed with PD to check out. Dr. Cramwho was dianosed ten years ago with PD writes from personal knowledge andcovers everything from symptoms to the newest drug therapies. I alsoenjoyed the comments interspersed throughout the book from patients, physicians, nurses, counselors and therapists. This is a very encouragingbook and I recommend it highly! ... Read more

I have a new life now. After reading this book and Epilepsy: A New Approach by Adrienne Richard and Joel Reiter, M.D. I have a new life.Words cannot not express my gratitude or how this book has changed my life in just a matter of weeks.I've never gone this long without a seizure since I was 13.Usually every week.I think it has almost been 6 weeks now.I can't believe how simple it was.And all I did was the basic things.I still haven't employed everything.I still have my auras but they are changing and I am incorporating more of the strategies to reduce them.I have a new life.If you want to change your life, read these two books.I don't know how to express my thanks to these authors. It has changed my entire outlook and my confidence and my hope for my future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be careful when reading this book
I am not a neurologist but have a strong personal interest in epilepsy. I read this book with great care. There are many chapters of significant merit including chapters 10-20. These chapters include the seizure taming effects of relaxation and certain types of music, doing things to prevent seizure progression when an aura is felt, lots of general information on epilepsy that is organized on a gender or age basis, the challenges of finding employment, and advice on a whole host of life issues that people with epilepsy often face. These are even more thoroughly covered in a number of other references which I have also read that come from the medical community.

Some more usual information for neuropathy sufferers laid out in an easy to understand and follow format. This book in the series does not have so many other personal case histories as the other two publications and was not as useful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This book, gave me the knowlege to go to my Dr and tell him I was not going to take anymore perscriptions as no matter what i had been taking, including, neurontin, messed my brain up even though it might have helped with the pain.I noticed how so many said vitamin B was such a help and I am nowusing vitamins to combat my problem.Thank you for putting the book together and giving us hope that we are not alone in this fight within our own bodies. The Dr's comment with a smile was"Congratulations, you've graduated! You don't need to come back for six months"

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is scientifically based and valid.
Anyone who takes the time to really read and comprehend this book will come away understanding that the restriction of fat in the diet stopped the progression of MS for nearly ALL of the people who strictly followed the diet, and that this is backed by following those hundreds of dieters for 35+ years. There is only one option on the diet, which is lower saturated fat to under 15 grams and unsaturated fat to under 50 grams a day.Any deviations will not succeed and therefore this is not a diet in which you can pick and choose what to follow.I guess if you have that information and follow it, you might not need the book. But, the book is full of substantiating scientific information which supports the restriction of fats, and gives much hope, and it's also full of recipes, so I wouldn't be without it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book
My wife was diagnosed with MS in January, 2006 at the age of 47. This has had a big impact on her in coming to terms with this diagnosis. However, she is determined not to let the illness get her down. She has researched and spoken to people and was put onto the MS Diet book.
3-0 out of 5 stars MS diet book technical info
I have heard of Dr. Swank's MS diet and wanted to try it, as I cannot afford the Avonex anymore.Even though I found the book very educational and chock full of techinical information, like everything else, there is no cure for MS.I feel losing weight and any low carb diet would work just as well.I did appreciate the kinds of oils to use and controversial subject of mulk and milk products. It as a good read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
This book contains not only the latest medical and scientific information on the physical aspects of Alzheimer's, but a "what to do if" section that offers suggestions when specific behavioral problems are encountered. For example, what can the caregiver do when the Alzheimer's patient does not wish to bathe, change clothes for a week, go to the doctors, etc.?This book relieves some of the stress of caring for a person with Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
THE MAYO CLINIC ON ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE will help all caregivers to cope with the loss of their loved ones as cognitively sound individuals. Dementia is a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which weusually place our fellow human beings. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of this disease is told in my own recently published memoir. I recommend the Mayo Clinic book to anyone needing current professional information about this terrible disease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done!
I think I now have every book written on Alzheimer's, since I had two parents with it and felt compelled by the experience of caring for them to even write my own book on the subject, but Dr. Petersen has really put together a very comprehensive guide which you should have if you suspect that your loved one may be developing it. The behaviors caused by Alzheimer's are complex to understand and manage, but this book will help you through it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, easy reading!
This book is informative on all aspects of partial seizure disorders, from discovery to diagnosis and treatment. I loved how easy it was to read. I read this book in less than 2 days!My only disappointment is that the book didn't touch a little more on the psychological impact of the disorders (and subsequent consequences).

4-0 out of 5 stars A quick read....
.......with basic factual info. A must have if you were recently diagnosed with partial seizures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a needed gap in epilepsy literature
When searching through libraries for information on epilepsy, I've always been able to find a lot of information on generalized seizures and little to no information on partial seizures. There is usually only a paragraph or two on them in books that primarily address other kinds of epilepsy. After repeatedly coming across the same information -- information I already knew -- I was getting tired of looking. Then I found this book, which is the exact opposite -- it is almost entirely about partial seizures, with a few paragraphs at the beginning about generalized seizures.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - I love this book!
After purchasing several books regarding MS I finally found this one and thank goodness I did! I was tired of the long-winded explanations and sad stories regarding the disease. I've gotten enough of that from my doctors. What I wanted, this book offered - blunt honesty and easy navigation to the questions I had. I loved it so much that I bought each of my family members a copy and now consider it one of my favorite books - maybe not my favorite topic, but my favorite book. I highly recommend it to other MS'ers!
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST MS book for the newly diagnosed
When I was diagnosed with MS almost 3 years ago, I had a hard time finding a book about MS that didn't say that I would end up in a wheel chair so I need to start shopping now, until I found this one. This book is HIGHLY informative, and it has given me a TON of valuable information.I highly recommend this book for anyone newly diagnosed, or knows someone with MS.

Editorial Review

"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every person who can read should read this book!
The Promise of Sleep should be a number one bestseller, worldwide. It is one of those books that has a long-lasting impact on one's life. Much in this book benefits those without sleep disorders as well. We owe Dr. Dement our gratitude for providing this valuable information. Thank you, Dr. Dement!
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source of info for some people
"The Promise of Sleep" is theeminent Dr. Dement's magnum opus for the masses. It contains more information than most of us will ever want to know about sleep. It is a long and intricate book, and it reads like a grant proposal. Most of us will read the sections that apply to us, and will use the book as a reference.I didn't read the whole thing and neither did any of you. So if you plan to read the whole thing... you are dreaming. But I find myself returning to this book repeatedly, for various health-related reasons. Here I discuss the people I think will benefit from this book, and why. Then I discuss what I believe to be Dr. Dement's biases, for better or worse. Finally, I discuss some other books which you might consider in addition to, or instead of, this one.
