3-0 out of 5 stars Valid Approach or Infomercial?
I purchased this book based upon its title, "The Healing Power of Neurofeedback," while noting its subtitle, "The Revolutionary LENS Technique. . ." To be honest, these are misleading as they should have been inverted. It would have been better to have named the book, "The Lens Technique: One Approach to Neurofeedback." The book, sadly, reads like an infomercial for the "LENS Technique" created by Len Och and was written by one of his disciples, Stephen Larsen, who expounds upon the wonders of this interesting, but certainly controversial approach to neurofeedback that uses extremely low-level radio ways to help "drive" each individual's EEG. Dr. Larsen constantly refers throughout his book something to the effect that "Len Och says this" or "Len Och says that." It almost seems as if Len Och should have written the book, rather than Stephen Larsen. Interestingly, "treatments" are often no longer than one second (!) in length which would appear to be almost nothing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for those researching neurotherapy
I have been a layman advocate of Neurotherpy since the mid-nineties. My youngest son was a low performing high school student who had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. All total he had approximately 40 treatments of eeg-neurofeedback using the EEG Spectrum protocol after trying Ritalin, which he could not tolerate. After neurofeedback treatment, but still with very little confidence, he reluctantly entered college. One day in an algebra class he realized that for the first time in his academic life that not only was he paying attention, he was following what the professor was saying, and he then realized that the change was probably due to the neurotherapy treatments. He is now a confident, capable college graduate doing a complicated job that he loves and went after himself. He is a highly funtional person and I am a proud father.
5-0 out of 5 stars ***** A Master Shaman Meets a Medical Magician *****
As a clinical hypnotherapist, and a former sufferer of anxiety/panic/bipolar and PTSD, I consider myself fortunate to have found this treatment protocol for my own troublesome disorders. Indeed I have no doubt that this technigue -- LENS --is right on target scientifically and spiritually. That is, by whatever means and name, one must shift the brain-heart's electromagnetic field patterns that have become phase-locked into dysfunctional rhythms in order to invoke a healing that lasts long-term. Whether this is accomplished by a supplemental biofeedback device or a native healer's energetic resonant relationship with the patient, the result can be the same: instant conversion to a state of balance, stability, wellness. I highly-recommend this book as one offering the best of the best ideas focused on faster relief of chronic psychophysiological conditions that have resisted "talk therapy" as well as pharmacological correction heretofore.

5-0 out of 5 stars My review of Tics and Tourette's
Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments by author Sheila J. Rogers is a great book for anyone, especially people that have tics or knows someone that has tics. This book brings out that, "it is estimated that eighteen per cent of the children in the United States are affected by tics.
5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!
This book offers a such a practical approach to addressing tic disorders! While I do not suffer from tics or tourette's, I have friends and coworkers with children that do! I have also shared this book with some friends who are getting thier PHD in Neuropsychology! I think being your own "detective" is the key to trying to get better -- to use preventative medicine by identifying and then avoiding those triggers that can make your condition worse! The case studies are heartwarming and inspiring and I look forward to the day when alternative or non-drug approaches will be more widely recognized as healthy and effective options for not only tics and tourettes, but other disorders and ailments too! A must-read for adults with or parents of children with tics and Tourettes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Introduction to Neurofeedback
The book is very-well written and easy to read.It is a lovely introduction to neurofeedback. The book presents history of neurofeedback, applications with focus mostly on the clinical side, with many interesting anecdotal stories where neurofeedback helped people who suffered from epilepsy, alcohol addiction and attention deficit disorder. There is some mention of the use of neurofeedback for personal improvement, peak performance and spiritual growth.

This is an intelligently written book, with a history of neurology and neuroscience, followed by an explanation of neurofeedback, and personal accounts from those who have used it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A how to "Talking to Alzheimer"guide
I first saw this book in the waiting room of a Dr. my mother was meeting with.I didn't have too much time to get into it then so I purchased it later and what a tremendous book, so easy to read and it had situations I am currenlty dealing with and the appropriate responses.I took it to my support group for caregivers and shared it with the group, some were going to purchase the next day. My thanks toClaudia Strauss for writing it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
Dementia a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of this disease is told in my own recently published book. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. TALKING TO ALZHEIMER'S will help all such caregivers to cope.
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference for Alzheimer's caregivers/family members
I am in my second read of this little book and it is full of helpful ideas about THE VISIT to Alzheimer patients (or anyone with impaired memory.) 5-0 out of 5 stars Good overall book; ideal for newly diagnosed.
I burned through this book in a weekend, so curious to know what was in store for me as a newly diagnosed person. I found it to be comforting (which I needed at the time), but light in some of the issues I have subsequently faced (such as unsympathetic employers, inability to pay for injection medicines). I'd like to see a book on the challenges of everyday life for newly diagnosed...I think I could have benefitted from someone else's experinces.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
being too frugal to purchase the 2004 version, i wanted to see if first i would like it, so i bought the very inexpensive 2002 edition.these comments are focused only on the 2002 edition.blackstone writes in a very easy to understand manner.she talks about things that are most important to the person with m.s.she identifies relevant topics.at times, i wished that she would have gone into more detail on some topics.on the other hand, it is so easy to read and suggestions are very helpful.on the other hand (is that 3 now?) the outline by days and months is not terribly logical and makes it less convenient to reference information.most people with m.s. will devour this book the first weekend.it compares favorably with similar books.it was well worth the purchase price and i would recommend this book.again, i have not looked at the 2004 edition and i can't comment on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Powerful Book I have Ever Read
This is the most beutiful book I have ever read. The descriptive writing and use of imagery makes you want to jump into the lives of these sisters. More than anything, you wish you could have known Jenifer, talked to her, just for a few hours. I recommend this book to everyone. I plan to give it to my entire family for our last week of summer vacation--it was just amazing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok, here goes....
First off, I would like to say that my heart goes out to Jenifer and I did tear up at certain times, especially the end. But I am reviewing a book, so here goes...like other readers I really could've done without the family flashbacks, I just didn't care. I really wanted this book to focus on her diagnosis and more how she dealt with the fact that she was going to die. However, I found that this book focused on other people in her life A LOT...her sisters, friends, and honestly I just wanted to hear from her and how she was feeling. I just skimmed through most of the book to get to the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial
I really don't understand what all of the raves are about--this book was downright annoying. It's one big name-dropper of a story that isn't at all about living life to its fullest. It's a somewhat impersonal account of Jenifer Estess and her famous friends creating Project ALS, and what a hard worker Jenifer is, and how much her sisters loved her...blah blah blah. When it is Jenifer telling the story (but see below), it comes off as arrogant and shallow.I would have much rather heard about her thoughts on her estrangement from her dad and brother as she was dying (which was glossed over as "I don't really care") and what it was really like to be dying. There were small parts of the book that did seem authentic but were totally rendered worthless when I read "I died on December 16...." and then the book goes on for another chapter.Okay, obviously these aren't her thoughts. What else about this story was fabricated?Sorry Ben Stiller and Sara Jessica Parker, but this book was not worth my time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book was nice to have around when I needed to talk to someone about how I felt, but felt guilty complaining when the people I was taking care of were going through such a difficult time. It was a very helpful companion and good to see what others have gone through and tried. I recommend it if you find yourself in the same unfortunate situation as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength For Caregivers, Understanding for CareProfessionals
This book offers solace and empathy to the caregivers of dementia patients. It presents the hard truths of this frightening disease from the caregiver's view, empathetically and humanely. From the voices of other caregivers who struggled through the course of this disease come very down-to-earth ideas and comfort for the caregivers who follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Only More Physicians Would Read This Book!
As a physician specializing in Preventive Medicine for adults, I can highly recommend this book. This is an excellent and thoroughly researched review of brain function and pathology and the accessible treatments recommended by Dr. Perlmutter make sense physiologically in terms of really attempting to heal what appears to be going wrong in each disease or degenerative state. What is so tragic in medicine today is that so few physicians remember their basic science, or make any effort to remain real students of the human body. They just memorize a treatment protocol for each diagnosis, and try each medication as they are presented by the pharmaceutical companies, and that unfortunately, becomes the "standard of care" in the medical community. Most physicians get virtually no training in nutrition, and physiology and biochemistry are endured in the first year or two of medical school and forgotten. It is wonderful to see Dr Perlmutter bring this science back to the table inlooking at the brain, and then to look first at healing thebrain with the nutrients that it needs to repair itself and restore the natural neurochemical balance, bloodflow, conductivity and stability that it needs to function properly. It's a true genius who can write such a book so that a physician can read it and remember his or her important first years of medical school, and the interested and non-medical reader can also read it and comprehend enough to use this valuable reference to take better care of their own brain and learn how to help a loved one with a crippling mental or neurological disease. Highly recommended reading! www.stress-medicine.com

5-0 out of 5 stars a godsend
I know my family is going to benefit so much from this book.It has what we are looking for -- all types of basic information, about the disease itself and practical caregiving information, presented in a very calming manner. We are in the tricky situation of the affected family member's refusal to go to a doctor, so we don't even have a professional as a guide through this situation....not yet anyway. It is great to have Mr. Kuhn's experience and depth of knowledge, in an easy-to-read and comprehensive guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars poorly organized, defensively written
I bought this book based on the number of favorable reviews and was disappointed. Poehlmann's tone is defensive, and the book offers more rhetoric than useful information. This is a fine book for those who are already convinced of the mycoplasma theory and the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy, but it for those who are seeking more information, it falls flat, chiefly because it fails to offer a cogent, rational uninflected basis for its views. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book of hope
This is volume 1 of a two-volume set.Buy them both.Just like the second volume, it is an essential "navigation" guide for patients with one of the deadliest cancers. The book is logically organized, gives all the necessary information and almost nothing is missing.I am brain cancer patient and I recommend this book. This book and a book by Ben Williams, Surviving "Terminal" Cancer should be on the bookshelf of every GBM patient. This book gave me hope and the strength to endure.Mine arrived with Dr. Zeltzer's dedication, "Knowledge is power".How true!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brain Tumors - a complex diagnoses made simple
This is a good book for anyone who needs to understand the complexity and diagnosis of a brain tumor. It will give you the facts to help you or a family member make intelligent decisions when faced with this medical diagnosis. My identical twin brother was diagnosed with a rapid growing tumor that was affecting his vision. We are both software engineers not doctors. We need facts with absolutes. Not probabilities. He was admitted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery. His wife and 1 year old daughter were at his side waiting for the operation. I found this book at the medical school bookstore. I thumbed through it and could not put it down. The book carefully explained in detail exactly what the medical staff was saying. It was not a solution for the emotions we were going through but at least I understood the complexity of the brain and impact of tumors. He had two major operations, including a craniotomy. Thankfully, he pulled through. That was a year ago. He will be on medicine from the tumor operation for the rest of his life. But he is alive. There are other books I might suggest for the emotional impact on a family, but this review is just for the understanding of the medical diagnosis. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a brain tumor I suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential
If you or a loved one are newly diagnosed with a brain tumor, this is the book you must read immediately and use as a reference throughout the process of dealing with the disease.I wish that it had been available when our daughter was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme early last year. With a disease of this complexity, you and your family will ultimately be responsible for coordinating treatment options, anticipating and managing side effects of medications, etc.To be an effective advocate you need to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, and this book is the place to start. The medical care that our daughter has received has been uniformly excellent, but a vigilent and informed caregiving team is a vital component in managing her disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read........
this book is chock full of information on the realities of dealing with alzheimer's disease and other memory impairment disorders.it is clearly written and uses examples of real-time situations to highlight situations that can arise and suggestions on how to deal with them.highly recommend it for care providers and others in the lives of those with memory impairment disorders.required reading for adult children to gain an appreciation for the pressures on the care provider(s) for a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 36 Hour Day
This is a really good book. I kept borrowing it from the library and kept getting fined for having it too long, so I thought I'd save myself time and trouble (and money, too) and buy it. I've come across alot of the same things that are mentioned in the book. This book is helpful to give the caregiver a different perspective on AD and it's nice to know that you're not alone in your struggles. It also reminds you that others have it worse than you do. I recommend this book for anyone who has elderly relatives, with the increased incidence of AD the chances are pretty good/bad that a relative will suffer from it. I think it's best to be prepared for the worst before it gets here. That way you'd have a start on what care would be required and how much you'll have to change your life to accomadate your aging relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Caregiver Should Read This Book
As the caregiver (daughter-in-law) of a 90 year old patient with dementia (vascular/multi-infact type), I found this book to be profoundly helpful in dealing with the day-to-day activities of caregiving. In short, I felt as if the authors had spent several weeks in our home and then written the book just for us!This is a MUST READ for any caregiver of a patient with Alzheimer's or other dementias. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher With Tourette Syndrome (TS)

5-0 out of 5 stars A true story of real courage
Brad Cohen's first hand account of how he became a teacher despite having Tourette's syndrome isn't great writing, but if you've ever known someone with Tourette's you know how amazing his story is. Happily most people today know what this disease is--as I was growing up with a brother who had it, no one did. If you haven't seen it, it's hard to imagine the noises, tics, cursing, and mental agony of living with this incurable problem. Cohen's book gives an intimate look at what it feels like to have your body taken over by urges that can't be controlled. He also sensitively portrays the distress and confusion of parents who try to deal with a problem for which modern medicine is almost useless. Again we see a situation where young children in the classroom can accept behaviors that the wider world can't tolerate, and Cohen's openness about his problem with these children is the secret of his success. One gets the sense Cohen's life will always be a struggle--although he has many friends there's no mention of a woman in his life, and gaining acceptance with new people is always going to be a risky business. But his courage is amazing. This book should be required reading for any child who doubts his worth as a person because of this terrible disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Front of the Class
This was the most amazing book I've ever read. My son was recently diagnosed, and I am so encouraged after reading Brad's book. He is reading it himself now. I am an elementary classroom assistant as well, and am grateful for the insight it provided me in working with students with various disabilities. I think reading this book should be a requirment for all teachers, and anyone working in the school setting, regardless of thier position. Thanks so much Brad! I was so sorry when the book ended, because I enjoyed reading it so much. I am purchasing it as a gift for a teacher as well. I will enjoy telling many people about this very special book. ... Editorial Review

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your currentstation in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled"Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsyoffice workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (whichmay reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knowshow to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion isthat most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it inslowly and then sleep on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read...some useful advice for the peak performer!
I picked up this book in a used bookstore, again instinctively, after having read Veronique's The Art of Doing Nothing & William Anthony's The Art of Napping. Although the book does not offer really cutting-edge stuff, I find it fascinating, as it offers some useful advice for the peak performer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Power Sleep by Maas
A main thesis of the work is that sleep is critical to peak
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a waste of money but not what I expected
I liked this book in a lot of ways, but when it ended, I was dissappointed. There is worthwhile information about sleep and interesting quotations from famous people about sleep but there seemed to be a lot of filler in this book. The book throws out many statistics but rarely explains how these stastics were obtained.I also thought the book contained too many horror stories about deaths related to people falling asleep while operating heavy machinery etc.,.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the front cover...
...lies a pleathora of easily accessible and directly useful information for the AD caregiver. What is not contained on the pages is supplied by weblinks and addresses for helpful groups and associations. The best advice often comes from those who have walked the walk and the author here is no exception. Kudos to the author for her bravery and much gratefulness for the gift to us all from the author and her mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to a collection of Alzheimer's books
Alzheimer's for Dummies does a good job in presenting the information relating to care giving and decision making for families of Alzheimer's patients. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
As an adult child of an Alzheimer's patient searching for as much information as I can about Alzheimer's disease, I find most books to have very little of the humor I desperately need to find to help me cope as the disease progresses. As a person who is living through the progressive loss of a loved one to this disease, I don't find this book to be insensitive or belittling, but refreshing and honest. I have shared this book with other family members and we have all found it helpful. ... Read more
