5-0 out of 5 stars MustRead
This book is a must read for anyone who has had a family member suffer a TBI (traumatic brain injury)and I wish those who don't deal with TBI's to read it so they have an understanding of those who do have one.I have a son who suffered one and even though his wasn't as severe as Rachel's, there were parts of Rachel's problems that he also dealt with.
5-0 out of 5 stars smartest memoir of the year
Atop all the courageous acts in this story, the final and most lasting one is Karen Brennan's commitment of her story to print. In her turmoil's depths, she attests to uncomfortable truths and confesses her impassioned dismay that love is sometimes mixed with guilt, that hope is a hairsbreadth from dread, that the cruelest and most unjust penalty is in another light a largesse with unending rewards. Most impressive is the revelatory presentation of an active mind (or perhaps two minds) learning, reformulating, performing. In her new role as caregiver researching her daughter's brain injury, Brennan confronts anew terms she had understood as fiction instructor and critical theorist: reading this, you'll come to know that what you appreciate in your favorite author or in your best friend's letters is your own innate complicity in a good act of perserveration or confabulation or dissociation. The gradual reunderstanding of memory and narrative is a thrill to experience.5-0 out of 5 stars A moving story of rebirth and courage
Karen Brennan's Being With Rachel ... tells of a family's changes when a 25-year-old daughter is gravely injured in a motorcycle accident. Her mother's account of her daughter's slow recovery, determination to walk again, and lasting brain injuries makes for a moving story of rebirth and courage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide for Caregiving
Dr. Miller and Dr. Bachrach have written a wonderful book.Dr. Miller was actually my daugther's ortho doctor until he took time off to help write this book. Dr. Bachrach is currently treating my daughter.I love the fact that they have made this book easy to understand and that it answers questions that you might never think to ask while you are in the clinic with your child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great introduction!
this book is an excellent introduction to the topic of m.s.it provides a nice summary of ms, diagnosis, cause, treatment, coping, employment issues, treatment / research.the glossary at the end is nice to look up basic questions.the suggested readings and resources at the end of the book are also very helpful.my neuorologist gave this to me to read at the time of diagnosis (after i had already read two dozen books on the topic).my wife found this book helpful.i think that this is an excellent book to purchase, used, if you can find it.there are some books available that provide much broader and deeper coverage, but this fills a niche and is well written. recommended as a good introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, informative read for those who need to know...
I am still undergoing the trauma of being diagnosed. I am in the situation I am sure many of those with MS all go through, some doctors positive I have MS, some not so sure, going through all the testing for it and have some come back positive and some come back negative (for now at least). It's a very frustrating position to be in, not just for the person directly involved, but for the family to be in.3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it. Too little info
I bought this book after reading the awesome reviews here. But it has disappointed me. Did not find anything new. Info is all too basic and you can find this by visiting couple of good web sites like WebMD. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone understands
Having only had RSD for 1 year, I found this book to be validating and extremely helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars RSD in real life
I am a kid who has rsd. Life with rsd is as close to hell as it gets. My doctor couldn't explain it, I couldn't explain it to my friends, I couldn't explain it to me: until I read this book. If you have rsd, kid or adult, I highly suggust READING THE BOOK! (It hurts a lot less than having a sympathedic block :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the first steps to understanding
I was injured on the job Jan. 2004 and since that time have been diagnosed and treated for RSDS. It has limited & possibly stopped my working life, however, being lost in a workman's compensation buracracy, I had to begin to learn myself how to talk to the doctor about RSDS. Not every patient reacts the same, not every patient is limited in what they can do - BUT - every patient will see their life change somewhat due to pain. This book was my beginning as far as reading material to helpme to understand RSDS. It is very informative, easy to read & understand and offers insight on taking control of your situation. It doesn't talk as much as I'd like about treatment plans and options. I have never taken so many drugs before and this book calmed my fears somewhat of becoming an addict. I will continue to learn about this pain syndrome because if I do not, I can't depend on the medical world to do it for me. A very good book to start off with if you have been diagnosed with RSDS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for patients and family members.
As the daughter of an 83 yr old mother who is developing more and more PD symptoms, I found this to be an invaluable resource. I have looked at other newer resources and this is by far, the one I prefer due to the informationfound within and its readability. My mother is now reading it for thethird or fourth time, highlighting as she goes.It has helped both of usunderstand and deal more efficiently with the many symptoms, as theydevelop.

5-0 out of 5 stars First good information I found on the Parkinson's condition
My aunt picked this up in a continuing education class she took to better understand this disease has been affecting her sister, my mother. It does an excellent job of presenting the evolution of our limited understandingof the causes of the Parkinson's condition. Case studies are used to expandon this basic understanding by illustrating the utility of the insights indealing with the disease in actual patients.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book to help you through the tough times!
My mother died of Alzheimer's in January of 2006. This book hepled my father, myself (the only child)and my wife through the whole process. It is realistic and tells one what to expect and how to handle each stage of this terminal illness. I highly recommend this book to the caretaker and his/her family to help them understand and deal with the realities of Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Because a relative of mine has AD, I spent some time at a large local bookstore (BN) looking for the right book. This is the one I picked.I think very highly of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent feedback from family members
As the Director of Social Work at a Retirement and Skilled NursingFacility, this is one of the books that I loan out to families. I have hadnothing but positive feedback from the families who have borrowed the book, and they have invariably told me that they found it easy to read, highlyinformative, and very helpful for them overall. In fact, I am visitingAmazon.com right now to order 2 more copies of the book at the residents'family members' request! -- Victoria T.Carey, MSW, LICSW ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A positive message of hope
Compiled andedited by Lisa Brenner, The Churkendoose Anthology: True Stories of Triumph over Neurological Dysfunction is a collection of uplifting testimonies offering a positive message of hope to individuals afflicted with neurodevelopment problems ranging from attention disorders, learning disabilities, Tourette's Syndrom, or an acquired brain injury, to Cerebral Palsy, sleep disorders, Vestibular Dysfunction, Down's Syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. True success stories of the HANDLE (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency) approach in helping young people and their parents. Enhanced with an informative commentary by Judith Bluestone, The Churkendoose Anthology is highly recommended as an engaging and encouraging read, especially for anyone having to cope with a neurological dysfunction.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Much Hope in This Book
The stories in this book give hope to us all. For more than a decade I have worked with adults and children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The usual treatments involve behavior modification and drug therapy.Little time is spent in observation and evaluation such as described by Judith Bluestone in this book. The Handle Institute's methods offer hope through its methods that have no reliance on drug therapy. This is a book for patients, family members and professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the best things are the simplest
Going through life as parent of a "special" child, one navigates a maze of physicians, experts, specialists, and amateur diagnosticians.Desperate for help, such parents try a range of treatments and tactics, sometimes destroying their families and their sanity in the process.Ms. Bluestone and HANDLE do not have a "magic bullet," but the simple and authentic wisdom in the HANDLE approach teaches us all that there really ARE honest and practical strategies to help individuals who don't fit any of the models in the medical literature. My son has benefitted greatly from the HANDLE precepts, and this book tells true stories of others whose lives have been forever changed.Ms. Bluestone's own story is an inspiration, and she brings to her work the unique empathy of one who has "been there" and found her way out.HANDLE respects individuality and eschews labels; the accounts of these HANDLE clients are compelling and dramatic.Perhaps the most important thing this book provides is hope, which is often in painfully short supply for "marginalized" people.I congratulate all these writers for recounting their journeys, and I think thousands of people can benefit from stepping into the Churkendoose shoes for a few hours.I recommend this book to those with open minds, tired spirits, and vital hearts. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dairy cow puzzle
This book has a good argument to a point, but in my opinion drops the ball on dairy cattle. These aniimals are not slaughtered at a relatively young age, as with beef cattle, but are kept in the breeding and milk production cycle as long as possible. This seems to be an ample length of time for symptoms of mad cow disease or other prion-type maladies to surface, but there seems to be no report that this has ever happened. The author mentions that not only are (or were) dairy cows more likely to be fed the "cannibalistic" protein supplements, but are in fact more likely to be made into hamburger, which he says exacerbates the spread of prionic diseases. So the excuse for lack of evidence falls short with dairy cattle, and there seems to be little to support his conclusions. His statistics are also questionable in that only 50,000 or so deaths are attributed to Alzheimer's in the US for any given year; given the average 8-year progression from first syptoms until death, and the 35 million or so persons over 65 years old, the report of cases and nursing home residents seems exaggerated.Only 2.5 million deaths occur annually in this country, a very stable number since 1990, and it seems unlikely that 500,000 of them are individuals with Alzheimer's but only a tenth that many are attributed to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it!
I have to admit I didn't know what to expect from this book....what kind of arguments would the author's use to connect modern meat processing/consumption to alzheimer's? My conclusion?....I feel the authors make excellent arguments for the case. The authors use an impressive amount of data to back up their assertions. While reading the book, doubts I may have had on an idea they were presenting were shattered after they backed up their ideas again and again with hard facts. If you're a skeptic like me, I think this book at the very least will make you question a few things that you may never have thought about before on the subject. Highly Recommended! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Should use his "great brain" to make this book better
I often wonder about the reviews here and question a 5 star rating. The author's relatives must have reviewed this book. I found this book very repetitive and not enlightening in the least. I gave up after about one third of the book. Don't waste your time.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Must Have a Great Brain Already...
This book was given as a present and I noticed it reflected the giver's fears about losing mental faculties in the natural, aging process. However, after reading the first few chapters and taking some time to skim over the rest, I found it told me nothing new about how to take care of the physical portion of my mind.It basically said to eat right, exercise, keep learning new things, get enough sleep, avoid over-doing alcohol and drugs, even prescription ones; all obvious (I hope) to anyone interested in keeping their wits about them.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Healthy Brain Opens Many Doors
I cannot agree more with this excellent book. A healthy brain, running at its full ability is the key to such a better, healthier and more successful life.

5-0 out of 5 stars You also need a GOOD Neurologist!
First this book isn't a Doctor (neurologist) so if you don't have one and suffer Migraines Please find a Doctor. I lucked out an found a Neurologist who also suffers Migraines. He was a God send. This Book refers back to what my Doctor told me. I am on medications but went from TWO "MIGRAINES" a week to one or less a month. When I was recommended this Neurologist by my Family Doctor, I had a Migraine for Three Weeks. My Life is now Liveable. This book helped confirm what my Neurologist said and in small bite sized pieces. The Doctor also prescribed of all thingsa Natural supplment that has not reduced the Severity but the Frequency. That is MIGRELIEF made by Quantum ([...]). What I eat seemed to make the Migraines worst. Preventing the onset of a Migraine started by me changing my Diet. The healthy things I ate were some of the triggers to onset. This book is helpful. Here is a site my Doctor uses ([...]) .I am not saying this book alone will heal anyone. Without a good Neurologist you might keep having Migraines. I am now at the point I can sell all my Migraine Books. I am living again and not hiding in a dark room waiting for the migraine to stop. Remenber a Banana that is ripe (Eatable and not bitter) can bring on headaches.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview & Guide
As a 20-year migraine sufferer, I must have 50 books on the subject including textbooks used in medical schools and costing $100 or more. This book gives a great overview and introduction to the person who is trying to find out where to start to take charge of their own medical treatment for Migraine and what questions to ask your Doc to see if he really knows what he is talking about. Most don't.This is a "First Step" book and not a book full of answers, but it will help you find more definitive information and save you wasting your time and money on a Doc who hasn't got a clue as to the discoveries about Migraine using Positive Emission Tomography since the late 1990's.Everything "taught" MDs about Migraine prior to about 1995 is just simply UNTRUE and this book will help you find sources for the latest material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too general, not enough information
I agree with the review that reads, "Save yourself the headache . . ."This book is far too general. If you read the brochures in your doctor's office and some informative information on the web, you already know more than you'll find here.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Forgetting Is the Worst Part...
This is evidence that some people can overcome the impossible. The dreaded calamity of not being able to remember in one of its worst forms hit Christin Boden at the age of 46 when she was diagnosed with progressive Althemizer's disease.Of course, she was hit hard and set out to learn all she could about this debilitating disease. The main thing is that she did not just crawl in a corner and give up.After all, she had three children to care for, so she became an advocate for people with dementia.
4-0 out of 5 stars Living With Dimentia:My Story of Living Positively with Dementia

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "user friendly" compendium of information, advice and resources for families having to deal with this disease
Now in a newly updated and expanded third edition, Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide For Families by clinical psychologist Rosalind C. Kalb (Director of the Professional Resource Center, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New York) is a thoroughly "user friendly" compendium of information, advice and resources for families having to deal with this debilitating and progressive disease. Of special note are two new chapter editions: "Planning for Possible Care Needs" and "Parenting A Child Or Teen with MS". Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide For Families draws upon specialists from the fields of neurology, general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychology, social work, law, and people with MS. Enhanced with a comprehensive list of readings and resource, this is the primary resource most especially recommended for non-specialist general readers having to deal with MS issues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hand this to your family and your spouse.
By addressing issues such as sex and emotions, Rosalind Kalb has made it possible for people to use this book as reference to discuss topics with their families and spouses that may be difficult.5-0 out of 5 stars very usefull information - especially for the newly diagnose

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know but don't want to know
This was by far the most comprehensive, detailed and informative book on Parkinson's disease I have read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's by deadline
Joel Havemann brings the journalist's practiced eye for detail, detachment and clarity of expression to the task of understanding, describing and coping with Parkinson's. He also allows his heart to speak and the result is a work that should be especially valuable to those who have themselves have recently received a Parkinson's diagnosis or who have a close relative or friend thus stationed.5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent look at PD
Other books about PD scared the heck out of me, but Havemann's sense of humor and indomitable spirit have changed my perspective. I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you Joel. The book is honest and straightforward. He describes what happens to a brain with PD so clearly that I finally understand it! ... Read more
