4-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Speak Alzheimers
Although I have only read the sections pertaining to the beginning stages of Alzheimers (since that is where we are now with my mother-in-law) this book has been extremely helpful already. It was actually recommended to me by a co-worker, who said she refers back to it frequently as her mother-in-law grows progressively worse. I highly recommend it as a starting point if you are just beginning this journey with someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great help
I really appreciat this book, the book is a real help for me to deal with my mother.

2-0 out of 5 stars To Much Fluff

5-0 out of 5 stars Self Help at it's best
I'm a physician and I have recommended this book and given it as a gift. It helped my own daughter. As a nation we are sleep deprived and for the subset of people who find it hard to fall asleep a natural method to deal with this problem is preferable to a drug solution with all it's side effects. If insomnia is your problem, this is the first stop to improved sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive program!
Jacobs does an excellent job of coherently outlining the causes of insomnia and barriers to sleep. He provides a concise outline of the physiology of sleep along with a nicely designed 6 week program to cure insomnia.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Sleep Savior
Extremely User Friendly and informative. It worked for me in less than six weeks. When I started reading the book I thought "this won't work for me."But it absolutely did.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need not be Dummies to benefit from this book
Finally! A book that gives a clear overview of pretty much every aspect related to autism spectrum disorder: from "classic autism" to Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. It covers diagnosis, medical and biochemical interventions, sensory issues, learning environments, education, social skills and relationships from pre-school through adulthood. And much more! How can one book address so many topics on one book? Even I'm dumbfounded it can be done...and I guess that's the point. It's Autism for Dummies, which means it gives the briefest most concise explanation. It is written in a clear and understandable manner than ANYONE can simply pick it up, scan through it and get a good handle on what autism is. This is an excellent reference book that every school and parent should have in their library to quickly thumb through for a quick explanation. I, as a parent of three children with ASD, have purchased SEVEN copies (so far!); one for myself to use a continual quick reference book, and 6 others for the professionals who work with my kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete and helpful guide...
Over the past three years since we began to suspect my grandson was autistic, I have accumulated a large library on the subject. Many of the books covered or advocated specific types of treatment, or information on school special education, or finances and autism, or possible causes, or personal success stories or even stories of acceptance when success didn't happen. This book covers them all, and more, and does it well.I'm getting another copy for my son and daughter-in-law, although by now they are experts, not dummies.. This is a really EXCELLENT contribution to the available literature on this increasingly common developmental condition.Don't miss it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a book to relate to
Michael's book is a fantastic account of his life leading up to and including his struggle with dealing with Parkinson's. As a person with a Parkinsonism who was diagnosed after Michael exposed his disease, I can say he truly made it easier for others to deal with this devastating blow. His hiding of the his disease is common of so many people who are diagnosed with PD at crucial points in their lives. An extremely good book about life rocky road, and for those with PD or any illness for that matter who are trying to create a somewhat normal existance for themselves and their families.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great story, very good read.
A friend gave this book to me. It was such a good read. I had no idea Michael was so sick, and had such a difficult life. While I did not respect ways he wasted his body by alcohol, drugs, and stupid habits before he found out, at a still very young age of mid-20s, about his Parkinson's disease, his remarkable change to a new man was a very good story. The anectodes from this book will stay with me, and it has a great message for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
I've been a fan of Michael J. Fox for many years and was sad to learn of his Parkinson's disease.I expected this book to be largely about the disease and Fox's coping with it.However, I was pleasantly surprised to read an honest account of all of the ways he had messed up his life before coming to terms with himself as well as with his disease.Although I don't like to read sad stories of drinking spinning out of control, Fox's matter-of-fact tone and willingness to take full responsibility for his actions was refreshing.I felt privileged to be allowed this glimpse into his life and his psyche, and I ended up liking him better after finishing the book than when I started. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr. Ahlskog for Caring Enough About Your Patients to Write this book!
Dr. Ahlskog shares his vast knowledge, expertise and caring bedside manner in this book.It is specifically written, in user friendly language, for families dealing with Partinson's. It answers any and all questions one might have concerning the disease and treatment of it.It is an absolute 'MUST HAVE' book for Parkison's Families..

5-0 out of 5 stars My Mom is taking this book to the doctor for discussion points
This book recommends using it to help discuss with your doctor the PD medications, which is exactly what my Mom is going to do today. When I saw this book recently it was what my Mom had been wishing for to help her figure out how to help my Dad, who is developing Parkinson's hallucinations and paranoia issues after many years of battling this disease. These are known problems from both the disease, as well as the medications to treat the illness. The book gave me renewed hope and optimism for helping my Dad be more himself again. Adjustments of the various prescribed medications can make a difference in life quality by balancing medication negative side effects with their benefits. My Mom is taking my Dad to the doctor today to discuss his medications and she taking this book with her. It's nice to know she has the Mayo clinic doctor, in essence, to take with her to discuss points with the local doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality program - and it really works!
As an adult autistic, I am always looking for ways to relax myself and to stimulate the parts of my brain that don't function as properly as they should.I have been playing a lot of ambient-type cds at home when I sleep or just hang around the house - I am very sensitive to sound from outside and have a lot of insomnia. Some of the cds I have are good, others are not so good - there are a lot of people making this kind of stuff and some of them seem to think you can just noodle around on a synthesizer over some ocean wave sounds and come up with a subliminal CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for parents
A good book for parents. In the social skills intervention we developed, I recommend a range of books for parents based on their accessibility and general sensitivity to parents needs. This book is one of the ones in that basket - there aren't many. I would also recommend reading Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative!
This book is practical and helpful. I have learned more about the areas I need to be targeting with my son. It has also increased my awareness of more of the things my son faces on a daily basis and how to approach them better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a dialogue aboutthe elephant in the living room
Thank God Mr. Gingold had the courage and generosity to break the silence and call a spade a spade. Reading my story, almost
5-0 out of 5 stars I do not feel so alone.
I thought my problems with MS were mostly physical and even those were invisible to most people. When I read this book by Jeffrey Gingold I felt sad and relieved at the same time. When I worked at the bank I had a similar experience to his.My customer just stood there as I look perplexed. I forgot how do do something that I had does hundreds of times. I just stood there and asked the person next to me if they could take over because I felt sick.I then disguised my memory problems with different strategies like he did. I have since retired fron the bank at the age of 39. I struggled to keep working with my diagnosis from the age of 31 but at 39 I had to change my priorities. I am going to try and get my family to read this so they can understand the struggle of this unpredictable disease. I highly recommend this book to someone with MS and medical personel that are working with people that have MS . Thank You Mr. Gingold!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, specific, & optimistic
I agree with the other reviewers that this book is parent-friendly, clear, and hopeful. My baby had seizures for two weeks after he was born and it took a while for me to understand what had happened and what to do next. I read two other books before finding "Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood," and this one was certainly the best. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining that there are many different kinds of seizure disorders and therefore different types of treatment. It dispels many of the myths out there about seizure disorders and says that many children grow out of it. Neurology has grown leaps and bounds in this field in the past 10-15, and it's important to be up-to-date, since many doctors have differing opinions about how to treat seizures. If you're at all confused (like I was), this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calmed, reassured, and prepared our family
What an excellent resource! My child had his first non-febrile tonic clonic seizure and I didn't know how to cope with the unexpectedness of a recurrent seizure. This book truly informs and reassures in parent-friendly terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
This book provided straightforward, invaluable information to our family when faced with our child's seizure disorder. It explains all the medical terms that our neurologist seemed to throw around without explanation (thereby scaring us!).It is optimistic and practical. It spans everything from how to deal with seizures, the pros and cons of different treatment, and how your child can live a full life. Most of all it put us at ease and educated us as to how to proceed with our child's medical treatment. It also helped guide us with what to tell others - the school, babysitters, grandparents.Definitely a must read for parents dealing with a child with seizures! ... The best resource you can find for this type diet.Actually, I do not consider it a diet but a way of life now.It is not hard to follow. All my questions were answered in this book, and some I did't even know I had.

2-0 out of 5 stars WASTE OF TIME
There are so many posts from people who obviously ignore the truth of fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism.Everyone seems to be showing all the information in this book as fact when in reality they have not even looked at REAL research on MEDLINE.I'm sure you have lost weight on a low-carbohydrate diet.Anytime you completely cut out a macronutrient you are going to be eating less and losing weight.IT'S ALL ABOUT CALORIES PEOPLE!A lot of the initial weight lost is water.I recommend going to mypyramid.gov.You can get a food plan listed in servings you need.Go to a dietition.LA weightloss is better. I rated this book a 2 because it simply lacks real information that you learn in a college nutrition class, but since people have lost weight...buy it if you like. You'll only gain it back.Lifetime weightloss can only be acheived by a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and informative
This book has helped me to better understand situations that a relative is going through from a near-fatal car accident. The different 'stages' and possible recovery difficulties are described in detail in this book: it tells about different patients and how they came through their recovery; it also explains about how their personalities can be affected by brain injury. It is a clearly written and easy to follow book, especially considering the fact that it deals with such a serious subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars learning about brain injury
This book is an excellent overview of the basic facts associated with brain injury. It clearly presents the nature of brain injury and the aftermath, both immediate and long term. It relates incidents of behavior and ways of coping with the difficulties during the recovery period. 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally! The Straight Scoop on TBI
I am thrilled at the selection available on this site andsuggest browsing through the "related subject" section forlots more books on Brain Injury...thank you Amazon.com!Prior to getting this book, everything I read dealt with MILD TBI...my sister sustained a very severe brain injury in an auto accident 11/7/99.My family ignorantly believed that her behavior post trauma was "real" and not a result of an injury, since my sister was a troubled person prior to the wreck. As we sat in the hospital, I read excerpts from this portable paperback aloud. Finally, my family was able to understand what I meant when I said that my sister was truly a "textbook case" of a brain injured person!Through three case studies involving a child, a young adult male, and a professional woman, the authors describe behaviors, feelings, and possible outcomes. It was comforting to know that my sister's deficits and her own lack of "insight" into her deficits were very common. My heart and prayers go out to all survivors and loved ones of victims of TBI...the road back is so hard that without resources like this book, it is close to impossible to navigate with any kind of serenity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A family guide
Having recently had a loved one who has suffered a devastating stroke, this book was so helpful in every aspect of what to expect on this very long journey to recovery. It was easy to read and to understand and I would highly recommend it to any family or caregiver who is going through this process with a loved one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stroke Recovery
Overall, a solid book, but could be a lot more comprehensive. It just doesnt cover all of the issues. (I was still left with questions). 5-0 out of 5 stars Our Doctor Recommended This Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Cut through the Theory and Go to the Heart of What Works
Julie Fast's unique perspective on bi-polar disorder comes from personal experience. In dealing with her own bi-polar disorder, she has personally had to do the challenging work to carve her own path through so she could live a productive life. Reading this book is a short-cut.It cuts through all the theory and goes to the heart of what actually works. If you need real assistance in dealing with the disorder yourself or if you need to know how to deal with a loved one who has bi-polar disorder, this book sends you life line. It lays out a step by step, practical approach that you can use as a handbook to guide you as you carve your own path through your individual challenge with bi-polar disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A plan for surviving and THRIVING
I was one of the lucky people who read an advance copy...and I was determined to be the first person to reveiw this amazing, life saving book on Amazon.Readers of Fast's and Preston's other book on Bipolar disorder (loving someone with bipolar) will be thrilled to finally get a detailed, step-by-step, super-in-depth plan that gently guides them to health. And for family members, this book will save relationships and marriages. The two things about this book that set it apart from anything else on the market that deals with bipolar disorder are 1)BIPOLAR CONVERSATIONS -- example: how do you talk to your teenage daughter/ mother/ spouse when they she's ready to kill herself, or manic, or sexually out of control?Fast and Preston, through their vast experiences and decades of dealing with this illness, show us what conversations work, and also HOW NOTto deal with those we love... and 2) sidebar stories from both bipolar patients and family members who have survived the devastating effects of this illness. They tell you what worked for them, where they were in their lives when they made the choice to take charge and get well.Especially powerful was the story written by Fast's brother.Actually, I found myself skipping ahead through the book and reading all the stories of the people who have this illness -- as well as the family member stories.Of course, I went back and read the whole book cover to cover.BUY THIS BOOK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and inspiring look at what it means to parent a disabled child
I've just listened to Mary Beth and Megan on the Diane Rehm Show and was very moved by their openness in describing their sons with Fragile X and their life with them, how they parent these sons, searched for the best education and medical care for them, and how they have found meaning and joy in their sons, despite their severe disabilities. Their book is an inspiration to all parents with disabled children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all Fragile X families!
This is the book that all of the families in the Fragile X community have been waiting to read. These letters between two women tell us the story of their personal griefs and triumphs; but they tell us so much more. The chapter called Dropping Bread Crumbs explains Fragile X for the layman more clearly than you've ever heard it explained before. We will all relate to the devastating news of the diagnosis in the chapter called Diagnosis and Dealing. And we will admire the courage of Kelly Randels' chapter on the hearbreak of facing an abortion. These women have the courage to tell us what we need to know; and the talent to keep you riveted throughout their journey in a world that has been defined for them by Fragile X.A extraordinary accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable, touching, educational, moving book
This is an incredible book.Mary Beth met Megan at a conference for parents of children with Fragile X, and decided to write to her.Mary Beth wrote to Megan, and in her letter, she quotes Margaret Mead:"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."And, indeed they have. They have also exchanged these simple, yet powerful letters. -- letters that talk about daily life, advice to each other, their family histories, the nature of Fragile X, the pain of Mother's Day, the nature of what is a home -- an endless array of interesting subjects. But these letters reveal so much more, namely, their courage, their disappointments, their tenacity, their truthfulness, their endless ability to love. It is a book that shows the human spirit at its best and is an inspiration to us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick and worthwhile read!
As a Social Worker working with family caregivers of people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Stroke, I found this book especially interesting. I learned a great deal, especially as related to how Alzheimer's and strokes interact to produce a more acute presentation.I also admired Dr. Snowdon's ability to stay connected with his study's participants as individuals first vs. seeing them only as study subjects. Lastly, it was very interesting to learn more about religious orders, a world which has alwaysseemed shrouded in mystery. This book is all at once a research, sociological and narrative read.I'm looking forward to finding out what else Dr. Snowdon and his team discover from this remarkable longitudinal study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Biography& The Science of Longevity Meet
Aging with Grace is an accessible and easy to read book packed with complex scientific and research data presented in understandable language. The author, David Snowdon, writes with a compassionate style that engages the reader draws them into the story of the Nun Study. This book is more than just a mere presentation of the results of the Nun Study and its impact on Alzheimer's research; it is biography and a truly human story. The lives of the sisters who participated in the study are made known to the reader and the reader becomes attached to them and the great legacy that they are leaving for humanity.Much can be learned on a human and spiritual level from the stories of the sister participants that goes beyond the scientific data and study results.Snowdon does and excellent job of weaving humanity with science resulting in the reader learning and engaging in science without becoming scientific.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for anyone at any age
Dr. Snowdon, who'd been conducting a multi-faceted study of a group of nuns for about 15 years at the time of the writing of this book (2001), presents a heart-warming account of his team's findings directed at the lay person.
