5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Practical
I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!
I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What Was I Thinking?
I'm really dependent on the reviews here at Amazon when I select a book, so I don't know why I ordered this book when there were no reviews.Perhaps I can save others some money by saying that there are far better books on knee pain than this one. I actually found more information by doing a Google search for "knee pain". The section on exercise, which in the one part of the book which should be most relevent, is no more than a few pages long. The author lists several exercises in brief, and there are no photos or illustrations to show the exercises.Even stranger, there are NO stretches.I find it hard to understand how this book even came to be published. I wish that I'd been able to go to a bookstore to compare books and select the one that best met my needs, but thankfully I ordered "Knee Pain"by John Garrett, MD, at the same time that I ordered "The Knee Sourcebook" . It has two full chapters on exercises with photos, shows stretches, and has a full variety of exercises to strengthen all the muscles surrounding and supporting the knee. ... Read more

Co-authored by medical doctors Freeman Miller and Steven Bachrach, Cerebral Palsy: A Complete Guide For Caregiving, 2nd Edition is a `must' for any family struggling with CP care: it provides parents with answers ranging form understanding areas of involvement and basic care issues to understanding medical terminology commonly used. Dr. Miller and Dr. Bachrach have written a wonderful book.Dr. Miller was actually my daugther's ortho doctor until he took time off to help write this book. Dr. Bachrach is currently treating my daughter.I love the fact that they have made this book easy to understand and that it answers questions that you might never think to ask while you are in the clinic with your child. ... This is largely a collection of URL links. The author is inconsistent in explaining what is available at each site.Sometimes there is a lot of explanation and at other times none.Putting the term "spinal stenosis" in Google, Yahoo! or other widely used search engines can lead to equal, if not better results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone understands
Having only had RSD for 1 year, I found this book to be validating and extremely helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars RSD in real life
I am a kid who has rsd. Life with rsd is as close to hell as it gets. My doctor couldn't explain it, I couldn't explain it to my friends, I couldn't explain it to me: until I read this book. If you have rsd, kid or adult, I highly suggust READING THE BOOK! (It hurts a lot less than having a sympathedic block :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the first steps to understanding
I was injured on the job Jan. 2004 and since that time have been diagnosed and treated for RSDS. It has limited & possibly stopped my working life, however, being lost in a workman's compensation buracracy, I had to begin to learn myself how to talk to the doctor about RSDS. Not every patient reacts the same, not every patient is limited in what they can do - BUT - every patient will see their life change somewhat due to pain. This book was my beginning as far as reading material to helpme to understand RSDS. It is very informative, easy to read & understand and offers insight on taking control of your situation. It doesn't talk as much as I'd like about treatment plans and options. I have never taken so many drugs before and this book calmed my fears somewhat of becoming an addict. I will continue to learn about this pain syndrome because if I do not, I can't depend on the medical world to do it for me. A very good book to start off with if you have been diagnosed with RSDS. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
While looking at this book it became reality to me that the MindBodySpirit connection is actually lost in it's content. It becomes a Mind experience with many different antidepressant issues involved. There are treatments that I have experienced in this book that are supposed to help that do nothing but further frustrate the complex problems of Fibromyalgia. Also, the guaifenesen treatment may have no reason to work, and it may only show as a placebo effect in certain people during testing, but for those of us who try it and find that it does something to us that nothing in the past has even begun to do it is a life saver. Chronic Fatigue is a giant issue with this illness and guaifenesin treatment has helped me so much in this area that I would never give it up. I also see that there are MindBodySpirit issues with the illness of fibromyalgia, depression coming and going at will and especially during stress related situations, but it is something way too complex to even begin to work out in this book given the minute amount of space alloted each topic.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I feel I have wasted good money on this one. I am a strong believer in mind-body medicine, but the bits and pieces of boring information in primer form were a real turn off.1-0 out of 5 stars There are many other better choices out there
This book, while telling SOME of the truth about fibromyalgia, was co-written by Edwin Season, who works as an "independent medical examiner" for the Ohio State Teacher Retirement System. That means it is his job to find reasons to deny disability to those who need it, thereby saving the retirement system money. (This retirement system is being investigated for misuse of funds.) I am one of their victims, my illness being labeled as "Somatization Disorder" despite the mounds of objective medical evidence of brain injury, etc. I provided. Thanks to Season, I now struggle to work just 20 hours per week and I cannot keep up on bills. All because he thinks that illnesses like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are all in the mind. He needs to look at the evidence - and, a little compassion wouldn't hurt either. (Even the title of this book is contradictory - if you have widespread pain and fatigue, you're NOT healthy!) I'm now destroyed financially with little means of support. Thanks for nothing, Season. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ok on facts, light on sense
The medical aspects are dealt with fairly accessibly, but troubles me is the author's tone throughout the book - patronising, and his tendency to make statements that belie an extraordinary ignorance of human beings. What kind of weirdo would write a sentence like "....of course, the death of a child is always tragic, even when it is expected"?

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I'm reading it
I was introduced to this book by my fiance (now my husband), who bought it for himself - to read and understand what I'm going through and to better help me. He urged me to read it, too, but I did not want to learn anything about it, mostly because much of what I've read before contained so much 'doom and gloom'.

When I started reading this book, I began to cry. I saw myself over and over again. And it is so comforting to know I am not the only person feeling this way, hurting this much. I am not quite finished yet, but so far I have learned so much I didn't know and also found suggestions for coping I hadn't encountered. Now if someone could only come up with a cure!

1-0 out of 5 stars Angry and Disappointed
My hope when I bought this book was that I would find inside it encouragement and helpful advice. The author presents a very biased sample of women who I do not believe are representative of the greater population of people with fibromyalgia. Most (thought not all) of the women in this book identify themselves as sick and disabled, have stopped working and many come off as feeling sorry for themselves.I believe one can have a medical condition without being "sick" all the time.I also think that a lot of the people who are disabled by FM also have other diseases and those are likely more resposible for the disability than the FM alone. The general information about the syndrome contained in this book is available elsewhere and indeed is not the purpose of the book, but the women's stories did not provide me with the kind of information and support I was looking for.For example, 50 women listing all the medications they take or have tried tells me nothing. And I felt I was being more encouraged to go on disability after reading this book than I did to go on with my life. This condition is painful, annoying and distracting but it is not a death sentence. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars William Glasser - More Ignorance on Fibromyalgia
William Glasser is a psychiatrist--strike one.Psychiatrists are still stuck on the notion that fibromyalgia an illness that is psychologically caused and continued and nothing in what I've read about his take on fibromyalgia tells me he is any different.Strike two is the statement that there is no pathology, i.e. physical abnormalities with fibromyalgia. On the contrary, there are numerous studies going on at numerous prestigious universities by numerous knowledgeable researchers that are discovering very definite physical, biochemical abnormalities in fibromyalgia patients that are not psychologically caused.Strike three--the incidence of psychological difficulties (depression, anxiety, etc.) is approximately the same in the fibromyalgia population as in the general population. If the depression rate is any higher, it's because of [people] like Glasser and the members of the medical profession who set themselves up as "experts" on the subject of fibromyalgia when they know NOTHING.It's a never ending battle for fibro patients...

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can change your life to a better life.
Dr. Glasser has made his book on fibromyalgia, tell his story of what he now calls "choice theory", in a story format. What he tells does not just apply to fibromyalgia, it applies to most of our life challenges. This is a short book, that tells all anyone really needs to have a continuously improving life. There is a lot to be gained from telling how choice theory works by using these realistic cases. Then we can identify with the challenges faced by himself and the other people in his book.Read more
