5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there.
I've been very disappointed in the quality of books out on the market about inflammation disesases such as RA. This is the only one I would recommend. It has all the info you need, neatly laid out with great, easy-to-read graphics. Definately 5 stars! Also look for their book on Alternative Therapies. Buy extra copies for your family/friends so they understand what you're going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must
If you or a family member or a close friend has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is the book to read. It explains the various aspects of the disease, what one can expect to happen, how to cope with the pain and how to organize your life in order to minimize the stress the disease can cause. The book does not candy-coat the disease, but does show how it can be managed. It explains the different drugs that are available to help and it explains their side-effects, also. There are helpful hints to diet and exercise, as well. I found this to be a very important book for me because it gave me the ground-work for dialog with my doctor. I am glad I found this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gave Me My Life Back!
At the time this book came into my hands, I was 19 years old and in excruciating all-over joint pain from the rheumatoid arthritis I'd had since aged nine. I was bed-ridden at the time and hardly wanting to eat but I started the diet recommended in the book and within three weeks I was pain free and have remained so. I went on to become a journalist and mother. I only wish that I had had this book as a resource when I was nine and those awful years of pain and joint damage could have been avoided. I am totally grateful to the author of this book and highly recommend it to those searching for arthritis self-help knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Starch = Pain Free
After living with debilitating pain for so many years I am very pleased with the results after having removed starch from my diet. I used to be in constant pain and barely able to walk (despite strong medication), whilst now I can actually run again :-).. and no more need for the pain killers / NSAID's [woohoo].
5-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous scientific validity
As an ank spon sufferer, low starch diets are a tremendous help ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone who even suspects fibro!
This book has proven stratagies. I am in at least 50% less pain because of this book. Simple things that you normally wouldn't think of are in this book that can help you! This should be in everyone's book case who has this terrible affliction. There is no definate cure, but you can get your lifeback and this book can help! Great resources, drugs, vitamins, etc.. Greatsuggestions. I was even skeptical at first, but it worked for me and Ithink it will for you if you give it a chance.. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maximum help, low level comprehension

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing I don't know about already.
This book was not helpful at all to me.I basically have a good working knowledge about fibromyalgia and this book offered no new helpful advice; in fact, it seems to be very outdated. The author basically speaks about her own actual experience.I would try another book rather than this one, probably a book written in 2005.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Relief is just that, simple
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about a year and a half ago and have read everything I can get my hands on.With as debilitating as this syndrome is, I refuse to let it stop me and after almost a year of medication decided that I dont want to spend the rest of my life medicated. So, I have opted to treat my FMS by eating healthy, exercising and other alternative treatments (like acupunture).I bought this book thinking it would provide me with some additional guidances about exercise and movement. For me, the book was too simple.I already know everything it suggests. However, I do think that it could be something positive for those who are not moving or for loved ones of FMS sufferers, like my boyfriend who found the book quite informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I was concerned based on the review below that this book would disappoint me, but every concern vanished after reading it. Ms. Bigelow is motivating about movement, but does advocate rest. She does describe FMS as a neuro-endocrine suggestion and there are photographs of stretches, along with very specific exercise recommendations. A trustworthy, useful, refreshing reference! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I bought this book prior to hip surgery. It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises.I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars alternative to hip replacement surgery
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge"prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability.A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to this disease
I was diagnosed with RA in December and picked this book up soon after. It gives lots of information about the course of the disease, medications, exercises and diet.I've loaned it to family members and reference it whenever I have a question about what my body is doing. The only drawback is that medications are developing at such a fast rate, that the book is already a bit outdated after only 3 years. However, it is still a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a work of superb medical scholarship
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis by Tammi L. Shlotzhauer (Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Practicing Rheumatologist at Rheumatology Associates of Rochester) and James L. McGuire (Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts) is a large print compendium of the latest information on Rheumatoid Arthritis concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and daily life (from special diets to possible alternative therapies and more) with this troublesome and painful disease. Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis informatively presents its facts in terms and text ideal for the non-specialist general reader, yet without glossing over specific issues, problems, medicines, or other challenges facing rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Simply put -- this is a work of superb medical scholarship and Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis should be on the shelves and available to the patrons of every community library system in this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A practioner speaks the truth
This was a very insightful and practical guide to not only treating this disease, but many others as well.Doctors are not mind readers, nor are they infallible. They need to have patients cooperate with them, and provide them with as much insightful information as possible in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis.Patients should not rely on the doctor to have all the answers, and frequently, will not, if there is meaningful information left from his or her view. This book reminds us all that we are responsible for our own health, and the doctor is there to help us along that path only if we allow them.It is up to each of us, as patients, to be forthright, and open with our problems, concerns, and illnesses. We must forever be mindful that today's health system does not encourage lengthy visits with physicians; hence, we should come prepared, equiped, and aware of our bodies and how our health is being impacted by whatever our conditions may be.This book gently but firmly reminds us of our responsibilities to take charge of our own bodies and of our interrelationships with our doctors.Bravo on a book well done, indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is facing the challenges of a Sjogren's diagnosis. The authors address both the newly diagnosed patient and those who have been coping with this chronic illness for many years.Their advice on choosing a doctor and forming a partnership with her is wonderful and, I believe, critical to the physical and emotional well being of the chronically ill patient.I hope physicians will read the book. The authors' insights into the frustrations of treating patients with incurable but manageable illnesses are lessons for both patients and physicians.5-0 out of 5 stars Fair and balanced reporting: patient and doc collaborate
This book is a very good example of how patient and doctor can and must collaborate; in this case on a book about a specific disorder, but in a bigger sense, too: patients and doctors must learn to work together to solve complex, tricky medical conditions caused by autoimmunity, to come up with customized treatment packages which enhance quality of life without threatening it. ... This is a book from someone who has traveled the route with his wife to learn about scleroderma and to obtain quality medical care and necessary assistance. Many avenues they traveled are shared in detail. The author clearly wrote this book in an aim to assist others taking the same path he, his wife and his family were forced to endure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I got this book for my mother who was diagnosed with scleroderma 5 months ago. It answered questions that we hadn't even thought of yet. The chapters on finding the right doctor and getting information on the Internet were the best. This is a great resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless except for U.S. patients
I found this book completely useless, although I suppose it may be helpful to U.S. patients. It seemed to me to be a catharsis for the writer, nothing else. As a patient suffering from scleroderma, I wasted my money, and the book ended up in the garbage after I had looked through it. I think it should be made clear that this is not helpful to patients or their families living outside the U.S. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A family physician reviews the book for a lay audience
"Overcoming Arthritis" is an excellent book for the lay person. It discusses the common types of arthritis, some of the origins of arthritis, and reviews treatments for arthritis. It also describes some of the self-care that people with arthritis can use to minimize the disease process itself and to make their lives more comfortable. The most important part of the book, however, is Dr. Lam's introduction of his "Tai Chi for Arthritis" program. He describes in photos and in words the twelve steps in the form that has been shown to decrease pain and stiffness in people with arthritis and to increase strength and flexibility and a sense of well-being in this same population. The photos are excellent and precisely demonstrate each of the twelve movements. From this book, a person could begin to practice Tai Chi on their own.He also suggests other places where a person might get more information about dealing with arthritis in a pro-active, positive way.5-0 out of 5 stars overcoming arthritis?!
