5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teens!
As a teen with scoliosis, I found this book extremly helpful from the start. It told me everything I needed to know, even through the major sugery, which I had to have. I would reccomend this book to anyone with scoliosis, especially teens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I have scoliosis and have gone through bracing and surgery. This book gave me a better understanding about the disorder and it's treatment options. The first-hand accounts provide a personal face, reminding therest of us we're not alone! Some of the material about surgery and bracingis outdated, but it's a good book for anyone facing scoliosis treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Information is dated
Based on other books and research on the web, I found the information to be rather dated. However, the personal stories of people coping with scoliosis are helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book to have for scoliosis patients
While it doesn't have as many case studies/pictures/stories as Scoliosis: Ascending the curve, I find the information to be a lot more in depth.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Scoliosis Sourcebook by Michael Neuwirth, M.D.
I have scoliosis and just recently had A/P spinal fusion at the age of 50.I searched everywhere and bought severals books before I chose a doctor and had the surgery.I found this book to be the best and most helpful. It is critical for patients to understand and expect what this surgery means.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference for Anyone Researching Scoliosis
Michael Neuwirth has done an excellent job of covering just about everything patients and their caretakers need to know about scoliosis and its treatment.Although there were a few times where I noted Dr. Neuwirth's treatment is different than the treatment received in this part of the country, in general, his wisdom and advise is right on.I'm grateful for such a thorough text to which I can refer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Disease Specific Information Easily understood by Patients
Some books about scleroderma are clearly written with the medical community in mind and are way to technical for the average person. This book is directed to the average person and wrote in a way that can be easily understood by those who do not have medical experience. I highly recommend this book to every person with scleroderma and to ever person that is interested in learning the facts about this disease. Get your copy today!

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and clearly written
As a nurse practitioner, I felt that the info in this book was very comprehensive... I also felt that the language was well written in commonly-used descriptive terms, so that any lay person could also understand the content.Very helpful info and practical advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the newly diagnosed.
Before this book my husband and I felt lost trying to find answers. It answered all of our questions from what lab work needed to be done to why I might be having certain symtoms.I even recommended this to my Docter to tell his other patients about. Editorial Review

The word "cure" in the title is a bit misleading, but this book certainly makes a persuasive argument in favor of treating osteoarthritis with two common nutritional supplements--glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates--and following a program emphasizing better nutrition and exercise. The supplements are commonly used in Europe and Asia, where they've been tested in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (the gold standard for medical research). They haven't been thoroughly tested in the United States, the authors contend, because drug companies can't patent the supplements and thus won't fund the research. The book also contains a chapter detailing a seven-step arthritis-prevention program. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main "cure" and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.)
5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This was followed by Maximizing the Arthritis Cure (1998) which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle.Written by three differentlaureled academics and obviously put together by committee, this first bookwas a big time best seller and demanded a sequel. Most of the diet advicewas like something I had read twenty years ago.The exercise programditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference.Infact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use ofthese supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis.People bought thebook in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also boughtthe book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine andchondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplementswithout the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or isit just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? Iwas a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, andwe all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of ascoundrel." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Number One Choice on the Suject
The best book I've found on Fibromyalgia. Who better to write on fm than a medical doctor who both specializes in fm and actually has the disease (yes, disease) himself? As a new fm patient, I found this book to be the most comprehensive, medically sound, and practical for helping to diagnose and treat fm. It even helped with my diagnosis. Another good source is "Living Well with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia" by Mary Shomon (another patient, but not a medical doctor; however, her book seems incredibly well researched. How did she find the energy?) A warning, "Fibromyalgia for Dummies" is an imcomplete piece of fluff, a waste of paper. (See my scathing review of it.) I agree with the reviews below, "Inside Fibromyaligia" is the first choice for fm patients. Thank you Mark Pellegrino.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Easy to Read
This book helped me understand Fibromyalgia. It is well written and broken down into easy to understand chapters. If you are new to Fibromyalgia this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Inside Fibroy... is an awesome book that I highly recommend reading and following to anyone who suffers from fibro.I do not however recommend that anyone actually track Dr. Pellegrino down in Ohio to see him personally. It is not worth the $200 which he demands up front. You can get more out of the book.He is more concerned with the bottom line than helping his patients especailly those who travel from out of town to see him.Unlike what he says in his book he will not write a detailed letter to employers to help them understand fibro or to help the fibro patient obtain restrictions or job modifications.I would recommend showing the book to your employer. The book is very helpful, in person the doctor is not. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Gave Me Some Great Ideas
This book gave me the great idea to work/read while standing up - the top of my dresser is just the right height for that & I'm surprised at how easy and comfortable it is.The premise of the book is that exercise can be incorporated into your everyday routine, once you develop certain habits, and does not have to involve a big disruptive trip to the gym.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Posture Prescription: Top notch book!
Very easy read for a non-fiction book and very good information. It made me very conscious of how my posture was creating my back problems. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did the trick for me
Everybody probably has different needs but this book absolutely did it for me.I had neck and upper back pain for 2 and a half years and it was so bad I took ibuprofen every single day for that period and was worried I was going to suffer long-term medication consequences.I saw two chiropractors and a top notch physical therapist, all of whom, combined, were only able to make a small difference in the management of the pain.I started doing the exercises in this book in August of 2004 and by September the pain was about 10% of what it used to be.It's now January 2005 and I have occassional flare-ups, most of which can be managed through a brief run-through of the exercises. After taking ibuprofen every day for 2 and half years straight, I am happy to report that in the past five months I have taken it about 5 or 6 times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information from a physician/patient
If you are like millions of other women who have been diagnosed with low bone density, DON'T PANIC!I bought this book after a bone density scan; my physician informed me that I have spinal osteopenia and gave me some fairly alarming warnings about possibly needing to be on medication (though, to his credit, he suggested I obtain a second opinion).I immediately ordered this book and "The Myth of Osteoporosis" (also recommended) and am exceedingly glad I did. This book offers a comprehensive overview of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, with much useful information that, as the title suggests, my doctor never provided.I learned that while bone density is a serious issue for older women, and should not be trivialized, the medical profession and pharmaceutical companies have converted what is essentially a normal state of aging into a disease.Women concerned about bone density should thoroughly inform themselves about how bone density scans are interpreted (this is a controversial area) and about all the medical and nonmedical options available to them.Equally important, they should educate their daughters, because the first few decades of life is the prime time for building healthy bone. For many women, the best course of action will simply to be to eat right, get plenty of exercise, and stop worrying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information
This book has much information about osteoporsis and what it means to your future. Along with this book, I strongly suggest reading another book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause - The Breakthrough Book on NATURAL Progestrone".The Osteoporsis book is extremely informatative about all aspects of the disease, osteoporsis, while the Progestrone book is full of informatin to aid you to become involved with your doctor in setting a course of action against osteoporsis. It is wonderful in explaning the differences between natural and man-made hormones. It gives information on REVERSING osteoporsis. Both books are a must read for anyone who has osteoporsis or is headed in that direction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Lyme Disease
Overall it is very informative. However, it was lacking in areas such as how to manage low blood pressure which is found in 70% of chronic fatigue patients. In fact, the tilt test which is used by the Social Security Administration (for disability claims)as a marker for the syndrome is never mentioned (my blood pressure dropped to 56/33 during this test). Dr. Cheney and Dr. Bell as well as other leading doctors/researchers who were/are the pioneers in identifying and treating CFS/FMS have protocols for low bp which would be helpful to CFS patients. There is little attention paid to the real leaders in this field. Although Teitelbaum, Chaitow, and Lapp were mentioned, other leaders were forgotten. There is serious research being done (and findings) at the University of Oregon and University of Miami that was totally neglected. In place of referencing these leading doctors, physicians like Dr. Haimes are referenced who is skilled with hgh therapy for anti-aging but who is not very knowledgeable with CFS or Fibromylagia nor does he claim to specialize in CFS/FMS treatments (the two syndromes I suffer with and subjects of this book). So readers have to take care not to use these physician references in the book as referrals to doctors who subscribe to the protocols/insights of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably thorough and right on the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent person's guide to dealing with fibromyalgia
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (meeting chronic fatigue syndrome criteria as well) several years ago, and I've read many books on the subject. This one is written for the intelligent lay person or healthcare practitioner; it's fairly easy to read and contains loads of useful information on diagnosing and treating fibromyalgia.I refer to it often for self-treatment and have ordered copies for several members of my healthcare team. The emphasis here is on treatments that have actually worked for patients, not on speculative causes and effects.Included are questionnaires on allergies, hyperventilation, candida, thyroid, food intolerances, anxiety, and low blood sugar, along with specific suggestions for treating these problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource
Here is a user-friendly guide to treating a wide range of health problems homeopathically.Besides arthritis, it is a book to go to for spine, knee, hip, foot or ankle problems, as well as headaches. Also presents alternatives for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.Extremely clear and well-organized, it offers the reader the benefit of a great deal of experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars an invaluable resource
I concur with the previous reviewer. I'm a chiropractor with some formal training in homeopathy and before purchasing this book I was pretty much at a loss as to how to integrate acute homeopathy into my practice. This book changed everything. I now have a pharmacy of over 100 remedies that I use on a regular basis. I now have a foundation onto which I can add knowledge gained from practical experience. But be forwarned: This book will help out a great deal with acute prescribing, but don't think that you will be able to tackle constitutional levels of healing without additional training and practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind homeopathic healing guide.
Through a meticulous labor of love, Asa has produced a virtual musculoskeletal, textbook for chiropractors and physicians who are pursuing a course of natural health care for their patients. The heart of his book, the first of its kind, addresses the homeopathic solutions for musculoskeletal complaints commonly seen in our offices and commonly experienced by many people in the course of their lives. As Asa focuses our attention on the musculoskeletal keynotes and affinities of the homeopathic materia medica, easy to read illustrations and charts help us reach the homeopathic cure, (or similimum) for many acute and chronic conditions.Asa1s book has the potential to relieve much human suffering. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for students, not so much for patients
As an acupuncture and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) student, I find that this book gives an absolutely wonderful overview of fibromyalgia in its various forms. It goes over the patterns very clearly, and because the patterns come with such a concrete example (ie, fibromialgia), it really helps learn the patterns.1-0 out of 5 stars Long-Time Fribromyalgic
Though this book offers an array of alternatives to treat fibromyalgia, sufferers must beware. Fibromyalgia is an incurable disorder. First of all, unless you are familiar with Chinese medicine, you may feel like your reading Chinese. The remedies offered by this book are difficult to do alone, you will need the knowledge of someone trained in Chinese medicinal practices. For the sake of toxicity, you will at least need an herbologist of Vita-Nutritionist. The greatest flaw with this book is the writer's presumption that all those who have fibromyalgia have suffer in the same way. He offers therapies for few symptoms, but ignores the vast number of other problems that are associated with fibromyalgia. The author also ignores the group of people who suffer with fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, or chronic fatigue syndrome, all at once. I should know, I'm 29 and have suffered with fibromyalgia for 14 years already. I also suffer from the chronic pain of myofascial pain syndrome and chronic fatigue. For example, for someone like me, acupuncture doesn't work, it only amplifies the pain; but acupressure or Shiatsu works wonders. I recommend for those of you out there interested in learning about fibromyalgia, look for the The Fibromyalgia Network online, or books by Devin J. Starlanyl, M.D., she is a doctor with fibromyalgia/myofascial pain complex; she offers wonderful insight into these incurable condition. Another physician to look into is Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome and offers more insight into all three disorders and their co-existing symptoms. Knowledge is your greatest ally. You must educate yourself, and sometimes even your doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book, not only for patients.
Bob Flaws focuses the view on fibromyalgia patients. It's very interesting not only for patients, but also for practitioners. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book from a sufferer
This book is written by Sharon Moore, who suffered from SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythomatus or simply called Lupus) and who was told that it is an autoimmune disorder and she may not recover from it. She did recover from it by studying alternative approaches to health, which she describes well in this book. Her story is spread over 13 chapters and an epilogue. She talks of the effect of liver on health, diet and health, nutritional supplements, herbs, beneficial fats and oils, toxins in food, problems from toxins in dental work, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mind-Body Therapies, Caring for Your Spirit and interestingly the last chapter, "How to Begin" a good road map. The epilogue is a good graphic portrayal of her recovery from a debilitating illness.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not really a lupus book
Reader beware. Except for the second chapter ("What is Lupus?"), this book isn't really about lupus. It is, rather, a somewhat haphazard introduction to naturopathic practices by a lupus sufferer who happens to be a competent writer.5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Valuable Book, Whether Suffering from Lupus or Not.
Sharon Moore's book combines many valuable attributes.First, it tells a fascinating story of the author's search to discover the nature of her frightening illness.I could sense that, in spite of being so ill, she was determined to discover the most effective therapies to bring the disease under control. In the process, she has done an enormous amount of research that she shares with her readers.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT what I expected
In 1996, fibromyalgia researcher, I. Jon Russell and Jenny A. Fransen put together the Fibromyalgia Help Book.Their book ex-plained--as much as possible--an illness that has no known cause and therefore no known treatment.5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information, I have this illness, great book!
I wrote the book -beyond the dark cloud, road to recovery from chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction.I know how much work it takes to write a book,I do feel that DR. Goldenberg, went beyond just writing this book, he also feels for any one who has this devastating illnes and really wants to help others.By reading this fine book,I did feel I know DR. Goldenberg, because he also puts his heart into it.Thank you DR. Goldenberg for writing this wonderful book.Thea Schlosser, author, founder of chronic fatigue, and immune dysfunction media awarness, board member of the anty aging network, staffwriter for the ,international councel for freedom of health.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" resource on Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia, the most recent book by the author Dr. Don Goldenberg, an internationally renowned medical expert and researcher in the field, is an absolute "must read" for patient, families, and friends of people with fibromyalgia.Equally important, it is a valuable resource for physicians who work in this field as well as family doctors, primary care physicians and specialists who will all be educated by this sophisticated guide to understanding, and caring for people with fibromyalgia.I found it balanced, well referenced, personally touching, informative, and realistically hopeful.Dr. Goldenberg's sections on "Myths and Truths" at the end of each chapter highlight the most important information in a succinct and relevant format. The clinical vignettes allow the reader, patient and physician to gain insight into the many manifestations of fibromyalgia and related syndromes. Overall, I would give the book the highest rating of ***** (5 stars). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe a little too basic
Many FM patients (usually those with a more mild form) have found that they can manage their FM through the use of supplements. Elrod gives a lot of good suggestions, but not a lot of information on how the different supplements can help. This is a good resource book, but should be used in light of a doctor's care and current research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the body of knowledge!!
I have suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fatique syndrome since 1992.When I was diagnosed there was virtually no information available!Thankfully there are some caring souls out there who have lent their expertise to this condition that is looked down on by so many professionals. As a stand-alone this pamphlet gives a fair background to the condition in addition to the invaluable information regarding the supplements but its strength lies in its addition to the cummulative body of information that is being built.Another reviewer mentioned that one would have to take pills all day in order to use all the suggested supplements..... from my reading of the pamphlet that was never intended! These are suggestions and each individual needs to find the right balance of supplements and in the quantity that works for that individual. If you are suffering from this condition my thoughts and prayers are with you!Don't give up and don't let people tell you this is all in your head!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Panning of Supplements for Fibromyalgia
I rated this as a "1" based on my level of knowledge. For a neophyte, perhaps it could be rated as high as a "2".There aren't many supplements which Elrod didn't include in this review...EVERY supplement is important to him (and I don't disagree). However, one would have to take pills ALL DAY to get all his recommendations ingested. He doesn't give any ideas of relative importance, nor does he suggest any amount which might be necessary for each supplement. Not very helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A TRUE GOD SEND
This is one THE best books I have ever read about Lupus. As a Lupus sufferer, it is important to know aspects of this illnesses. This book goes from the diagnostic phaze to the definition of and the treatment of Lupus. It is very detailed and concise in its approach. Doctor Wallace must be one heck of a rheumatologist because he took very complex subject matter and made it coherent for the average American. This book is filled with information on various treatments for Lupus, a prolifera of testing procedures and an explanation of co exsisting autoimmune diseases. Any individual with Lupus, their families, physicians and social workers should have this truly well constructed text!
5-0 out of 5 stars A God Send
This book is one of the best out there on Lupus.Mr. Wallace disects the disease into many parts because Lupus had many frustrating facets to it.After reading this book, I am going to talk to my doctor who does not think that I have Lupus, because I don't fit neatly into a box.I can't wait to tell this doctor that my last blood test showed the anitphospholipid levels were extremely high.I noticed it, he didn't.Thank you Mr. Wallace for naming the symptoms, and the cause of it.My "gut feeling" was right.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have Lupus
I have Lupus and this book is definitely informative to me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone..... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazing they all love the other books by THE SAME AUTHOR
I find it very amazing that if you click on the "See my all reviews" box that these same people also highly recommend all the other books by the same author?WOW imagine that! Type in the names Harris H. McIlwain and Debra Fulghum Bruce in a search engine and see the 100 other books these people have in print. They sound like the experts for every sickness and illness known to man.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed and presents surprising new findings
If you have fibromyalgia, this book can change your life, as it did mine. The breakthrough medical information was highly interesting. The authors also presented surprising new findings on which foods and exercise programs actually decrease pain and inflammation--and which ones increase pain. The natural therapies presented by Dr. McIlwain were also revealing with 5-HTP and SAM-e having been found to resolve pain and depression and help aid in getting sound sleep.Read more
