4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I still have my doubts
First off let me say that this is the most optimistic book on this "disease" that I know of. The author seems highly qualified and really knows his subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Kudos to Irwin Silber!
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and reassuring
The very notion of hip replacement surgery can be frightening to the patient who is not emotionally and mentally prepared for the event. Having had both of my hips replaced within a five-month period, I was lucky to have found Silber's helpful guide ahead of time. It answered many of my questions, educated me on issues I had not considered, and also made me feel less alone and frightened. I have recommended it to other hip replacement patients as one of the best books out on this topic. Arming yourself with knowledge helps ease the fear and paves the way for quicker recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
In my quest to educate myself before my hip replacement, this was the first book I selected. The fact that the book addresses knee replacement as well is a plus, as I suspect that many who need hip replacement will atsome time also need knee replacement.I enjoyed the detail of what toexpect, the enthusiasm of the writer and the resulting feeling of "Ican DO this!"Since I'll be recovering at my mom's, I sent a copy toher so she'll know what's going on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was My Inspiration to Begin a Treatment that Works
I was diagnosed with RA some 24 years ago. Since that time, I have avoided the conventional treatments for this disease and have kept it in remission by various alternative therapies. However, about four years ago, the RA returned with a vengence and nothing was helping. My doctor at Whitaker Wellness Institute recommended a long term treatment with a form of tetracycline but I was skeptical until I read this book. It was as though it had been written for me. So on May 14, 2005, when my rheumatoid factor had hit 880, I began treatment with 100 mg of minocin twice daily. My latest blood test at the end of March 2006 showed the rheumatoid factor to be 188. I feel a great deal better and have made several lengthy trips during this time, which would have been impossible when I began treatment. I intend to continue this treatment until like others my rheumatoid factor is within normal range. This book is an inspiration with dozens of success stories. Thank God for Dr. Brown's persistence in the face of the scorn and ridicule of his contemporaries. Anyone with an autoimmune condition should read this book. And shame on the doctors who are not letting their patients know of its existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Works
I have followed the protocol in this book, no thanks to the rheumatologists who doubted it.After five years on minocycline, my RA factor is 30.It was 170 before I started the treatment.Minocycline is the only variable in my treatment. It also brought my SED rate and C-reactive protein back to normal levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book confirmed what my body was telling me!
I am completly amazed by what this book has said! I have thought for years, that the methods that were applied to me were not the correct medicine. The drugs only made me worse. I have sent this book to a friend that also has RA and is terrible shape. Every example in the book has pertained to me. Now to find a Dr. in my area that can help. I live in mid CA. I will present my specialist with this book and ask him if he will read it and follow this plan. If not I'll be on my way to new DR. Thank you, Thank you! DR. Brown and all who helped and the author Henry Scammell for his work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have text for anyone treating neuromuscular pain
This is a comprehensive yet clinically accessible text. It welcomes readers with differing backgrounds to come aboard and comfortably absorb new vistas presented without ever taking them too far from their own medical perspectives. It covers Oriental Medicine in its entirety (acupuncture and related techniques, herbal medicine, and body work), Cyriax style Orthopaedic medicine, Osteopathic manual medicine, electrotheraputics, rehabilitation and orthosis therapy. It builds upon fundamental concepts as well as summarizes and encapsulates extensive information. In short this is both a comprehensive text and a clinical manual that every reader regardless of training would find informative
5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Balanced Text
This book provides healthcare practitioners a balanced text that comprehensively covers the topic of musculoskeletal medicine. In this text East meets west, orthodox meets alternative and somatic meets visceral in a clinically useful text. The book is much more than a how-to-manual by offering insights built upon foundational concepts. It provides a vehicle to transport medical understanding beyond common boundaries and to introduce key concepts about the impact of the musculoskeletal system in diagnosis and treatment in a user-friendly fashion. Clinicians will appreciate the even-handed overview of several healthcare systems and immense clinical utility of the text. While the text draws upon an eclectic range of ideas, it does so while remaining true to Chinese, Osteopathic, and Orthopaedic Medicine principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hyperthyroid/Graves patients NEED to read this book
I am a 4+ year Graves disease veteran who is currently in remission.I strongly believe that EVERY newly diagnosed person should read this book BEFORE they make any decision on any PERMANENT treatment procedure such as surgery or radioactive iodine ablation (RAI).5-0 out of 5 stars Helped us make this important and rather emotional decision
My spouse has been battling with Hyperthyroidism for 15 years, going on and off PTU and in and out of remission. Her latest annual blood work indicated that she was hyper again which re-opened the dialog about what treatment to choose (drug therapy, radioactive iodine, or surgery).
5-0 out of 5 stars Thyroid for Dummies
I just had thyroid surgery and I picked up a copy of Thyroid for Dummies so I could get informed about what was happening. Thyroid for Dummies answered all my questions, and gave me all the information I needed to understand what I was going through. After reading this book, I know more about the thyroid gland than I did before! The book is written in easy to understand language, and uses humor which put my mind at ease. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with thyroid disease, anyone undergoing thyroid surgery, and anyone who just wants to know more about their thyroid gland. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical
I thought that this book contained an informative behind the scenes look at the orthopedic world.Although I believe that many are not out to simply get you in surgery, I'm sure there are a good portion that are and this book will give you cues on how to spot a happy cutting surgeon. This book will also awaken you to the fact that the doctor is merely a human being, sometimesmaking educated guesses into your condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
If you or someone you knows has knee problems this is one of the only books you may need. It goes into detail about all different areas from how MRIs can read false positive to what to look for in a Dr. and how to pick one out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do you trust your doc?
Orthopaedic docs come from the ranks are our county's best and brightest.Surely I can count on getting top quality care for my knee, right? That's what I figured, but Dr Grelsamer explains why this ain't necessarily so as only an insider can.(Money, the medial system, tremendous technology changes, and the tricky nature of the knee come into play.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain relief
This book was extremely helpful in finding alternative ways to relieve pain and increase mental power over the negative emotions related to Fibro.I plan to refer to it from time to time to keep my perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best investment ever!
Having been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 1996 I would not have expected to learn boatloads of material from this book. But, much to my surprise, and with the giant library of FMS literature already owned, I DID learn more than a boatload, of knowledge! I was hoping to learn a few new facts here and there. I sat down and flipped it open to see what the inside was like, and to my astonishment, I found I could not stop long enough to start reading at the beginning of that chapter let alone the beginning of the book. I could not believe that I could have learned so much information after all this time. I have been a host in a support chat for years and still found I missed out on vital tips and information. The greatest part about this, well one of them, was when Dr. Williamson discussed a topic that is a problem to most, then she also had a positive reaction to the situation. I was thrilled to read ideas to help some of the topics I couldn't find help with for years! One of the best ideas in this book, that is missing in many, is a Resources Section, one written in common English! I have already started to use the resources today. I called for some catalogs for items that I didn't know where to find nor from companies that I knew nothing about.5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to read
Ms. Williamson, herself a patient with fibromylagia, follows up on her previous book, "Fibromyalgia: A comprehensive approach" with a very up to date information, practical ideas and coping strategies for millions of patients with fibromyalgia. A job well-done. .... ... Read more

My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn't
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating bothbooks as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service ora hustle.Written by three different laureled academics and obviously puttogether by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller andoccasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I hadread twenty years ago.The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamineand chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the bookcould be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatmentof osteoarthritis.People bought the book in the hope that it would helpthem with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would bemotivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandablywould not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by anauthoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the bigquestion-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good peptalk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain sincethe book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote aboutpatriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel." 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for another remarkable book!
I'm not sure which book I enjoyed more; The Arthritis Cure or it's follow-up, Maximizing the Arthritis Cure.Either way, Dr. Theodosakis has done it again with an inspirational and helpful book.As a nurse, I recommended his latest book to my father who suffers from osteoarthritis inhis knees. He has experienced exceptional relief from taking theglucosamine and chondroitin and following the other steps of the plan.Hehas been able to almost stop taking ibuprofen other than when he has a badflare up. Now he is able to garden more comfortably and with betterbiomechanics and he is walking the dog on a regular basis again---the dogis grateful to the good doctor as well!I'm glad that more people in themedical community are coming around to recognize the power of thesesupplements. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and began a search for more information.A woman on an online forum pointed me towards this book.I picked it up and read it in one sitting. The language is not overly complex- very understandable. But gave me a much better understanding of my condition, and what can be done about it.The individual patient's stories were also pretty inspirational.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book has help me understand in great detail how the spine vertbrae's are linked. With the surgeons letter i was able to see what parts of the spine where affected on my son. This helped to inform me, in a manner in which is easy to understand as the book is written in PLAIN English. I would Reccommend this book to parents or people with Scoliosis wishing to be informed without medical terms.Helps take away the fear of the unkown.rating by me 8 out 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women over 50--a must read
This is an excellent, very current overview of this all too common disease and its treatment. Let's face it--we're all responsible for our own health, few of us use the same physician for our whole adult lives, and education is a must. Most of us are generally aware of this disease, but did you know: that hip fractures are really breaks in the femur neck, the top of the thigh bone? that there are several drugs out there to treat this, not just fosamax? that osteoporosis can result from lack of calcium or exercise during childhood? This book explains what those T-scores from your bone density test really mean. Lots of info here too on exercise and diet. A bit less interesting is the personal discussion from Ann Richards on her own life, but that doesn't mar this extremely useful work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full disclosure
While I found this book to be useful and Ms. Richards' style to be non-technical and engaging, I wish that, before I bought the book, I had seen the statement which is on the reverse of the title page: "Ann Richards is a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, which owns the patent for Evista.Dr. Richard U. Levine, M.D. has been a member of the speakers' bureau for Eli Lilly."

Nor does it say you are a hypochondriac, or you want to feel bad to get out of work...
1-0 out of 5 stars A disservice to FM suffers.
This book may work for some as witnessed by other reviewers, however, I feel it perpetuates the myth that FM is only in one's head.We have enough physicians who are "non believers" (I've met a few) as it is.If FM patients can cure themselves with mental exercises, then I say "have at it."Whatever works; I fully understand that desperate people will try desperate measures. But if it works for FM, then it should work equally for cancer, heart disease, spinal injuries, Parkinson's, diabetes, et al.When, oh when, will they find out the real PHYSICAL cause for this malady?I await the day. Only then will we find a real cure. ... Read more

This book saved my life! I highly reccomend it! 20 yrs ago when I was 30 I could barely walk. I was always in so much pain... every dang joint in my body! Now I am totally healthy at 50!!! The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthritis and Common Sense
When my grandfather wrote this book, my mother was just two years old.I know a lot has changed in the world of medicine and scientific discovery has improved all of our lives, but one constant remains, nothing is better for preventing a problem or solving one than good common sense. My grandfather was well ahead of his time, his theories teach people that a simple solution is often times the best solution. Now almost 50 years later, evidence and testimonials have proven him to be right, and because it is in all of our best interests to protect our joints and our bodies, take this book home and read through it. ... Editorial Review

This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor(and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and relatedconditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these termssound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.Read more

Most books on RSI are poison for your mind. You'll read about: RSI horror stories, how the body is fragile and easily injured, and how you should curtail your work and daily activities. All of this will only make the pain worse, and will increase the number and the severity of your symptoms. You'll start to become afraid to do anything--the fear will make the pain worse, and the pain will make the fear worse, creating a downward spiral.
3-0 out of 5 stars good
I found this to be the best book as far as having pictures to show how to do stretches and on good typing technique.4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive introduction to RSI.
"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years. ...
