1-0 out of 5 stars Haved looked or cared for it yet
I got this book and honestly found it a big disappointment. Most of the info in it is in other books and the recipes really arent any big deal.I knew most of the nutrition info already. If you already have a library of FM or nutrition info, this book is pointless.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!
Of all the books i have purchased on fibromyalgia- this is the best. This has become my 'bible' on nutrition for treatment of fibromyalgia. I highly recommend this book!!!It has great information on grains, problems with additives, metals and other toxins, essential vitamins and minerals to take and which ones to avoid and also contains some great recipes!!!With the guiding help of this book, i have been able to do well managing my fibromyalgia and it has helped me feel good enough to start an exercise program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with nutritional facts - Lacking application
The book has lots to offer if you want a quick reference as to what role vitamins and minerals play in the human body. It also discusses different herbs, flours and sweeteners.

This book has saved my life.Ignore the idiot reviewers who condemn this book as too hard to apply. If you want your life back you will get this book and you will do everything in your power to do everything the protocol calls for.If it is not working it is something you are not doing.Try harder and figure it out!You are in charge. No one is going to do it for you. This book shows you how you can do it.So do it.I did it and hundreds of others have too.We have all wanted to live, instead of existing in a cloud of pain and fatigue. So LIVE!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
I bought the Wharton's Stretching book and liked it, finding it very useful as a martial artist. This book, however, merely rehashes everything in the Stretching book, but in an inferior manner. Although it has photos instead of drawings, the Wharton's Stretch book clearly shows acceptable ranges of motion for each stretch. In addition, the Back Book has a section on training with weights that bordered on ridiculous. The author's clearly know little about neither weight training as therapy nor weight training for strength and flexibility. This book was a real disappointment. Buy their first book, avoid this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works, if you work it!
If a person with back problems reads and follows the advice in this book, their situation will improve. There is no magic fix for back pain, but the vast majority, regardless of the diagnoses, will be reduced or even eliminated by correcting the imbalances in the hips. This book tells how to do this. The imbalances were developed over many years, so it will take some time to overcome them.If you want a healthier back, this is the answer, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive review
I and my wife are physicians. She suffers from lower back problems. This book contains easy to follow picures and directions for the exercises. I was very pleased to see their balanced (and truthful) comments regarding durgs and alternative therapies.I agree with their advice toseek professional opinions as other diseases can mimick lower back problems.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree
I've had FMS for over 7 years and have read tons of books and done a lot of research. This book is the most excellent by far, and is worth it if just for the condensed version of the latest research. All in all this should be a required manual every doctor hands an FMS patient. Please do yourself a favour and buy it. PS - Compliment it with "The Fibromyalgia Advocate" and "Fibromyalgia: The New Integrative Approach : How to Combine the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Fibromyalgia
I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This book answered all of my questions about the disease and provided me with ways to cope with my illness. The book is well written and packed with information. I highly recommend this book to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be the handbook given to all patients when diagnosed!
This book is outstanding, extremely well written, and very down to earth and reaches everyone no matter where in their journey they are.I run a support group for fibromyalgia and have been diagnosed for over 10 years. This is one of the best books I have read on this topic and have recommended it to all that I come into contact with in the FMS world!

I ha recommended this book to many people and bought it as gifts. i faithfully do the exercises and follow the menus. I even showed it to my dr. It is wonderful for those of us who are older and even the younger since I bought it for my daughter-in-law

5-0 out of 5 stars must have reference book for home library
I took out a number of books from the library including recent releases. Admittedly, I reviewed them from a different perspective than older folks as I'm just over 40.This was the most informative book with relevant information to my age group. Even though I work out regularly and thought I had a pretty good routine, there were plenty of enlightening strength exercises that have never been in my repertoire. That reason alone rates this book superior than others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr St Amand
A friend referred me to this book and I am so grateful to God. I was diagnosed with FMS at the start of the year but didn't know much at all about it. Seems noone really knows how to treat it in Australia - just treat the symptoms and wait it out. I have found this book helpful because (a) for the first time I knew a lifetime of atypical symptoms actually are quite typical FMS (b) it gave me an action plan (that I am currently undetaking) and (c) it was easy enough for me to read; AND(d) it was technical enough for my doctor to read and follow through on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book no longer in print
As the author of this book, ISBN 0446675121, I must say it is no longer in print. A new edition, ISBN 0-446-69444-4, was released in January 2006 to correct inaccuracies and to update data. It's time Amazon showed the new cover under "Fibromyalgia" and blended the two editions into display.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resurrect Your Functional Value! This Book Will Tell You How!
A 'MUST buy' if you know you have fibromyalgia (FM) or think you may have this disease! If FM has taken away your functional value, this book is for you!Medical advice that is given for FM is: exercise, rest and drugs given for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, pain, IBS, and too many other complaints to list. For all those that haven't found any of these things to help or found that they did help, for awhile, only to see the same complaints reappear and the appearance of new ones...THIS book is for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date and Not Evidence Based
This book was published in 1995 (so of course was written in about 1993-94) so its information is very out of date. Since that time technology has introduced the BMD bone density scan, and the pharmaceutical industry has developed and promoted the use of bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Evista. These two developments alone have rendered this book totally out of date and therefore not useful, in my opinion. Also, the information is not evidence-based, most of his recommendations are based on anecdotal and observed results, rather than on scientific studies. What he has to say is interesting, sometimes even fascinating, but is it accurate? For example, his recommendations on caffeine are based on the result of an "experiment" of giving three cups of coffee to five women. I don't consider that evidence-based medical protocol.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
This book is excellent and has surpassed my expectations of information, not only on osteoporosis, but many other aspects of health care.In fact, I am so pleased with it that I have bought a total of 4 copies, 3 being for my children. Two of them are in health care, and the third will also benefit immensely from the knowledge this book provides. Thank you, Dr. Gaby, for writing this book and sharing your knowledge and research with those of us with osteoporosis, and those who can head off its devastating effects.

3-0 out of 5 stars old copyright but good basics

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Surprising
I got this book in hopes that it would tell me something about diet and arthritis. It is mostly about eliminating things from your diet, in order to isolate food alergies.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had read this book a year ago - very valueable info
This is a GREAT book! I ordered a stack of books about 1 ft high from amazon.com on Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, muscle weakness and joint stiffness. THIS BOOK had my answers! I read other very good books but this ONE book was the only one I needed to read. It EXPLAINS things! Step by step. I did the 5-day water fast as the book talked about and all my pains dissappeared!! Now I am food testing because I did not know about food allergies which had been causing me Flare-ups every now and then. The book had EXACT stories of muscle stiffness/weakness JUST LIKE ME! It described my exact symptom and had the correct cure. I'm only 41yrs old, too young to feel so old! I very very highly recommend this book!! I tell all my friends about it. I am now recovering from over a year of muscle stiffness and weakness. Everyone should read this book if not just for the value of learning WHY we should eat healthy and what foods ARE healthy and not and WHY so. It explains things, which is why I love this book! Easy to read and understand! If I had this book just a few weeks earilier, I could have saved myself from having a $2,200 MRI - which turned up just fine! It was my bad eating habits. Knowledge is key! This book gives knowledge. We go to school and College to learn a skill but no one teaches us the important of what foods to eat and why. America has the worst diet! I changed my diet and I got better, the book taught me knowledge of foods, food allergies, and understanding so much that I can't type it all. If you read the entire book, you'll be making recommendations here just like I am doing. I am just a regular person and no way related to the book or website here. I hope this helps someone who maybe reading it. READ THIS BOOK!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really about choices
As a potential candidate for hip replacement, I was eager to read the book to learn more details about how to compare and contrast the different options.Unfortunately I didn't get this from the book.Instead, it's almost an historical summary of this woman's step-by-step process through surgery.I hoped for so much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Bio
I bought this book hoping for an objective assessment of the benefits of hip replacement versus hip resurfacing. It does not come close to the promise of its title.Basically, it is a description of the author's experience, which, though valid, does not provide an objective perspective. There are a few useful words of advice, but overall this book is an advocacy platform for resurfacing.Having said that, I did give an extra star because I now feel more compelled to look further into resurfacing than I would have otherwise done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Informational, but not well written and over priced
This book is presented as a brief bio of the journey the author went through to find a solution to back and hip pain.It is a quick read, and you will find tidbits of information regarding total hip replacement surgery verses hip resurfacing.Since it is a personal account, there is relatively little medical information except for some drawn diagrams and a forward by her surgeon. If you can get past the poor grammar and poorly contructed sentences, this may well be a book you can use. I was looking for a book with an emphasis on these two medical procedures. I found that I had to sift through the personal accounts of her own experience to gleen what information I could that might pertain to my situation. It is encouraging to see her results as portrayed in the pictures of her post surgery pilates classes. As the author well says on many occasions, the information regarding both total hip replacement surgery and hip resurfacing surgery is readily available on the internet. The actual procedure called hip resurfacing is so new in the United States you will hardly find a physician who will perform it, much less an insurance company who will pay for it.It isn't terribly helpful to know the author had to travel to Belgium (all at her own expense) to have this procedure done on her hips, as most of us simply cannot afford this option.Save the money you would spend on this book, and search the internet for information instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth having if you're interested in Rheumatology
In medical school, rheumatology is one of those subjects that most medical students cannot really conceptualize and end up memorizing a list of autoimmune diseases along with their specific antibodies. This book has the potential to change this view.
4-0 out of 5 stars NICE BOOK WITH PRACTICAL ORIENTATION
Embellished with colourful figures and tables, this "Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases" handled general rheumatology in way that would appeal to both clinicians and students. Its practical orientation include the diagnosis and management of all sorts of rheumatic disorders.4-0 out of 5 stars Certainly good but...
...getting too long. This was one of the most useful little books a med student could hope for, a really concise look into a single subject area. I used it for my 4th year elective, then the next edition for my Rheum rotation as a PGY-II, and then throughout Fellowship. I give the latest edition to each med student who rotates through our Rheum clinic, but I find they are less and less impressed by it as the size of the Primer approaches that of a textbook. The information is still excellent, but I think it's getting too big for the niche it has always occupied. If you really want that much info, buy the latest Kelley. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This program works.
I do a lot of knitting and fibercrafts and had to take long breaks from it to recuperate, sometimes days. With these exercises my hands feel fine even after many hours of knitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for repetitive strain injuries
I am an Occupational Therapist who specializes in Hand Therapy.Kate` Montgomery's book is a very helpful resource for anyone suffering from repetitive strain injuries. This wholistic approach is a good blend of techniques from various health traditions. It is written in layman's terms with excellent illustrations that help you understand the cause of the pain and why you should follow the suggested program of stretches and massage. The self-massage techniques and exercises are especially helpful for those who need visual reminders of how to perform the various massage techniques and stretches. This book is a good supplement to treatment for those who are currently under the care of a health professional as well as those who are not in treatment. It is self-empowering for those willing to take responsibility for their health and follow the suggested 12 step corrective program on a daily basis. The sports balm is a helpful addition that promotes healing and relief of pain.

I've been playing drums for 10 years and using a computer intensively for the last 4 years for both study and work. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the just-diagnosed
This is a good fibromyalgia book to buy if you have just been diagnosed and you are looking for practical advice on how to cope with your illness.Though not as detailed and complete as Starlanyl and Copeland'sFibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome, it is also lessoverwhelming and so is particularly good for someone who is feelingoverwhelmed, doesn't like a lot of medical information, or has a mild formof the disease. The chapters "You aren't alone", "MakingLifestyle adjustments," and "Practical helps for specificproblems" are quite good, as are the three chapters on managingfatigue, stress, and flareups.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book I have read on this subject.
This book has brought peace of mind and a greater understanding of what is happening in my body. No one enjoys chronic pain and it is confusing to feel so full of pain everywhere one day and then feel better the next onlyto ache worse the following day. This book makes one realize that this ispart of the syndrome. It offers hope and acceptance and is easy tounderstand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Sense Out of A Mysterious Illness
When my doctor told me he thought I had fibromyalgia, I thought "Oh, great! A garbage can diagnosis--he's telling me something just to keep me happy." I had gone through every pamphlet on the office wall and this was the last one he had that he could hand to me. It didn't make me feel any better. I still have the sleep disorder, the chronic pain and fatigue. I have periods in which I can be semi-normal, and other periods when I'm a zombie. My employer gave up on me and my government doesn't believe I have a disability that should be covered by SSDI. Meanwhile, I suffer.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Simplistic
I was pretty excited when I found this title since I've been trying to find a comprehensive but easy to read book on this disease.Unfortunately, this guide is a bit too basic. If you know absolutely nothing about fibromyalgia, this book may help you gain a basic understanding of the symptoms and treatments.I've been living with fibromyalgia for a few years, & I didn't learn anything new from this book.I guess it at least supported what I've been doing so the time spent reading the Idiot's Guide wasn't totally wasted.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Manual & Guide for Anyone wanting to Understand more about Fibromyalgia!Don't Let the Title Fool You!
I was officially diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (FMS) in 1998 at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ.Back in 1998, there were very few books written for patients with fibromyalgia, let alone ones which would walk you through the entire process from "diagnosis to wellness." Although more books have recently become available, do not let the title of this book fool you! It is far more than just an entry level book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Fibromyalgia!
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fibromyalgia" should be everyone's first choice when selecting a resource book on fibromyalgia. Ms. Matallana has incorporated information suitable for anyone interested in learning about FM, from those who are newly diagnosed to those who have been living with the illness for a long time, the healthcare practitioners treating them, and the friends and family, trying to understand what has happened to their once energetic loved one. In her own unique, personable style that has earmarked the National Fibromyalgia Association's magazine publication, "Fibromyalgia Aware" as the superior periodical it has become, "The Guide" addresses all aspects of living with this syndrome. She utilizes easily understandable charts, lists, and personal anecdotes in a positive "You are not alone" manner that gives hope to even the most desparately ill. Her "picture this..." illustrations of her own experience with FM will surely bring a smile of recognition to a number of her readers with fibromyalgia! I was particularly impressed with her clarity and sensitivity in discussing the trials and tribulations manypatients face when the illness forces them to make major, dramatic changes in their lifestyle. Using a text-box format, she focuses the reader's attention to defining potentially unfamiliar terminology, calling it "vocabulary lesson". In the same manner, she also uses "fast facts" to describe important, sensible suggestions for patients to use in designing their own, personal health care plan, "Caution-Pain Signal" as warnings for especially important issues. No one's fibromyalgia library should be without this wonderful edition! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource - Hope and Help to Get a Grip on RA
This book is awesome. I only wish I had known about it sooner! I've had RA for 15 years, and was a patient in the clinical trial for Enbrel. Enbrel gave me back my life. But after 7 years, the effect has tapered off even after my rheumy added methotrexate. Last appointment, he said we ought to think about changing to a different TNF blocker. He recommended Remicade, which is an IV treatment, and told me to think about it. I wasn't quite sure what to think.

As a 32 year-old father comming to terms wit a disease that is considered 100% fatal, it is refreshing to hear of people living with ALS and simply not dying from it. Like the author I have done quite a bit of research on ALS and come to many of same conclusions. Eris Is Winning!! has been a becon of hope for me and my family. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
This is an incredible book on fibromyalgia written by an MD who actually has the disorder. In my opinion, it is a "must have" for everybody with FMS, their health care practitioners, and their significant others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Information on FM
This is the most easy to understand and best compiled information I have on Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain. Recently I have been having a lot of "spells" with A-Fib and "chest" pain. All my test on my heart show the heart is in excellant condition. I had not referred to this book in awhile but when I dusted it off I found the answers to the problems I have been experiencing. Especially in the section "What to tell your Cardiologist" and "What to tell the Emergency Room Drs". It is great to know your heart checks out in "great condition" and that there is an answer to why you are experiencing what you are experiencing. Now I know what course I need to take and I am reassured of no heart problems.

"The Fibromyalgia Advocate" along with "Fibromyalgia and Chronic Mypfascial Pain" are two must haves if you or someone you love suffers from FMS.The pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia is REAL and it is NOT all in the patient's head (IAIYH) as some doctors may suggest.FMS patients are suffering and suffering miserably. These two books are wonderful resources for the FMS patient and family.I use them in my patient lending library in my office.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I got better relief from Borders Cafe than a massage
I've been having back pain in the morning for the last few months after some furniture moving. I stopped at Borders for a coffee and picked this up to read (ok, I'm shameless). After about an hour with the book, I developed a game plan for dealing with the backache which I learned is of a very common garden type. It might be too early to declare victory but I woke this morning with almost no pain after sleeping in the prescribed position with a heating pad and taking a few NSAIDS before bed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Only one reservation - be careful doing the exercises.
Overall, a very informative book, as everyone else says. My only reservation - be careful doing the exercises in the book. The author also has a warning about this - he says "at no point during your back exercise program, should you feel that you are straining...to the point of significantly increasing your pain."

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Hope
I felt pretty "down" after receiving a diagnosis of osteoporosis. After reading this book from cover to cover I realize all the things I should have been doing--and not doing. I liked the clear explanations about supplements, alkaline diet, and weight bearing exercise. I'm following the directions, and I'm full of hope. Also I'm ordering four more copies to give to my daughters and daughters-in-law.I want them to avoid that dreaded diagnosis.5-0 out of 5 stars Better Bones, Better Body: Beyond Estrogen and Calcium
Dr. Susan Brown is an anthropologist who notes dietary and lifestyledifferences in Western countries, which exhibit widespread osteoporosis, and Asian countries, where this disease and various problems (includingmenopausal discomforts) seem rare. She emphasizes that osteoporosis is nota normal aging process nor a strictly female malady. She explains that thebuilding and breakdown of bone is a continual process intimately related tomany body processes. She lucidly details the mechanisms of this "boneremodeling."She discusses risk factors for osteoporosis: heredity, body type, sedentary lifestyle, SAD (Standard American Diet), endocrineimbalances, and hormonal disturbances (abetted by tubal ligation, hysterectomy, ovarectomy).Brown notes early signs of trouble in smallitems like weak fingernails, irregular periods, excessive plaque formation, leg cramps at night, lower back pain. She advocates various modalities toreverse osteoporosis by whole body approaches involving maximizing nutrientintake, strenghtening the disgestive system, and developing an alkalinediet. She cites specific studies on progesterone (Dr. John Lee) andnutritional supplements (Dr. Guy Abraham) and exercise (Dr. Dalsky).Thisbook is clear enough for the layman with ample references for theprofessional. The book gives you insight to what is happening inside yourbody and how you can take steps to stop or reverse osteoporosis.Dr.Brown's "whole body balance" approach will have you stepping out, enjoying veggies, and learning about soy and progesterone on the way tostronger bones. ...
