3-0 out of 5 stars Easier Recipes Needed
Hello-I really enjoyed reading this book. Heather's personal story and advice for IBS suffers is useful (at least for me). Although she does lay out the basic nutritional information on fiber and other trigger foods. Her recipes are far too complicated, I'm a graduate student with very little time for cooking. So the recipes are just too time consuming. I need easier and faster recipes. Some of the breakfast ideas fit into my lifestyle, but the dinners are complicated, although they sound delicious. Perhaps someday I will have time to try them. If Heather (the author) is reading this, please write a recipe book with easier and faster IBS safe recipes. I'd definately buy it! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars New lease on life!!
The information in this book has restored my health!!Not only do I feel better I have lost 13 lbs. in 5 weeks. This food program, plus the peppermint oil gel caps, allows my food intake to stay with me and I am benefiting nutritionally.I am so thankful that Heather Van Vorous shared this information.I haven't felt this well in three years!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating for IBS- A Review
EATING FOR IBS is an excellent source of useful information for persons diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).The author (an IBS sufferer herself) writesclearly and with the compassion and understanding of a person who had lived with the symptoms of IBS for years before a correct diagnosis was made. However, she was not provided withinformation about managing the symptoms on a daily basis. On her own shedevised a regimen of safe foods, herbal teas and a natural soluble fiber supplement that (from my personal experience) works to effectively manage IBS symptoms. She identifies certain foodsthat can cause problems and should be avoidedor eaten very carefully, for instance with soluble fiber. The discussion of the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber and their effect on the digestive system and IBSis the most informative and thorough of anything I have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digestive issues? Read on...
I thought this book was really helpful for those who are stuggling with their weight or have digestive issues but are unclear why.
2-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, useful reference
The book recaps material from other authors, such as Sherry Rogers, M.D. and other experts, in a handy and straight forward way. Having read numerous more complicated books while struggling with fatigue and brain fog, this one was a breath of fresh air (pun intended). It also has significant original material that I had not read elsewhere. All in all, an excellent read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
Nothing I tried made a positive difference in my severe IBS until I read this book and followed the guidelines. Though at first it seemed a daunting task to change my attitude about what (and what not) to eat, I soon felt so good that the change in diet became effortless.I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from IBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT! Save yourself tons of grief and toilet paper :)
This book is awesome. I learned what I could/could not eat over 4 years of trial and error. I wish I had this book when I was diagnosed so I could have been saved lots of pain, suffering, grief and frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book & It's Companion Gave Me My Life Back
Having been diagnosed with IBS 6months ago, after months & months of uncontrollable BM's & fear of even leaving my home, I was glad to have a name for it. But like most IBS sufferers my Dr. simply said "We don't know a cause or a cure. Go home and take Citrucel 2 times daily."

Finally a helpful book anyone can understand.Lots of informative sections on everything from gallbladder attachs, IBS, to ulcers.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother. Its mostly drivel
Hey. Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. This isn't really a book about bowel problems. Its about anecdotal, unsupported, stories about some people who might have improved anyway. No science. No pretense of science. Not much information. Just look at how many used copies are for sale. Save your money. Stop going to MacDonalds, go home and cook yourself a good meal. Get a cookbook. Learn to cook. Don't buy this book. Drivel

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for patients and doctors
As a naturopathic physician, treating the gut is a core principle. This book was recommended by one of my teachers and now that I am a practicing doctor I often refer back to this book. It offers patients (and doctors) a look at how true healing of the gut is approached. I highly recommend this book to all people. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Totally contridictory information
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful guide
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me.The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet.I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel.A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book if it's not the only one you read.
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber.Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and inspirational book!
Not only is this an excellent book for those suffering from bowel disorders, but I feel that anyone with health issues can benefit from the text. The author shares his battle with a debilitating bowel diasese (Ulcerative Colitis). He shares the most personal of experiences as he hits the lowest of lows but continues to fight back and take control of his health...and his life again. Very inspirational! The author has a unique writing style that captivates the reader and makes one hang onto his every written word. The artwork is outstanding, as well.It is unique in its own right, and fits in very nicely with the text. Those with bowel issues will most certainly relate and find this book helpful, but I think anyone who has ever faced an "uphill battle" in life (who hasn't?)will benefit from reading how the author found the inner strength to continue to fight his battle with illness despite a lack of insight from the medical community, a lack of support, at times, from loved ones and a deminishing state of health. Great book!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging story for anyone
I will start off by saying that I don't have colitis. I borrowed this book from a friend for a long bus trip, and I read it straight through. IBD must be a nasty affliction to have, to be sure, but that's not what kept me turning page after page. Prasad's narrative is so thoroughly engaging and intelligent that he could have been writing about someone's battle with a splinter received from a chopstick and still I would have kept reading.5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU HAVE INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE, READ THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL SOLUTIONS FOR EMBARASSING SYMPTOMS
Although I had been previously diagnosed with celiac disease with dairy intolerance, this book made me consider that my ongoing symptoms were more than gluten or dairy contamination accidents. In simple, layman's language, Dr. Wangen explains the 'normal' digestive process and problems that can arise in that system (like diarrhea and constipation). Then he describes the common medical approaches ('Treating the Symptoms, Ignoring the Cause') for 'IBS' symptoms. That section describes the typical journey of misdiagnoses and dead ends, which many celiacs take before getting a correct celiac disease diagnosis.Next he discusses the common causes of 'IBS' symptoms, which include celiac disease, food allergies and 'bugs' (such as bacteria imbalances, yeast and parasites). Finally he tells how he determines what causes a patient's symptoms and the appropriate treatment to eliminate those symptoms.
5-0 out of 5 stars A complete guide for the procedures involved with IBS
The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution by Stephen Wangen (Founder of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment Center) has as its focus a medical condition estimated to affect as many as fifty million Americans today. A complete guide for the procedures involved with IBS, The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution informs readers of the causes of IBS in general and how to find the particular cause(s) of their own IBS symptoms; why most treatments don't directly address the causes of IBS; how to treat IBS once the cause is discovered; where to go for help; and how to live life with a healthier and less irritated digestive system. The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution is very highly recommended for non-specialist general readers having to deal with the condition of IBS with themselves or a loved one, as well as those who are newly diagnosed with IBS and are searching for a complete and thorough explanation of (and treatment for) irritable bowel syndrome.
5-0 out of 5 stars This approach to IBStreatment changed my life
Dr. Wangen's approach, outlined in his book, is to find the underlying CAUSE of IBS. It seems so simple and yet in 20 years of seeking help from a number of doctors, and enduring many tests, no one else could help me. In my first visit with Dr. Wangen he tested for several potential causes and quickly identified my case as food related sensitivities. I have eliminated those foods from my diet and no longer have the symptoms I suffered from for so many years. I believe Dr. Wangen's book outlines a logical approach that can help many people regain their health and life. I also believe every medical general practitioner and internist should be REQUIRED to read it. I highly recommend this book to those who are suffering from IBS and want to feel good again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars if you have bowel disease, you must read this book
I was diagnosed 17 years ago with UC at the age of 21. I've read many books and tried every diet, not to mention been to most types of alternative practitioners, & a slew of western doctors in various states, with no positive results. I recently got this book and for the first time I saw immediate & positive change. This book tells you what to avoid, and WHY. After fighting this disease for many years, I have never felt better. And after reading this book never have I had such a clear understanding of how the body's digestion works, and I certainly have never felt this good in almost 2 decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars This writer can't miss
I always enjoy reading Chopra and this book is no exception - the fact my digestion is far from perfect contributed to a particular interest in this topic! In Ayurvedic medicine, most diseases originate as an imbalance inthe digestive system based on the principle that the constant renewal ofevery part of the human physiology is dependent on proper digestivefunctioning.Ayurveda views digestion as the body's means of extractingintelligence from food and then processing it to support the intelligenceinherent in the entire human physiology.Gives new meaning the words"junk food", doesn't it?5-0 out of 5 stars Read book in one day!
I have gastroparesis (partial paralysis of the stomach) and this book had many lessons I have already learned from living with this condition and offerred many more insights into alternative ways of looking at digestiveprocess and the way we should eat that will help us be healthier.I'vealready tried the "hot water" tip and found it to be helpful! When I read this book I felt as though I were reading my own account of my illness, surgery and recovery.Mr. VanHooser tells from start to finish every step of this debilitating illness. This book is a must read for anyone that suffers from or has a loved one that suffers from IBS.The straightforward manner in which he shares his experience will hit home with anyone who is affected by this disease. It was so much more than the usual informational book, it gave all the information you need but also gifted you with an emotional and physical victory that gives you hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MustRead For People Suffering With IBD
As I read Phillip Van Hooser's book, "It Takes More Than Guts," I felt as though Phillip had written about my struggle with Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD).His description of the disease is so accurate.I have suffered with ulcerative colitis, a form of IBD, for nine years. For the past two years, I have contemplated having my colon removed like Phillip did, but I have repeatedly talked myself out of it because I'm afraid of such an invasive surgery and all of the unknowns. Some of the areas that I especially liked about his book are that it takes you step-by-step from: being diagnosed with IBD, Phillip's experiences with IBD, Phillip's ultimate decision to have surgery, and finally the quality of Phillip's life after surgery. This book takes you through these steps in great detail. This book helped me make important decisions in my life concerning my battle against IBD, and I would highly recommend it to anybody suffering with this disease, or anybody who knows someone who has IBD-this book will allow you to better understand what your loved one is going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dealing with IBD
Van Hooser does a wonderful job of detailing the day-to-day fears, realities, and inconveniences of living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.I especially appreciated how he chronicles what he is thinking as the doctors speak. The reader almost feels like a fly on the wall.Anyone that has lived with IBD can relate to all he goes through to "mask" his illness, and the embarrassment it causes. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough Facts too many quick qonclusions
When a Dr. writes a book, we all assume that all the conculsion will be based in fact as opposed to annecdotal fiction. While Dr.Gerard provides a good explanation of what IBS is and a high level guide to reducing IBS symptoms through diet and lifestyle changes...he fails to provide enough details on the diet that is needed. Also, he does not do a very through job of analyzing and discussing dietary fiber supplements, such as metamucil which have proven useful for many IBS sufferers. For example, in his writing that experts are split on whether or not Metamucil can help IBS sufferers with Dir..h and that he doesn't feel it works is not very useful to a person who just bought this book looking for a "Guide to Prevention and Relief".He should state that for those other experts that think Metamucil is helpful, how they suggest taking the supplement and what are the common issues that surround such therapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting book on learning about IBS and treatment.
To answer your main questions about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gerard Guillory's _IBS: A doctor's plan_ is an excellent place to start. It is filled with useful tips and has a reassuring tone. I highly recommend this book, along with Dawn Burstall et al.'s _IBS relief: A Doctor, a Dietitian and a Psychologist Provide a Team Approach to Managing IBS_. Both books complement each other well and provide useful information. (see my review of Burstall et al. at amazon.com)

5-0 out of 5 stars glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well.I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Out
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.
1-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THAT IPURCHASED THIS BOOK
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber --which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!
