5-0 out of 5 stars Dash Diet works
Not only has the Dash Diet helped with my hypertenion, but I have also lost a few pounds which also helps.Following the suggested foods, you are automatically eating more healthy and have more energy.I would suggest it for anyone and not just those looking to help with hypertension.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy diet!
This diet is very easy and I have already lost 8 pounds after only 3 weeks. My blood pressure is also dropping. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that they do not offer any substitutions for foods that I do not like.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best after the Bible!
Yes, indeed, this is a book that I will always keep. After the Bible, this is the best present I have made to myself. It changed the way I thought about lots of things, it gave me a desire to live the life that God wanted, a healthy one.If I am made with love, why shouldn't I treat myself with love? The recipes are great.Even my husband, who doesn't have hipertension, likes them! So, don't let it pass and get this book soon. You will not regret it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars JNC VII
Whether a clinician or just someone who wants to learn more about the latest treatments for high blood pressure, if you buy a book about hypertension, make sure it incorporates that latest guidelines -- JNC VII (2003). Diagnosis and treatment guidelines changed substantially. I have a copy of this book and like it quite a bit but as far as I know, it has not been updated to include JNC VII recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I was recently diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure and I knew absolutely nothing about it. This book really helped me understand what was going on! It is very clear and easy to read, well-organized and very detailed. I read the entire book and really enjoyed it. I continually refer to it for info about medications, side effects, diet, etc. I would recommend it highly for anyone who needs to know about high blood pressure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO MANAGING HYPERTENSION NATURALLY - WITH MEDS ONLY AS NEEDED
IN A NUTSHELL: E-Z to grasp balanced approach
5-0 out of 5 stars now, this is my kind of doctor!
I never thought I'd find a cardiologist who agrees with me that prescription drugs are a last resort, but here he is. Believe it or not, he even understands enough about real life to tell you to get your chi in shape! If you want to know which supplements live up to their hype (and some of them do), this is the book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm already eating lots of rice and soy...
Ever wonder what Asparagus, Avacados and Anger have to do with hypertension?Although some folks suggest you should not eat Avocados if you are on a low fat diet, perhaps you will reconsider after you read Steven and Jan Sinatra's book. And although asparagus are available seasonally, so you may want to eat as many of the fresh ones as you can and avoid the canned variety unless you wash the salt off. Frozen asparagus are okay but they lack the crunch of course. The Sinatras say your best bet is to freeze your own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done introduction
This book is a nice summary of the subject covering the technical background of high blood pressure as well as treatments-including diet and exercise and drug therapy.Although most of us have primary hypertension-caused by hereditary factors, some have secondary hypertension, ie as a symptom of underlying conditions. The book does name the two most common ones: renal artery stenosis (RAS), about 1/100 odds and pheochromocytoma, about 1/1000 odds. Those taking more than three meds to control high blood pressure should be evaluated for these conditions (though some say the odds are so low, the tests are not worth the cost).
5-0 out of 5 stars great book for the average person with high blood pressure
As an RN I have referred many patients to this as well as other books published by the Mayo Clinic. The material is well written, understandable and offers valuable infomation on many topics surrounding high blood pressure, diet, medications, exercise, as well as alternative therapies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Information
I stopped smoking 8 months ago, and once I stopped I gained over 20lbs. I went to the doctor for several checks ups in a 2 month period, each time my pressure was taken. Each time it was a little high. I was diagnoised with Hypertension a mild case. In my book any case is enough....I was scared.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for beginners
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lower your blood pressure and mitigate many other ailments with magnesium
Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for maintaining a healthy level of blood pressure. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, migraines and other headaches, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnesium -- the forgotten piece of the jigsaw
This useful little book is in the same series as one I reviewed earlier (The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Sufferers).

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition.I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book should not be your only source of information
I'm only giving this book 3 stars because I think someone needs to temper the other reviews with some common sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
Dr. Mark Houston's book promoting nutrition and a healthy lifestyle as potent weapons in the fight against high blood pressure is absolutely excellent. It is refreshing to see an esteemed medical professional embrace alternative therapies rather than relying solely on prescription drugs and vague instructions to "lose weight, exercise, and eat healthier foods."It contains not only useful information and easy-to-understand guidelines for those battling hypertension, but also practical, sound advice for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle.I recommend this book with the highest enthusiasm! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is amazing information and it does work!
I had a b/p of 130/90 -145/94 I am 55. I was suppose to go on lisinopril but every time I started to get the prescrip. I couldn't do it--it just felt wrong. So, I started researching high b/p and signed up for google alerts(on H/P) and one thing lead to another and to this book. I decided to get the book and follow it. I was never a salt-lover, just the opposite but when I started reading the labels of how much salt is in everything you buy--I was shocked.I would have been considered a "health nut"so, realizing that even by those standards, too much "salt" exsist even in Health Foods! I raised my potassium foods per day and added 300mg of Magnesium/potassium supplement by Country life. The drop in my b/p was amazing. It dropped to 115/72 to 117/75. BUT if I stray-- it goes right back up to the 130/90+ b/p. I am genetically thin-I only weight 100lbs. so being told I have high blood pressure was a shock. AND no one addressess H/P in thin people. Dr. Moore talks about "balance" and he is right-- for many people it does take maintaining a balance in your diet. If I eat out at restaurants all weekend--the b/p goes back up. That has been a real eye-opener to how sensitive someone's body can be to what you eat. I wish he had a website. There is so much about high B/P in the news lately and since he wrote this book in 1993 it would be good to have his current prof. opinion. He wrote this book before 120/80 was considered High! So, Dr. Moore if you ever read your reviews--please set up a website!

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This author maintains that blood pressure can be lowered naturally by maintaining a potassium to sodium ratio of 4/1 in your diet without using potassium supplements.I didn't believe it... until I tried it.Within a week, I went from 150/100 to 110/68.I can't wait to show to my doctor how well nutrition therapy works!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works
I was given this book by my wife after struggling (unsuccessfully) with a sudden and dangerous rise in my bp. I went from a lifetime of normal readings to stage 4 hypertension (190/160) at age 39. Over the course of the next nine months, I was on a variety of anti-hypertensives -- three different bp meds simultaneously -- at high doses with only limited success and terrible side effects. I read this book and a month or so later, decided to give Dr. Moore's theory a try. I followed the K factor diet for three months and also quit drinking caffeine. My bp's plunged within weeks and after a few months, I was off all but one med and that was reduced to a very low dose. My doctors -- including a nephrologist -- were stunned by the results. I can't recommend it enough. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not enough information
I found this book to be a summary of all the collective knowledge I have previously obtained on the subject of high blood pressure.I purchased the book looking forward to following their suggested eating plan, however, the receipes do not contain any information with respect to number of servings, calories, sodium content, fat content, etc.You never quite know if that Spinach Pie you just wolfed down was meant to be shared amongst 2 or 6 people.Because of this, I had to give up as I just don't have the time to calculate appropriate servings size, etc.

Editorial Review

"It is our hidden emotions, the emotions we do not feel, that lead to hypertension," writes Samuel J. Mann, M.D., physician/researcher and Associate Professor at the Hypertension Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. "Becoming aware of our hidden emotions and dealing with them can enable both physical and emotional healing," he adds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is amazing. It addresses more than just hypertension. It looks at the way blood pressure links up with diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and even the selective information (and disinformation) we receive from the corporate and medical establishment about this condition. As someone who works with stroke patients every single day, I can tell you the tragedy is real. Not allowing this simple, common sense message to be more widely disseminated is flat out unethical. This book does disseminate it.It is a light shining in the wilderness!
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous!!!
I have been on blood pressure medication for over 15 years. I was first diagnosed with high BP when I was 24. I tried most of the BP medications and hated all of them. I had significant fatigue and lethargy with all of them. I read this book and took the recommendations with respect to a high potassium diet (high K factor). To make a long story short, I have been able to reduce the medication by 2/3. Realize that switching to this diet is not easy. But for me it was, as anything I felt would be better than continuing to take the toxic BP medication. I anticipate that I will be able to completely get off of them soon. ... Read more

Your doctor may have never told you that most blood pressure medicine is dangerous, that for some people, reducing salt intake and drinking more water is as effective as diuretics and much safer, and that in most cases hypertension is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. This information, and much more, is backed up by 28 pages of references.

A Vital New Program to Prevent, Treat, and Reduce High Blood Pressure by Julian M. Whitaker is an extremely easy to follow guide on hypertension, its reasons and effect on our body. The traditional medical establishment has very little clue as to what causes and what to do about many diseases. 3-0 out of 5 stars To Lower Your Blood Pressure
In many cases of high blood pressure you will find that the fat is playing an upper hand. But all fats are not bad for health. Diet has an extremely important role in the treatment of Blood Pressure. Dr Scala clearly mentions about the effect of garlic in the treatment of High Blood Pressure.I have been taking a leave of garlic after each meal for the last so many years and I do not have any complaints with my blood pressure and digestion.I have seen people taking garlic in various forms like capsules etc.But eating natural garlic has the best medicinal value. One drawback may be the smell produced by garlic. But it is nothing compared with the benefits you get.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, synopsis of good advice....
I've been reading extensively about HBP ever since I experienced a stroke last March. So far I find James Scala's book most useful. My physician suggested I lower my salt intake and Scala covers various aspects of the role sodium plays in the body's functions including it's relationship with potassium (K-factor).Potassium is awfully important and most of us don't get enough of it, but sometimes it is difficult to get enough without eating too much sodium. Scala has some easy to follow suggestions regarding the consumption of sodium, including "Start each day with a cereal that has more potassium than sodium..."As oatmeal is a winner, I can eat that or another cooked ceral or if I'm in a hurry, I can eat one of the several dry cereals one can pour from a box, such as the Nabisco Shredded Wheat I've eaten since I was a child and others. Dr. Scala is a certified nutrition specialist who has written a number of books addressing the consumption of food and a particular ailment affecting the human body. 4-0 out of 5 stars Really helps
