5-0 out of 5 stars An essential and effective tool for coping with headaches.
I highly recommend this book as a comprehensive, patient-oriented primer on headaches. It is unique when an authority such as Dr. Buchholz succinctly presents both academic and experiential information on a common disorder which seems to have eluded resolution with most healthcare practitioners. He systematically provides an overview of the field through his extensive knowledge of research, anecdotal reports and experience with a myriad of patients. Having been a patient of Dr. Buchholz, I can emphatically attest to the wisdom, compassion and understanding that he brings to his treatment dynamic. By presenting a stratified educational, behavioral and pharaceutical treatment protocol, he provides not only a foundation for prevention but a unique vehicle for patients to assume collaborative responsibility for their treatment outcome. He has effectively created an essential tool in the arsenal of approaches to coping with headaches.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heal Your Headache - The 1-2-3 Program
I first began having migraines when I was eleven years old. Sometime in my mid-forties, these increased in duration and intensity to about fifteen excruciating days a month. I tried everything that was offered by a variety of doctors - abortive drugs, prophylactic drugs, bio-feedback, acupuncture, chiropractic, hypnosis, oxygen...Nothing helped. I was desperate. Then I saw on Good Morning America an interview with a woman who had been all but cured of her migraines. She had practiced the guidelines set forth in the book Heal Your Headache by David Buchholz. I immediately ordered the book. As soon as it arrived, I began to follow Dr. Buchholz's 1-2-3 Program. In about two weeks, I was noticing improvement. After three months, I was down to three days of migraine a month with much less intensity. It has been about three years now, and I am still doing great. Every now and then I'll have migraines six days a month, but that is still a long way from the fifteen I had been having. I can say without reserve that Dr. Buchholz has given me my life back. I am deeply grateful to him! If you are a migraine sufferer (and you must be to be reading this) please read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This was a eye opening book...I have had migraines for over 10 yrs.I have been thru every doctor, drug, book, diet, etc that I could find.Either they wouldn't work or would work for a short period of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resouce
I liked this book because it actually gave you specific steps to take to decrease and avoid getting migraine headaches.
5-0 out of 5 stars Migraneurs, do yourself a huge favor and read this book!
This book ("Breaking The Headache Cycle") is superbly-edited, very well-written, and immensely helpful to anyone looking for relief from migraine. I've read about ten or so books on this subject; this is by far the best one. Another book ("The 1-2-3 Program" by Dr. Bucholz, I believe) is pretty good, but it's a distant-second when compared to this book by Dr. Livingstone and Ms. Novak. So, fellow-migraneurs, do yourselves a huge favor and get hold of this book! The authors are migraneurs themselves, thus making them uniquely-qualified to provide the insider's guide on this subject; and they give you information and help you can trust.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ending the Pain Cycle
Dr. Livingstone and Donna Novak are the first modern interpreters of migraine to understand and treat migraine as a full-body nerve storm, not a discrete local phenomenon. As a result, their treatment plan is both specific and holistic.A large part of the authors' emphasis is on enhancing the migraine sufferer's ability to identify and control the triggers that stimulate migraine.Their easy-to-use suggestions can be done at home. This is the first treatment program that has successfully stopped my multi-year headache cycle, and I highly recommend it to everyone caught in the snare of migraine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Want An Excellent Resource With Practical Answers and Solutions for Your Migraine and Headache Concerns?
Teri Robert's book 'Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches : What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know' is a superb, easy-to-read and comprehensive resource for anyone who needs help coping with chronic headaches or migraine disease. Many friends and family members are getting a copy of this book right away -- because they desperately need the information. I can't tell you how many are migraine sufferers -- who have every classic symptom -- yet they suffer and muddle through, grabbing an aspirin here and there, thinking somehow that they're just having regular 'headaches!' (Yoo hoo, friends and family, a regular old headache does NOT make you nauseous, sensitive to light, and out of commission for 2 days!!!) I also know too many chronic sinus headache sufferers, and those who struggle with tension headaches, who need some answers, and will benefit greatly from the conventional and holistic approaches outlined by the author, who I've followed for years as a well-respected patient advocate and health writer in the area of headaches and migraine. There's excellent advice on finding the right practitioners (it's not always as easy at it should be!), choosing the best medications, lifestyle choices that can help, and a big fat resource section in the back, filled with websites, organizations, books and other places to get additional information and help. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that anyone with migraines or chronic headaches get this book! And...pick up a copy for everyone you know who doesn't seem to be living well with their own migraine or headache problems, because this book could be the turning point for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Finally a book that really explains things without talking above our heads or oversimplifying.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must buy" book for any migraineur
I was really excited when I heard that Teri Robert was writing a book on Migraine disease, as I was already familiar with Ms. Robert from her work as an advocate for migraine sufferers, and also because she is a migraineur herself, so she is actually writing from the perspective of a migraine patient too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
My husband is trying to eliminate tyramines and other migraine triggers. I was hoping to find a cookbook that would help us create meals that tasted good, were healthy and safe.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for headache sufferers
I had headaches almost daily for about 30 years and FINALLY did something about it.Between this book and the "1-2-3 Program" book, I've eliminated about 98% of my headaches - headaches I thought were incurable.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the content
There are some really good recipes in the book but I was disappointed that so many recipes contain foods believed to be migraine triggers in them. If you are trying to restrict your diet completely from migraine triggers, most of the recipes will not meet your needs without many modifications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Elaine, this really helped!
This book offers a ton of practical information for people who suffer from the 6 common types of headaches. My whole family shared the book. I suffer from hormonal headaches and found that information very helpful while another family member has migraines and is currently filling out her headache diary included in the book) so she can better understand what her triggers are. I loved that there were lots of lists and tips as well as reader-friendly answers to complicated medical questions. I've tried a handful of the recipes so far and they offered tasty and easy to make alternatives to favorite foods that have been identified as potential headache triggers. The reason there are different lists of foods for the different headaches is because each type of headache has different foods to choose and foods to lose. I recommend this book highly! It really helped two people in my family.

1-0 out of 5 stars still hungry
This was a disappointing book to me.I was excited to think I had found a book that would help me build a diet of items that were 'safe' to eat. This book, however, gave the typical lists of what not to eat.It is also pretty confusing because one page will list good foods to eat, for example, that are high in magnesium but includes standard trigger foods such as chocolate and nuts that are noted on other pages as being possible problems. It is like the author just copied the list from somewhere and didn't even bother to note which items are thought to be triggers for migraines. The book also has, in my opinion, a too light-hearted feel to it.I was hoping for some solid advice on what to eat in a no-nonsense tone...but didn't find here unfortunately.Maybe I would like the book better if I tried a few of the 21 recipes.I was just hoping for more than a "Peachy Cake" (one of the 21 recipes) book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars all about lifestyle changes
If you are looking to cure your migraines, you may want to check this book out.Since my sister has been getting migraines for the last 16 or so years, I have been telling her some of these things to get rid of them. Now that I suffer them as often as she does, I can't say that I have practiced what I preached, but I do believe that Zuzana Bic has the right idea of prevention through changes to your lifestyle.Basically, eat better, reduce stress, and get regular exercise. But she goes into detail to help the reader understand the physiology of the migraine disease and how changing your lifestyle will effect your migraines. If someone just told me that I needed to change these things, I would want to know how this would work. This book tells you.I do plan to follow her advise, and I like that it is not an elimination diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraines for 30 years, until reading this book!
This book is amazing! I had migraines for 30 years until reading this book. Over the years I tried every drug on the market, ending with Imitrex then Amerge. Even with Amerge I started half of all my days with a migraine. Now I have control over them and I no longer have them. Don't think that because you already eat well and are not overweight that the book won't help. I ate a good diet and wasn't overweight... I still had migraines and the book explained why. The Publishers Weekly review statement that "Their program, however, may seem too simplified and too general for longtime headache sufferers" is way off base! It's exactly what long term headache suffers need!

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works

5-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Make That Pain Go Away?
Mayo Clinic on Headache is the best resource I've seen for explaining what is known about headaches, how they originate, how to avoid them and how to reduce their duration and discomfort. The book's only weakness is that it came out before the research findings that COX-2 inhibitors (such as Vioxx) can be dangerous to your health. So be sure to discuss those products with your physician before taking them for headache relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memoir of medical hell
Paula Kamen was twenty-four when a contact lens insertion ignited an intense pain: over ten years later she still has the exact same headache. All In My Head: An Epic Quest To Cure An Unrelenting, Totally Unreasonable And Only Slightly Enlightening Headache is a memoir of medical hell, recounting ineffective remedies, medical frustration, and the problem of chronic pain sufferers. Included in her medical journey are interviews with over a dozen other sufferers of chronicle pain. 'Chronic Daily Headache' is a neurological disorder that affects only four or five percent of the population but its story hasn't been told before. Sufferers will find plenty to learn from here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Every Doctor Should Have
A friend of mine is a nurse working in a chronic pain ward in a major hospital. They get the cases where conventional doctors have given up. The patients typically have been through the ringer that Ms. Kamen describes, but often with a dependency on hard drugs as well. As Ms. Kamen says Western medicine has a strong tendency to depend on drugs over anything else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much useful chronic pain information, but a bit overly long and rambling
I am not a chronic headache or pain sufferer, although I know some people who are, so this book may not have meant as much to me as it would to those who do suffer with chronic pain.Nevertheless, I felt I learned a lot from my reading of it, and I could relate to many of the author's experiences with the medical world.I also enjoyed reading about various alternative medicine types that I will probably never try, but have been curious about! The book is well researched and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars You also need a GOOD Neurologist!
First this book isn't a Doctor (neurologist) so if you don't have one and suffer Migraines Please find a Doctor. I lucked out an found a Neurologist who also suffers Migraines. He was a God send. This Book refers back to what my Doctor told me. I am on medications but went from TWO "MIGRAINES" a week to one or less a month. When I was recommended this Neurologist by my Family Doctor, I had a Migraine for Three Weeks. My Life is now Liveable. This book helped confirm what my Neurologist said and in small bite sized pieces. The Doctor also prescribed of all thingsa Natural supplment that has not reduced the Severity but the Frequency. That is MIGRELIEF made by Quantum ([...]). What I eat seemed to make the Migraines worst. Preventing the onset of a Migraine started by me changing my Diet. The healthy things I ate were some of the triggers to onset. This book is helpful. Here is a site my Doctor uses ([...]) .I am not saying this book alone will heal anyone. Without a good Neurologist you might keep having Migraines. I am now at the point I can sell all my Migraine Books. I am living again and not hiding in a dark room waiting for the migraine to stop. Remenber a Banana that is ripe (Eatable and not bitter) can bring on headaches.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview & Guide
As a 20-year migraine sufferer, I must have 50 books on the subject including textbooks used in medical schools and costing $100 or more. This book gives a great overview and introduction to the person who is trying to find out where to start to take charge of their own medical treatment for Migraine and what questions to ask your Doc to see if he really knows what he is talking about. Most don't.This is a "First Step" book and not a book full of answers, but it will help you find more definitive information and save you wasting your time and money on a Doc who hasn't got a clue as to the discoveries about Migraine using Positive Emission Tomography since the late 1990's.Everything "taught" MDs about Migraine prior to about 1995 is just simply UNTRUE and this book will help you find sources for the latest material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too general, not enough information

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for the migraine sufferer
This book is one of the better ones I have read on the subject. It is more up to date than some of the other ones out there which is great if you're looking into some of the newer meds (both preventative and acute). The book gives the reader a good overview of migraine and it's history without going too deep into it that the reader stops reading before she gets to the "good stuff".This isn't one of those books that recommends a plan for getting rid of the migraines, rather it is a very informative one that touches on both drugs and alternative ways of treatment.I really like that it was written by two directors of a headache clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstandingreference for headache sufferers!!
An exceptional book!!! A definite "must have" for any headache sufferer.Drs. Young and Silberstein have produced an extremely well written book. "Migraine and Other Headaches" speaks directly to the average reader, with all essential terms spelled out in detail. The use of case studies, tables, and illustrations also aid the reader in their understanding of various concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars Not as casual as most on the topic
Drs. William Young and Stephen Silberstein's Migraine And Other Headaches is not as casual as most on the topic: it provides a medically-based analysis of the causes of different types of headaches, defines different migraine experiences, and differentiates between severe headache, tension headache, and migraine. While the reading in Migraine And Other Headaches isn't as easy as some self-help guides on the topic, the focus on uncovering the source of symptoms and various treatment options makes this medical handbook an excellent guide for sufferers seeking better care or more information. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Book
Dr, Diamond has put together a book full good information relating to childhood headaches. It seems the book is targeted at other Doctors as much as it is for parents.Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use.Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. Both books were helpfull

Headache and Your Child is "just what the doctor ordered."My child would double over in pain for no apparent reason. The doctors couldn't pinpoint any cause for the episodes. We had been searching for answers for over a year when we came back to the idea of possible migraines. In searching for information on abdominal migraines I kept coming across the name, Dr. Seymour Diamond. This book has helped us understand migraines and their causes as well as inform us about current treatment options that are available, everything from medication to biofeedback.Through the use of case studies, Dr. Diamond discusses up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatments. He reassures parents that while there are sometimes very serious underlying conditions, not every headache is an indicator of a brain tumor.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Informative
After years of suffering and going from one doctor to another I finally obtained the needed guidance from this book. Through its pages you are offered much information and the possibility of finding the proper avenue to health. Not all headaches are the same or stem from the same cause, therefore a cautionary but educated approach is the best route to take, and the authors with their experts (including a Naturopathic Physician)do so admirably. If one's objective is to rid or at least ameliorate their condition I strongly recommend the information compiled in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best thing since Excedrin Migraine
This tape was suggested to me by a coworker, and what a gift it has been!Combining this with my normal migraine routine significantly, actually dramatically, reduces the duration and intensity of my migraines. It also works wonders for those nasty tension headsches by easing my muscle tension. For the price it can't be beat, I would definately suggest it to anyone who wants to ease their pain.

4-0 out of 5 stars I didn't exactly find out about this book in a normal way.
I'm a fan of musician Adam Green, who is the son of the book's authors. I was on his website where it said "Adam's parents wrote a book together" with a link. So I click on it, and it turns out to be for headaches. I've gotten migranes ever since I as little (and I guess all of my loud music doesn't help). I ended up checking it out from the library and learned a lot about "managing my headaches."

5-0 out of 5 stars Patient of Dr. Green's
Dr. Mark Green treated me for migraines for about five years until I moved out of the area which made it very difficult to keep him as my neurologist (how sad for me!!).This book is written in the same style as how he manages his patients - nothing is set is stone, he is very aware of the many nuances of migraine as well as nuances of each patient's physiology, and he is always at the cutting edge of technology.I recommend this book, and Dr. Mark Green, highly. (Since I never was treated by his wife, Dr. Leah Green, I cannot offer the same comments, but would presume that her level of excellence matches her husband's)

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative
