5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book after being diagnosed as Bipolar II.For many years I've been diagnosed as having PMS, PMDD, and most forms of depression. It wasn't until I experienced a major depressive episode (suicidal), became euphoric while on antidepressants, and saw a good psychiatrist that I felt I was finally diagnosed properly.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for patietnts about bipolar spectrum disorders.
This is a very important book in these days when many depressed patients are placed on antidepressants after a too short 5 minute visit to their primary care doctor. The National Comorbidity Survey found that 15-20% of patients with depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum. These patients will not get well and stay well with antidepressants alone as their treatment. Dr Phelps explains clearly how to tell if your depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum and tells you about the treatments that can help. I have recomended Dr Phelps website at psycheducation.com for some years. I find the book to be just as good. There is very balanced presentation of all the controversial issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, if not a tad condesending
As a Bipolar II sufferer I agree with all that has been stated by the other reviewers. However this books greatest failing is in its definition of Bipolar II as "soft" bipolar. It is a seperate illness and should not be compared as such.Bipolar sufferes have greater highs, but bipolar II sufferers have greater lows (which also tend to last longer than bipolar I).

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and inspiring look at what it means to parent a disabled child
I've just listened to Mary Beth and Megan on the Diane Rehm Show and was very moved by their openness in describing their sons with Fragile X and their life with them, how they parent these sons, searched for the best education and medical care for them, and how they have found meaning and joy in their sons, despite their severe disabilities. Their book is an inspiration to all parents with disabled children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all Fragile X families!
This is the book that all of the families in the Fragile X community have been waiting to read. These letters between two women tell us the story of their personal griefs and triumphs; but they tell us so much more. The chapter called Dropping Bread Crumbs explains Fragile X for the layman more clearly than you've ever heard it explained before. We will all relate to the devastating news of the diagnosis in the chapter called Diagnosis and Dealing. And we will admire the courage of Kelly Randels' chapter on the hearbreak of facing an abortion. These women have the courage to tell us what we need to know; and the talent to keep you riveted throughout their journey in a world that has been defined for them by Fragile X.A extraordinary accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable, touching, educational, moving book
This is an incredible book.Mary Beth met Megan at a conference for parents of children with Fragile X, and decided to write to her.Mary Beth wrote to Megan, and in her letter, she quotes Margaret Mead:"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."And, indeed they have. They have also exchanged these simple, yet powerful letters. -- letters that talk about daily life, advice to each other, their family histories, the nature of Fragile X, the pain of Mother's Day, the nature of what is a home -- an endless array of interesting subjects. But these letters reveal so much more, namely, their courage, their disappointments, their tenacity, their truthfulness, their endless ability to love. It is a book that shows the human spirit at its best and is an inspiration to us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book!
Not only does this book deal with a very sensitive and difficult topic in a very intelligent, straightforward, sensitive, and psychologically healthymanner, but it teaches extremely valuable skills for parenting and coping with ANY troubles life may throw your way. The companion book for children does the very same thing, and very effectively teaches children coping skills in an encouraging, realistic, and safe way. Both books excel in highlighting and addressing differences between the ways adults process thoughts and emotions and the way children do this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for an unfortunate topic
When my husband was diagnosed with cancer our children were 5 and 7 years old. This book gave us the tools to use to talk to them about cancer.Illness, chemotherapyand even death were topics that we suddenly had to confront.Dr. Harpham's book provided insight in dealing with a frigtening topic in a calm and reasuring manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Intelligence of Nature, New Medicine and the meaning and resolution of illness
This book is a translation of the author's French language book about the concepts and implications of the "New Medicine" generated by research of Dr. Hamer. The ideas are well presented for the layperson, with numerous analogies and metaphors. The basic ideas are revolutionary to the existing paradigms which dominate medicine. In the biodecoding process of this field it is understood that psychological conflict lies at the root of illnesses, with observed symptoms being the mind-body system's tool to deal with a conflict. Many case studies are described and the author reports how Dr. Hamer and others have used brain scans to correlate how these psychological/emotional issues are communicated through brain relays to associated organs and tissues. This book is an excellent introduction to these ideas. Some interesting philosophical and metaphysical conclusions are offered in this book, with these being in my view the only areas of weakness to the overall presentation.Soul memory is presumed in this book to be ancestral memory (rather than an additional layer of memories/programming from incarnations that exist independent of one's family lineage, the idea I consider most plausible). The discussion of destiny seems incomplete and paradoxical, though it does stir thinking about the nature of how circumstances come into being and how shifts in consciousness and awareness can shift one's path and experience.Using illness as a catalyst for transformation and resolution of underlying psychospiritual issues is an important model for those seeking to understand the healing process. The author acknowledges that a broad spectrum of therapies may assist in this process, while he shows how "detective work" of some sort is vital to facilitating genuine healing and resolution of illness.I think this is a good book for the public to read, as it takes ideas of people like Louise Hay into a deeper extent of illumination without going into excessive detail; details of decoding processes and mapping of the mind-body system are presented in workshops for professionals which can be found by searching online at websites mentioned in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best book (so far) on a difficult subject
This is the fifth in a new series of instructional volumes sponsored by the National Genealogical Society, and when I read and reviewed the first four in September 2004, I was very impressed. The authors all were well known and trustworthy and their treatment of old subjects (such as basic research principles) and not so old (setting up a genealogy web site) was generally quite well done. But this one is somewhat different. The subject of "genetic genealogy" is still very much unknown territory to almost all genealogists, even the professionals. It's not even a "social science," so one has to acquire a certain amount of new background knowledge even before delving into it. This author is also less likely to be known to most genealogists outside his own specialty: He's a medical doctor, a Section Chief at the National Institutes of Health -- although he has also been president of the Prince George's County Genealogical Society and chairs the NGS committee on Family Health and Heredity, so he certainly can't be called a beginner. Personally, I've been "doing genealogy" for more than three decades, but my background is in history, library science, and archival management, with no training and very little experience in the life sciences. Over the past few years, I've read dozens of articles in all sorts of journals on the subject of applying recent breakthroughs in DNA mapping to family lineages, but even though I've been intrigued by the possibilities, the result has generally been to confuse myself even further. I'm pleased to say that Shawker has supplied an antidote to my ignorance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Longevity Depends More On You Than On HGH
HGH:AGE-REVERSING MIRACLE by Rita Elkins is fairly typical of the recent spate of books that details the promised land of eternal youth. The problem is not that Ms. Elkins is deliberately telling untruths. In fact, much of what she reports is pretty straightforward and backed by current research.Ms. Elkins implies strongly that the benefits of HGH--lean body muscle, dramatic weight loss, suppleness of skin, improved sex life--are all based on the most optimistic of events, namely that one has done his homework and has chosen the HGH most suitable for him, that he takes this HGH under a doctor's knowledge and care, that he combines taking HGH with a sensible diet, moderate exercise, and a low-stress life style. The glowing claims for HGH as noted by one reviewer for this book on Amazon.Com may be in fact true for that person, yet such claims are anecdotal.Perhaps those who are most satisfied with HGH and have encountered the most amazing results are also the ones who were most predisposed to success in the first place. My recommendation is that books such as this one ought to be only the starting point towards an HGH education.HGH:AGE-REVERSING MIRACLE will put you on what may the right path, but whether you stay on it depends more on you than on a little white pill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unreal Results
I had heard of HGH before, but was hesitant about a few things.First, I had heard it could have potentially harmful side effects. Also, there was much confusion about what I could actually expect from such a product.Rita's booklet provided me with the hardcore answers I was looking for.Backed by medical journals, I learned the difference in HGH and HGH secretagogue.I was also finally able to understand just what benefits such a product can provide. After reading it, I was convinced to try the product with dramatic results. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book should be much easier to find. The information is badly needed. If it were more accessable more people would see the symtoms and perhaps get better diagnosis. All doctors need this in their offices. My gastrointerologist said he'd have to do some research on this!!! He's suppose to be the "specialist"!This has helped me understand that with proper diagnosis and treatment this disease need not be a serious problem. Well written. A must read. Many thanks to Dr. Phatak for writing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid information for people with this problem
Finally, there is definitive information out there, instead of just people passing word of mouth warnings. This books is worth gold for people of Celtic ancestry. I was diagnosed with HHC, laughingly called the Celtic Curse because it can strike people of Scottish and Irish ancestry, there was not a lot of information out there about it.One in four people can carry the gene that causes the body to store too much iron in the deep muscle tissue, kidneys, liver and heart. It can be fatal if not caught. This book helps those find a way to live with this problem.5-0 out of 5 stars The Iron Disorders Institute Guide to Hemochromatosis
At long last, a single source of invaluable information about diagnosis and treatment of Hemochromatosis along with many personal trials and tribulations of those who have experienced the frustrations of obtaining an appropriate diagnosis."The Iron Disorders Institute's Guide to Hemochromatosis" is a tremendously welcome resource.I was so impressed I purchased 7 additional copies for my 5 adult children and 2 of the RNs who conduct my frequent phlebotomies.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The genetics of both common childhood and adult disorders are all discussed
There is no better place for the concerned parent to turn to for scientific and medical insights on their questions about genetics than Doctor Scheuerle's Understanding Genetics: A Primer For Couples And Families. Given that one in every 100 Americans is born with a serious genetic disorder, issues are more clearly defined in modern times, requiring Understanding Genetics for a basic primer. Chapters survey the science of genetics, how it works, and what things doctors can change. The genetics of both common childhood and adult disorders are all discussed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation
On page 34, second paragraph, the author states unequivically, that two mutations of H63D do not cause HH.The author is way behind the times. My father was genetically tested in 1999 for mutations that cause HH.He had been diagnosed with HH in 1998.His results showed that he had two mutations of H63D.In case anyone questions the results, the tests were done at Kimball Genetics in Denver, Colorado (800-320-1807).The genetics counselor who spoke with my father about his results said that a year earlier (1998), his diagnosis of HH would have been thrown out because it was thought that you could only get HH from the C282Y mutation. In the last five years, genetics research has discovered more mutations that may cause or affect iron overload. The Iron Disorders Institute's book, Guide to Hemochromatosis, speaks about H63D causing hemochromatosis, and the copyright on that book is 2001.The author of this book is inexcusably behind the times. He is at the University of Colorado, yet Kimball Genetics in Denver, Colorado, had information five years ago that disproves what he put in his book. The Iron Disorders Institute had information two years before this book was published that disproves what he put in his book.Readers beware!!Please research what you read in this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars ok on facts, light on sense
The medical aspects are dealt with fairly accessibly, but troubles me is the author's tone throughout the book - patronising, and his tendency to make statements that belie an extraordinary ignorance of human beings. What kind of weirdo would write a sentence like "....of course, the death of a child is always tragic, even when it is expected"?

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't start infertility treatment until you read this!
I can't believe that anyone let me start the process of infertilitytreatment (beyond the clomid stage) without telling me to read this.Ifound it on my own when having to decide whether my only chance to have achild, egg donation, was right for my husband and myself.I only WISHsomeone had told me about it sooner. It would have helped me think aboutall of "this" in a not so crazy way. It's technical, but, thoseof us who go through infertility procedures know more about the gettingpregnant process than most books and online souces give us credit for. These authors treat us like intelligent human beings.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wise book !
As an infertility specialist, I'd heartily recommend this book to all infertile couples - and their doctors as well. The forte of this book is the superb way in which emotional issues have been discussed.

5-0 out of 5 stars expert guidance
My husband and I have been struggling with infertility for six years and have read several books on the subject.Choosing Assisted Reproduction is the most comprehensive, informative and challenging book that we have come across. We were both relieved to see that the authors raise some of theethical questions that we are struggling with. They do so in a verysensitive way, always respecting the difficult choices that infertilitypatients face in this new world of baby making. I recommend this bookto anyone going through infertility, as well as to their families andfriends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent scientific instructional
How The Human Genome Works by Edwin H. McConkey (Professor Emeritus, Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, University of Colorado) is a basic and introductory genetics primer especially written for students of the health sciences. It is a meticulously accurate survey of the natural history of the human genome, including mechanisms of mutation, genetic diseases, the role of the genome in medical practice, and so much more, which will prove fascinating and accessible to non-specialist general readers with an interest in human genetics as well. An excellent scientific instructional, explicit in its point-by-point detail, How The Human Genome Works is a superb introduction to one of the most inherently fascinating and quickly evolving of the biological sciences today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Positive and informative
Written by an Australian pediatrician, this book is both positive and informative. The book presents a great deal of material but does it in an clear and accessible style . The author is extremely optimistic about the future of people with Down syndrome and this optimism shows in his writing. The material covered includes early childhood development, school, adolescence, and adulthood. Laws in the US, UK, and Australia are covered.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good overview
I read this book shortly after my son was born with Down Syndrome. It was not as "mushy" as the Stray-Gunderson book.It has wonderfulinformation on the joys of raising a child with down syndrome, while givingvery specific information on potential health problems and what to be sureyour pediatrician is aware of.I liked the fact that he recomends that theparent is the child's biggest advocate, and that we prepare ourselves forthat role. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars optimistic view
I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt like it presented a positive view of living with Down Syndrome. I read it to children tooin order to educate them on what it is like to have Down Syndrome and how they are very much like them.It is good to get the perspective directly from the individuals involved. I think the authors did a great job of presenting the material and the pictures were great.I would also be a good book for a school library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Lifesaver
I thought I was alone in this world with Celiac until I read this book. This gave me hope and inspiration that there are other people inflicted with the same disorder, and are able to continue day to day life.I would highly recommend to everyone with celiac to read this book.It has really made a difference in my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but...
It was interesting to read the stories of those who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease collected in this volume. My concern is that the author states that people in New Zealand have "routine screening" for the disease (page 91). This is not the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening
This book opened my eyes to many symptoms I've dealt with that I came to believe as "normal".It also helped me convince family members to get tested and start living healthier lives. Many thanks to the authorfor the time and effort she put into this wonderful book. ... Read more
