4-0 out of 5 stars hyst or miss
A good book if you need to feel pampered, can be annoying if you are looking for real info, and have to read through fantasy stories of pillow police and kings to get to the info. Leads you to a wonderful website where real info and follow up emails of expectations and week by week progress. Not a difficult to read reference. I highly recommend this for the "just after discharge" reading. But, you will need more substance for deep questions on hormones etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just What She Needed
Very light hearted, positive, tales of the before and after Hyst experience.Good for both him and her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Inside Information
I found this book filled with information that I've not found anywhere else. Its format is a mix of reproduced emails, question and answers by a variety of people addressing the same question, and short pieces on a great many topics.

This book was a true eye-opener for me! I recommend this book to everyone I know who has Endo. I have used it's wisdom enthusiastically, and with fabulous results. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great information!
I am 26 and was recently diagnosed with fibroids. This book offered helpful information that calmed my initial fears. The dietary guidance should be considered by all women.I especially enjoyed the recipes and exercise information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Susan Lark
I am a 35-year-old African American female and have suffered from fibroids for over 7 years. Almost everyone in my family does to some degree. Various quacks have prescribed painkiller after painkiller. Then finally I had a surgery and conceived, but lost our child at 18 weeks.A year later, a fibroid was back with an ovarian cyst.I did not want more surgery, so during the holiday I order this book and started the plan.During my recent ultrasound, examine less than 3 weeks later the small fibroid was gone and the cyst partial collapsed (part fluid it was solid) and shrunk. I feel great and whole for the first time in a long time.Thank you for having the courage to show us a different way.The book was balanced with options and I will recommend it to all I know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
This book is written in a friendly and easy to read manner. It has a lot of information to absorb, but is what every woman with Endo should know.If you want to learn more and want to follow the guidelines provided then I strongly recommend this book.In only three months my life has changed.I understand my body like never before and am excited that following the suggestions in this book will lead me to my dream - pregnancy. After having purchased numerous books on Endo, it was nice to have one that finally answered my questions and was enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
After three years of infertility due to endometriosis, we had given up hope. After eight months on this diet we were expecting our first child with no medical intervention.Even if you aren't trying to conceive, this diet DOES help you feel a lot better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Explanations Refreshing
I've been reading this book since before I had surgery last week and am going to give the diet a try.The explanations of unbalanced hormones and lack of certain vitamins/minerals causing my symptoms and horrific PMS make alot of sense.I dropped out of biology in college because it seemed to be over my head, but this book explained body chemistry and cell production in a way that I can relate.Through the nutritional advice in this book, I am hoping to get pregnant and not have to have surgery again. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars *Echos the disappointing sentiments*
I was excited to find a big thick book dedicated to endo.It seemed as if it quite possibly had to have everything that I needed to know about this disease.Wrong.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book bills itself as a "complete reference for taking charge of your health," but much of it reads more like a compendium of personal anecdotes and rants (toxic chemicals are bad! very bad!) than a practical reference work. The information on drug therapies is potentially useful as a starting point, but for more substantial information on commonly used medications it repeatedly refers the reader to Ballweg's earlier "Endometriosis Sourcebook" (presumably to save space -- yet this book devotes 15 pages to reprinting a series of badly drawn cartoons from the earlier volume.) The section on surgery is padded with first-person narratives and fretful digressions about certification of surgeons and the risk of getting accidentally poked with a trocar or poisoned with hidden PVCs. The book is slanted toward alternative treatments and diet modification, with an inordinate amount of space devoted to a diet supposed to cure yeast allergies. While nutrition is obviously important to general health, the evidence presented for the success of this diet in treating endometriosis is anecdotal (and some of the anecdotes themselves are highly dubious or even comical, such as the letter from a woman who claims to have discovered that she is highly allergic to "grains" -- in which category she includes potatoes!). Given that the book is quick to point out the flaws in conventional medical treatment, it seems a bit irresponsible not to give equal time to the damage that desperate women can do to themselves with self-treatment and "natural" remedies. There are as many bad acupuncturists and quack nutritionists out there as there are bad gynecologists. What we really need is more solid, serious medical research, not more miracle diets or personal tales of suffering and empowerment. If you already own previous books by Ballweg and the Endometriosis Association and like their approach, you might be satisfied with this book, but if you're looking for a definitive reference on this agonizing and perplexing disease, you'll likely be disappointed. I certainly was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful Endo Reference Guide
My doctor specializing in endo treatment gave me this book, and I have found it very useful. I also have Mary Lou Ballweg's previous endo book, which is also great.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Endo books out there!
I checked out every endometriosis book that my library had, this was by far the best. If I could only choose one book to buy before surgery, or right after being diagnosed, this is the one. I appreciated that the author is a well known expert and not just a fellow Endometriosis sufferer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Had in Mind
I agree with the reviewers who mention the "company line" behind this book.I personally was looking for something that would help me figure out what to do on a personal level to assist my body in fighting endo, but this was more of a conventional medicine read, and hard to get through at that. I recommend "Endometriosis - A Key to Healing with Nutrition", if this is what you're looking for.Did enjoy the cartoons, though!

4-0 out of 5 stars The definitive reference for patients with endometriosis
Anyone with endometriosis should own this book, and it's a great addition to doctors' libraries, too. It is a definitive enough source to bring to doctors appointments, comprehensive enough to give you an understanding of the disease, and personal enough to be readable. I don't agree 100% with the treatments and theories in the book, nor do I find sufficient information on individual treatments (allopathic or alternative).
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Encouraging, and Informative!!!
This is an excellent resource for women with Endo and for those who love them. I was encouraged by reading other women's stories to remind me that I am not alone. My husband has also learned a lot from the book and has become more sympathetic. It is a relatively easy read and is the best Endo book that I have found. The book also has a sense of humor which is essential for anyone with Endo. My only wish is that the book would have gone more in depth concerning alternative methods for treatment. Overall, an awesome resource! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No thank you
I bought this book after being diagnosed with endometriosis. In my case, the diagnosis had been completely unexpected and I was looking for some answers in regards to how this disease would effect my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
Recently diagnosed with endometriosis, I went searching for a book that would help me get a handle on the disease. This is a good reference guide, giving clear, concise and up-to-date information. It's well-balanced, providing information about medical and alternative options; it does not advocate one particular course of action but aims to educate the reader about the options that are out there. I am very pleased with my purchase and recommend the book highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for all Concerned with the Disease

4-0 out of 5 stars What Nobody Talks About
As a retired nurse, I think the vast number of women who undergo removal of their uterus are usually well informed of the surgical procedure, the possible risks, and anatomical changes, but only a rare few are prepared for the hormonal frenzy that follows. Patti Pfeiffer's humorous--and sometimes heartbreaking--account of her surgery and the weeks that followed is a must read, not only for those who have had, or will have, a hysterectomy but for their spouses, too. Even those not involved in this medical dilemma will be amused by Ms. Pfeiffer's journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bearing the Big H
My wife and I purchased "Bearing the Big H", at one of Pattis' book signings.I was the first to read it.I was pleasently surprised and read it in a couple of nights. The " big H", is not something a man is normally knowledgeable about but it can drastically affect your relationship with loved ones.Ignorance is defenitely not bliss. My review?I've decided to purchase additional books for my parents(in their 80's), sister, and brother for Christmas gifts.Loved the book Patti!

Living with this disease is painful. This book gave me more insight than I had before. Each chapter was helpful.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough to "cope" if disease is severe and chronic
I was diagnosed with endometriosis over 10 years ago and have since had 7 major surgeries and countless minor ones.I picked this book up after major surgery #5, desperate for help. This book didn't cut it.Granted, by the time I read this book, my knowledge of endo (from medical and general literature) was better than most gyns (by their own admissions).I bought this book anyway, hoping the "coping" advice would be helpful. I ended up skimming it, finding little of value, and setting it on a bookshelf to gather dust.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy for your Dollar!
I was diagnosed with Endometriosis in 2001 & had my first surgery that year. Toward the latter part of 2002, I started to be in chronic pain for this disease. I'll make a long story short. (If you want to see the long story, go to my review about Jennifer Lewis' book that I think is medically inaccurate). This book is compelling, thorough and most of all, helpful. It was a book I *SHOULD* have had in 2001. Since dealing with my pain, this book has opened my eyes to therapies I can use, how I can deal with ALL the aspects of this disease, and how it affects my loved ones. This is a great book because it talks to you through a whole person concept--- not just dealing with the reproductive Endometriosis, but it deals with all of the areas surrounding it, too, like emotions, finances, and so on. It doesn't talk down to you, and won't make you feel like you're in a pity party, but gives you tools to try to cope and even recover. Check this book out. You'll be glad you did. ... Read more

Although this book is short, it is quite technical into the differing ways that Chinese medicine views women's health conditions, such as endometriosis.I would recommend that you know a little about the wayChinese medicine looks at deficiencies and stagnations in the variousmeridians before delving into this book.Otherwise, this information mightsound repetitive and be difficult to dissect into usable portions. 1-0 out of 5 stars The worst book written to date
This book is horrible.Has errors (such as stating there are FIVE Stages of Endo, when there are only FOUR), is nothing but a "look at me, look at me, aren't I wonderful," type of book. Some of the information is suspiciously familiar from other works, but without the credit being given, such as what happened on her website not terribly long ago.1-0 out of 5 stars Coping skills? Nope.Medically sound? Not. Pity Party? YES.
This book is not medically sound.I posted a while back (March, 2003) when I first read it.Since then I have mentioned the ideas to my reproductive endocrinologist that Jennifer states in her book, and -*JUST* as another reader experienced- I was told "that's not true". 5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU for this wonderful book!
Thank you for this wonderful book! My daughter brought it home to have my husband and I read so we could better understand what she was going through and by the time we were finished we were completely informed. It was so easy to make notes and to tell that the author had genuinely gone through the exact same things she describes endo is all about and that made it so much easier to understand and empathize with her. My daughter wants another book for her birthday and I've already ordered a second copy. Good luck Ms. Lewis!Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of hard-earned cash
i bought this book hoping that it would give me new information about my alternatives. i was specifically interested in avoiding hormonal treatments for endometriosis altogether, through dietary change and acupuncture. iexpected to get some solid information from this book. however, much of theinformation presented by the author contained errors, and aside from abrief description of each type of alternative medicine she said nothing ofconsequence. most of the book consisted of peoples' personal stories, whichwould have been fine had they been balanced by some further explanations orhad any scientific basis. however, some of the people appeared to beself-diagnosed, some had many different conditions being treated at once, and others were using traditional treatments in addition to theiralternative therapies. so all in all i learned nothing i didn't alreadyknow, and i regret spending my money on this small volume. i am much moresatisfied with _the endometriosis sourcebook_, which i also purchased. thedifference in price was negligible but the difference in quality wasastounding.

The information in this book is helpful in understanding that there are treatments available that your medical doctor may not be aware of.Read it along with The Endometriosis Sourcebook and plan to take charge of yourbody.
