5-0 out of 5 stars A health secret you can't afford to miss!
My son was diagnosed with severe reflux, eczema and food allergies. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to research probiotics. ALL of this information is contained right inside this powerful book. I found an absolute wealth of information and leads to help me treat my sons severe allergies. Many of the suggestions in her book have saved us time and money. And one of the most important parts is where the author helps you select a probiotic, since MUCH of what is on the market is worthless, mislabled or DEAD bacteria. People are starting to become aware of the benefits of probiotics (as other countries have known for so many years) but they are throwing their money away on products that do not even contain the strains of bacteria listed on the label or even any live bacteria at all. Although I bought the book with interest in my son's situation, there are so many other conditions discussed and I have lent this book out more times than I can count. It is also very suitable for physicians and I have had one friend use it to discuss her probiotic use during pregnancy (to prevent allergy in her baby) and I just bought another copy to give to our pediatrician (who also recommends certain reputable brands of probiotics to help treat behavioral issues) I would highly recommend this book. It will save you hundreds of hours of research and you will think of many friends and relatives who can benefit from the research it contains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable information on probiotics
Probiotics are products containing bacteria that are beneficial to health. Digestive problems and allergies are increasing in developed countries and much of the source of these difficulties appears to lie with a poor mixture of bacteria in the intestine. Taking probiotics to remedy the imbalance is a popular approach among the general public, but very little reliable information is available.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others
"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
Jeffrey May is a clear, concise communicator. He offers specific, helpful information.Easy to read and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps
This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars information that every asthmatic should know about
I loved this book. Simple, consise, practical and honest. Look at your lifstyle and make simple changes to your breathing. You know you are on the right track when you feel a lot better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for asthmatics
Buteyko breathing and helpful accounts of diet and exercise- ground breaking stuff. I would advise readers to do their research on Buteyko especially if they have breathing related problems. The site of the book is http://www.asthma-care.com/ - look at the history, conditions, and scientific evidence from the New Zealand Medical Journal and Australia Medical Journal. It is incredible that this approach has not being adopted into mainstream medication - maybe this will happen but will surely take time. You can take the first steps now- read this book ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, good
I previously purchased this book, used it successfully, and then lent it(much marked up) to someone (don't remember who)and now I need it again. I didn't follow the program 100%, but it did work. I was on allergy shots, and had asthma symptoms at certain times of the year depending on what was blooming. This book worked for me, and I have tried a lot of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the point
Another book that I felt had very little to offer that was not already out there. For the past fifteen years, I coughed every morning and night with disrupted sleeping and resulting fatigue. It was a breathing method called Buteyko that changed this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intriging
I read this book with very great interest. It's the most promising and sensible approach I've seen to addressing the allergy and digestive problems I've been having for many years, which my own doctors have by trying ineffectively to treat by drugging the symptoms into submission.I intend to try the program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Conventional management- we have heard it all before
Asthmatics are now better informed and can research the effects of medication, allergies etc very easily. This book has nothing to offer to HELP people with asthma. It adopts a very narrow approach specifically using medication.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great first asthma book
I was skeptical of the name. However, I leafed through it (and many other asthma books) in a brick and mortar store before I bought this book. And I am so grateful! It's easy to read, but doesn't shy away from the technical and biological concepts you should know.It has nice diagrams for those of us who need the visuals to understand somewhat complicated biology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, genuine, and doable
Asthma is serious; 15 people die of asthma each day yet many people don't take their symptoms seriously. Asthma for Dummies is both serious and yet conversational. It's practical, genuine and doable. It's got something of value for anyone interested in predicting, preventing, and responding to symptoms proactively.

2-0 out of 5 stars Asthmatics- this is not the solution
I read Richard Firsheins book with much interest. Yes, it is well written and contains factual information but I found my asthma was as bad after reading it as it was before. The book did little to improve my condition - it did not reverse it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong theory?
Although I greatly admire Dr. Firschein for his initiative, my experience with asthma has taught me to be skeptical of the theory of correcting breathing presented in the book.If you consider how a normal person takes a natural deep breath you will see that the chest is vigorously expanded and the upper abdomen is drawn in and upward (Gray's Anatomy). It therefore seems highly arguable that an asthmatic simply "gets stuck" in his frantic effort to take a deep inspiration, and that the upward straining of the shoulders so typical of an attack is not pathological and the deep breath should be taught by correctly learning from a healthy breather in all details. Also, a healthybreather tends to restrict the inflow of air during the deep inspiration with his lips and/teeth.

5-0 out of 5 stars New kind of medical book
This is a different kind of medical book from any I've ever looked at.The rest are predominantly lists and checklists, and dull as well. This one not only dispenses very helpful advice but gets inside the heads of children who have these conditions, their parents, and explains theory and practice behind the medical specialty itself. Some of the anecdotes about how non-specialists can botch treatment are shocking. Some if it is also quite funny. Also, it's nice to read a book by doctors who still clearly love the practice of medicine and doing good for people, in spite of all the changes that have happened to the profession in recent years. This book should make many lives better and even save some. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a BLESSING!!!
This is a tremedous book for anyone that thinks they might have asthma or if they actually have been diagnosed with asthma. My 22 month old was recently diagnosed with asthma and even though I'm a college graduate I was having some trouble making sense of all the medications and reading the signs when he was having trouble since he's too young for a peak flow meter. This book covers it all in great deal and teaches you how to really manage your asthma whether you can use a peak flow meter or not. A wonderful book and worth far more than the list price. The author is actually an asthma specialist and indicated you can get the information in this book from your doctor, but it would take 10 hours. It would be difficult for you to remember and you would probably not want to pay for it! I think that is a good description of this book! It goes along exactly with what my doctor has been saying, only presents it in an organized manner along with some forms in the back to keep a daily diary and treatment plan. EXCELLENT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for asthmatics
I have read a number of books and articles on asthma. This is by far the most comprehensive, up to date and it is easy to understand, too. I checked a copy from my library but it is so good that I am going to purchase it for my personal reference library as well as my child's school nurse. This book even has short section explaining cough-variant asthma, which is what both me and my son have...this is a little known type of asthma which in my case was mis-diagnosed for 35 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
Read Plaut's book shortly after my oldest son had his first asthma attackwhich nearly resulted in respiratory failure.Plaut's book is by far mybest single source for useful information about causes, prevention andtreatment.I consult it regularly and highly recommend it for anyone withor concerned about asthma. It was a lifesaver in my family!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beginning
This titles is actually an outdated text on the subject of what Frolov's Respiration Training Device allows the human body to do. It was translated into English years ago - and translated not very well at that being in Russia - but it gets the point across. Does it tell the truth? Does Frolov's Training Device actually do what is claimed. In a word, YES.
3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good idea, Book poorly edited
Frolov's system relies on a small plastic training device, the FRTD-01 (Frolov Respiration Training Device---not included with the book) to teach a new form of breathing. The training device is filled with a little water, which increases the pressure during both inhalation and exhalation. While using the device, a person is encouraged to prolong the duration of the exhalation, gradually increasing the length of the exhalation and, therefore, increasing the time between breaths. This increase is undertaken very gradually and is intended to be sustainable in the sense that it becomes possible to continue functioning comfortably with fewer and fewer breaths taken each minute (during training).Eventually, this extended breathing pattern is transplanted from training and used through all or most of a person's waking activity. It should be noted that extremely low breathing rates are said to be obtained by experienced practitioners, who might breathe (in some circumstances) only once every several minutes.Read more

This book is full of good, medically based general information. I would recommend it for someone who needs an introduction to the subject that is fairly detailed but easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please add magnesium
There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, and biased....
This book is probably important for all of us to have in our library, since it's very complete and comprehensive in explaining what asthma is and what kinds of treatments are available - although a book like this goes out of date the second it is printed. There are already a number of new things available for asthmatics that have come since the last edition. If you are in the care of a doctor, you will ask much more informed questions - and understand the drugs you are on - after reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great help .
This book was very helpful to me in being an informed health care consumer for my child. I especially found the detailed medication section helpful. My son's asthma had progressed from being mild to moderate and the thorough review of current medication options was very helpful. I purchased the book basedon the fact that a pulmonary nurse clinician had recommended it. I am a nurse practicioner in women's health and value the recommendation from another practicioner who is involved in educating her patients regarding their conditon. This book really helped me in making informed decisions along with my son's pediatrician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent dealing with asthma should have this!!
I have never reviewed a book before despite always reading the reviews before buying a book.No book has ever changed my life the way that this one has!!My son was diagnosed in March 2003 and his doctor thought his asthma would just be something that was tacked onto the end of a cold and nothing more.Unfortunately he seemed to always have a new cough (classic asthma symptom).I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the disease and becoming a patient advocate for my son.Having this book is a gift!It has changed our lives. We were scared and now we're prepared! My son has not had the cough since we started the program in June. We've been using the recommended daily monitoring and preventive meds and life is grand. If you're dealing with asthma, BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed
This book was just what we needed to help us understand and control our son's asthma. Dr. Farber explains things in a clear and easy to understand manner. I keep this book accessible at all times. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has a child suffering from asthma. It's great for first time parents of asthmatic children and for those who have had years of experience as well. ...
