Helpful Advice
This book has some very helpful information about the balance one must maintain between omega 3 and omega 6 oils. I have been living with ulcerative colitis for 10 years now. It has helped me a great deal after only one month. I urge anyone with IBD to read this book on this balance or get the info. somewhere else. You will likely benefit from it.

The New Eating Right for a Bad Gut : The Complete Nutritional Guide to Ileitis, Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Inflammatory Bowel
This book has been very helpful. After being diganosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and having a bad time with it, getting off steroids has been difficult. I found the information here to make the most sense of any thing I've read.I've been following the advise with some modifications.(Having some lean, organic beef now and then seems to be fine... for me...eveyone is different.)I've really noticed a difference in how I feel.The idea of treating IBD by reducing inflammation is right on track.But, the book is very redundant, and can be a bit confusing at times.

Easier Recipes Needed
Hello-I really enjoyed reading this book. Heather's personal story and advice for IBS suffers is useful (at least for me). Although she does lay out the basic nutritional information on fiber and other trigger foods. Her recipes are far too complicated, I'm a graduate student with very little time for cooking. So the recipes are just too time consuming. I need easier and faster recipes. Some of the breakfast ideas fit into my lifestyle, but the dinners are complicated, although they sound delicious. Perhaps someday I will have time to try them. If Heather (the author) is reading this, please write a recipe book with easier and faster IBS safe recipes. I'd definately buy it! Thanks!

New lease on life!!
The information in this book has restored my health!!Not only do I feel better I have lost 13 lbs. in 5 weeks.This food program, plus the peppermint oil gel caps, allows my food intake to stay with me and I am benefiting nutritionally.I am so thankful that Heather Van Vorous shared this information.I haven't felt this well in three years!!

Eating for IBS- A Review
EATING FOR IBS is an excellent source of useful information for persons diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).The author (an IBS sufferer herself) writesclearly and with the compassion and understanding of a person who had lived with the symptoms of IBS for years before a correct diagnosis was made.However, she was not provided withinformation about managing the symptoms on a daily basis.On her own shedevised a regimen of safe foods, herbal teas and a natural soluble fiber supplement that (from my personal experience) works to effectively manage IBS symptoms.She identifies certain foodsthat can cause problems and should be avoidedor eaten very carefully,for instance with soluble fiber. The discussion of the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber and their effect on the digestive system and IBSis the most informative and thorough of anything I have read.

Digestive issues? Read on...
I thought this book was really helpful for those who are stuggling with their weight or have digestive issues but are unclear why.
Caveat Emptor
I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).
Easy, useful reference
The book recaps material from other authors,such as Sherry Rogers, M.D. and other experts, in a handy and straight forward way. Having read numerous more complicated books while struggling with fatigue and brain fog, this one was a breath of fresh air (pun intended). This book is highly informative. It describes digestion/ stomach acid process, ideal acid level(s), numerous disorders / symptoms of too low of stomach acid, and why ACID BLOCKERS are actually TOXIC / DANGEROUS (like Prilosec / Tums) to ingest regularly or indefinitely.

Tremendously Helpful
I am only one month into the candida killing and rotational diet and by following the guidelines in this book I am already experiencing a dramatic improvement in the acid reflux that I had. The book is easy to understand and sheds a lot of light on candida,leaky gut,food allergies and MCS which I have been battling for approx. 20 years. I am so thankful to the author for sharing her knowledge and expertise to help people like me to help themselves, naturally without the use of drugs! I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from digestive problems and has felt helpless to find a cure. It has been a definite answer to prayer!

Rated as excellent.Sherry Rogers MD has a gift for teaching that both the professional and nonprofessional can understand.Any of Dr. Rogers books are terrific and, if applied, can greatly exhance health and may even save it.

Natural relief to heartburn.
This book was the most informative of all the books I could get my hands on. It didn't beat around the bush about the negatives of over the counter and prescription medicines as treatments.What I have found is that the natural way (herbs, diet modification, and lifestyle as well as sleeping positions)have a longer lasting and more beneficial (healthy) effect. Anything that harms me while trying to help me is not something I want. This books educates the reader how not to do this. I have a degree in Dietetics, and was skeptical at first, trusting good old fashion medicine, but I have changed my opinion altogether. Shockingly helpful to most patients ...
It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex.This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs!As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies."All our bodies are different.Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate.Others to orange juice.Some to red wine.Some to apple juice.To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it.This book will help properly identify.

don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux
Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies.Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have.You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself.Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money.It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area.Don't buy this book!I wish I hadn't.

the other white matter
Michael Gershon is apparently the father of neurogastroenterology, the science behind the "brain" that resides in the digestive system.This second brain is just like the first one, being composed of the same types of cells and using the same neurotransmitters.Consequently both brains are affected by many of the same drugs and diseases, even though they operate largely independently.
A wonderful and fascinating read....
Michael Gershon is a gifted writer and equally gifted scientist.He takes the world of the gut and explains its workings in great detail eliminating historical misunderstandings and common misperceptions along the way.
peristaltic reflex or peristaltic cognition?
This has been a challenging book to read, but well worth the effort.It is a peculiar mix of memoir and introductory textbook on the enteric (gut) system. I found myself woefully unprepared to consume the text.Gershon has tried to write for the lay reader, but that lay reader had better be comfortable with organic chemistry. Despite the jargon, Gershon's enthusiasm is infectious.This would be a great gift for any pre-med student in need of inspiration.

A lesson long forgotten on the importance of bowel care
Wow! This book is an eye opener. I'm saying this because most of us have never heard about the teachings in this book, although probably our grand-grandparents still knew it. The modern society and lifestyle made us neglect the laws of the Nature when taking care of our own body, to our own peril. Unfortunately, these days not even the doctors are aware of the importance of bowel care, even though until the 40's- 50's this was a well known fact. Probably after that the discovery of modern "cures" - such as antibiotics - and the growing power of pharmaceutical companies pushed these away from the medical agenda. Almost a book
This is a collection of meandering thoughts on bowel health. It would have been useful if the thoughts had been documented and discussed in more than a personal remembrance form. The diet might work, but you can't tell why from this presentation. The pictures are gross, but some of them can't be real. If you want to know if its any good just look at the number of used copies for sale. If its as good as the reviews why would so many people want to sell it?

Excellent information on Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Though many sources recommend common supplements for FMS & CFIDS, Ms. Lipski suggests much higher doses and a few unique items.Taking these during a flare up is very effective at reducing my symptoms and shortening the flare.Stress is my main trigger and my body burns through nutrients like there's no tomorrow, so her approach works for me.The only difficulty I have is how to consume the enormous volume of pills, gel caps and capsules she recommends.Swallowing is a problem for some fibro folks.My best solution so far is to put the tablets inside two sealable freezer bags and smash them with a rubber mallet, then open all the gel caps and capsules to make a mostly powder mixture which I combine with ample amounts of apple sauce, honey and cinnamon sugar.A smoothie might be a good way to go if you have a good blender or smoothie machine.Mixing it all in water or plain juice didn't work for me though; it triggered a day long IBS attack which is not fun!

Life Saver
Nothing I tried made a positive difference in my severe IBS until I read this book and followed the guidelines. Though at first it seemed a daunting task to change my attitude about what (and what not) to eat, I soon felt so good that the change in diet became effortless.I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from IBS.

Excellent down-to-earth approach to digestion
Finally a helpful book anyone can understand.Lots of informative sections on everything from gallbladder attachs, IBS, to ulcers.
Don't bother. Its mostly drivel
Hey. Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. This isn't really a book about bowel problems. Its about anecdotal, unsupported, stories about some people who might have improved anyway. No science. No pretense of science. Not much information. Just look at how many used copies are for sale. Save your money. Stop going to MacDonalds, go home and cook yourself a good meal. Get a cookbook. Learn to cook. Don't buy this book. Drivel

As a naturopathic physician, treating the gut is a core principle. This book was recommended by one of my teachers and now that I am a practicing doctor I often refer back to this book. Hepatitis C Cookbook
This author puts extreme stress on food being of organic origins, and reducing intake of red meats.Unfortunately she loads recipes with whole milk, cream and butter.The butterfat in these products are is unhealthful as eating meat fat.They should be limited in all diets, but especially in foods prepared for people with liver damage.

Eating for Acid Reflux
Good information on acid reflux.Many of the recipes had ingredients that people with acid reflux can't use....like tomato paste with (as tolerated) in the recipe.I found only six recipes for my family.

I love this book, it gives you everything you need to know about GERD, and the food in the cookbook is delicious!! I reccomend this book to all GERD suffers out there!!

Excellent background information on the disease. One of the most complete descriptions and reasons why certain foods cause problems. However, I was very disappointed with the recipe section. I was expecting recipes for dishes that did not include foods that can cause heartburn. Instead, there were very common recipes, many containing several ingredients that GERD suffers should avoid, with instructions such as"if you have problems with onions, leave it out..."How helpful is that, really!? ... Another useful one in this clever series ...
It's true: it explains what many MDs neglect to mention in the office.Very useful reading -- BEFORE you go in to talk to the doctor.This will give you a framework for the best questions to ask.Unfortunately, the burden is on you, the patient, to ask them!Most docs volunteer nothing!Counterintuitive, I know, but it's the reality.Arm yourself with this simple, smart, easy to understand book.

Kids with Celiac Disease
If you have a child that has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, this book will explain everything you need to know about coping with the disease. It will be an invaluable tool toward helping you and your child learn more about being gluten-free and healthy. This is the best source I have found so far. It made the entire process a little less scary.

Totally contridictory information
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.
Very useful guide
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide.It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me.The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet.I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel.A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.

Good book if it's not the only one you read.
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber.Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer.The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties.There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends. ... Supplemental magnesium helped cure me; please see below
For decades I suffered from severe bouts of acid reflux and heartburn several times each week. A few years ago I began taking a daily supplement of 1,000 mg of chelated magnesium for another seemingly-unrelated ailment. To my pleasant surprise the supplemental magnesium not only cured the ailment for which I was taking it, it also completely stopped my episodes of acid reflux and heartburn. I have since learned that acid reflux is caused by stomach spasms which cause acid (which healthy stomachs are designed by nature to tolerate and utilize) to be ejected into the esophagus which is not designed to be exposed to stomach acid and burns when it is so exposed. Magnesium is a natural relaxant -- as well as a natural antacid -- and, therefore, it helps prevent the stomach spasms which are the root cause of acid reflux and accompanying heartburn. I am a research chemist, not a physician, so I cannot tell you to take chelated magnesium as I did. I can, however, report to you the beneficial effects which I experienced from daily supplementation with chelated magnesium. This isn't a bad book, but you can get all the same information going on line and keywording GERD or heartburn.I am sceptical of the many anecdotal patients in the book, used entirely to support her topic of the moment.I felt spoken down to in the book.Still, if you MUST have a book about this topic, this one will give you all the basics, but don't expect any revolutionary new ideas to conquer this bothersome syndrome.
