5-0 out of 5 stars Sports medicine
Runners, weight lifters, bikers, golfers, and other exercise buffs (I'm a runner) need serious guidance about injury prevention and how to improve your performance. I found this to be a great guide, not from an amateur enthusiast, but from a doctor who has seriously taken on the problem, even beyond the typical exercises I was familiar with from physical therapy over the years. And yes, they told me I'd likely have to do exercises for the rest of my life. And that's what makes this book so handy, you don't have a therpist with you day in and out.
2-0 out of 5 stars Backsmart book
I have had recurring back issues for quite some time (12 years) and have done lenghty research to help aleviate pain and improve performance. With that being said, I found this book to be entirely too basic for me.Much of what's covered are sretches and abdominal and bicep exercises.....very little lower/upper back exercises. If you're an athlete or somebody who's been active consistently, you probably won't find your answers in this book. However, for older or non-exercising individuals, this book has decent basic guidlines and is decent starter information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any training library
No matter what type of exercise program you are doing or starting, this book will help you do it better. The pictures really help to get your mind focused on what's happening during specific exercises and everyone seems to agree that is a good thing. Great layout. When you are ready to vary your routine this book can help you by identifying substitute exercises for those you are unable to perform the exercises yet due to back or neck weakness/ pain or simply don't yet have the strength to perform them yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading if you have kidney disease
the material is clearly written for the layman.however your own kidney doctor might take issue with the proposed solution , i.e. low protein diet .i know that johns hopkins urology department is top rated so i would tend to favor the recommendations in the book ..

5-0 out of 5 stars Haltingpolycystic kidney disease or delaying dialysis

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible hope
I have met many of the people who are featured as case histories in this book and their story is fantastic. Many have delayed dialysis from 5-12 years. They all had to struggle with their personal physician and with their local nephrologists, many of whom do not believe that people will change their diet to avoid dialysis.Dr. Walser maintained a lonely struggle in this country to get others nephrologists to push a strategy that had a 2.5% death rate (unrelated to the diet) vs. a 24% per year death rate for patients on dialysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the last 'Diet' book you will need
Finally I have found the answers I have been searching for. I feel as if I have read every book on dieting and not dieting and most of them will tell you what to eat, what not to eat or that you are eating for all the wrong reasons. OK, great, I know that...so HOW DO I STOP? This book guides you through the process of recognizing the emotions that lead to overeating and guides you through the process of sitting with the emotions instead of eating through them. The author is so right on with the thought process and behaviors of emotional eaters (such as describing how we may come home and we are tired and instead of getting rest, we have a need to reconnect or unwind and tend to start eating at that point...I certainly can relate to that!), yet she takes it to the next level and beyond by giving tools to deal with feelings and emotions that don't involve food for coping. She doesn't suggest eating celery or lettuce or 15 gallons of water. This is not about temporary distractions, but permanent healing. I have a circle of friends that have recently purchased this book and we can't wait to have everyone go through it and start a discussion group!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Life
I've never written a review before, but I feel very strongly about this book because it's changed my life. One of the author's central premises is that you need to deal with your emotions instead of eating to make them go away. Once I understood it; something clicked. In the past two weeks, I've lost 4 pounds without dieting; the difference is that I haven't pigged out when I get upset. I feel a million times better about myself and know that I can change my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple real life tools!!!
I felt like parts of this book were written for me.It was refreshing to get simple real life tools to use immediately. This book addresses the whole person not just the eating. I've done years of other programs on and off. This book helped me in ways no other program even addressed. ... Read more

This is a great book that offers many alternatives in treating interstitial cystitis. It's very helpful! It gives many, many tips on how to recover from this awful disease.I also recommend her other books "To Wake in Tears" and "Awakening through the Tears."

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope
I read the 1st two of her books; I will get the third in a couple of weeks.I have IC and I know I wouldn't be where I am without reading these books. They offer more hope than anything I've read. These are must read books. If you know of someone who has IC, buy them this book as a way of offeing them hope. They offer a way out, of what looks like, a no win situation.Thank you Catherine for writing these!

This book is both very illuminating and comforting. There are options one would not likely have found elsewhere. It gives hope that there is indeed light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.Written in a down to earth, warm style the book is like a welcome letter from a close friend.I am anxious to get started on Awakening Through the Tears. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Gluten-Free Bible
There are serious inaccuracies in this book that can cause a great deal of stress for a celiac. The section on medications with gluten is especially troubling as it causes someone who thought they were safe to worry for no reason. Most troubling is her treatment of the risks of cancer. Her treatment is both superficial, incaccurate and unrealistic. First she says that the risk is the same whether you maintain a gluten free diet or not. Then she says that the only thing you can do about it is to not worry about it. Her discussion of picking food out of a sandwiches is poor advice. In one section she understands the problems of cross contamination, yet doesn't seem to understand that picking apart food is more of a risk than using a toaster. Finally, her flip advice about how to avoid answering questions is ridiculous. Why not be honest instead of avoiding the questions. It's up to the person as to how many details they want to give. But avoiding the issue is not the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best and the most fun to read...
I started with Bette Hagman's books and was under-whelmed, to say the least. If you want plain ol' comfort food, Bette is the place to go, but for my tastebuds and style of dining, Jax is the WOMAN!!
1-0 out of 5 stars Do not hear, do not obey...
If you have a mild to moderate gluten intolerance, you can MAYBE follow this book's advice and be safe. If you have full on Celiac Disease, you will find yourself sick in a single digestive cycle!

I use this book all the time and have found it extremely helpful while undergoing chemotherepy, all the recipes are very well thought out and very tasty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes
This book has some good recipes, though not enough emphasis on sugar-free cooking. It is well-written and includes nutritional guidelines with a lot of easy-to-do recipes. I found the question and answer section helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally No More Diets!
I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money
This book is not what I expected. It's more of a "workbook" instead of a book to read.I was thoroughly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Transforming Experience
Having struggled with an eating disorder for the past 10 years of my life, I was certain that I would never have a healthy relationship with food again. But, then a good friend gave me Geneen's book, and I have not looked back since on those doubtful thoughts. This is a truely incredible program that, when followed and supplemented with Geneen's books "When Food Is Love" and "Feeding the Hungry Heart", can and will take the word "diet" out of your vocabularly forever.I have never felt better about myself and have never actually lost weight while still eating anything I wanted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Even though his book could be more organized, I give Dr. Cutler five stars for his content. I have owned the book for over four years and keep referencing it over and over. It outlines a conservative and safe protocol for mercury/heavy metal detoxification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Information on Mercury Poisoning
If you or someone you love has or suspects mercury poisoning, you need this book.Mercury poisoning and amalgam illness are very controversial subjects (at least in the U.S.), and it is often hard to get thorough information on properly diagnosing and treating it.This book is a godsend for those looking for answers.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only one that works
I was almost dead. This works. First energy came back to me for each round of detox. Then allergies lessened, joint aches went away, stomach problems decreased.. Well, poisonoed people can have hundreds of symptoms, I wont count to 100. Read his forum on yahoogroups for more info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diagnosis Unknown
It's no wonder fibromyalgia is so difficult to diagnose because of all the overlapping and/or symptoms of so many other diseases and problems.I thought the areas on choosing the right doctor were very good. One thing that was left out for self-treating someone with fibromyalgia was the use of the Theracane. My daughter who has fibromyalgia has said that she couldn't live without her Theracane because she can reach the pressure/trigger points and massage them herself, which seems to give her temporary relief from pain.(I have nothing to do with Theracane...its sale or promotion.)The book is very enlightening for uninformed family and friends of those who have this terrible syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Your Power
I bought this book because I have suffered with Fibromyalgia for 7 years.I belive if we get all the education we possibly can, this enables us to be more active in our health management.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia For Dummies
A member of my family was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and this book answered the vast percentage of questions we had about it.It is very easy to read and identifies the symptoms and side effects of the condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars OCD
This was a very informative and helpful book for both therapists and those seeking self-help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supportive and realistic
This book is exactly what it says - a complete guide. Very informative, practical help is given, with a strong element of understanding supportiveness at the same time. You can take this book, design a program for recovery, and implement it. Or, if you just want to understand more about the world of an OCD sufferer, you will find plenty of information here. I especially liked the sections covering realistic expectations in recovery, acceptances the sufferer needs to make in living with the disorder, and how to maintain a recovery over the long term. A lifeline to those suffering from OCD or their families, this book is hopeful and realistic at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. I highly recommend this book for the knowledge that it imparts as well as for the author's optimism and compassion, which are evident throughout the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, accurate and balanced
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I, like many other men, did a great deal of reading (both books and internet sources). One thing you find out quickly is - there's almost too much information out there, and it is vitally important to separate the "wheat" from the "chaff".I read Dr. Walsh's book first, and kept going back to it as I read other material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Career saving
When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.

I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book
I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (inconjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.

3-0 out of 5 stars Once Again
Once again a person with PHD's tries to convince us that, yes, allopathic medicine doesn't work, but please buy his supplements.Adrenal dysfunction can be the sign of many imbalances, as one reviewer stated, and though some believe this is a good starting point, I would caution them.Get to the cause of the adrenal exhaustion, rather than just treating the adrenals.Read "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," first, then move onto "specialist" books that may add some additional "tweaking."

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, thoughtful, book to get you on the road toward improving your quality of life
Well worth reading. Like so many books, it may not be your exact or entire problem, but it's good stuff to consider. Everything in public health that has brought us to healthier living is being undone by lifestyle, poor nutrition, and "a pill to cure it" medicine. A good, thoughtful, book to get you on the road toward improving your quality of life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Information
This book is great. It gave you so much information. By the end of the book you can see if this book applies to you or not. This book covers everything so you can make a decision if this is you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Except....
The book is well-documented and gives complete and clear explanations of diseases, causes, and possible solutions - ultimately suggesting which product is a natural way to releive symptoms and improve health. That's fine, except they don't do enough to alert you that fixing one thing may be bad for another. While you can talk live to an "advisor" anytime, they are not medical doctors and may not be aware of negative consequences of an item. For example, if you have burning with urination, the book and advisors may lead you to take the potent "CRANMAX" which may be excellent for urinary tract infection. But if the burning is from prostrate problems, a heavy dose of cranberry juice (quite acidic) is not a good idea.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Baby Boomer's Survival Manual- A "Must Have" Book
As the largest block of Americans approaches the ranks of senior status, we face an economy that is incapable of taking care of us we become feeble incompetent old people, especially when there will be more people over the age of 50 in the USA than under the age of 50 by the year 2025!!We owe it to ourselves and our children to be strong, healthy, vital seniors capable of thinking for ourselves, strong enough to carry our own groceries, healthy enough to function independently and if we need to, continue to work well past 65 to support ourselves. The only way to do this is with the Prevention of Disease, not by treating the symptoms of degenerative diseases after they occur. This comprehensive text is extremely valuable for anyone interested in saving their own future, from the medical person to the average consumer of nutritional products.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I was really disappointed when I read this book.If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book.It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke! There's no way I can stick to something like that.I would starve too death!
1-0 out of 5 stars Traditional 12 step approach
After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review.I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself.Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again.I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling.I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book.I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was.If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
What a disappointment! The authors’ answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your “trigger” foods are from your diet. Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life. That’s hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food. They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of “safe” food available to you at all times.Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer! ... Editorial Review

At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminalcancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, shefaced the cruel taunts of classmates. In this strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit.Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and the guilty pleasure of wanting to be special, Grealycaptures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly tobe perfect ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It had Potential...
Avoid this book like the plague.
5-0 out of 5 stars Achingly honest and touching memoir from a real human being
Many reviewers have beautifully reviewed this haunting memoir. I just wanted to add how touched I was by Lucy's struggle, not to be special, but to be normal. Her memoir describes acutely the psychic distress of finding oneself outside the norm in society. Despite Lucy's struggle for acceptance and normalcy, she still displays true wisdom and strength from her "outsider" perspective. Some think her stance toward others is unsympathetic, I found her to be as unflinching in revealing her thoughts and found her level of awareness of herself refreshing, if self-oriented, at times. There is something about standing out in an unwanted way that can create a barrier between us and the rest of the world and perhaps Lucy had a protective barrier that closedher off from others. Who am I to judge, I just stand in awe of the courage she displays time and again.Other reviewersalso criticize Lucy for not overcoming her need for acceptance, or normalcy. I can only thank Lucy for incarnating and being who she was, so honestly, so vulnerably, and for offering us an uncensored, heart-breaking, and ultimately revealing view of her experience of the world. I am sure many will resonate with the experience of being "outcast" and feel we have a friend and supporter in Lucy. Thanks Lucy, for not putting any masks on in your writing but allowing us to see youin your true complexity. I salute you wherever you may be.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Spiral Staircase Revisited
This book was much better written than Karen Armstrong's The Spiral Staircase but it was the same whining and self-pitying all over again. The author had no real feelings about her father's death yet she can't understand how people lack compassion for her deformity. When a woman who had had a mastectomy spoke to her about her own deep feelings of ugliness and loss, she dismisses the other woman's feelings because no one else's suffering can be as great as her own. It seems like she could only think of herself, her own feelings and her complete misery at being "ugly" without the slightest inkling that other people might have feelings and tragedies in their own lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Offering information and answers to parents who are dealing with this issue is what makes Ms. Natenshon's book so unique. In addition to providing great information in a clear and easy to understand manner, the author prepares a clear path for parents and professionals to understnad how to prevent and ultimately to treat various eating disorders. A must have for anyone coping with this difficult issue.
5-0 out of 5 stars educational, unconditional, and a grand lesson for communicating
I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Parents and Caregivers
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for theparents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 23 year survivor
I think this is a great book, now we just need a book on finances and how to plan for lifes events like college, buying a home, and retirement planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars 18 Year Survivor and Counting!!!
I am an 18 year survivor of Osteoganic Sarcoma and I found this book to be one of the best and informative books I've ever read. I read things that I didn't even know about my disease or the long term late effects due to the chemotherapy I received. I will admit, at times it was TOO much information, but it was all factual and there were things that I read that I had to come to term with. I have an appointment at a Late Effects Clinic in a few weeks, and I am eager to get on with the rest of my life. A big Thank You to the authors who took so much time doing research and putting their own blood, sweat and tears into such an awesome project!!! Sincerely, Diane Trautman Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for Survivors!
This book is what every survivor, their parent(s) and thier doctor needs! It is comprehensive and well laid out...I love how I can easily find information on areas of concern I have regarding my son's survival. It has come in handy during follow up appointments to ensure my son is receiving the proper long term care. There is a compact card in the back of the book where all information about the child's treatment can be recorded so the child will have easy to access, concise information regarding their surgeries, chemotherapy drugs, radiation amount and type, etc. I know this will be an indispensible tool for my son as he grows up. I applaud the authors for writing a much-needed book. This book is a MUST-HAVE for EVERY childhood cancer survivor! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect sight---your birthright!
'Relearning to See' is the largest and most comprehensive book ever written on the Bates Method of Natural Eyesight Improvement Re-Education. The author has taught Natural Eyesight Improvement and Teacher Training classes since 1983. He has recently relocated from San Francisco to the Natural Vision Center in Ashland, Oregon. RTS contains the pioneering work of ophthalmologist William H. Bates, MD. This educational program is *not* about eye exercises---a common misconception of the Bates Method. The most important contribution of RTS is that it concisely describes the 3 principles and 3 habits of natural vision. Yet each principle and habit is thoroughly explained, since all of them are necessary for normal, clear sight. RTS is a 521-page tome containing 60 color plates, over 150 illustrations and eye charts, (not a small booklet like most other books written on this topic), and contains information on how to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, strabismus (e.g. crossed-eye), amblyopia (lazy-eye), and many other vision problems. Even many serious eye problems have improved with this educational program. RTS covers reading, driving, using a computer, in nighttime vision, flying, light tolerance, artificial lighting and many other topics. Glasses are an artificial crutch, and contact lenses are foreign objects. Both tend to reinforce strained vision habits and make your eyesight worse. RTS educates you about lenses and prescriptions so you can go to your eye doctor and get legal, safe, reduced-power glasses while you are improving your eyesight. One of the most interesting and valuable chapters is called 'Brains and Vision,' where the author presents a larger perspective on the Bates Method using the modern right brain/left brain model. Bates stated that vision is primarily mental. The sections on left-brain myopes versus right-brain farsights are quite revealing. There are many mental and vision quality benefits to improving eyesight naturally, including memory, concentration, imagination, creativity, color perception, depth perception, contrast and texture awareness. While Dr. Bates did make some errors, his *solutions* of re-establishing correct vision habits are flawless---because they are created by nature. Read Chapter 1, Chapters 2-4 if you have been wearing glasses or contacts; then jump to Chapters 9+ and get started with natural vision principles and habits.
5-0 out of 5 stars Relearning to See:Improve Your Eyesight - Naturally!
Fantastic book! I have been wearing glasses since 1970, but since reading this book and practicing the principles explained within it, I doubt I will have to continue wearing glasses much longer. After only one month, I have noticed a definite improvement in my eyesight -- glasses which were once too weak for me are now almost too strong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing non-allopathic approach to healing vision
I tried this for 9 days while on vacation and I was amazed by the results. All of the bad vision habits that Dr. William H. Bates discovered I had. After a few days practice, I was having "flashes" of perfect vision discussed in the book. I was seeing details like leaves on trees rather than a big amorphous blob of green.
