The best education in Type 2 Diabetes
When I need to learn about a topic I go to the library. My research leads me to read many books on the subject. There are usually some duds or outdated books. This book is a standout! The very best of the dozen or so books I have read on Diabetes. I learned more in this book than all the other combined. The author writes from experience and has many ideas on ways to get the best blood sugar control. The other books can stay on the shelf. This is one that I need to buy and own so I can refer back to it again and again. I recommend that anyone with Type 2 diabetes to read this book if you are serious about getting better blood sugar control! Her approach is sypathetic too. It's good to get this information from someone who knows from the inside what you are thinking and feeling. Two chapters standout in my mind. One is about burnout; you have to face diabetes everyday, it doesn't go on vacation. The other is about going to social events and having trouble finding something acceptable to eat. I would think this would be a very good book for diabetes counslors to give to their new patients when first learning of diagnosis of diabetes.
Misses the boat on Depression
I was incredibly impressed with this bookuntil I got to the bit on depression.As one of my clients said, this woman has never been depressed. There are books dating back to the 30s on how eating sugar significantly affects mood in some people. Many clients seem to be able to guess their own blood sugar ratings based on their depressed mood and lack of motivation. I was surprised that Mendosa's wonderful website doesn't list the word depression.People who have significant depression associated with variations in blood sugar are severly underserved by Becker's book. While there are many studies that claim you are at no greater risk for diabetes after a diagnosis (which is probably true) it seems to me that what actually occurs is that people are more likely to experience significant clinical depression related to diabetes BEFORE it is diagnosed.Then when blood sugar is controlled they actually have less depression. How unusual and fortunate for Becker and Mendosa that they are so blessed to be depression free. I hope it doesn't make people who do have depression associated with diabetes and variations in blood sugar feel crazy.

Oschman did something quite exceptional in this book; he expressed my understanding of the way living things work, but went beyond my dark intuitive sense of the significance of the whole, to a crisp,intellectual, yet poetic, expression of the parts in relation to that whole

Exceptional compilation of research
I received this book from Amazon a few days ago and am halfway through it. I'm so impressed by Oschman's compilation of research - it's provided me with countless answers I've been seeking all my life. I am a degreed mechanical engineer, and am currently getting an advanced degree in Oriental Medicine. I've also been practicing Reiki and other energy healing modalities for several years, having been drawn into these alternative healing fields because of my natural ability for sensing subtle energies ever since I was little. Until I started reading Oschman's book I never had a scientific explanation for this energy or why it was so helpful in healing others. I've always known that these energies are real but I definitely appreciate a scientific explanation for any type of energy phenomenon - it makes it much easier to explain to others who haven't had similar experiences why and how they happen. I meet a lot of people who are interested in energy healing and some who are quite skeptical of its validity. Thanks to this book, I now have a clear way of explaining what I and countless others have known all along - that energy medicine really does work. If you're simply curious about why energy medicine works, or you're a practitioner yourself and have wanted a scientific way of explaining its validity to your friends and clients, you'll definitely appreciate this book (even with the $40 price tag). Keep in mind, however, that this book will not teach you how to practice any of these energy medicine techniques - it will simply give you a very clear and easy way to explain why they work. ... Uh OK - Now What???
Hmmmm he goes deep into the history of issues involving the mind, to the point of boredom.Then he goes deep into what types of physical disorders come from the mind having the issues.But then nothing.There is one and a half pages on what you might do in order to assist in resolving these issues.Come on, if this is truly meant to help people then give them something to work with instead of just recommending psychotherapy.I agree with the concept that child abuse/neglect can create hell for the rest of that person's life - but give specific ways to help in getting rid of the garbage instead of what was laid out in this book.He makes way too many references to purchase his other books throughout this book.Just another book thats "all about the money" and not truly about helping others!

The best book for recovering bulimics I have ever read
This is the best book that I have read thus far in my recovery. Jenni touches on all of the emotions, insanity, and obsession of the disease with humor and strength. She provides hope for all of us trying to recover. It is a great book .

Life Without Ed is one of the only books I have read on eating disorders that is NOT triggering (Jenni does not give any tips or tricks).I find hope and inspiration every time I read it. I actually carry it with me daily just in case I need to refer back to it.

Okay, But...
This a good trigger point therapy workbook, complete with "rubberball" tools, but the problem is, once again, this therapy is being touted as the "be-all-end-all" approach to pain management and health.Trigger point is a modality, a bodywork modality, and needs to be recognized as such.Just as massage, reflexology,and shiatsu are modalities, there needs to be a line drawn so people don't confuse this with a health book.Gangi's book does much better in defining our path to balanced health, and also redefines therapies such as this one so people aren't confused or misled. High on the list because it's used in massage schools, but not the best for people wanting to find the cause of their pain, and then dealing with it.

A Useful Book for Me
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook is founded on Travell and Simons' research, but it's Travell and Simons LITE.Sixteen-hundred pages of difficult medical language have been reduced to a concise, easy-to-read 323 pages, while retaining all the essentials of trigger point science.
'Trigger Happy'

Excellent book
I bought this book after being diagnosed as Bipolar II.For many years I've been diagnosed as having PMS, PMDD, and most forms of depression.It wasn't until I experienced a major depressive episode (suicidal), became euphoric while on antidepressants, and saw a good psychiatrist that I felt I was finally diagnosed properly.
The best book for patietnts about bipolar spectrum disorders.
This is a very important book in these days when many depressed patients are placed on antidepressants after a too short 5 minute visit to their primary care doctor. The National Comorbidity Survey found that 15-20% of patients with depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum. These patients will not get well and stay well with antidepressants alone as their treatment. Dr Phelps explains clearly how to tell if your depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum and tells you about the treatments that can help. I have recomended Dr Phelps website at psycheducation.com for some years. I find the book to be just as good. There is very balanced presentation of all the controversial issues.

Good, if not a tad condesending
As a Bipolar II sufferer I agree with all that has been stated by the other reviewers.However this books greatest failing is in its definition of Bipolar II as "soft" bipolar.It is a seperate illness and should not be compared as such.Bipolar sufferes have greater highs, but bipolar II sufferers have greater lows (which also tend to last longer than bipolar I).

This book has saved my life!
I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.

If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.

An Absolute Breakthrough
At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, I will simply say that as a type I diabetic the advice in this book has improved my condition immeasurably. After 8 months of following its low carbohydrate guidelines my A1C has dropped from 8.7 to an all-time low of 6.4 and my daily insulin dosage has decreased by almost 40% (both long-acting and fast-acting). I finally feel a measure of control over the disease and am slowly getting some respite from the constant frustration that unpredictable fluctuations in blood glucose measurements inevitably induce. I must add that I have not even been following the program very rigorously and have chosen to pass on some of its more drastic aspects (to me). I do admit that losing most of my carb-heavy comfort foods was difficult at first (and occasionally still is) but the payoff is really so staggering that I believe every diabetic should be exposed to this information as part of their healthcare education and shouldn't have to buy a book in order to obtain it.
Yes and No; Better for Type 2s
Caveat Emptor. Removing all carbs from your diet to control blood sugar is like never leaving the house if you suffer from allergies. Following Dr. Bernstein's advice religiously without being in constant consultation with your personal MD is potentially very dangerous. Restricting ALL carbs the way he advises may help type 2 people who are overweight. Not for Type 1s who need carbs as much as we need insulin shots. I tried this type of diet and looked like a skeleton within a month. In a way us Type 1s have it easier, just more track marks, but removing all carbs and substituting them for these mysterious G/G crackers he praises can and will make you lose weight, give you more lows and create more problems. It may work for some, is probably very helpful for overweight type 2s, and a lot of the advice he does give is outstanding but please don't take it as the final word.

The Best Book on Diabetes That I have Ever Read
If you have diabetes, if you live with a diabetic, read this book.It's wonderfully clear in its explanations and arguments.Supplement it perhaps with the general writings of Dr. Andrew Weil on various foods, vitamins,and food preparation,but take a look at what Dr. Bernstein is saying about protein and carbs.This is a field where there is much disagreement, but I find this book to be convincing and extremely helpful.The best book on diabetes I've ever read. ... Another WHO book
World Health Organization: Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs (edited by Fattaneh A. Tavassoli and Peter Devilee) is the 4th in the Pathology and Genetics of Tumours series from the WHO. With an impressive set of multidisciplinary contributors from several continents, this book improves on previous books from that organization by representing a reasonable attempt towards consensus in their presentation of the various topics. The main strength of this book, as with others in the series, is that they are concise and emphasize the most salient points in each topic. While it is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of the various tumors, essential definitions, clinical findings, morphologic points, immunophenotypic variations and molecular and/or cytogenetic pathogenesis are well presented.This book does not resolve some of the more controversial issues in these fields (such as the prognostic significance of micropapillary patterns in ovarian serous borderline tumors or terminologic issues in intraductal breast proliferations), but at least provides another framework for further discussion. The illustrations are excellent and the text is well-supplemented with tables. Overall, I would recommend this book to trainees and practitioners alike ... Read more

Excellent Book Foreshadows Cure
Dr. Green's resume shows that he is the foremost expert on this subject that I've read to date.This book at least comments on and often answers many questions that have risen in the quest to learn about topics such as celiac disease, wheat allergy, gluten intolerance, and the subtleties of differences in diagnoses and interpretations among the medical community and others.

This certainly is a purist's view, but that doesn't make it bad
I see a lot of critics of the Ornish diet suggested in the book; however, it certainly seems as if there is a lot of data available to document the results and support the promotion of the Ornish diet.However, I would strongly suggest reading both Dr. Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease and Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on the same.I think that the Whitaker book provides a much more practical view and also displays what may be a good diet (and life-style, etc) for (1) a healthy person that wants to prevent possibility of heart disease, a "preventative" approach, and (2) a person who has heart disease and needs a "reversal" approach.That said, Dr. Ornish's book is an eye-opener and does cause a concerned reader to focus on the level of discipline and focus that a "reversal" diet and life-style requires.

There are better books out there these days
After my older brother suddenly died of coronary artery disease at age 40 due to genetically high cholesterol, I needed to learn everything possible on the subject so that I could avoid suffering the same fate.I read all the books on the shelf, among them Dr. Ornish's.I disliked this book because it is rather narcissistic and is focused more on Dr. Ornish himself than on educating us about how to avoid heart disease.Take a look at chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean: "I was trained to treat hypertension..."; "I first became interested in conducting research on heart disease in 1975..."; "I began to wonder..."; "I went to the medical library and began reading extensively"; "It seemed like an exciting opportunity, so in 1977 I decided to take a year off..."; "I hadn't had enough clinical experience to be jaded..."; "I was unwittingly giving many of them hope for the first time since their illness had been diagnosed"; "I went back to medical school and graduated in 1980"; "From 1981 to 1984, I completed my internship and medical residency in Boston."; "In July 1984, I moved to San Francisco..."This is just the tedious first six pages.Trust me, it goes on and on like this.Do you want to learn about how the heart works?You'll finally get a few sentences on that subject when you get to page 42, squeezed in between more "I did this and I did that."You'll get a little info on LDL and HDL when you get to page 51.Sure, there is useful information within the 672 pages of this book, but you'll be forced to become an expert on Dr. Ornish and his life story to find it.And remember, this book is more than 15 years old.Perhaps back in 1990 he needed to devote 300 pages to convincing people that he was correct in believing that diet, exercise, and stress affect your risk of heart disease, but that that is common knowledge and not controversial now.The research is far more advanced in today's world.If you are interested in Dr. Ornish personally and the history of the study of heart disease in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll probably enjoy this book.But if you are serious about educating yourself on heart disease and how best to avoid it, I would recommend Dr. Robert Superko's "Before the Heart Attacks : A Revolutionary Approach to Detecting, Preventing, and Even Reversing Heart Disease" (2003) or Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz's "The Expert Guide to Beating Heart Disease: What You Absolutely Must Know" (2005).These books are more up to date and provide far more useful information.

Great Book
When I follow the diet and work on the other aspects of the program I feel better, lose weight, am happier and have better test results.The book is easy to read and understand.The program is not for the die hard meat lover.It takes commitment to follow.From the reviews I have read and comments from coworkers and friends, it also takes an open mind and balanced attention.I am currently purchasing this book for my adult son.It all depends on what a reader is looking for.Dr. Ornish does not give a quick fix.I am a believer. ... One of the best books for people with diabetes
One of the best books that is also very easy to read for busy people with diabetes.
I WAS a dummy before I read this book
I was a terrified dummy when I first learned I had type 2 diabetes in May of 2006. This is the first book I read. I felt like I could live with this disease (after reading it) and it would not be the death sentence I had previously thought it would be. We're only as healthy as we let ourselves be at any time. I plan on living to see my great grandchildren born and I don't have any grandchildren....yet!!

Maybe I'm Dumber Than I Thought
Although most of the books for "dummies" are very readable, I found this one to be a bit clinical and geared more toward full-blown diabetes instead of focusing on prediabetes which was what Iwas looking for.

Relief from chronic pain / EBV a bonus
I bought this book in desperation as my chronic inflammatatory pain and the crippling exhaustion from chronic Epstein Barr have had me so dependent upon Tylenol and aspirin I feared for my liver and stomach. The first thing I did ( with my docs ok ) was drop my statin drug and start taking 6 gms of flax seed oil and 1 gm of evening primrose oil daily, along with changing my diet. I have to tell you it was the best thing I've done. My muscle and joint pain - previously so bad I worked part time for a bit - is 85% gone!! My knees, my biggest problems, are so good I can walk in the evenings with my husband, where before I was in physical therapy to get through the grocery store. I couldnt even take care of my grandson for a whole evening alone, and now Gramma can get on the floor and play !
this book has missed the point
Another book offering limited help to those with asthma. As a sufferer for long enough until I learned about the Buteyko method. If you wish to take control of your condition, this is the only therapy that works and does it very well.

Self Help at it's best
I'm a physician and I have recommended this book and given it as a gift. It helped my own daughter. As a nation we are sleep deprived and for the subset of people who find it hard to fall asleep a natural method to deal with this problem is preferable to a drug solution with all it's side effects. If insomnia is your problem, this is the first stop to improved sleep.

Excellent comprehensive program!
Jacobs does an excellent job of coherently outlining the causes of insomnia and barriers to sleep.He provides a concise outline of the physiology of sleep along with a nicely designed 6 week program to cure insomnia.

Hypothyroidism Review - Excellent Information
I found this book to be very informative and factual.For those of us living with Hypothyroidism, this is an excellent book.P.S.Find a doctor who will listen to your symptoms as a whole and not try to treat each symptom individually, such as the book carefully guides you.Be persistent in your search, as there are actually doctors out there who WILL listen and take the time to help, rather than succumbing to the HMO drive thru approach, as my first "primary" care physician did -- stating that my blood levels were NORMAL, when in fact they were not.Be educated in your condition -- as there are treatment options which will bring you out of your "fog and fatigue" and make you feel like a real person again.

Good read for those with back pain
Has stretches that definitely help reduce chronic neck and back pain. Recommended by my physician.Stunned that the chiropractor never told me about it!

This book was written in a clear and straight foward style and packed with invaluable information for back and neck pain sufferers.
Good Health and a Pain Free Back
This book is much more than a few simple exercises. It taught me a lot of things, from why I should not be lifting heavy things first thing in the morning to what is the proper way to sneeze (looking up). Posture is extremely important.The pain will surely come back if the posture is not corrected, no matter how many exercises you do all these things was necessary for me to learn from this book.Read the book and learn from the advice about good posture etc,.So the book really helps me, and I completely recommend it.

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
This food is fabulous!
My husband had bariatric surgery in June.When we arrived at the solid food stage, I was in a panic as to what to cook.Moist low fat and tasty food was quite an order.

I purchased this book months before my surgery.Once I had my surgery in June, I started going through the book and picking out the recipes that I could have as soon as could eat.This book actually gives you suggestions as to whether or not you should try the recipe depending on what week you are in as well as breakdown of 3 kinds of surgery. I have tried about 20 of the recipes and have loved each of them. I have learned so much from this book.I hope that someone somewhere puts out another cookbook for us post-ops.BTW at 11 weeks post-op I am 100 lbs. down. ... Read more

Extremely Helpful
I have scoliosis and this book has been a tremendous resource in understanding and caring for my condition. The book is a good start and it eventually got me interested in taking some yoga classes and exploring some of the different practices. I'm so glad I found this book; yoga has been a positive force in my life for some time now.

Real yoga, really good advice, well written
Lots of back pain books provide exercises, but this one takes them directly from the Iyenger Yoga method; Iyenger revolutionized Yoga from the 1960's to the present by applying contemporary knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the traditional and spiritual aspects of yoga.Teachers trained and certified in Iyenger Yoga are a 'cut' above others from my lengthy experience with Yoga practice. That said, dr. Schatz uses Iyenger's methods (Iyenger also wrote the intro) to design a comprehensive program for all types of back and neck problems; she also provides accurate and clear illustrations of the spine structure and related anatomy.The photos are very clear and easy to understand as are the instructions of asanas and restorative poses..The book is the right length, size and format.Many back prob
