1-0 out of 5 stars Criminal misinformation....defunct theories
I've had to self-educate on thyroid problems since previous doctors had screwed me up. I saw this book and read it and I became very angry. When milk gets outdated and is no longer healthy to drink it starts to smell. This book should positively reek. The information in this book is more than a third of a century out of date. Barnes could be excused for not understanding basic workings of the thyroid, such as the pituitary controlling it through TSH and modern medications to treat thyroid problems, because his "theories" and "ideas" were made 40 years ago and before thi stuff had been discovered. On the other hand, you can't excuse any reader for thinking that this stuff is valid in the 21st Century.
5-0 out of 5 stars an intriguing book
This is a great book about the thyroid, and the many varied effects that hypothyroidism can have on human beings.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
I tried to find specific conditions in the book - and the procedures to follow for treating them.I couldn't even figure out the procedures to follow when reading them - the writing just isn't very clear.
3-0 out of 5 stars Requires two people
I was very interested in this book based on the reviews. I was able to look at it at the library before buying it. To my surprise, almost everything in the book requires two people. The book is more like an instruction book for a physical therapist. If you are looking for a book that you can use by yourself, I highly recommend The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous help!
This book has been an absolute necessity for me as a massage therapy student! It has been much better than our required anatomy textbook for getting a good look at and understanding of the musculoskeletal system.I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn these areas of anatomy and especially for those working with massage/bodywork.A tremendously helpful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Clinical Massage
One of the most comprehensive massage books, the easiest to read and with THE best pictures - showing anatomy drawings superimposed on photos of clients - in various different positions! Reccommend it to all remedial/deep tissue massage students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've used so far!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to life after cancer
I'm finding lots of answers to the many questions I have after finishing chemo for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma.Even family members would find this book helpful too. It's reassuring, honest and comforting reading about getting back to "life" after such a life changing event.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book for life after cancer
When you visit the health section of your local bookstore, you'll find a plethora of information about getting through a cancer diagnosis, and very little about how to adjust to life after cancer. As the founder of a cancer support group, I believe that survivors are leaving our hospitals in droves - unprepared.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book was critical to my recovery
I can't remember who suggested this book to me while I was recovering from surgery and radiation for liposarcoma in my leg. It must've been someone from my online support group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Jim Johnson
Physical therapist (P.T.) Jim Johnson's The Multifidus Back Pain Solution is a straight forward, educational and hope inspiring read that has been effective in helping me address my lower back and leg nerve pain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Approaches Used For Back Therapy
I found this book to be an excellent guide and would highly recommend it to anyone starting their own journey in addressing a back injury. It's short, but it has a lot of good information very well presented. While the author does focus on the multifidus muscle, the book gives a very objective overview of how to handle back problems in general, from generic lower back pain to pain associated with herniated disks. He also helps lay people understand how the medical profession categorizes back injuries to put them in their proper scope. The book describes several exercises, but not anything beyond the scope of the multifidus.More exercises would have been a great addition, but the book isn't about all back exercises.Anyone with a serious back injury should see a physical therapist for guidance. What I found most useful in the book is the short mention of steroid injections (epidural), which seem to be questionably useful. The author could have elaborated more on the appropriateness of them, as it's hard to compare your own situation with those in studies (ie: how many millimeters is the disk bulging).I also liked the fact that the author provided select references for the types of issues most lay people would be interested in viewing. In my own experience, I've learned that a muscle imbalance is most likely the cause of my L5-S1 herniated disk, and it took 14 weeks and a good number of visits with various practitioners to come to that conclusion.

4-0 out of 5 stars the little know multifidus muscle
I had 2 herniated discs.Went through chiro, massage, p.t., cortisone injections....then i read this book and began following the exercises in it.The MacKenzie method DID NOT work for me, it only created more pain. This book was extremely helpful to me.Surprisingly, my massage therapist recommended it, not my physical therapist, orthopeadic, or chiropractor.I am fully healed without surgery and running marathons!I recommend this book to any average person who wants to have a better understanding of how to strengthen your back and core! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
By giving you an understanding of how the person with alzheimers views their world, this book helps the caregiver make life a little easier, happier, and more meaningful. It also reduces the stress and frustration of the caregiver because you gain knowledge of how to handle situations that before were a struggle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for anyone touched by dementia
Jolene Brackey spoke at the nursing home where I work with patients with dementia. She is an incredible speaker and author. This book has so many wonderful ideas for nursing home workers and people who have loved ones with dementia. It is very reader-friendly and easy to understand. Jolene includes many real life examples to illustrate her ideas. She has a sense of humor and a sense of compassion that radiates with every chapter. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I found the book to be very interesting and well-written. It explained a lot of different reasons why people have heart attacks and heart problems. But, I was ultimately disappointed because Dr. Guarnei didn't give any suggestions on how patients could help themselves. Well, yes, certainly one could move to the San Diego area and attend her alternative healing sessions - at $50.00 a pop - and you have to do two to three a week! Not for nothing is the site located in one of the wealtiert communities in the nation - La Jolla. I'm sure a lot of heart patients wish they had an extra $600 a month to learn to breathe. I would have been more empressed if the doctor had included a section of things real, normal people can do.

5-0 out of 5 stars If we listen to the patient, they will provide their diagnosis....
Dr. Guarneri's book The Heart Speaks is full of realities in patient health. It is interesting to me to see the journey that Dr. Guarneri has made to provide quality of care rather than quantity of care to her patients. She has had to challenge what she has been taught and believed in order to develop as a doctor. She has had to adjust her own life so that she can try to understand what her patients need.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, much needed in medicine
I loved this book. The Author takes you through her life in such a way that you understand medical school, her background and the philosophy in medicine we all live with. More importantly she details her transformation to a balanced view of medicine and what is needed today with a more spiritual, healing side along with the science. She also gives us a ground breaking view of the heart - which pardon the pun, but it will do your heart good. Excellent work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better late than never.
It's taken a long time for this disorder to be recognized for what it is and it still has a long way to go in becoming more well known. The book is not an easy read, but then the disorder is not easily diagnosed either.Hopefully someone will write about Central Auditory Processing Disorders to suppliment this complex and intensive book for the sake of learning how to explain this highly unknown handicap to those who have trouble understanding that it is not a hearing loss problem but rather an auditory information processing difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
This book is indispensible for the audiologist/SLP/parent/professional working with APD.I only wish we could have read this one BEFORE the text books in grad school..would have made much more sense. Very nicely written, presenting of scenarios was important...more info to assimilate to your childs difficulty. May of seemed cut and dry to some, but if it was not, you would be reading the unabridged version and toting it on wheels. Not everyone uses the same categorization strategy...but that is the beauty of research and ongoing learning...take some info from each and you are well rounded.Maybe those who chose to go only half way through the bookand not PAST the case studies to the theraputic ideas are the same ones hoping for a quick remedy. This disorder takes time and patience and an informed parent.Good Luck..... challenges and good times are ahead. Thanks Terri for giving us all a small part of you....A fellow CCC-A

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the Whole Book Before you Review It!
For the reader who said that this book is depressing, consists entirely of case studies, and provides no concrete information regarding diagnosis or, especially, treatment, I couldn't help but notice that you wrote your review when you had only read half of the book. Read on! You will find specific recommendations for diagnosis, understanding APD and its relationship to language and learning, and tons of treatment approaches that offer hope for children and adults with APD. The case studies serve to illustrate how these disorders affect people in the real world, and you may see yourself, your child, your parent, or your spouse in them. But this is the only book written for the layperson that really, truly does provide guidance that is scientifically sound from a world renowned expert in the field. Next time, please read the whole book before you review it!! ... Read more

I have two other books that echo much of the information in this book, so I found the entire book rather repetitious, and the other books I have are much better, more organized and more entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please add selenium as discussed below
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.

5-0 out of 5 stars never trust a zealot for your healthcare either
I don't know too many physicians who pick up a textbook and consider themselves qualified for an entire branch or subspecialty of medicine. Those who seek to add acupuncture to their practices almost universally do it out of frustration with drugs and surgery, and the quest to help their patients in ways that western medicine cannot.I fall into this category, as do several of my colleagues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Never see an MD for acupuncture
It scares me that Medical doctors and osteopaths pick this book up and consider themselves qualified to do acupuncture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work
I am a western trained Osteopathic Family Physician with a strong interest in integrating acupuncture into my clinical practice.I have studied numerous Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts and find myself lost and confused. My western trained mind has a difficult time grasping Qi, Essence, Channels, the Four Examinations, the Eight-Principle Pattern Identification. . . What I can grasp are the concepts of Biomedical and Neuroanatomic acupuncture as presented in "Biomedical Acupuncture for Pain Management".If you are a western trained health professional and are interested in learning more about acupunture or are interested in a practical book that can help you integrate acupuncture into your clinical practice, then this book is for you.I strongly recommend that you also look at "Acupuncture, An Anatomic Approach" by Houchi Dung.I carry both of these books back and forth to work every day.I use them and refer to them that often. ... Dr. Sarno's concept is sound, but this is his first report, rather old. There are two newer books, the best of which, of course, is the 2006 "The Divided Mind : The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders", which I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
After reading all the 5 star reviews for the predecessor (Pain Free) to this book," I checked it out at the library to see if the program really worked. The program sounded to good to be true, but the volume of 5 star reviews really made me want to try it out. After about a week and a half on the program, I no longer had bad arthritus pain in my wrist, and was able to get off the glucosamine. Glucosamine worked for me, but it is expensive. Since doing the exercises, my shoulder pain isalso much less severe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource-Poor binding
The book is an incredible resource for women. It gives a new paradigm for viewing our bodies and for believing in the possibility of health. We are well designed, we just need to use our bodies according to the design!
3-0 out of 5 stars Designed for general health, not specific problems
I checked out three of Egoscue and Gittines' books from the library today.I read "Pain Free for Women" first.I have a few thoughts about it:

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good book in need of a copyeditor
If you're already familiar with the terms 'lateral' and 'medial', then you'll know that "Latoral joint Compartment" in figure 2-1A&B on p. 29 is probably not what they meant, especially since it's across from the "Medial joint Compartment" in the same illustration. And then again on p. 31 in figure 2-3A&B there is the "Later Menicus" [Lateral Meniscus] across from the "Medial Meniscus"
