2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I mostly wanted to be able to look up regular food made at home (i.e.biscuits, macaroni and cheese). I resorted to trying to think of a company thatmakes that food, so I could look up a brand name, but this didn't always work. The Quick Guide sometimes helped in finding these general foods, but not always.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy tool
This book is good for diabetics or anyone counting carbohydrates. Some extraneous information (protein and sodium) is included. Most major resturant chain foods are included. Must use index in back to locate foods since book is not alphabetic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Important work if one understands its place
This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment!
I had hoped this book could be my benchmark for herbal information. What I found was a book that was hard to use with little useful information....Otherwise, Facts and Comparisions' Review of Natural Products is a better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Solid and Dependable Work on the Market
I have worked with herbs for many decades and have shelves and shelves full of works on Herbs and Healing. The German Commission E Monographs is still an often used Reference that in my oppinion belongs on everyone's shelf who works with Herbs. True, it does not cover all that the herbs are capable of and due to lack of proof, many wonderful herbs are not approved, BUT, and this is most important, whatever you find in this book is scientifically proven and you can believe it. I VERY strongly recomend this book, and the CD as well.Whenever you explore a new herb, or need to know facts, check it out in the Commission E Monographs. Then you have a very good outline from where you can start to work with, and together with other herbals get to know and experiment to arrive at your own conclusion. And that is not to mention the inclusion of interaction with other drugs, side effects, mode of administration, active composition for each monograph and different chapters that cover all that is important.A MUST for every practitioner and professional. A MUST for Everyone involved in healing, period. If you can only buy one book on herbs, I would recomend this one. Herbs are gentle and effective healers as a rule. That does not mean that when handeled and prescribed wrong they can't be fatal and dangerous as well.Due to a long time of suppression, there's much information that is doubtful at best, plain wrong and harmful at worst. So even if it's not always approving old favorites, and not mentioning all properties of all herbs, it is an amazing work. Non Nonsense and you can count on everything it says to be true. Five Stars? No way, but that's the maximum available. I would give it many more if I could. But YOU be the judge. Check it out for yourself in a store if in doubt. But don't let this work pass you without giving it a chance. It is truly a treassure. ... Read more

My doctor recently recommended that I get D'Adamo's book "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type" and this supplemental handbook. This supplemental handbook is very handy to take with me to the grocery store to help me shop for the right foods. The book is organized nicely into all the different food categories so that I can quickly find what I am looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unwieldy in Every Sense, Needs Revision
I give this book three stars because I don't regret buying it, and I've used it frequently.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Foods are conveniently organized alphabetically, but portions are not clear so it's difficult to use when trying to track calories.Example, grapefruit shown by size (diameter) - would be more accurate and convenient if all foods were shown in ounces and if the portion preceded nutritional content on every line.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uniform measurements, please!
We have been using this book for about a decade, and appreciate that it does seem to include every morsel of food in a supermarket aisle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Reference for Purse
This booklet is a handy one to carry in my purse when grocery shoppiing. It provides lists of the foods I can eat which are good for my blood type.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about your blood type
Not only did I learn where in world history my blood type "originated", but I also know now why a low-carb diet has been the best thing to ever happen to me.The low-carb lifestyle concentrates on eliminating certain foods from my diet, and those foods just so happen to be bad for me as a type O anyway! It's great! In the same vein, the reason low-carb did not work for my type-A husband is because the food we thought he was supposed to be eating was the same food that can be "poison" for his particular blood type.Problem solved! This book was very helpful to us both.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy pocket reference for blood type B diets.
So now that you've read Eat Right For Your Type and are familiar with the basic theories behind the blood type diets, you need a list that you can grab and take with you on those grocery shopping trips or for those dinners out where you may find menu items that you can't quite remember as either Recommended, Neutral, or Avoid. This is one of those pocket references that was made to be convenient for these situations if you happen to be a type B like most of my family.

    Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many People can be helped with a lower carbohydrate approach.
The Atkins Diet was the first one I tried after I got serious about losing weight and controlling my type 2 diabetes. After being in the induction period for a week, I lost ten pounds. However, I found that it was too difficult to adhere to for an extended period of time. I decided to try a moderate carbohydrate approach coupled with eating foods with a low glycemic impact, eating foods with a lower energy density, and regular exercise.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to lose weight, but its not for the long term
When this diet first came out I got on it and lost about 40 pounds.I kept at it and for quite a while stayed really thin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips & Ideas On Safely Eating Out With Gluten/Food Allergies!
This book has been very helpful as a mom of a 2 yr old food allergy child. When my daughter was diagnosed with a couple of severe food allergies and many sensitivies, we had not dined out for a while. This book has helped to truly understand what to look out for and how to manage the eating out process. It's easy to use and I was impressed by the tips and knowledge relating to dealing with the specific top 10 allergens when dining out.Not only does it deal with the 10 allergens but relates them to each of the 7 cuisines such as Indian, American Steak and Seafood, French, etc. giving helpful tips on how allergens may be "hidden" or used in preparation that you would never expect. The book helps you to identify these items and communicate effectively with the restaurant staff. In addition, there is also useful information on safely choosing snacks when you are out, travel, etc.The book has helped me gain confidence in dining out as a family again. The book is a great read for those with celiac, food allergies or even parents of children with food allergies!
5-0 out of 5 stars the first of its kind
"Let's Eat Out!" will make you hungry and give you the power to protect yourself from food allergies at the same time. This series is an amazingly comprehensive guide that is sure to help thousands of people to feel more in control of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to learn patterns for ears and hands
I am very pleased to use this book along with a previous purcahsed VHS from the author. It is clear, definitive and well written. It will help me as I teach reflexology to my students.Charts are very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising technique
Okay, so I'm a nurse and dedicated to the medical establishment from which I draw my livelihood!I also have great respect for scientific methodology. That said, I also have to admit to an innate curiosity about alternative approaches to health care, and so when my license needed 30 CEUs for renewal, one of the courses I decided to take was one on reflexology.I purchased The Joy of Reflexology for that course and began reading it with more than a little skepticism.Although it suggested that practicing the art on oneself was less effective than doing so on another subject, I happened to have no one else at hand on whom to practice the techniques, so it was me or nobody.I was totally prepared to pooh-pooh the entire thing as so much bumpkin, when I discovered that the very unpleasant hip pain from which I was suffering at the time resolved and didn't return when certain pressure points on my feet were massaged as indicated in the text.Since I had been kept awake nights over the preceding several months, turning over and repositioning myself about every half hour trying find a more comfortable way to rest, I can tell you I was fully prepared to eat crow when the massage technique worked!True, a population of 1 isn't the best statistics, and a test on oneself is hardly the makings of a double blind study. So, coincidence?Maybe. But I got the first uninterrupted eight hours of sleep I'd gotten in months!I'll take it.Thank you Miss Gillanders.

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad, but can be a lot better
The book is not bad, really, and it does contain useful information about reflexology, however I would describe its layout as nothing but sloppy. Many repeated pictures and explanations lead me to think the authors tried to make the book longer (thinker...) than it has to be. Realistically, you would be more likely to buy this book if it is 120 pages, than if it is only 60 pages :-).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version even better than the first one
This book, as well as the concept of avoiding Monosodium Glutamate (and MSG by its 80 other names) explains a way of life we should all live by.It is in-depth, yet very easy to read and understand. The author explains in a comprehensive way, how you can live in America and still choose to eat for your health-she tells you how to do just that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book first
I bought my first copy in 1999 when I suffered from disabling migraines. As I began to learn about food and what to avoid I began to gain control over my migraines. I still buy this book to give to others who seem most appreciative. I also can not understand why anyone would discount this book.It gives a clear and concise overview of the problem many people have with food sensitivity but don't comprehend. If people want to go on further and experiment with vitamins and supplements that is fine.I personally am willing to make some dietary changes to have a better quality of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information to a better and healthy you.
Got this book in Febuary 2006, read the book from cover to cover. The information has helped change my life after the doctor told me I had Fibromalygia. (I'm pain free now....) The recipes in the book are great and has helped me come up with some new ones on my own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The proof is in the pudding ...
While I acknowledge the truth that opinions are like a-holes...everyone has one...and I honor the right of free expression, I think some folks don't know the difference between the two. Those who blast something they haven't even tried and claim to be scientists are actually hilarious to me.5-0 out of 5 stars Is dieting an exact science?
I think the "blood type" lifestyle is one that does work. What I can say..... is that I have been "eating right for my type" for three years now; and have maintained my weight and never feel like I am "dieting." While pregnant, I followed this plan about 80% and after I delivered, I followed it 100%.I gained 52lbs. during pregnancy and within 14 weeks, I had lost it all!!I think with any diet, you have to find the one that works best for YOU.My immediate, and most of my extended family, follow this method and it apparently works for all of them, so scientific or not, we are maintaining fabulous results. Who said dieting was an exact science anyway?

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Science (1 star is as low as it goes)
This idea that foods are "bad" for someone is not supportable with science. ANY food in great levels is "bad." NO food (That one is not allergic to) ia any worse than any other. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Soy!
I am amazed how people who obviously haven't even read the book are making negative comments.HELLO!Did you know that at LEAST 75% of the soybeans in THIS COUNTRY are genetically modified?!?!?!?!?And you think that is good for you.Wake up people. If you are interested in changing to a soy diet or are on a soy diet - you should read the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book MUST be something
Came here to buy the book after yesterday's reportage about dangers of soy in San Francisco Chronicle. Had no plans to write but given the sheer hate spewed by so many nasty vicious reviewers this book has to be really something!!!I'm a believer in the right to free speech but a lot of these 1 star reviews sound like slander. Joseph Mercola, Larry Dossey, Doris Rapp, Kilmer MacCully and other authors have read this book and would not have recommended it without good reason.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is propaganda, don't buy it
The publisher of this book also publishes a book about the "fallacy" that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease.Saturated fat and cholesterol have been demonstrated in study after study to cause heart disease. This publisher is nothing more than a shill for the meat and dairy industry. ... Read more
