5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook, Diet or Regular
This is my family's favorite cookbook. The recipes are fun and I haven't hit a dud yet. When I cook from it my family doesn't know I am cooking "light", they just think it is delicious. I have shared more recipies from this cookbook than any other I own.I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone, not just those who are on the Weight Watcher's plan.We are eating yet another recipe from this tonight.I can hardly wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Restaurant Meals at home

5-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, but important
I agree that the book can be repetitive at times, but it gives a lot of important and clear information on the history and benefits of the Mediterranean diet that should not be missed. I think that if this is the lifestyle that you wish to persue(and I think most should), then this book needs to be one of the books on your shelf along with The Omega Diet and The Fat Fallacy. If you would like to find recipes that support this lifestyle, Italian Cooking For Dummies has detailed explanation of ingredients as well as recipes and Lidia's Family Table has some wonderful recipes in it. Most ethnic cookbooks of the region will work, keeping in mind that portion control and quality ingredients are the cornerstone of this diet as well as the ratio of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I should add that many of the recipes in vegetarian cookbooks as well as whole food cookbooks will also fall under a Mediterranean lifestyle. Quality not quantity will buy us the health we want.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, clear approach to eating well and staying healthy
Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet is one of the safest and healthiest in the world. People who follow it have significantly lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. This book offers dietary wisdom and practical advice in language that is easy to understand. In addition to providing nutritional information, an eating plan, and an exercise plan, it emphasizes the importance of strong social ties and of dealing with stress efficiently.
3-0 out of 5 stars The only reason I am giving this three stars instead of two
is because it is obvious the authors put a lot of time into this and really believe in what they are saying. However, I found this book to be repetitive in places, so much so, I had to skim over certain pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review by former Physiology Fellow/Biochemist....
What I liked about the book is that it tells the truth about exercise and the need to eat good food. This isn't information that you can't find in many other places, but given this is a bestseller I'm happy to see this position take front and center.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to follow guide to feeling years younger!
Despite America's obsession with dieting, study after study indicates that we are losing the war over our waistlines. Adding to the confusion about dieting is the sheer number of contradictory and competing diet plans. What seperates The Take Control Diet from other health guides is: Three things. The first thing is that most diet books don't talk about the psychology of weight loss. The inability to put your mind in the right place to fight one of the biggest battles of your life means that your body will not be able to go into the right place. Ian's book starts off in chapter one talking about the mental warfare that you have to get ready for when trying to lose weight. That's number one. Number two, most of the diet books do not talk about exercise. They give you a food program. They give you menu options, but they don't say, This is what you need to do from the physical activity standpoint to lose weight. All they say is just exercise. Take Control Diet helps you structure an exercise program. And third, most of the diet programs do not have foods that are palatable, that people are used to eating or want to eat. Ian's diet allows you to eat regular food, nothing packaged. But it teaches you how to eat these foods and in what proportions, to lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars ***** The 'Two' Wisemen Write the Bible on Body-Mind-Spirit Wellness *****

5-0 out of 5 stars An articulate guide to personalized nutrition based upon over sixty years of medical nutrition research
Your Personal Life: Measuring What Your Specific Body Needs To Live Lean, Long, Strong & Better by clinical bionutritionist, wellness practitioner, author, speaker, and bodybuilder Greg Tefft (with the assistance of author, songwriter, parenting expert, and president of the Angel Mind media company) is an articulate guide to personalized nutrition based upon over sixty years of medical nutrition research. Chapters explore why most touted diet systems are ineffective for long-term weight loss (for one thing, far too many diets come in a false one-size-fits-all concept), techniques for making positive and beneficial changes in lifestyle and eating habits, how to apply nutrition therapy and toxin elimination therapy, how to determine one's own nutritional prognosis and take control of one's health, and much more. Written for lay readers, Your Personal Life translates advanced health professional wisdom and technical concepts into solid, easy-to-follow guidelines for improving quality of life. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars I've found it to be tremendously helpful.
This book is your own manual for your own body. To be healthy you have to understand all of the various bodily functions, how they work, and what you need to do to keep everything running smoothly and in a healthy state. But it is difficult to please everyone when presenting a book like this. The summary information is useful. This book provides the necessary information in simple terms as a guide to take care of your body from your internal organs point of view. This manual tells you the type of food that will help your body run well. The main focus of the book is the heart and digestive system which I've found to be tremendously helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Age Diet
This is a very practical and easy to understand book. It is not another "diet" book, rather, it encourages a life style change. I have recommended to to many of my friends who have expressed similar thoughts about it. I like that it addresses supplements and foods it terms of value and amount.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT guide and information. GREAT!!
I have heard a lot about superfoods for some time but have not seen many books devoted to the topic and that explain the super foods well. This book is wonderful and highlights 14 super foods and the related family member foods. It explains why they are super in a way that is understandable and valuable. One of the best and most useable books I have read on this subject. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BooK
This book is filled with the nutritional information that we all need to be healthy. It's sad how lazy our society has become when we won't even take the time to throw a few things that are healthy together and instead eat processed death food at Mickey D's.Great Book, easy to read, interesting all the way through, easy to put into practice and comes with not only recipes but lists of suppliers for healthy eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cornerstone of healthy eating.
My research has indicated that their are four principles of effective weight and blood sugar management. They are (1) Nutritional balance, (2) Eating foods with a low glycemic impact, (3) Eating foods with a lower energy density and (4) Regular Exercise. This book and its companion "SuperFoods HealthStyle" are definitely the apexof nutritional balance. The recommended foods are also highly supportive of the other principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars energetic understanding
Wow! After reading this book I could actually understand how this type of cooking affects me energetically. Getting in touch with the yin and yang of food and literally feel it affect me has been an invaluable experience. Ms. Porter expression of macrobiotics is clear enough that I could 'get' it through even just one day of eating macro and now I am hooked. Thank you for your honest, open hearted and enthusiastic guide, I will happily refer to it for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun way to go macro
This book was a godsend for me. I have been interested in macrobiotics since I first became aware of it through Madonna (cheesy, I know, but Jessica Porter talks about her a lot, too!). At that time, I didn't get the philosophy part of it and wasn't willing to cut out dairy and sugar. Well, now I am and was reluctant to get into macrobiotics because I had found the info on it dry and confusing. That is why I loved this book! It helped me understand macro and I also love that the author is very forgiving. Great book! If you are even remotely interested (especially if you're just "remotely" interested) give this book a chance!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
I was macro quite a few years ago, but had let it fall to the wayside. When I considered taking it up again, I came across this book.I had some reservations, but the reviews were all so positive that I gave it a shot.I'm so glad I did!I read it continually for almost a month!I skipped around reading chapters that interested me at first, but eventually discovered the entire book was well worth poring over.It makes macrobiotics extremely accessible and I love that she writes about her own experiences and failings on the road to becoming macrobiotic. It took off the pressure I was putting on myself to overhaul my life and go "whole hog" all at once.It let me know it's okay to stumble along the way!The recipes are also great, as are the resources in the back of the book.If you're a westerner and considering macrobiotics, give this book a try. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for yourself and/or as a gift!!
This book is well researched (including Western science and Eastern traditions), full of excellent advice and written in easy to read, enjoyable snippets, not to mention that each page is designed with artwork and a nice visual layout. Despite what another reviewer wrote, this book has plenty of info that you probably have never heard before on topics ranging from diet and nutrition, chinese and western herbal medicines, the environment, ecology and community, exercise, lifestyle and rejuvenation, genetics, relationships, love, sexuality and faith, and the last chapter brings it all together. 1-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Longevity

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book That's Saving Our Lives and Health
My husband and I have eased into this program slowly and gradually. Over the weeks we've integrated healthy, organic foods and replaced unhealthy food choices with fresh fruits, vegetables and kosher meats. We've slowly added certain healthy supplements as well and we BOTH feel an incredible change in our physical health. We've both been so close to death's door, we had to do something and this was a lifesaver. We're on our way to restoration, thanks to this book. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit
I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting.Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results.Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects.I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
I have tried many receipes from this book, and there is only only one that I won't make again. Not only are the receipes in the book excellant, but I have used the book as a resource for changing other receipes to use Splenda. I have also modified some of the book's receipes to use more whole grains with good results. We like the fact that not only do the receipes use Splenda, but they are also low in fat.My only complaint is that the book does not show the number of grams of sugar, as we don't use the Diabetic exchange method, but use the food index and load information.I also have her prior book "Unbelievable Desserts with Splenda" which does give the sugar grams with the carbohydrate grams. However, I like this book better because it provides receipes for a wider variety of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes deliver tasty but healthy treats
I received "Fantastic Food with Splenda" as a gift, and what a treat! While you could confidently serve these recipes for company, this is a cookbook you'll use everyday, not just when cooking for special occasions. Author Marlene Koch's dedication and nutritional expertise show through in the well-crafted introductory chapters where she shares solid information on ingredients, techniques and dietary issues as well as in the balanced selection of recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I CAN EAT DESSERTS AGAIN!!!
This is a great cookbook and I've been pleased with the recipes I've tried so far.The desserts are excellent and we've had a lot of fun trying them out.Best of all, they are guilt-free!I watch my calorie count every day and many of the desserts are only 100-200 calories.I am looking forward to trying out several of the mixed drink recipes, too. This is a cookbook that covers all types of foods from appetizers to desserts and is a great way to eat healthier.I love that the nutritional information is listed for each recipes, as well as helpful notes for many of them.I wish there were pictures instead of illustrations, but other than that, it's a great addition to my cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only cookbook you'll ever need. It's that good!
I bought this book because I was looking for recipes using Splenda, and were low in sugar, fat and calories as my husband is a newly diagnosed diabetic. I tried the Banana Muffins recipe first, fully expecting them to taste like "diet food." Wow! Editorial Review

According to author Loren Cordain, modern health and diet problems didn't start with the advent of packaged snack food, but much earlier--back at the dawn of the agricultural age many thousands of years ago. As humans became less nomadic and more dependent on high-carbohydrate diets, we left behind the diet we had evolved with, which is based on low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Sugars, fats, and carbs were rare, if they were present at all, and survival required a steady, if low-key, level of activity. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Stricter Variation of the South Beach/Atkins Diet
This diet elimninates starches and grains, sugar, of course, legumes and dairy products and makes the case for us eating like our ancestors. Good examples and receipies. May be hard to follow completely in its purest form.

2-0 out of 5 stars Closer to healthy than atkins, but not quite there.
The Paleo Diet is based on an interesting premise- the idea that what we ate before agriculture suited our needs perfectly because our bodies had been bred by evolution in response to our what we could find to eat in our environment. It seems like a giant leap to assume our paleolithic ancestors naturally gravitated towards exactly what we need to eat. Animals in the wild do make sensible choices most of the time, because their decisions are instinctual. Self-awareness creates a problem that doesn't exist for other animal behavior as it does for humans. Sometimes we do things out of curiosity, or laziness, or false beliefs. So, considering the erratic behavior of present-day humans, who is to say our paleolithic ancestors were any more intuitive about their nutritive needs? Even the book suggests humans ate what they did out of trial and error, frequently just trying whatever they encountered in the wild.

5-0 out of 5 stars it works
my doctor put me on Actose in January of 2006 and by June, my blood sugar was still out of control and my weight was 306 lbs.I read about this while researching on the web and thought i would give it a try. From July 18 to Sept 15 I have lost 34 lbs. My blood sugar stays below 100 even after meals, and I have more energy than i have had in 20 years.Read this book and stick to it like your life depends on it, and it WILL work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been more info on book
I was upset with the book.My mistake, but was unaware he has and is writing this book as a man with type 1 diabetes.I am just learning about the disease since being diagnosed, but am type 2 and there is a world of differnce between the both of them.It scared me and I put the book down and will not read any more of it.I got other books that are helping me adjust to this illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Follow-on to Diabetes Solution
Great follow-on to Dr. Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution". He takes the ADA to task and rightly so. His approach gets results right from day one. This second book provides an abbreviated but adequate explanation of his approach to living with diabetes and is supplemented with excellent low carbohydrate recipes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars would not be 1st choice
Be careful if you take this book into the kitchen. It is printed on the cheapest of papers and tears and damages easily if it gets wet. The recipes are o.k.; the information is o.k., although conflicts with some information in her Coconut Diet book, but nothing very interesting or inspirational is shared.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Information
I bought this book to add juice to my diet as well as for a juice fast to detox. However, this book is missing important information on this topic. This book is very helpful for ADDING more juice to your diet, but it doesn't cover the necessary information on a strict juice diet commonly used for cleansing (detoxing), illness, and weight loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative...well laid out & easy to read
This book is EXCELLENT and one which I highly recommend. Yes...it's from 1992 but it all still stands true. The one thing about eating this type of food/juice and eating this way in general is that the underlying benefits and facts don't change. It certainly is not a fad but based on principles that stand the test of time. You can buy a book on this subject that is 50 years old or one that is brand new...they will say pretty much the same thing. This book is very well laid out tho' and is packed with a wealth of information. It points out the benefits of juicing and what each vegetable and fruit is good for...and how to drink them, along with some excellent recipes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more
