I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be.They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first.A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side.I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone.Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones.I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexy Years:Discover the Hormone Connection
This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many People can be helped with a lower carbohydrate approach.
The Atkins Diet was the first one I tried after I got serious about losing weight and controlling my type 2 diabetes. After being in the induction period for a week, I lost ten pounds. However, I found that it was too difficult to adhere to for an extended period of time. I decided to try a moderate carbohydrate approach coupled with eating foods with a low glycemic impact, eating foods with a lower energy density, and regular exercise.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to lose weight, but its not for the long term
When this diet first came out I got on it and lost about 40 pounds.I kept at it and for quite a while stayed really thin.

4-0 out of 5 stars This certainly is a purist's view, but that doesn't make it bad
I see a lot of critics of the Ornish diet suggested in the book; however, it certainly seems as if there is a lot of data available to document the results and support the promotion of the Ornish diet. However, I would strongly suggest reading both Dr. Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease and Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on the same.I think that the Whitaker book provides a much more practical view and also displays what may be a good diet (and life-style, etc) for (1) a healthy person that wants to prevent possibility of heart disease, a "preventative" approach, and (2) a person who has heart disease and needs a "reversal" approach. That said, Dr. Ornish's book is an eye-opener and does cause a concerned reader to focus on the level of discipline and focus that a "reversal" diet and life-style requires.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there these days
After my older brother suddenly died of coronary artery disease at age 40 due to genetically high cholesterol, I needed to learn everything possible on the subject so that I could avoid suffering the same fate.I read all the books on the shelf, among them Dr. Ornish's.I disliked this book because it is rather narcissistic and is focused more on Dr. Ornish himself than on educating us about how to avoid heart disease.Take a look at chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean: "I was trained to treat hypertension..."; "I first became interested in conducting research on heart disease in 1975..."; "I began to wonder..."; "I went to the medical library and began reading extensively"; "It seemed like an exciting opportunity, so in 1977 I decided to take a year off..."; "I hadn't had enough clinical experience to be jaded..."; "I was unwittingly giving many of them hope for the first time since their illness had been diagnosed"; "I went back to medical school and graduated in 1980"; "From 1981 to 1984, I completed my internship and medical residency in Boston."; "In July 1984, I moved to San Francisco..."This is just the tedious first six pages.Trust me, it goes on and on like this.Do you want to learn about how the heart works? You'll finally get a few sentences on that subject when you get to page 42, squeezed in between more "I did this and I did that."You'll get a little info on LDL and HDL when you get to page 51.Sure, there is useful information within the 672 pages of this book, but you'll be forced to become an expert on Dr. Ornish and his life story to find it.And remember, this book is more than 15 years old.Perhaps back in 1990 he needed to devote 300 pages to convincing people that he was correct in believing that diet, exercise, and stress affect your risk of heart disease, but that that is common knowledge and not controversial now.The research is far more advanced in today's world. If you are interested in Dr. Ornish personally and the history of the study of heart disease in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll probably enjoy this book. But if you are serious about educating yourself on heart disease and how best to avoid it, I would recommend Dr. Robert Superko's "Before the Heart Attacks : A Revolutionary Approach to Detecting, Preventing, and Even Reversing Heart Disease" (2003) or Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz's "The Expert Guide to Beating Heart Disease: What You Absolutely Must Know" (2005).These books are more up to date and provide far more useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When I follow the diet and work on the other aspects of the program I feel better, lose weight, am happier and have better test results. The book is easy to read and understand. The program is not for the die hard meat lover. It takes commitment to follow. From the reviews I have read and comments from coworkers and friends, it also takes an open mind and balanced attention.I am currently purchasing this book for my adult son.It all depends on what a reader is looking for.Dr. Ornish does not give a quick fix.I am a believer. ... Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins is amazing!
This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry.I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back).Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solutions Manuel
This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them.Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts I had while in college
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry.Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts.Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters.End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful).Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization.I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them. ... The Adkins diet works because decreasing your carb intake decreases your calorie intake and it also works by your body loosing significant fluids secondary to increased urine excretions of ketones (from fat burning) and nitrogen (from use of protein for energy rather than the body's first choice of glucose from carbs).

    Editorial Review

"I got skinny on fat," claims Suzanne Somers. It sounds too good to be true--a weight-loss program that lets you "eat incredible, rich foods in abundant portions while the unwanted pounds effortlessly melt away." Most nutritionists would cringe at the idea that people trying to lose weight don't need to restrict their dietary fat, but Suzanne Somers and her "Somercizers" insist it works. Fat (even saturated fat) isn't the enemy, she claims--it's "products loaded with sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, and chemicals and preservatives that replace Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed my Life
At 16 years old, I was gravely obese at 330 lbs.I was depressed and desperate, trying things from cutting portions to, at one point, eating nothing but bread and water for two weeks.I still gained weight no matter what I did.
2-0 out of 5 stars Suzanne Somers is giving middle aged women false hope
Suzanne Somers is partial scam artist. She claims that if you follow the advice in her books, prepare her recipes, use her skin products, etc. you can look as good as she does for her age. She never mentions all the cosmetic surgery and lipo suction she has had done. I know a number of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists, and they all claim that there is no way that her face and body can look as good as it does for her age without Cosmetic Surgery on her face and body and touch-ups along the way. However, her books with their beautiful pictures of her and her recipes are lovely to look at but she is giving women who are in their 50's and beyond false hope. She should really write a book about all the work she has had done, what it was like, the cost (which the average woman cannot afford), etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suzanne or Marilu--who will be your guru?
I have just read this book as well as Marilu Henner's book.In some ways they are similar: both feature beautiful, healthy, glamourous, rich, 70s-sitcom-starring celebrities. Both claim to have discovered the secrets to health and vitality and slimness. Both are enjoyable to read and seem like someone you'd like to have as a friend. But the food...there's the big difference. Being an aficionado of the famous Eat Right 4 Your Type way of eating I have discovered that as a type O+ I feel much better on a protein/veggies/fruits regimen versus an almost vegetarian (fishaterian?) grains and veggies approach. I spent 6 years basically doing the Henner approach but found a much higher energy level and ability to maintain a healthy weight AFTER I quit eating so much starch and started eating meat again. As I read this book I couldn't help but notice that it is very close to what Dr. D'adamo recommends for Blood Type As in his book; lots of soy, grains and legumes, avoiding dairy and meat and keeping fat intake low. I am convinced that this is the best approach for some people, probably the Type As! Suzanne Somers' book which allows meats, dairy and fat (properly combined of course) works really well for me and probably other type Os who really do need protein to maintain their health and energy. Speaking strictly as a cook and an enthusiastic eater, the Somers book is much more fun. I found recipes in this book that I will definitely use. Therefore, my advice to these readers is: If you are a type O, then check out Suzanne's (and Peter D'adamo's ER4YT of course!) book and enjoy a tasty dinner!!!An aside--I saw Ms Sommers in person in Palm springs two years ago and she looks absolutely lovely. She must be doing something right! ... I was very disappointed in this book even though it was a miniature. Some of the pages were blank, having not even been printed.I figure the book was a total loss of money spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eat as much as you want.
Sticking to the diet in the book I lost 35 lbs in five months.I find, interesting the fact that I can eat as much, or even more that I need as long as I keep the named proteins and carbs separate. This is the second copy of the book I have purchased and did so for my son and his family. He needs to lose about 20 pounds. I suggested that he follow the book suggestions very strickly and he should attain his goal.

It just didn't fit my life style anymore, and I had a REALLY hard time refraining from cheating, and incorporating resturaunt and "non-menu" meals to fit my plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was surprised that this is such a good book
When I see Suzanne Somers I just see Chrissy from Three's Company and all that snorting and dumb blonde-ing!I never paid any attention to any of the Suzanne Somers books because I figured this was just another celebrity attaching their persona to something. My library happened to have this on the shelf and since I had some time to kill while waiting for my daughter to pick out her books I decided to flip through the recipe section since I knew it was a low carb type of diet and I do atkins.I was very interested at what I saw so I checked it out.I have been totally shocked at how easy and terrific her ideas are and in fact her philosophy is quite interesting too.I am really impressed.I have a totally different viewpoint now of Suzanne Somers.I love this recipe book so much I had to buy it so I"d have a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great recipes!!
My husband & I just started the South Beach diet.Since Somersizing is a very similar concept (similar to Atkins too), I thought I'd check out these recipes. The book explains the concept of cutting out sugar & sugar forming carbohydrates (anything containing white flour). I looked into the other somersizing books & this one really has the best recipes. So far I've only tried a few & they were very delicious. The cream cheese pancakes & balsamic dijon chicken are yummy.I also bought Somersweet, some of the recipes call for it, but you can use Splenda or other sweeteners instead. All of the recipes in this book are appealing as well as healthy. And they are fast & easy to make. ... Editorial Review

Ingeniously disguised as a weight-loss manual, this bestselling guide to preventing--and in some cases, reversing--heart disease through diet, exercise, and soul nourishing comes from renowned cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, the first doctor to prove that there are alternatives to surgery for clearing clogged arteries--namely, diet, exercise, and stress management. Citing his own published research findings, Ornish concludes that eating a vegetarian diet with only 10 percent of the total daily calories from fat is the first step to healthier, happier living. The other key elements--moderate exercise, fostering social support, and reconnecting with the self--take more time and care. For these, Ornish offers about 75 pages of encouraging words, again backed by numerous research findings and his personal experiences. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great diet.
Wonderfully healthful diet, and with a little exercise (my wife and I walked for about 25 minutes, three times a week) you'll lose like crazy. We added fish to the diet (not fried) and still did really well. One thing:the recipes in the book are a little tough. We recommend his everyday recipe book to solve the problem.

I'm familiar with Dr. Ornish's other books. This one did not come up to standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some common sense
Some of the reviews I read before I bought this would make you think Mr. Ornish is a Nazi.In a society where we are looking for a pill to cure everything instead of using a little self discipline I suppose you could think that. This book is a simple straight forward approach to eating the way nature designed us instead of the way fast food has trained us.If you're looking for a healthy life and maybe to drop some pounds too, and you are ready to be realistic about it, buy this book and his cookbook. The food is great and you won't miss the stuff you give up. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
I was very pleased with this book! It made counting daily carbs and sticking to the Atkins' diet plan a lot easier. It also showed you how to eat real food, not just diet food, as well as restaurant and fast food. I would highly recommend this book to anyone counting carbs!!!!!

Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 12 Punishing weeks of kick-butt work!
This book is very similar to another book the author wrote about fitness and dieting. The format is the basically the same with the first 60 pages covering emotional eating and the psychological aspects of dealing with food. The last 30 pages is a survey of current diets such as Atkins, Weight Watchers and others. The middle of the book includes a lot on specific weight-lifting exercises and aerobics. A concept I really like is the 5 Simple Eating Rules, which can be harder than you think. I also appreciated the very descriptive tables outlining the whole 12 week program of exercises. I gave 4 stars because I could have done without the emotional eating and diet survey sections. All that said, it's well written and motivating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great motivation for anyone wanting to get into shape.

I HAVE BEEN SOMERSIZING FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS AND HAVE ENJOYED THE FOOD RECIPES IN SUZANNE SOMERS 3 BOOKS, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY THIS DESSERT BOOK.SO FAR I HAVE LOST 10 LBS AND AM LOVING THE RESULTS WITHOUT STARVING MYSELF.HER PROGRAM IS TRUELY A WAY TO LIVE BY.YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE HER PRODUCTS, BECAUSE SHE GIVES YOU MOST OF THE RECIPES IN HER BOOKS, I LIKE THAT!THIS DESSERT BOOK DID FALL SHORT THOUGH COMPARED TO THE OTHER WONDERFUL BOOKS.I HAVE TRIED THE CHEESECAKE WHICH IS OK, BUT WHEN YOUR EARLY ON HAVING THE SUGAR CRAVINGS IT LEAVES SOMETHING TO BE DESIRED, I SUFFERD THROUGH.WE ALSO TRIED THE ICE CREAM AND THE PREVIOUS REVIEW IS EXACTLY RIGHT, THE SOMERSWEET MAKES THE ICE CREAM HARD AS A ROCK, IT WASNT VERY GOOD.I HAVE YET TO TRY ANY OTHER RECIPES.THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY LOOK MORE LIKE THE DESSERTS I AM USED TO ARE ON LEVEL 2, SO I GUESS WE JUST HAVE TO SUFFER THROUGH.I HAVE MADE A GOOD MOUSSE DESSERT USING SUGAR FREE CHOC PUDDING AND CREAM, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE AN ALMOST LEVEL ONE.I PERSONALLY WOULDNT WASTE THE $ ON THIS BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with a little help.
I have tried a couple of desserts and they worked great. I used Splenda as sweetner with no problem. I also substituted lower fat dairy products. I love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who know what they want!
This book is great for those who know what they want, that is, desserts that fit into their Somersizing way of eating, as well as a love for baking. If you have given up sugar and are no longer craving the sickening sweet things you previously ate, then these recipes are perfect. The creme brulee is rich and creamy and just sweet enough. After all, aren't we supposed to be adjusting to a healthier lifestyle? If what you want is a rich ice cream sundae that makes your teeth ache, then this book isn't for you.But if you have given up sweets, and find the sweetness of natural fruit to be sweet enough and have a love of baking and cooking, then these recipes will do the trick. My family loved them, too. ...
