5-0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to using juice for
I found this book to be one of the better sources of information regarding fasting. It takes a subject that is somewhat taboo and breaks it down into simple and understandable terms. I think it's worth reading even if you don't want to practice what is being discussed. It never hurts to understand what is going on even if you don't want to do it. I will tell you this, I have followed this book and a few others and have made tremendous gains. Not in weight but in my health. One of the benefits that can't be touted enough is the true feeling of being in control of your own body. Once you get that feeling you lose this sense of helplessness and understand that your health is your own responsibility.
5-0 out of 5 stars a bit flawed but great
I read the good Doctor's book Eat to Live and then bought China Study which he talks a lot about in this book. Then I bought this book being curious after reading a few other books on fasting and this book wins hands down though I do feel he's being overly cautious about doing long fasts of more than 5 days without medical supervision to protect himself as people have been doing long fasts for centuries without medical supervision and doing just fine and since finding a Doctor in even a large community is rare indeed one is left to do this on their own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your choice.
Nature's way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real science, not junk science
I joined Weight Watchers 11 weeks ago. I've lost 47 pounds to date, and couldn't be more pleased. I saw this book on their web site and ordered it because I am really getting into the science of weight loss. This book takes on and refutes a number of myths. They're actually quite fair, acknowledging the bits of truth embedded in each before presenting the larger truth. It's done in a very sound, calm manner, without being boring or pedantic. And there's true science behind all of it, not the junk science of the South Beach Diet for example. I even had one of my own beliefs refuted, the supposed metabolic after-glow from aerobic exercise. The only problem is there are Weight Watchers testimonials inserted every few pages, interfering with the flow. But at this price, I'm not going to complain further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good weightloss book
The price is right and the information is very eye-opening.
3-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Already Knew But Didn't Want to be Told
You can forget the herbs, supplements, enzymes, and stress and fat blockers. The few prescription diet pills that work have side effects worse than the cure.If there is anything easy about weight control why do we have record obesity and more and more gastric bypass surgery? The low fat and low carb diets are just gimmicks akin to the grapefruit, boiled egg, cabbage soup and drinking man's diets. These diets may work short term, but they're not substainable. How many grapefruit can you eat and for how long?Bottom line, it's all about calories in - calories out, regardlesss of what you consume to get the calories.Losing requires a calorie deficit, more calories out than in.EXERCISE!An OK book, but really a 200+ page solicitation to join Weight Watchers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is in reply to M. Korogodsky "Michael" stating that this book is "useless", and rating it 1 star:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to start Raw
This was one of the first books I got when I started going raw about a month ago (by the way, I have lost close to 15 lbs since going raw, and I haven't even had time to do much exercising yet). The other book had gourmet recipes, but what I love about this book is that it has a lot of basic information. There is a sprouting guide and lots of info on how to eat raw. There are also a lot of basic recipes - cheeses, breads, crackers, even whipped cream - that can help you transition.I have only tried a few recipes in the book, but so far, they have been great (I love the chocolate turtles). The only negative I have found so far is that the recipes don't give the number of servings, and since it is always best to eat it right away, it would be nice to know if it needs to be split before making it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite "cookbook"
Alissa Cohen's book is well-written, organized and used in our home. This is the first raw food book that I have purchased and it is worth every penny! Those raw vegan cookbooks that I checked out at the library over the past few months were not inspiring and the recipes "assumed" that the reader had experience with raw vegan cooking/lifestyle like sprouting which is totally a new technique for me.This book makes the raw vegan lifestyle more acceptable, reachable and possible using easy-to-follow recipes that taste good and are created using natural, organic ingredients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational but reasonable
I found this book to be very informative, inspirational, and do-able. Basically, you have to be open-minded to change with respect to diet and lifestyle. But nothing in this book requires drastic change, extreme work-outs, or pressure. On the contrary, Martina encourages readers to gradually adopt changes to your diet and physical activity levels for improved health and fitness. What inspired me to buy this book, as opposed to other work-out books, is Martina, herself.I am 46 years old and have struggled with being out of shape, feeling run down, and basically wanting a better and more healthier lifestyle for myself for awhile now.Martina is living proof that at any age you are never too old to feel better and to be the best you can be. I figure if she can do, so can I. Thanks Martina.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martina Rocks!
I love this book.I have been following her food program now for two weeks and the recipes are delicious!I'll admit that I am a vegetarian and was already into eating organic before I bought this book, so it was easier for me to adapt, but I have learned many new things and ways to enjoy vegetables and fruits. There has not been one single recipe that I haven't loved yet!
5-0 out of 5 stars 6STEPS WITH A CZECH
I loved this book.I found it interesting since I play tennis and am in my forties. Martina's stories and antidotes are amusing and very informative. I learned new exercises and some interesting recipes. She has inspired me to add more raw vegetables and fruits to my diet and to also shop for organic foods. I can't wait to try her recipe for Energy Balls. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves tennis or who is in their forties and wants to get in shape or stay in shape. ... Read more

Diet schemes come and go. Successful plans, backed by powerful media machines, become bestsellers with sequels and food-product lines. But with so many diet books on the market, how do you decide which plan is right for you? According to Peter D'Adamo, the answer depends on your blood type. In his first book, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Food - Nourishment vs. Pollutant
I mustered the courage to go vegetarian about 2 months ago.I had already committed to that when I realized that I was missing the larger point of eating for better health (still using a lot of artificial sweetener, for example).I ordered this book from Amazon and have read it from cover to cover, over and over."The Great American Detox Diet" gave me exactly what I was missing, a broader view of health and information about our food, the food-producing industry and the harmful chemicals lurking in our everyday environment. This is stuff that we all know or have heard about, but this no-nonsense guide puts it all together in an entertaining, easily readable way.Over and above a committment to cruelty-free eating, my everyday choices in food consumption are much better. After the "why", the book also provides the "how", offering over 100 pages of great recipes and menu plans, helpful websites and resources. The recipes I've tried are really yummy (some favorites so far: Mushroom Barley Pilaf, Popeye Spinach Pie, Spicy Sweet Potato Fries and Veggie Loaf - delicious!!!) and I love learning to use different herbs and ingredients.Best of all, my husband, formerly just a meat-and-potatoes guy, eats and enjoys every recipe I try!!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource
At the outset, let's say that Ms. Jamieson does not tell us anything we do not already know. The meat industry is filthy.Dairy is bad for you.You should avoid sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol.I thought this book would be a more specific 8-week diet, on exactly how she got Morgan Spurlock to lose his McBelly. It really wasn't, though she does provide delicious recipes for those enterprising enough to make up their own diets.

5-0 out of 5 stars your search forthe perfectbook on eating disorders is over!
Karen is spot on with this book. Well organized and well written, Karen gets right down to the point that anyone with a eating disorder can relate to. It's easy to refer back to over and over again and great to keep in your tote bag in case of the need for emergancy support. Though she makes the process of normal eating seem like a walk in the park, she reminds the reader that it takes time and effort. But everything she says makes so much sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just have to face the pain
"The Rules of 'Normal' Eating" is a touching, hopeful, helpful. loving and validating book written in everyday language with great humor and wide appeal. Karen Koenig hits on so many dysfunctional eating beliefs, behaviors and feelings that disordered eaters cannot help but see themselves. This book should not just be read by individuals on their journey of recovery, but by the therapists who wish to guide and support them as well. The American culture has become pleasure-seeking and pain-avoidant to the extent that we will often do anything to avoid experiencing emotional discomfort. This book is a reminder that only good can come out of an exploration of what drives us so that we can learn to endure, understand and resolve our emotional pain. This book is the light at the end of the tunnel that replaces the light at the back of the fridge. This book was the answer to years of questions that my pool of doctors failed to answer adequately.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
I think this book is a must-read for any woman with PCOS. I've had PCOS and severe insulin resistance for seventeen years and I felt hopeless about being able to manage it, but this book shows you that small, gradual changes can make a difference. The authors have taught me that losing weight doesn't have to be the main focus, increasing insulin sensitivity is the focus and then everything else follows. They also say that if you exercise but still don't lose weight you are still increasing your insulin sensitivity and therefore reducing symptoms, which I think is a great motivator. The only thing I feel this book misses out is the importance of organic food for health, but apart from that I feel it imparts a sense of optimism and empowerment for PCOS sufferers. I thank the authors from the bottom of my heart. ... Read more

It's amazing to see the explosion in books offering veganism as the solution to the world's ills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential forAnyone Looking to Prevent Chronic Disease
The author writes with zeal about the "new medicine" - vegan diet.Full of references and detail, this is a solid discussion of how chronic disease can be prevented (and managed/reveresed) with diet.As a vegan for over 3 years and a Registered Nurse, I thought I knew it all, but this book proved me wrong.Your average physician is going to do one thing, wait until you have disease and then prescribe medication or surgery to "manage it."You can do better.Take matters into your own hands and read this book!Highly recommended.

This book, "The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention", reinforces common sense attitudes toward the relationship between the quality of the diet and the resulting effect on health. This is the only book on the subject of health and diet that I have found that is simple enough for anyone to understand and yet sophisticated enough to cause most doctors and other health care providers to re-evaluate their practice of medicating the symptom and ignoring the root cause.Anyone doing research will love all of the credited sources and references, there is no "opinion" in this book, it is all proven with cited sources and studies. ... It has a lot of neat recipes in it!My husband is the "low-carber" in our family, and he has said that some of them need a little more flavor, usually salt.I've really enjoyed her unique recipes; out-of-the-ordinary seasonings like curry powder, I enjoy that. And some of them are just so darn easy, I love using it!Healthy yet convenient are my two favorite characteristics of recipe books.Thank you Dana!

4-0 out of 5 stars Exchanges are the foundation of weight and blood sugar managment.
There is nothing more basic for weight and blood sugar management than the food exchanges. They are called exchanges because the foods in each group can be exchanged with each other and still supply a similar amount of calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrients. "The Official Pocket Guide to Dieabetic Exchanges" is an excellent resource fordescribing the nature and benefits of the exchanges.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!
I got this book last year.It is simple and easy to read. I ordered the supplements immediately. In 3 months I had lowered my cholesterol 28 points so the Dr. did not make me try a prescription.Even with a foot injury and not exercising, the eating habits and taking the phytosterols this year, my cholesterol was down even more.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Secret" Ingredient
I went to my doctor in November 2005 and had my Cholesterol checked. It was a disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet
I will be forever grateful to the author for all the time she put into researching and writing this book. Because of my acidic problem, I have kidney stones. The medication did not help, and am now in Stage 4 kidney failure. With this alkaline diet, and low protein, I have been able to maintain my stage 4. If doctors would only make everyone more aware, we could follow the balanced diet and live healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an eye-opener!
The author describes the psyche of the food binger in such haunting and graphic terms that I feel that she is describing my own state of mind when I'm binging. She also describes the physical state of the body that causes the appetite to go out of control and whar to do about it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Was rather disappointed
Although I'm not a professional, I have read extensively in the area of health, nutrition, molecular biology, etc.If I am to believe the bulk of material written by researchers & scientists, doctors and naturopathic professionals, then I'd have to say that there is a fair amount of misinformation and not-quite-right "facts" presented in this book. After having read about a quarter of the book, I had come across so many items that don't quite agree with the latest generally accepted knowledge that I lost heart for finishing the book. While the overall presentation is basically valid and the lifestyle recommendations are good, I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who doesn't have the knowledge to sort out or at least question and verify which information is valid and what should be ignored. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars RECIPES THAT TASTE SO GOOD.
I have made so many of the wonderful recipes in this book, and they always turn out well. A great selection, especially the lemon poppy seed muffins. Delicious. A definite required book for all kitchens...vegan or otherwise!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pancake Recipe
The "Diner-Style Pancakes" recipe on page 201 is the single best reason to buy this cookbook. The pancakes turn out light, fluffy, and delicious every time.My child is allergic to eggs so we use this recipe for everyone, including any guests, because no one can tell that these pancakes are egg-free.
2-0 out of 5 stars Owners: If you want this book to represent your restaurant, please check the recipes -this is NOT the stuff you offer in NYC!
I totally agree with what some people have already said here:

5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplemant for any martial artist!
What a great book! As a student of a traditional martial art, I have access to in depth information concerning kata, application of kata, the history of my art, the spiritual concepts important to my art, etc. What I do not always have access to is information about how to train, excercises and stretches that I can use to supplemant my training, and nutritional information that will facilitate my training. While this book does place a certain emphasis on training for tournaments and competition, it is excellent overall, and should be helpful to any martial artist. It is easy to read, and the authors interject humour and personal anctedotes throughout the writing.
