5-0 out of 5 stars WELL-RESEARCHED AND VERY HELPFUL
An excellent source of information. This book, published in 2003, is exhaustively researched, she cites medical and research studies involving hundreds and thousands of subjects, she covers the newest technologies and medications. The only thing missing from her book (because it was published a few years ago) is the very latest information about the potential dangers of Fosamax and the class-action lawsuits about the death of bone in the jaw that has caused people to have their jaws removed. She provides excellent suggestions for improving bone health, including exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and other ways to beat osteoporosis. She doesn't say that osteoporosis is a myth, she just debunks some of the myths surrounding this condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars +Very informative
This book was very informative and helped me decide to stop taking Actonol.Very eye-opening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You Are "Borderline"
This book was well-researched and very readable. I was able quite easily to verify the author's conclusions against the underlying medical literature she cites. Much of it is on the internet. The book provides a needed "balance" concerning all of the hype about osteoporosis.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great cookbook for everyone!
I originally bought this book because my father had cancer and I am not the best cook. However, I use it all the time now for my entire family. They love the recipes and they are quick and easy to prepare.
2-0 out of 5 stars Be careful with this approach
If you subscribe to the view that cancer diets should focus on low fat, low sugar, and food that maintains low blood glucose levels this is a book to avoid. Receipes frequently used all purpose flour, refined sugar, powdered sugar, white potatoes, and margarine.People who have read and accept the principlesin "What To Eat If You Have Cancer" will find this cookbook difficult to use without careful receipe selection and ingredient substitution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and "A Must Have" Just what the Dr. Ordered
I recently purchased this book for my dad. The side effects of cancer are so grueling. This book is organized for quick access in the first few pages with all of the recipes categorized by symptom or side effects a person may be having. Also gives great menu ideas. It gives clear advice on what to do to use food as a FUEL for the FIRE to FIGHT the cancer. Very organized, sprial bound, easy to read and the recipes are great.I would recommend this book to ANYONE going through cancer. Also great for the caregiver to know too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins is amazing!
This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry.I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back).Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solutions Manuel
This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them.Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts I had while in college
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry.Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts.Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters.End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful).Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization.I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense
I finished reading this book today, but its effects have already taken effect: I lost 10 pounds in 2 months. But the most important thing about the book is the way concepts are assimilated and you can really FEEL the changes inside. I think this is just the beginning of a healthy way of eating for years to come. Losing weight will just be one consequence. I had read Fit for Life in the 80's and Allen Carr's book transmits a similar concept, in a different way. I strongly recommend this book even if you are not overweight, for you and your family, specially if you are a parent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but Not Scholarly.
This book is extremely helpful to those who are wishing to quit eating sugar. Almost immediately, the pages strengthen your resolve and heighten your motivation. That sugar is a factor in our general societal health decline, and that it adds to our collective physiological and psychological woes, is indisputable. Many of Duffy's aggregate claims are correct, but Sugar Blues is far more a polemic than that it is serious scholarship. Duffy writes to indict and persuade rather than to clarify "gray areas." That didn't bother me though as I was able to take it for what it was and appreciate it. For those looking for a more erudite discussion regarding the subject, they will have to look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars good ideas amid bad ideas
William Dufty is absolutely right when he writes that the human body is not built to digest sugar in the amounts contained in a can of coke or a serving of ice cream, and that when it is forced to do so, long-term damage, and health problems, must result.
2-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically lacking
Although it's been some years since this book was published, I decided to give it a read for personal as well as professional reasons. I have no love for the sugar industry and avoid all forms of refined sugar, so I came to this book with a very open mind.I'm also a diabetes educator, and I've worked with thousands of children with diabetes. The author's historical information was interesting and enlightening.I thought, hmm, good introduction to the topic. Then, he started on the diabetes angle, and as each page went by I started getting more and more disgusted with the book.

Editorial Review

Betty Crocker is on the health bandwagon. Not one for fads, Betty sensibly bases this 175-recipe cookbook on the Food Guide Pyramid guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and many other medical and nutrition professional organizations. You learn tips for cutting down on fat and cholesterol, understanding the different kinds of fat, and making smart food choices for heart health. The idea is to reduce fat by making ingredient substitutions and small alterations, but not making drastic changes. The recipes are varied and creative and don't resemble "diet food": Ginger Shrimp Kabobs, Vegetable Potstickers, Stuffed Veal Chops with Cider Sauce, Vegetable and Ham Jambalaya, Curried Chicken and Nectarines, Caribbean Fish Salad, and Thai Shrimp and Rice Noodle Nests. The desserts include Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping (only 20 percent fat!), Blueberry-Lime Torte (about 15 percent fat), and Double Chocolate-Date Cake (about 25 percent fat). Recipes are labeled with symbols indicating "low-calorie," "low-fat," "moderate-fat," "low-cholesterol," and "moderate-cholesterol," so you can choose how far you want to go. Each recipe has a hefty amount of nutritional information: calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and diet exchanges. Cooks who love knowing what the dishes should look like will enjoy the 45 mouth-watering color photos. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm sick of people who do not listen
Over and over I read that people don't agree with this or that method, however God WROTE in the bible what we can eat and what we cannot eat. Pure and Simple. God doesn't want to hurt us. He wants us to eat right so we can live a fulfilling life. I agree with most things that the author says...except the supplement part. I think that is pushed a little bit too much. However, it is a good book and explains clearly what we should eat and why.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Maker's Diet
The Maker's Diet is the most balanced book I've ever read concerning the topic of health and wellness. Over the past 15 years I've read so many books that give guidelines on how to stay healthy, or become healthy. The books have ranged from focusing on the physical, emotional or spiritual, but very few have incorporated all three parts. The Maker's Diet presents a holist approach and therefore gives insight into how to make it a part of your entire life, it doesn't just address eating. Most books present a plan that is extremely difficult to maintain for any period of time because they are so far from how most of us are accustomed to living and eating. I believe that The Maker's Diet gives a wonderful common sense approach to living. What I especially like about The Maker's Diet is that it is founded on the Bible. I believe that it is no accident that what God told the Israelites what to eat and what not to eat, so many thousands of years ago, still applies to all of us today, regardless of your spirituality. I encourage everyone to not only read this book, but to incorporate the principles into your life. It is a must read for those searching for health, as well as a balanced lifestyle.
5-0 out of 5 stars I found this to be a very effective an balanced book/diet
First off, I have suffered with GERD (reflux disease) since I got a stomach ulcer 10 years ago. And I have been using Losec/Nexium steady for years. If I forgot to take it, I got terrible heartburns and such ... I just started the Makers Diet almost two weeks ago, and I stopped using Nexium after the first day, and after the first week I haven't even taken any antacids, like Tums or Garden of Life's Acid Defense. It's a miracle!

2-0 out of 5 stars not for me
I was hoping for something with easy recipes that the whole family could enjoy together, but this is not it. A lot of the recipes are really unsuited for babies, and they instead give "baby" versions at the end that consist of reserving one of the ingredients (e.g., brown rice) and pureeing it plain--not exactly nutritious. (These are often followed by "children's" versions that necessitate picking out selected ingredients that may--or may not--appeal to kids.) There are too many grain-based recipes for my taste (deep-fried millet croquettes...red bean quinoa chili) and a lot of nuts (bad for babies), sea vegetables and permutations of soy (tofu, tempeh, tamari) which I personally am not interested in serving due to all the recent scrutiny of soy products as hormone disruptors (also a possible allergen for babies). It is really sort of an Asian-inspired/macrobiotic vegetarian cookbook (Tempeh Bacon is one of the recipes). "Whole Foods," in my mind, should feature fresh, minimally processed, natural, localized ingredients, but this seems to require endless trips to the health food store to purchase products such as seitan and kudzu. There is a lot of great nutritional information at the beginning of the book discussing babies and breastfeeding mothers, and some seemingly good sugar-free desserts, but I am sort of disappointed that the majority of the recipes are not palatable for the whole family (or easily modifed so that older babies can enjoy what everyone else gets).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive
"Feeding the Whole Family" by Cynthia Lair really is for the WHOLE family - and that includes infants and young children. Lair, a certified Health and Nutrition Counselor, devotes a whole chapter on starting your baby on solid foods. From there, she gives practical tips and advice on how to attract your children to healthy food. Lair also discusses the importance of whole, organic foods and well-balanced meals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy for Your Lactobacilli
In the foreword by Annemarie Colbin, CHES, of The Natural Gourmet Cookery School in NYC, there is the suggestion that shifts in customs around eating have contributed to the breakdown of our society, "could it be that by our dietary customs- consumption of unnatural foods and large amounts of meat and milk from animals raised on antibiotics and hormones-we are building a new kind of human being, one that has little connection with the healthier ways of the past?"I'd have to say... No.I don't see that as being a simple cause and effect, but I'm with her in spirit.I'd see both our diets and our lifestyles as being downstream effects of animals living in a very different kind of environment than the one we spent the overwhelming majority of our species-span evolving in.It doesn't matter whether she overstates the case or not, the bottom-line is still correct, we are Paleolithic hominids with Paleolithic-tuned bodies stranded without our tribes, alone in our urban institutions.By finding ways to recreate customs that resonate with a deeper part of our evolutionary past, we stand to not only enrich our lives but also improve our physical and mental health.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
I really liked the What to Eat when You're Expecting (an older edition of this book). This new edition has more recipes than the old book (and few, if any, repeats). I prefer the format of the old book for the nitty-gritty nutrition info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic nutrition guide w/ GREAT recipes!
I took this book out of the library, but decided to buy it because I wanted to own the recipes. There is a great variety of recipes for all meals of the day and snacks. Most of the recipes are lower fat and sugar and higher fiber and protein versions of your favs. They don't elimate the bad things, but they do limit it and work in more whole grains and veggies then I normally do in my cooking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended, with reservations
After tossing the predecessor to this book in the garbage, I was a bit hesitant to fork over the cash for this new edition.I'm a bit ambivalent about my investment. It is a kindler, gentler version, though not as friendly as the Dr. William Sears series of books, which I highly reccommend for all things baby and family.(I wish they had a book on pregnancy nutrition . . . sigh)

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. Read more

Reviews (41)

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on everyone's reading list
This book has changed the way I think about fats. It has taught me to bring my intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids into balance and to recognize the importance of the latter in my diet. Although the book contains rock-solid scientific documentation, it is easy to understand, and the plan it advocates is simple, nutritionally sound, and offers many appealing food options. For the past several months I have been following the guidelines in 'The Omega Diet,' choosing recipes from my large collection of cookbooks, particularly Sonia Uvezian's 'Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen,' which is one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. Uvezian provides health-conscious readers with a wealth of recipes for incredibly delicious, nutritious, and satisfying dishes that are quite compatible with the principles outlined by Dr. Simopoulos. The results have been impressive. I feel great and have even lost some weight without trying! It is a pleasure to be true to this diet, which is one you can enjoy all your life with a clear conscience.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best diet book !!!
This book is a classic, and will be for a long time !!!The best way to eat healthy, and stay strong. Many of her predictions have already come true - i.e omega -3 eggs, canola oil in many foods. Has worked to maintain my weight for several years, and great cholesterol levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will help you formulate a healthy approach to eating
"The Omega Diet" makes it clear just what exactly constitutes a truly healthful diet. In easily understandable language Dr. Simopoulos outlines a simple, medically sound plan based on seven guidelines that can restore your body's nutritional balance and help it to function as nature intended. Her book emphasizes the importance of eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants and warns against consuming excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates, which can contribute to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and a host of other maladies that afflict many millions of Americans. You really owe it to yourself to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
i love this book. it has a lot of good info for raw foodists. it is a definitely a must read if you want to follow this diet seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work...
After many months, almost a year of trying to get a hold of this book, I finally got my hands on this precious gem. The Sunfood Diet is everything I expected and much more. David Wolfe does an excellent job of explaining the art of consuming only raw food for optimal health and nutrition. This is not a book you will read once and put on a shelf to collect dust. You will read and reread it over and over again. This is not just a book about the raw food diet; it is a book about life and how to live it more abundantly with vibrant health. From the very first chapter to the very last puntuation mark, Mr.Wolfe captures and holds your attention. His prose is clear and easy to understand. Beautiful quotes and poetry adorn the pages throughout the book. An added bonus were the beautiful kirlian photographs showing the life energy emanating from live fruits and vegetables. I am convinced now more than ever that the raw food diet is for me. I wish all Americans would come to this truth. The sooner we realize that the Standard American Diet is killing us the better off we will be. Kudos to you Mr. Wolfe and thankyou for opening my eyes, and for writing an excellent book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice
This book has some very helpful information about the balance one must maintain between omega 3 and omega 6 oils. I have been living with ulcerative colitis for 10 years now. It has helped me a great deal after only one month. I urge anyone with IBD to read this book on this balance or get the info. somewhere else. You will likely benefit from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Eating Right for a Bad Gut : The Complete Nutritional Guide to Ileitis, Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Inflammatory Bowel
This book has been very helpful. After being diganosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and having a bad time with it, getting off steroids has been difficult. I found the information here to make the most sense of any thing I've read.I've been following the advise with some modifications.(Having some lean, organic beef now and then seems to be fine... for me...eveyone is different.)I've really noticed a difference in how I feel. The idea of treating IBD by reducing inflammation is right on track. But, the book is very redundant, and can be a bit confusing at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars This isn'tjust a book it's a WLS BIBLE!
I would give this book 10 starts if I could. This book is fabulous and when I have my wls it's going with me to the hospital. The one thing I loved about Barbara is that she dosen't drag on about what it was like growing up or how she lived like the rich and famous. Mrs Thompson get's down to the nitty gritty. She tells you what happened at her Dr visit what he said down to when she had er surgery. She tells you about her complications and how this was the BEST decision she ever made.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good For Life

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!
In a fast-paced society that thrives on junk food, any man and woman should know the extensive role hormones play in their bodies. Hormones regulate all the important activities in our bodies and Dr. Schwarzbein explains what disastrous effect an overly-busy lifestyle and bad eating habits have on your body, effect that will eventually translate into disease and maybe even early death. I really think everyone should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars if reading one, read this one
I've read all her books - really wanted the info but it was overwhelming for me and the nutrition/hormone testing part was complex.Great info - read the Transition II book if reading only one of her books!I'm feeling better than in a long time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a great plan for optimal health!
Schwarzbein Principle-The Program is the first book of the three that I picked up and I later found that it is a summation of both books one and two.I believe that, although this is her third book, it was for the best that I read this one first since I was then able to decide whether the approach as a whole suited me.I decided that I very much want to change my lifestyle including my eating habits, exercise, stress and hormone levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
It's clearly important to know what kind of food we eat. If you keep eating fast food, the author explains you will gain weight easily and it will be dangerous for your health.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pretty informative, balanced book
I got this book to be fair - I knew Peter Singer had a reputation as being on the fringe philosophy-wise, but not much more than that. I was intrigued by the title and had already read Fast Food Nation. So I read the book because I felt it was important to do so even if I disagreed with the writer
