4-0 out of 5 stars Good Diet Book
Compared to most other diet books, this book is great. It's a healthy, balanced approach to losing weight. But I didn't find any new information in this book.I thought I would learn something from the authors, but was surprised to find that wasn't the case. It's really a conventional approach to eating and exercising.(I liked Mollie Katzen better when she was "changing the world".)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Research-Based Diet and Eating Plan That Really Works!
As a public health researcher, I am always interested in what Dr. Walter Willett has to say about diet and healthy eating. His recommendations are based on research, not on fad or fashion. Now, teamed with Mollie Katzen of "Moosewood" fame, Willett has created a workable plan for helping Americans not only lose weight, but eat a healthier diet.My husband and I have tried out the 21-day plan for the last 3 weeks, and we are losing weight and we are not starving in the least! The recipes are excellent, most of them taking only a short time to prepare. One has to be committed to stick with this eating plan, but the results are very worthwhile. Congratulations to Willett and to Katzen for a job well done!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very well organized book
Bought it out of curiosity and didn't like as a book. If you were to follow their sugestions, you would need to make a lot of notes trying to make sense out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars You only need to read a fourth of the book
One great advantage of a book like this is that you only need to read the fourth with your blood type. That way you will not be jealous of the other three fourths.

3-0 out of 5 stars A GUIDE
This is a great guide if you can stick to it. It contains over 200 pages of restaurants across the map. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Applebee's Grill and Bar and Pizza Hut just to name a few. You just have to make sure you remember what phase you are on before selecting your menu choices and this guide will let you know what food you can have in your phase. This is a good reference guide when you go out to eat. I started by taking the book with me then I just started writing down things that I might enjoy from the restaurant that I was going to. I think for long-term weight loss, you have to be mentally prepared to commit to a change of life. You should also research as many diet plans as you can, this way you can find out what works for YOU, and not what works for majority of people. You have to see yourself as a unique individual and remember; what works for someone else may not work for you. I gave this book 3 stars because unless you are clear of how the South Beach Diet works you may get frustrated with this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars South Beach Diet is Now Even Easier!
My husband and I gave South Beach a try, but we gave it up about a year ago.The recipes were just so time consuming and the ingredients seemed pricey. We did experience some wonderful results, though.Well, now that more microwave meals are available and meal replacement bars, as well as a 30-minute meals cookbook and this guide, we've decided to give it another try.
4-0 out of 5 stars Handy book
I love the South Beach diet since it is so similar to "normal" food that I grew up on but the restaurants are not. This guide shows you before you have to pick it from the menu what is available and what might be the best choices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
The book gives details on every food group for your blood type. You can look at all four blood types at a glance in the charts given.I just wish there was more information about how to tell if you were a non-secretor or a secretor.Otherwise, good book to have in your library. The husband and I have changed our eating to be according to our blood type as suggested, and within two weeks we could both feel a difference.More energy, less bloating or indigestion. It's a good book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Physical Results May Vary!
I was considering adopting a vegitarian diet due to my many health problems and my mother told me about this book and the benefits her friends have had. So I bought the book and the information was quite facinating. It was like reading my physical autobiography, so I started the diet and I've been on it for 4 weeks and I have had no weight loss. Why..I don't know, but my energy levels have dropped significantly although I must say that my overall shape has changed. It appears that either I'm toning or I'm loosing muscle mass. The books were an easy read, but the thing I find most confusing is this concept of using herbs for ailments and overal health, there are sooooo many herbs out there for every kind of physical issue good or bad and I'm confused as to just how many pills can one person take?! I want to buy the right kind of vitamins and minerals for my body, but even on the website there are 5 or more kinds of pills that I should take, not to mention the shakes, bars and extra health meds that they recommend. I'm sorry to say that I have learned why I am sensitive to certain foods and why I've gained weight, but as to how to fix the problem, there seem to be too many pills and sometimes conflicting pieces of advice. In all, I'm more confused than I was when I was in the dark. So to all of you who have been successful with this diet, BRAVO to you, but for those of you who have bodies that are far more complex than diets and "all natural" foods, I feel you and maybe we'll find the REAL solution someday together.

3-0 out of 5 stars it was okay
I bought the book thinking that it would help me learn how to eat for my blood type but I find it very difficult to follow and difficult to read it. This is more like an index for health problems and if you are susseptible to them by what your blood type is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YES LETS DO LUNCH!!!!!!
REPEAT AFTER ME.......I WILL NEVER DIET AGAIN!!!!! I have been on every diet known to man and nothing ever stuck.Id lose for a short time and gain it right back.In six weeks both my husband and I have lost 13lbs and have never been hungry!!!!This is NOT a FRUIT DIET as some have claimed. My husband doesnt even LIKE FRUIT but he enjoys the smoothies every morning in fact he makes them himself!!!!You have to READ THIS BOOK not just glaze over it and expect to understand it.IN fact the author even recommends you read it 3 times in order for it to become second nature.Once you've tried this way of eating, even if you stray off the path once in a while (say Thanksgiving Dinner) you wont be able to wait to get back to eating from the acceptable choices again.I feel my health improving daily as the pounds continue to slip off my body without any exercise as well.I will exercise one day soon, one day when I dont have this additional 50lbs to drag around the track!!! Do yourself a FAVOR and give this a try, I promise you wont be dissapointed!! GOD BLESS

5-0 out of 5 stars EAT HEALTHY CARBS UNTIL FULL, AS WELL AS ALL THE LEAN RED MEAT AND ALL THE SWEETEST FRESH FRUITS AND FRUIT SMOOTHIES YOU WANT!
Diets fail for one of two reasons...you end up being hungry all the time, or you end up craving something. With Let's Do Lunch, you are never hungry because you eat until you are full whenever you ARE hungry, and Let's Do Lunch eliminates all of your cravings. For example, Let's Do Lunch is full of healthy carbohydrates that you can eat until full and lose weight, and you don't have to count carbs, calories, fat grams, points or anything else.

Editorial Review

The message of this book could be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. There is no hard science, no clearly-defined plan, and no lists of food to have or have not; instead, you'll find simple tricks that boil down to eating carefully prepared seasonal food, exercising more and refusing to think of food as something that inspires guilt. It's both a practical message and far easier said than done in today's "no pain, no gain" culture. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, wonderful writing and inspiring life-style advice
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am foreign and when I moved to the U.S. I was shocked by the prevailing attitude toward food and by the thousands of diets and low-fat/low-calorie products that you see everywhere. Nevetheless, it is difficult to live here and not fall into the trap of viewing food as an enemy rather than as nourishment and a sensual pleasure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Hedonistic Eating
A great guide book for eating while staying healthy and still losing weight.
4-0 out of 5 stars finally, a diet and lifestyle book with delicious recipes
As mentioned in the other reviews, this is a lifestyle book -- with some common nutrition sense and recipes.Following the portion control advice only, a reader would certainly have a healthier lifestyle, but in my opinion I think this book is best implemented as an overall lifestyle plan for a better quality or life and a better relationship with food (and one's wardrobe possibly).WHICH MEANS READ THE WHOLE BOOK FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!A year ago this book would not have worked for me -- I lived in a rural area.Walking everywhere was not an option.Since then I moved to the downtown area of a city. It's been easy to integrate all of Guiliano's "tricks" and tools into my daily schedule (this is a superb plan for those who live or work in a city, which is why I'm giving this review four stars instead of five).Plus, as I mentioned in the title of this reveiw, the recipes are delicious.I've read a lot of diet books and many have punishing recipes straight out of a Siberian gulag. So I'm not at my goal weight yet, but I'm getting there. This book has made a huge difference: I'M NO LONGER HUNGRY AND MISERABLE.Best of all, there's a Godiva boutique down the street and as part of my "French Women Don't Get Fat" lifestyle, I make sure I stop by a couple times a month to indulge in my favorite chocolate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for at all.
I admit it, the 12 steps to Raw foods should have given away that this book is just a rehash of 12 steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!
I liked this book.It was very sincere, clear and helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage to create change through personal choice
Victoria Boutenko is a revolutionary. Like those who have come before her and those who will follow, it is not an easy path, nor will everyone see the truth in what she espouses. However, it is essential to to read this book (and her others if you wish to have a comprehensive view) to begin to understand how our food choices affect not only our health, but our surroundings as well. I was in a natural food store this morning in Eugene, Oregon and was delighted to see this title as well as many of her others above the shelf in the living food section of the store. 12 Steps is an important piece of the literature that is finally becoming available to the masses, shedding light on how to be healthy, prevent illness, and be a part of the sustainable movement that is necessary if we are to continue to inhabit this earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatweight loss book
My mother read the book and lost 10 lbs.Great book, but you have to follow the book plan for life. If you stray away from the book, the weight will probably come back on.

5-0 out of 5 stars strict program -good results
The book is well designed and very clear about how to progress through the program. The first time I tried it I lost about 50#.I have a hard time maintaining the low carb lifestyle...so I guess the title is misleading for me...but when I start to put on the weight,I know I can pull out the book and drop it quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works if you follow directions
I lost 35 lbs on this diet and have kept it off for 3 years. The most important point is to follow the time limit - 4 weeks on the strict diet and 2 weeks on the metabolism speed up part.I was able to eat a lot of food without gaining weight after finishing the metabolic raising diet.It gave me more awareness to reach for something like yogurt, edamame, an egg, jerkey, protein bar, instead of pretzels and other low fat carb snacks.I've always have eaten a lot of veggies so I ate even more than the portion control recommended.I had trouble losing weight by cutting back because I always exercise and don't a lot of calories anyway.Making myself eat more often and eating more balanced meals gave me a lifetime way of eating.I would recommend that people try to eat more vegetarian protein.I can't eat large portions of meat and at first had stomach aches.I ate more veggie burgers, edamame, wheat gluten products, etc. and did much better. Like any diet you have to go through a difficult period of cutting out empty calories and reducing your portions.I'm now a size 4 and have a plan to keep the weight off for life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, BUT all that glitters....
I first read this book 7 years ago and still refer to it from time to time.It has brilliant no-nonsense and practical advice for anybody who wants to transform their body the only way possible (that is, diet, weights and cardio). However, I have taken away one star for two reasons: Firstly, there is this constant advice for you to take the authors EAS supplements as part of the successful 12 week program which is annoying if you are an international reader who does not have access to the stuff.Perhaps if he had suggested generic equivalents to his products for those who can't access or afford his expensive stuff then it wouldnt be an issue.Secondly, as the wife of a bodybuilder and as a person who has been weight-training for seven years, I know for SURE that some (not all) of those bodies used in the success stories were transformed partly through the use of steroids.Sure they trained and dieted to get to such low body fat and muscle-gain, but those of us who live in the gym and are experienced past the beginner stage, know what it takes for someone to change from "fat beer gullet" to "six-pack hunk" in twelve weeks.I still recommend the book though, I just didnt want someone struggling with their weight (as I once did) to think it is completely possible to get so much muscle in such a short space of time without drugs. But having said that, I have watched many people in the gym follow this program and lose a lot of fat in twelve weeks.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR PROGRAM SUCCESS
My husband is currently doing the Body for Life program for the 2nd time. The first time he started before Christmas and lost 35 pounds of fat.We bought the second journal to help him gain more muscle because the discipline of journal helped him reach his first goal.Easy to use, and the testimonials are inspirational. You can do it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like having Bill Phillips next to you as you get healthier!
If you've read the book Body-for-LIFE and are ready to complete a 12-week Challenge, the Success Journal will be your best tool. With it, you'll have the peace of mind that you are following Bill's exact recipe for increasing your physical and mental strength. The template for every workout, every meal and every mindset exercise is carefully and simply laid out.For each of the 84 days, there is a relevant message from Bill and an inspirational story from ordinary people who completely transformed in 12 weeks.I used it for my first Challenge and I am convinced that it helped me transform the way I did. It's been 2 years now and every 12 weeks, I set new goals; I've used the Journal for 6 of my 10 Challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars was a Zoner before
I have learned alot from reading this book. I was doing the Zone before and was getting good results, but was tempted to do a straight protein diet to loss weight faster. After reading the schwarzbein Principle, it reaffirmed the idea that I had read in Dr. Sears book the devastating effects of a very, very low or almost zero carbohydrate diet. The illustrations in the book easily described the actions your body takes in response to eating certain foods. also, I never considered sarotonin levels. I am on the diet now and I am believing that I will continue to loss weight by taking in a little lower carbohydrates than Dr. Sears suggests, but still not too low to start ketosis; I am trying to gain muscle not lose it! I also have the Schwarzbein cookbook which I am enjoying greatly! Thank you so much for writing this book, and I would suggest it to all who are desiring a 'true' education in nutrition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coming Off Of A Decade Of Low Carbing
I have been a low-carber through the Somersizing program for a very long time.My husband was the one really---who wanted to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets. We were quite concerned about gaining weight back at accelerated speeds.(Anyone who has done Atkins knows what I mean by that). We gave the Schwarzbein Principle--The Program one week to see how we felt.We added back whole grains in moderation, potatoes, yams, brown rice and other starches. We also added back more fruits, remembering to eat them in combination with proteins and fats.We both got on the scale this morning. My husband has lost 5 lbs and I have lost 3 lbs. in just one week. This is an extremely balanced approach that we are enjoying immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Works!
I've been trying to loose some weight and get healthier for so long. This book was suggested to me by my Dr. I tried it and it really works.I have lost 17 pounds in 2 months, and it wasn't even that tough. It all has to do with watching the type of carbs that you eat and keeping a balance with protein.

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Feel Better, Look Better, Live Better
I learned some great new things about nutrition, food combining, digestion & more. After 8 weeks on the program(eating raw at Breakfast & Lunch & a healthy dinner including cooked fish or meat) I feel so much better, my digestion/intestinal sluggishness is GONE and I lost 2 sizes.
5-0 out of 5 stars There is a unprocess to everything
I found this book to very informative. In a nutshell, it tells you how food is processed throughout your system and it's reaction. Like, fresh vegatables can be eaten with anything but starches don't digest well with meat. There are stages to going *Raw* that Ms. Rose has honestly and clearly put out there. Our bodies just can't go Raw over night. Yhere is a change in the digestive system. I know from my experience how my body feels when I eat raw for several days and then introduce the wrong combonation of foods. I feel like I'm suffering at the toilet.Sorry. Natalie gets you through the stages of developing this life style. It's a Detox program not a cookbook. It has recipes for all the stages to going *Raw. Ms. Rose hershelf claims it took several years for her to go completely Raw. The recipes are for those various stages. I don't find anything wrong with this book. As far as enzymes. All foods have them, and yes our body has them too. When cooking foods you are breaking down the enzymes that are packed with nutrients. That simple. We want to incorporate more enzymes or natural living food into our bodies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great WW Recipes
If you're a fan of WW, you should love this book.It was written before any of the POINTS systems, so you have to do some calculations on your own.The nutrition info is provided for each recipe. This book is an especially good value because as another reviewer noted, for each main recipe, you get additional recipes provide a day's worth of meals.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not the book for my family
Way too many of the recipes in this book have ingredients I have never heard of!Also, the ingredient lists are often very long.I am donating my copy to the public library and will use "The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers" and "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents" to help me provide sensible meals for my family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but...
I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.Read more

Editorial Review

"It is not only what you eat that makes the difference, but also of extreme importance is when you eat it and in what combinations," say Harvey and Marilyn Diamond, authors of this classic bestseller. Their program results in eating balanced, nutritious, high-fiber foods, making dieting "unnecessary and as obsolete as sealing wax."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I began Fit For Life in March of 2006 and all I can say is wow. The author's time tested methods of food combining give the reader a whole new way of living. This is not a casual diet plan, it truly is a new way of living each day, in a healthy and balanced way. Any person who seriously wants to permanently detoxify the body should consider this plan. When food is combined in the proper way, the body ceases to struggle with itself. I no longer feel tired through out the day, and I find I need less sleep alltogether. A good friend of mine has been doing Fit For Life for over 20 years and I am thankfull he introduced me to it. I don't think i could ever go back to eating improperly. Try this way of eating for one month, you won't go back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have had this book for years
First of all, there are so many references to facts and tests that you won't mentally argue with the authors, and/or you will just give what they say a try.Well, I gave up milk and voila, I was much healthier.. go figure. Many other health gurus tell you that dairy is bad, but these authors go to the effort of telling you WHY it is bad and the history of how it got such false reviews in the first place. But milk is not the only subject that may open your eyes. And remember, it's a book and you can pick and choose what you will do in your life regardless of what anyone thinks or says, BUT.. it never hurts to try something to see if it is true, and this book won't let you down so why not give it a try?(BTW.. I still eat meat, but I can't argue with the logic in the book.. I still have freedom of will :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars What they dont tell you at school
I found this book life changing; it is a practical view on the basic function of eating. I did not use the diet plan that is provided but just the basic idea, I will use for the rest of my life, and it has helped me start to locate ways to improve my health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook, Diet or Regular
This is my family's favorite cookbook. The recipes are fun and I haven't hit a dud yet. When I cook from it my family doesn't know I am cooking "light", they just think it is delicious. I have shared more recipies from this cookbook than any other I own.I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone, not just those who are on the Weight Watcher's plan.We are eating yet another recipe from this tonight.I can hardly wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, but important
I agree that the book can be repetitive at times, but it gives a lot of important and clear information on the history and benefits of the Mediterranean diet that should not be missed. I think that if this is the lifestyle that you wish to persue(and I think most should), then this book needs to be one of the books on your shelf along with The Omega Diet and The Fat Fallacy. If you would like to find recipes that support this lifestyle, Italian Cooking For Dummies has detailed explanation of ingredients as well as recipes and Lidia's Family Table has some wonderful recipes in it. Most ethnic cookbooks of the region will work, keeping in mind that portion control and quality ingredients are the cornerstone of this diet as well as the ratio of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I should add that many of the recipes in vegetarian cookbooks as well as whole food cookbooks will also fall under a Mediterranean lifestyle. Quality not quantity will buy us the health we want.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, clear approach to eating well and staying healthy
Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet is one of the safest and healthiest in the world. People who follow it have significantly lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. This book offers dietary wisdom and practical advice in language that is easy to understand. In addition to providing nutritional information, an eating plan, and an exercise plan, it emphasizes the importance of strong social ties and of dealing with stress efficiently.
3-0 out of 5 stars The only reason I am giving this three stars instead of two
is because it is obvious the authors put a lot of time into this and really believe in what they are saying. However, I found this book to be repetitive in places, so much so, I had to skim over certain pages.
