4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, but not an everyday "users guide" to fats & oils
Enig's discussion is thorough, and a necessary correction to the nutrition science and food industy's deceptions concerning fats and cholesterol, all in the service of marketing transfat-laden food. However, the book is not that "user-friendly" for the non-scienfically-inclined, who are concerned about eating and health.
5-0 out of 5 stars Know Your Fats, EAT Your Fats
This is a great source of information on fats and oils, and even though I also have "Nourishing Traditions" and "Eat Fat, Lose Fat," I still felt that I learned something new. My health certainly has improved since I've incorporated more saturated fat in my diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most *essential* book on the nature of fats by a true scientist
Ignore the anonymous "reader"'s review titled "Disappointing." Anonymous reviews immediately create a suspect impression. For all anyone might know, the "reader" could be a well-known other "author" of a popular book on fats. The "reader" in his review does not come up with a cohesive enough overview on why Dr. Enig's book is "disappointing." He complains of issues that has nothing to do with Dr. Enig's research as a scientist, how the chemical structures and patterns of fatty acids *and* most importantly, how they work in the human body. He does not prove in any way of how Dr. Enig's knowledge of lipid chemistry fails. His assertion that the fatty acids in animal fat has changed from 100 years ago is a no-brainer and a plainly dumb arguing point: of course the quality of the fatty acids have changed, because most of the way animals are raised today is so different from how they were 100 years ago: conditions, feeding, and treatment. The only way one may compare a cow from 100 years ago is to raise them on pastures, in organic methods. It is a self-evident factor that we should only be eating animals raised naturally, out of warehouses, without synthetic injections.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real life-changer!
I've tried them all, every diet that is. Not only have I tried a lot of diets to lose weight, I've also worked with other books on eating to control inflammation. This is a great approach. I feel and look the best I've felt in years. The proof has been in testing the foods in my own body. I feel MUCH better and I'm finally losing weight after 2 years of chronic fatique and puzzling weight-gain in spite of eating a healthy diet and taking a lot of the right supplements. You can use the tables to change your current eating and food purchasing habits if following the diet plan isn't for you. That's what I did and it worked like a charm. I own a fitness club and am very familiar with everything out there. This is a gem. Buy it and use it. Eliminate the more inflammatory foods you currently eat and spike your diet with powerful anti-inflammatory foods and see what happens!

4-0 out of 5 stars Take it on faith, it might help.
I purchased this book because I knew that inflammation theory has a lot of credibility with Andrew Weil and some others in the medical community at present.A limitation of the book is that the reader is not told in any detail how the inflammation index that is so central to the plan is derived.Taking it on faith, I tried it and it did reveal some things: for example, a personal preference for fruit and whole-grains over vegetables that almost certainly was not an entirely good thing. It does give you a way to quantify those kinds of things, and it would be hard to imagine how it could be misused unless someone tried to slather huge quantities of anti-inflammatory curry and ginger on top of an unhealthy diet. All in all, a provocative book that doesn't contradict common-sense good principles of diet and will likely improve your diet and make you healthier if you take the trouble to do the math. Also, the recipes are good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good dietary recommendations, but not quite the whole picture
This book offers up sound dietary advice.Foods are rated according to a formula that predicts how inflammatory they are to your body. The formula is not specified, although the factors that are considered are listed.I would have liked more information as to how much weight was given to the various nutrients and why. Information not contained in the USDA food database wasn't included in the formula. Therefore, a number of factors, such micronutrients, pesticide residues, etc. are not addressed. The inflammatory effects of eating charbroiled foods or deep fried foods are not discussed. This is an interesting attempt at quantifying the anti-inflammatory and inflammatory qualities of most common foods, and for the most part is quite helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cleansing diet eliminates food addictions.
The Rice Diet Solution makes this excellent program completely accessible and it is working remarkably well for me. I've been sitting on 60 extra pounds for abut 10 years. Fad dieting brought instant but temporary results once I returned to eating 'normal' foods made addictive by sodium, fats and sugar. Once I accomplishedthe initial cleansing phase of low sodium and no sugar and, most importantly, no processed foods, my addictions vanished and the weight continues to peel off. I lost half of my goal in two months. I now prefer salad to pizza and won't touch meat. I eat three high nutrition, high fiber, fresh meals day, which prohibits hunger and keeps the calories low. The exercise part is easy! I just gave up my car and walk and take public transit. I'm saving money and stopped my daily contributions of packaging and plastic to the landfill. The book is a guideline to a new way of life that continues to nurture my spirit and redefine my presence and participation in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and it works!
In the first few pages you are told everything you need to know to understand the diet part of this plan. Without even finishing the book, I jumped right in and started and immediately started losing weight! It is so simple, easy and FILLING. If you love fresh vegetables and fruit and can curb your sodium intake, you too should see immedialte results. The rest of the book gives you the nutritional explaination of the healthfulness of the plan (as a health care professional this is something important to me) and advice on lifestyle changes such as taking time for yourself. Easy to read and understand and follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener
The Rice Diet Solution includes hundreds of tasty, filling, easy-to-prepare recipes -- some from the Rice House kitchen, others inspired by major chefs and adapted to Rice Diet standards. The Rice Diet is not just an eating plan. It's a physical, emotional, and spiritual program that will change the way you live, giving you new vitality, energy, and longevity. Ricers report that the Rice Diet not only helps them solve weight problems they've struggled with their whole lives but also teaches them a whole new way of healthier, more mindful living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most interesting food writer since Jean Carper
Almost two decades ago, Jean Carper revolutionized my thinking about food with her well researched book, "The Food Pharmacy," a fascinating treatise on the health-promoting properties of foods.Since then there have been innumerable self-appointed food gurus, most of whom struck me as primarily self-promotional and thin on scientific backing. While I do continue to consider Nina Planck's iconoclastic food theories with the proverbial grain of salt, I think she has done an enormous service for the health-conscious reader by approaching the entire topic of foods, and particularly the controversial issue of dietary fats, with a fresh and relatively unbiased eye.She has assembled an impressive body of research to support her assertions regarding grass-fed meat and dairy products, and touches on many other important topics, such as the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids to the developing fetus.New to me was the research regarding the importance of lauric acid, a key component of coconut oil, as a health-promoting fatty acid.I remain skeptical about a few of her assertions, and I also partially disagree with her largely anecdotal criticism of the vegetarian diet. However, she has opened my mind to some very new approaches to food and nutrition.Additionally, she has brought the sensual pleasure of food back into focus as an integral component of healthy eating. After reading this book, you will believe more than ever the old adage that "You are what you eat" -- you'll just regard what you eat in an entirely new light!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew!
I was looking to learn more about healthy eating and I ran across this book at the library.I was fairly sceptical at first but as I kept reading everything she was saying it all was starting to fit together and make sense. She quotes study after study in her book which helps give foundation to her ideas. The thing that really got me about this book is that it is common sense to eat food in thier more natural "unprocessed" state. We are so used to processed food in this age Nina Planck tells us how to know what traditional foods are and what industrial foods are.If you would like to get information about what you are eating and how it might be affecting you, and how to eat to maximize all nutrients available in your food this book is perfect for you. Also, it is delicious and revitalizing to eat this way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought
I checked this book out of the local library, and after extending the loan twice purchased my own copy on Amazon. It is thought provoking and a little disturbing when you consider how very different today's diet is from fifty years ago. After reading Real Food I talked with my sixty-something year old mother about how her family ate during her childhood. It seems that in gaining convenience and product consistency we have lost character and nutritional value in many foods.I have made some changes in the way I am feeding my family and I do find very real differences in the products I buy at the local rural (farmers')market.Nina Planck is a thoughtful guide toward a different way of eating.A nicely written and informative book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Low GI Diet Cookbook:100 Simple,
I did not like most of the recepies that were in the book. They were too exotic for me.A couple of the desert recepies were ok and I did like the color pages that showed the food.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many odd spices and ingredients
The recipes in this book look really good.It is a beautiful book. However, too many require unusual spices and ingredients for the ordinary cook. On the other hand, some of the recipes do use everyday ingredients.

1-0 out of 5 stars Need to be a NY Nutrionist
I bought this book in an effort to help myself w/fibromyalgia pain. I actually bought "WInning the War" which is the newest book, which Prevention Mag. sent a free copy to review before buying. After coming on line here, one reveiw indicated it was nearly the same as Inflammation Nation. I went to local bookstore, found inflammation Nation there for far less than the $40 Prevention/Rodale books wanted for his Winning the War book. These are just about as identical as 2 books can get. I find the book contains much information and is well written. However, like many who wrote, it's almost not a book to be readl but rather studied. I find I have had to take notes of this and that, and these AA's and so much more that the general public most likely wouldn't understand. I was disappointed that there is not a list of substitute type foods, esp. in my case, where I don't eat fish at all.Overall, a good book for reference on which foods carry more inflammation, but I think I need to focus on seeing a nutrionist more, who can work with me one on one per se, and make any adjustments I may need. I just found it very involved, and somewhat complicated for one who's not dieted per se before for inflammation sake.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I was very disappointed when I opened this book.I thought I was reading his other book, WINNING THE WAR WITHIN, with a new cover.Essentially I was. There is not enough new information in this book to justify buying both.It should have been published as a newer version of the old book, not a totally new book. Sorry, it is well written, an awful lot of good and well presented information, but feel like I was charged twice for the same book.If you don't own the War Within, then by all means, buy this book.If you do, then I'd pass. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has saved my life!
I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars My message board members love this book
I own a very active Yahoo! message board for non-dieters. Many of my members have read and loved this book and they tell others about it on the board. We include it in our links to recommended materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Breakthrough
At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, I will simply say that as a type I diabetic the advice in this book has improved my condition immeasurably. After 8 months of following its low carbohydrate guidelines my A1C has dropped from 8.7 to an all-time low of 6.4 and my daily insulin dosage has decreased by almost 40% (both long-acting and fast-acting). I finally feel a measure of control over the disease and am slowly getting some respite from the constant frustration that unpredictable fluctuations in blood glucose measurements inevitably induce. I must add that I have not even been following the program very rigorously and have chosen to pass on some of its more drastic aspects (to me). I do admit that losing most of my carb-heavy comfort foods was difficult at first (and occasionally still is) but the payoff is really so staggering that I believe every diabetic should be exposed to this information as part of their healthcare education and shouldn't have to buy a book in order to obtain it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Yes and No; Better for Type 2s
Caveat Emptor. Removing all carbs from your diet to control blood sugar is like never leaving the house if you suffer from allergies. Following Dr. Bernstein's advice religiously without being in constant consultation with your personal MD is potentially very dangerous. Restricting ALL carbs the way he advises may help type 2 people who are overweight. Not for Type 1s who need carbs as much as we need insulin shots. I tried this type of diet and looked like a skeleton within a month. In a way us Type 1s have it easier, just more track marks, but removing all carbs and substituting them for these mysterious G/G crackers he praises can and will make you lose weight, give you more lows and create more problems. It may work for some, is probably very helpful for overweight type 2s, and a lot of the advice he does give is outstanding but please don't take it as the final word.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Diabetes That I have Ever Read
If you have diabetes, if you live with a diabetic, read this book. It's wonderfully clear in its explanations and arguments.Supplement it perhaps with the general writings of Dr. Andrew Weil on various foods, vitamins, and food preparation, but take a look at what Dr. Bernstein is saying about protein and carbs. This is a field where there is much disagreement, but I find this book to be convincing and extremely helpful. The best book on diabetes I've ever read. ... Just plain great. Bought this again to give as gifts. Has helped friends and family members achieve weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. An easy to follow and stick with plan that works in an easy to understand format. Thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars another diet book
Normally, I am not one to read "diet" books.Recently I have found interest in books about nutrition, but not "diets".I consider the difference to be that nutrition is an overall perspective of how different types of foods either help or hinder our overall health and a "diet" is more of a "do this, and don't do that".Based on some of my recent nutrition reading, I am paying closer attention to the processed foods that I consume. As a result, I came to believe that sugar is probably the one processed food that I consume the most of, either from drinking a cup of coffee or eating a piece of bread that has "honey" listed as an ingredient.Based on this, I decided to read up more on the subject of sugar in general.
5-0 out of 5 stars works like a charm
I, without realizing it, went on a VERY modified version of this book. I am not so much reviewing the book per se, but the concept of eliminating or reducing sugar and starch to lose weight. To boil it down, I had been working out and following a "low fat" diet, only to realize that I still wasn't at my targe weight, and it seemed like I was continually reducing down my calorie intake to even maintain where I was at.In fact, I think I was even gaining weight.Well, on the advice of a bodybuilder I knew, I looked at my diet to identify what the problem might be.It wasn't fat, because I was eating less than 10 grams a day!I was, however, starting each day with a 32 ounce soda, having a sandwhich without mayo and some fat free chips or pretzels for lunch and a frozen "low fat" dinner (usually a piece of chicken, some potatoes and a veggie and a dessert).I was of course, hungry most of the time and killing those cravings with things like cans of soda, fat-free hostess cupcakes, pretzels, popcorn, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars This certainly is a purist's view, but that doesn't make it bad
I see a lot of critics of the Ornish diet suggested in the book; however, it certainly seems as if there is a lot of data available to document the results and support the promotion of the Ornish diet. However, I would strongly suggest reading both Dr. Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease and Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on the same.I think that the Whitaker book provides a much more practical view and also displays what may be a good diet (and life-style, etc) for (1) a healthy person that wants to prevent possibility of heart disease, a "preventative" approach, and (2) a person who has heart disease and needs a "reversal" approach. That said, Dr. Ornish's book is an eye-opener and does cause a concerned reader to focus on the level of discipline and focus that a "reversal" diet and life-style requires.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there these days
After my older brother suddenly died of coronary artery disease at age 40 due to genetically high cholesterol, I needed to learn everything possible on the subject so that I could avoid suffering the same fate.I read all the books on the shelf, among them Dr. Ornish's.I disliked this book because it is rather narcissistic and is focused more on Dr. Ornish himself than on educating us about how to avoid heart disease.Take a look at chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean: "I was trained to treat hypertension..."; "I first became interested in conducting research on heart disease in 1975..."; "I began to wonder..."; "I went to the medical library and began reading extensively"; "It seemed like an exciting opportunity, so in 1977 I decided to take a year off..."; "I hadn't had enough clinical experience to be jaded..."; "I was unwittingly giving many of them hope for the first time since their illness had been diagnosed"; "I went back to medical school and graduated in 1980"; "From 1981 to 1984, I completed my internship and medical residency in Boston."; "In July 1984, I moved to San Francisco..."This is just the tedious first six pages.Trust me, it goes on and on like this.Do you want to learn about how the heart works? You'll finally get a few sentences on that subject when you get to page 42, squeezed in between more "I did this and I did that."You'll get a little info on LDL and HDL when you get to page 51.Sure, there is useful information within the 672 pages of this book, but you'll be forced to become an expert on Dr. Ornish and his life story to find it.And remember, this book is more than 15 years old.Perhaps back in 1990 he needed to devote 300 pages to convincing people that he was correct in believing that diet, exercise, and stress affect your risk of heart disease, but that that is common knowledge and not controversial now.The research is far more advanced in today's world. If you are interested in Dr. Ornish personally and the history of the study of heart disease in the 1970s and 1980s, you'll probably enjoy this book. But if you are serious about educating yourself on heart disease and how best to avoid it, I would recommend Dr. Robert Superko's "Before the Heart Attacks : A Revolutionary Approach to Detecting, Preventing, and Even Reversing Heart Disease" (2003) or Dr. Harlan M. Krumholz's "The Expert Guide to Beating Heart Disease: What You Absolutely Must Know" (2005).These books are more up to date and provide far more useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When I follow the diet and work on the other aspects of the program I feel better, lose weight, am happier and have better test results. The book is easy to read and understand. The program is not for the die hard meat lover. It takes commitment to follow. From the reviews I have read and comments from coworkers and friends, it also takes an open mind and balanced attention.I am currently purchasing this book for my adult son.It all depends on what a reader is looking for.Dr. Ornish does not give a quick fix.I am a believer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from chronic pain / EBV a bonus
I bought this book in desperation as my chronic inflammatatory pain and the crippling exhaustion from chronic Epstein Barr have had me so dependent upon Tylenol and aspirin I feared for my liver and stomach. The first thing I did ( with my docs ok ) was drop my statin drug and start taking 6 gms of flax seed oil and 1 gm of evening primrose oil daily, along with changing my diet. I have to tell you it was the best thing I've done. My muscle and joint pain - previously so bad I worked part time for a bit - is 85% gone!! My knees, my biggest problems, are so good I can walk in the evenings with my husband, where before I was in physical therapy to get through the grocery store. I couldnt even take care of my grandson for a whole evening alone, and now Gramma can get on the floor and play !

Another book offering limited help to those with asthma. As a sufferer for long enough until I learned about the Buteyko method. If you wish to take control of your condition, this is the only therapy that works and does it very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars This food is fabulous!
My husband had bariatric surgery in June. When we arrived at the solid food stage, I was in a panic as to what to cook.Moist low fat and tasty food was quite an order.
5-0 out of 5 stars 100 down and 100 to go
I purchased this book months before my surgery.Once I had my surgery in June, I started going through the book and picking out the recipes that I could have as soon as could eat. This book actually gives you suggestions as to whether or not you should try the recipe depending on what week you are in as well as breakdown of 3 kinds of surgery. I have tried about 20 of the recipes and have loved each of them. I have learned so much from this book.I hope that someone somewhere puts out another cookbook for us post-ops.BTW at 11 weeks post-op I am 100 lbs. down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Book: The Peniultimate Alternative Health and Detoxification Guidebook
This book was out of print for years and I despaired of ever obtaining a copy of my own."The Detox Book" is an exceptional but sadly overlooked and underused lifeline to near-perfect health in our imperfect and toxic world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Fife's program will teach you how to rest and restore your body's natural detoxification abilities.
Functional medicine is ideal medicine made real; it is a new medical model--a more successful way of treating human illness and disease--born of recent technological and clinical advances applied in a fresh methodology. Through Detox, a term that covers regimens for ridding the body of toxic substances. These toxins can be ingested or inhaled: Pesticides, heavy metals, alcohol, cigarette smoke and dry-cleaning and other chemicals. Or internally produced: Hormonal by-products, cellular waste; if not ousted, they can impair immunity and lead to fatigue, mental fogginess, skin problems, neurological ailments or heart disease. Bruce Fife's book, The Detox Book: How to Detoxify Your Body to Improve Your Health, Stop Disease, and Reverse Aging, 2nd Edition contains all the information you need to complete your detoxification program at home. Our body's natural detoxification system is designed to support our health by eliminating waste products from our metabolism and from environmental toxins. Like any other hardworking system, it needs periodic rest and support to continue functioning optimally. Bruce Fife's program will teach you how to rest and restore your body's natural detoxification abilities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but a little unrealistic at times
Overall, I really enjoyed this book.I've actually implemented much of the advice given, such as the All Natural Diet. This book has a lot of really good, useful information, and I was very enlightened on the chapters about fasting.I plan to try my first fast in the next week or so.

Dr. Agatston developed the diet for his chronically overweight heart patients. Soon, thanks to his patients' results, Dr. Agatston's diet became all the buzz in Miami.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
Eat less calories and burn more of them through exercising. It sounds simple, but it's not easy to do.So I turned to South Beach diet. I've found this to be a very practical diet. After the initial first two weeks (the strictest) I've lost about 5 pounds. But, I've done no exercise whatsoever and have eating quite a bit which accounts for the lower than the average weight loss.Check the net for more FREE info.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is for Vegans or people thinking about becoming Vegan
Granted, some of this book made me laugh out loud and reconsider some of the things I was eating. But overall, is a book telling you to go Vegan. The book doesn't talk enough about organic foods and free-range meats. It is all about meat, eggs, and milk = being fat...no matter if it comes from organic free-range sources or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful, but not what I had in mind.
I have long suspected that most of us are poisoning ourselves with food.I have noticed that many food products which used to be wholesome have quietly changed over time, incorporating chemicals and cheap substitutes to increase profit margin. This book certainly supports my suspicions.I purchased Skinny [...] hoping to find easy-to-read advice on selecting food products which still ARE healthy to eat, as well as information on the benefits of certain foods. This topic is covered to an extent. What I did not expect was the vegan manifesto. In the back of the book, the authors state that their primary reason for penning this text was to promote the vegan lifestyle. This information would be best included on the cover rather than at the end.If you read the information in the book through the appropriate filter, it is much easier to glean a little more fact, in my opinion.I did appreciate the lists of suggested menus and products; however, I was unable to locate any of the products either on health food store shelves or on the internet. The product suggestions may be outdated or too regional in focus.Overall, there is some good information in there, but realize that it has a definite slant.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm going to keep this short and sweet...
I will be honest, and say that the only reason I bought this book was because I thought it was cute. After taking it home, I quickly realized it was more serious than the title let on. I had no idea the brunt of the book was about veganism. I was a huge meat eater when I bought it, but let me tell you, as soon as I read about the USDA and the mistreatment of animals, I never touched meat again. It was THAT easy. I will also say that I loved their writing style. No BS, no hand-holding. It was solid (and sometimes scary) facts. So if you want to lose weight, and have a healthy conscience to boot, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
This book explain the GI diet in quick easy terms. It also offers a food guide list of foods which has been very helpful in beginning to use this diet.Plus all the recipes I have tried so far have been easy and so delicious that my family asks me when am I going to make them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and easy to follow!
This book is a great diet book to use when you don't want to feel like you're actually dieting! The "traffic light" concept is great and so easy to follow. The recipes are delicious!I only hope they come out with more!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
I was expecting a greater insight into how the foods we eat affect us and was very disappointed. There are some new insights but overall I found the concepts to be very similar to those promoted in food combining. The only difference I saw was that in GI you combine foods that will keep your sugar level at an acceptable level longer. While food combining focuses on combining foods so that your digestive system can efficiently remove the nutrients and release the energy. ... Read more
