Editorial Review

If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Treat Your Illness or Disease with Relevant Herbs
Dr. Peter D'Adamo has written a very interesting adjunct to his superb book, Live Right 4 Your Type. If you have already read that earlier book, you will find this book adds to your knowledge by letting you know about the latest research about the statistical correlations of various diseases and illnesses to those with various blood types. I wrote down the illnesses that I have more frequently than other people I know, and the diseases I have experienced before reading this book. I checked my experience against what the book reports, and found a high correlation (I have had two additional problems not typical of my Type O blood, and have not experienced three problems often associated with Type O people). I did the same for my wife, who has a different blood type, and found that her pattern reasonably closely matched what is described in the book as well. Then, the book has an excellent discussion of why people with each blood type can be affected differently by each illness or disease. You are also given extensive suggestions for herbal therapies that match your herb type. I have not had experiences with the herbs that were suggested for me, so I cannot comment on how relevant they are. If you already use herbs to improve conditions, you will probably adore this book. If you don't use many herbs, you will probably appreciate understanding more about the potential strengths and weaknesses of your blood chemistry. The book is quite thorough in providing articles you can read for more details, and where to access these articles on-line. If you have not read Live Right 4 Your Type, you will find that this book covers almost the same background material but at a much higher level of abstraction. There is a fairly complete discussion of how blood types seem to have developed and what their chemical implications are. In other ways, the book is quite complete in similarity to the earlier ones. For example, you get the food indications for each blood type, essentially like the information in both Eat Right 4 Your Type and Live Right 4 Your Type. Many people are skeptical about Dr. D'Adamo's work. I found him careful about what he had to say. For example, he notes that the risk charts in the book describe how blood type "in conjunction with other factors . . . may be [associated with] an increased risk for developing a certain disease." As to the diseases and illnesses, I was impressed to see how much different cancers were broken down by the part of the body affected while different infections were also segmented. I always find it helpful to keep the research-based associations to blood type in mind when I read other books about nutrition, health, and diseases. Perhaps someday other health authors will add this perspective to their work, as well. Until then, I am very grateful to Dr. D'Adamo for helping me understand how to make the most out of being a Type O person! How can you turn your strengths and weaknesses into resources for improving the quality of your life . . . and those you care about? Keep your mind and your body full of the most helpful resources you can add!

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy, Health Me, here I come!
Ever wondered what is good for you? This book is great! I was skeptical, but this faded. The approach of the book is to inform and maybe scare you away from bad foods. I had been eating baked potatoes because I thought that it was healthy. NO, they are a healthy alternative, but overall they are not good for you. The book goes on to discuss the new MY PRYMIAD and how to change your eating habits. There are some places were they act like a broken record, EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY, EAT LESS. I guess if they are going to say something twice, it is a helpful reminder. They also offer alternatives to eating foods that will provide more nutrition and keep you fuller longer. Did I metion that the recipes in the back are great! ... Read more

This cookbook is amazing. The author is a genius on how to get foods that are equal to or better than their egg-and-dairy counterparts. Love it love it love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've got more vengeance than you can shake a stick at
When I first checked this book out from the library I did something that I've never done with a cookbook before--I sat down and just read it. The author is so entertaining, witty, and engaging that I just liked reading the recipe descriptions, punk points, tips from Fizzle the cat, and litte vignettes that are woven into the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!
Although not a Vegan, I highly recommend this book to everyone and anyone. First, whether or not you are vegan, I am certain that several recipes from this book will become favorites of yours as they did for me. In addition, this book would have stood on its own as a book of stories. If you want to laugh out loud as I did while reading this book on the bus on my way to work, simply check out the stories written in the introduction, before each section and preceding each recipe as well as Ms. Moskowitz' punk points and 'Fizzle Says:' paragraphs. Great recipes for every meal of the day and scrumptious desserts for any time. No matter what your age, gender, musical inclinations or dietary preferences, this is a cookbook for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amateur's advice
There are those who commend this book for its encyclopediac consideration of the supermarket food world, and its careful evaluation in health terms of each and every item we might put in our mouths. They also commend it for Nestle's careful consumer approach in which she insists time and again that the potential consumer- eater read labels, know what is going in to their mouths.
5-0 out of 5 stars Most practical and fun nutrition book ever
I read a lot about nutrition. Before I read this book, I smugly thought I knew my way around a grocery store."What to Eat" confirmed many of the things I already know, but it also provided an amazing amount of new information.Marion Nestle's writing style is funny and down-to-earth.I couldn't stop reading. As I started each new chapter (cleverly organized like a trip through a supermarket), I found myself getting excited to learn about each new topic ("oh boy, milk!").I love that Marion always shares her own opinions and how she personally shops for each item.I learned so much about nutrition and food marketing from this book.I am able to use this information every time I go to the grocery store.I feel so much more comfortable about my food choices and understand the marketing hype that I see all around me.Wonderful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
At 624 pages, What to Eat certainly looks appealing and authoritative. However, while Nestle's book does contain some good information, it doesn't live up to it's bold title. I was expecting more of a treatise on healthful foods, mixed with an equal part of what foods to avoid. Instead, Nestle focuses entirely on what to avoid, brushing off, for example, vegetables with a single, scant chapter. Now, I could see the value even in this approach, but the organization of the book (a meandering collection of chapters that do not flow coherently) and Nestle's odd tone of not giving a very clear opinion of what to avoid or not to avoid, mars the book's practical value significantly. A better book that fulfills her objective more thoroughly is Andrew Weil's Eating Better for Optimum Health, which covers almost entirely the same topics, while being thoughtfully organized and much more informative. ... This book shed a lot of light on why I was not succeding in my weight loss goals.I had already given up almost all sugar and all artifical sweetners, eating mostly whole grains, and had been doing a 45-60 min cardio workout 3 times a week and getting no where in the 50 lbs I need to lose.In the past I had a lot of success following Atkins, but felt that it was unhealthy and it left me feeling sluggish and miserable.I stopped Atkins and started the daily losing battle with my weight. After three weeks of following the basic principals I have had successful weight changes for the first time in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Wait To Feel Fantastic! Buy This Book NOW!
I am in my late 30s, and I have a hormonal imbalance, coupled with insulin resistance caused by poor dietary habits. Unfortunately, after years of seeing physician after physician, my condition had to be essentially self-diagnosed since all of the blood tests always came back 'normal'.

This book changed my life. It was given to me free when I bought some vitamins, and I am so glad it fell in my hands! All the things Dr. Schwartzbein says have made sense to me for a long time - I never did jump on the low fat bandwagon and knew that natural was always better than man-made (butter vs. margarine). What I didn't know was WHY I felt so bad when I ate sugar or how harmful damaged fats were. Just cutting out damaged fats alone has caused my chronic stomach aches to cease! I will follow this plan for the rest of my life, and encourage everyone I know to do so, too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for weight loss.
The book does address weight loss throughout, however it also does a good job of educating the reader in how to balance and maintain pH balance in the body. There is a short chapter educating the reader on blood including slides of blood viewed by a microscope before and after the body is alkaline. If that doesn't convince us to embrace pH balance in the body then the slides of blood after being on the most popular diets will. The book details how different brands of bottled and munincipal water affect body pH. It expounds on the value of fat in the diet.A short chapter indicates optimum foods to eat followed by another short chapter on fitness. The supplements chapter is very well done and supports what I have learned after many years of informal study. There are nice encapsulations throughout the book and nicely done in Chapter 11 "Take Seven: Steps to Your Ideal Weight" pages 190 - 211.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAST WEIGHT LOSS...
My husband and I both followed the Master Cleanse with great results. He lost 11 lbs and I lost 16 lbs in 10 days! This is coming from two people who aren't over weight or have any health problems. After a while we both grew very tired of the lemonade and this eventually lead to the completion of the program. Over all a good challenge to resist food for 10 days and feel/look great after. This book is a great buy...if you have 10 days and want fast results, this is a program for you. Good luck...

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is well organized and easy to follow even for those who are new to the kitchen. When I started this diet this was the main book I used because it made things simple.I started out as a novice cook who was extremely anxious about all the work that I foresaw in giving up sugar, yeast, wheat...and now I don't find it all that difficult and I'm a better cook for it!My only criticism is that sometimes the recipes are too similar, but it does teach a novice like myself what foods work together and how to make alterations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turned our boy around
I thought I was fixing reasonably healthy foods, but was amazed to realize that even my all-purpose flour had "malted barley flour" lurking in it.Cooking with the express intent of minimizing neurotoxins has transformed our 6-yr-old high-functioning autism boy.We had seen multiple doctors, and had been told that to function in school he would probably need medication. On this diet, his explosive meltdowns disappeared almost completely starting from the 4th day on Stage III.We also use a probiotic (Kirkman Acidophilus Plus), Yummi Bear vitamins, a calcium supplement, a vitamin C supplement, and the recommended Nystatin.See other books on biological treatment of PDD for the use of activated charcoal to minimize "die-off" reaction from Nystatin. We ramped up the Nystatin slowly, which probably helped. Now we are encouraged enough to explore some of the other PDD biological treatments (e.g. heavy metal detox).I also feel like I have learned how to really cook for the first time in my life!Big learning curve, but worth it!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Motivation!
Ok...so most people who know me know I have a slight obsession with this show....and I was surprised to note when I was getting the synopsis for this post, one reviewer didn't think that the diet was covered adequately...and in some respects I agree...because the diets for each person on the show is individualized with the help of a dietitian...so they can't really say *all* of the contestants did X, Y & Z and had X results. What the book does give you are some parameters as to what the best choices are and instructs you to go out with that information and make choices based on your own personal preferences and staying within the caloric guidelines.Since I've already begun my own "healthy living" adventure, I already had some firm ideas on what I wanted to do and I found that the book complimented what I already had planned and allowed me to expand the scope a bit.The version of the food pyramid printed in this book is surely more in line with what I think is proper and realistic, so it gets big kudos from me in that respect. The exercise program was brief in my opinion...but again, these were tailored to the specific contestants by professional trainers and they certainly don't' want t-o give away all their secrets either...but the info is good and I suspect you can get more out of it if your willing to buy the exercise DVD that goes with it (I'm renting from Netflix first...to see if it's worth spending the dollars on first). The bulk of the book was personal snippets about the contestants (which I could have lived without...but perhaps necessary for those who didn't watch the show, but are curious about it). There is a selection of recipes at the end which there are about 7-10 that I will try...they all look quite good and are not bad with the fat and calories...so for the price I paid for this book (12.89) I'd say it was definitely worth it...but for those looking for a set in stone, do X, Y & Z diet and exercise plan...this is not going to make you happy, you may want to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far more than your usual weight loss title
The Biggest Loser: The Weight-Loss Program To Transform Your Body, Health And Life (1594863849, $18.95) comes from the Biggest Loser Experts, cast, and Maggie Greenwood-Robinson, Ph.D. and provides the popular NBC-TV show's insights on how overweight contestants teamed with celebrity trainers to shape up. Millions have seen the changes and show: in book form you'll have easier access to the plans designed by the show's medical experts, along with recipes, to make the most of the trainer tips. A 12-week fat-blasting program pairs with tips and motivators along with participant insights and experiences making for far more than your usual weight loss title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for motivation and inspiration!
Overall, this is a very good book especially for "fans" of the show. I watch it only from time to time so I am not its "fan". The most valuable part of this book is the superior motivation and inspiration it will definitely provide you. It is really amazing to read about the results of actually morbidly obese men and women who ACHIEVED their desired weight. I have the feeling that obese people tend to get disappointed and discouraged rather fast. That's why the book will be of great help, if you face such issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is better than most of the other Glycemic Index books I have read.
This book covers more information than other books that I have reviewed on this topic. There is a lot of advertising for the Glycemic Level way of eating, but the topic seems to still be lacking in information. The Complete Idiot's Guide offers more comprehensive information including a longer list of foods with with the Glycemic Index levels. This is the first book I have read that shows the formula for figuring the index yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this book!
My Boss bought me this book when I was diagnosed with Adult II Diabetes. This book is more precious to me than a raise!I love the way the author composed the book...humor, honesty, great recipes and tips.Highly recommended for any person who wants to live a healthy life style.I have lost 15 lbs and my husband has lost 20.We both want to lose 30 lbs each.If you follow the suggestions in the book you will lose the weight. No matter if it is 30, 50 or 100 lbs...the glycemic works. The book encouraged me to find a good cookbook for glycemic recipes and I found a great one here at Amazon.com.

I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance about a year ago, and while doing my research, I recently discovered the GI Diet and I have to say this book is wonderful at explaining all the terms and giving me the basics, so that I can finally lose weight.I am currently involved in Weight Watchers and kept gaining weight each week. With this diet, I am LOSING and it feels wonderful.WW is great for support and encouragement, so I am using it together with the Glycemic Diet. This book has helped me tremendously and it is very easy to read and understand. Some of the GI books were way too technical.Thank you for this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I mostly wanted to be able to look up regular food made at home (i.e.biscuits, macaroni and cheese). I resorted to trying to think of a company thatmakes that food, so I could look up a brand name, but this didn't always work. The Quick Guide sometimes helped in finding these general foods, but not always.
5-0 out of 5 stars this book lives in my purse

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy tool
This book is good for diabetics or anyone counting carbohydrates. Some extraneous information (protein and sodium) is included. Most major resturant chain foods are included. Must use index in back to locate foods since book is not alphabetic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO COMPLICATED
WAY TOO COMPLICATED DIET TO FOLLOW
5-0 out of 5 stars common sense or not?
I lost 5lbs the first 2 weeks. I regularly eat very heathy, but need to exercise more(or at all), so i was suprised that i lost the 5lbs just from eating a little healthier and have managed to keep it off. I think it is a good book if you are interested in learning better eating habbits, if you eat poorly. Alot of it is common sense about portion size and eating the right foods for your body to function properly. I don't think you need all the suppliments that she wants you to take, a good multivitamin doesn't hurt though. I didn't follow through after the two weeks because of my schedule, but i do plan to give the rest of it a shot. I think if you need something to jump start you to eat healthy and get rid of all the junk you eat than this is a good way to go. If you really like your junk food than this book is not for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ann Gittleman is great.
This doc really knows her stuff. While you might need to have a high IQ and time to digest.... She is very very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE NEW GLUCOSE GENERATION SHOPPERS GUIDE
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.VERY INFORMATIVE AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND

4-0 out of 5 stars More U.S. Products
Readers frustrated by the lack of information on common U.S. -based foods in some earlier editions will be pleased with this updated listing. Mostly generalized foods ("graham crackers, plain") and some U.S. brand names ("Snickers bar, regular") are included with glycemic index, common serving size, available carboyhdrate (carbs-fiber) per serving, and glycemic load per serving.
1-0 out of 5 stars Of little value
I bought this book with "The new Glucose Revolution: Low GI Guide to Diabetes." Compared with the other book, getting this one was superfluous as both books contain essentially the same information (I don't know if this is the case for all books of the series). The guts of both books consists of a table of GI values, total carbs and GL per serving. This table is preceded by a short introduction and discussion, and then followed by another table of food classes with individual items ranked by low, medium and high GI values. Both books have these features, but I did notice some
