5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars The truth about the world's most famous, most glamorous and most controversial diet.
When Dr Atkins first launched his diet, he was accused of breaking one of the most fundamental laws of nature. If you eat more, you'll get fatter. People also said it could kill you. Fat increases your cholesterol levels. You'll get a heart attack. The only problem was that people who followed the Atkins diet got thinner. While the rest of us got fatter. Then came studies showing that cholesterol levels can actually improve on the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet recommends a limit of 20g of carbohydrate each day for the initial 14-day induction phase. This is a very small amount; for example, a banana contains about 22g. So in this phase, the diet consists of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, a small amount of salad and vegetables, butter and oil. Carbohydrate-containing foods such as fruit, many vegetables, bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, pasta, cakes, biscuits, sugar, milk and yogurt should be avoided.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but confusing
I have been using this book for a few months. The recipes I've tried are generally tasty, if sometimes bland, but it sorely needs an index by food, eg, beef, as another reviewer commented. Some of the recipes require creative thinking, and a bit of cooking experience. '3 large potatoes' can mean different things to different people, and if you want to use another type of potato?Equivalents in ounces or cups would be helpful. And "x cups of pasta" cooked?/uncooked?A novice would have a hard time with this. And some of the titles are more colorful than helpful.A meat salad doesn't mention the meat in the title, so finding it without an index is pretty difficult.

It is a helpful book for me while doing Weight Watchers....the recipes are well written and easy to follow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easier Recipes Needed
Hello-I really enjoyed reading this book. Heather's personal story and advice for IBS suffers is useful (at least for me). Although she does lay out the basic nutritional information on fiber and other trigger foods. Her recipes are far too complicated, I'm a graduate student with very little time for cooking. So the recipes are just too time consuming. I need easier and faster recipes. Some of the breakfast ideas fit into my lifestyle, but the dinners are complicated, although they sound delicious. Perhaps someday I will have time to try them. If Heather (the author) is reading this, please write a recipe book with easier and faster IBS safe recipes. I'd definately buy it! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars New lease on life!!
The information in this book has restored my health!!Not only do I feel better I have lost 13 lbs. in 5 weeks. This food program, plus the peppermint oil gel caps, allows my food intake to stay with me and I am benefiting nutritionally.I am so thankful that Heather Van Vorous shared this information.I haven't felt this well in three years!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating for IBS- A Review
EATING FOR IBS is an excellent source of useful information for persons diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).The author (an IBS sufferer herself) writesclearly and with the compassion and understanding of a person who had lived with the symptoms of IBS for years before a correct diagnosis was made. However, she was not provided withinformation about managing the symptoms on a daily basis. On her own shedevised a regimen of safe foods, herbal teas and a natural soluble fiber supplement that (from my personal experience) works to effectively manage IBS symptoms. She identifies certain foodsthat can cause problems and should be avoidedor eaten very carefully, for instance with soluble fiber. The discussion of the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber and their effect on the digestive system and IBSis the most informative and thorough of anything I have read.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm pretty sure that Julia Ross is a fraud
After I read both the diet cure and the mood cure, I had the (dis)pleasure to meet Ms. Ross at her recovery center in Marin. It was awful. She has a prescribed plan that is one size fits all (for the most part). Her book is confusing and I'm not sure where the research is to back it up. She acts as a therapist, but she's not licensed. I wasted thousands of dollars in her program. She demands that you buy her supplements, see her nutritionists, do what she says otherwise she'll draw conclusions on you based on your unwillingness. She doesn't believe that people should have minds of their own, that they should following mindlessly according to her teachers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch research
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are.Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published.More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil.Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods.Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function.Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice.Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information. Sometimes too much.
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had Chron's for almost 30 years.
During those thirty years I have had three surgeries and have been on just about every medication under the sun. Nothing worked. Six months ago I started the SCD as described in this book and have amazed my Gastroenternologist with my progress. My bloodwork is all normal, my inflammation is just about gone and I am medication free for the first time in many many years. This diet may not work for everyone but for me it beats a fourth partial bowel resection!
5-0 out of 5 stars We've had amazing results from this diet!
This has been a lifechanging book for my husband, who has UC.Although it can take months to see results, we saw amazing results from this diet the very first week.We have remained on the diet for more than 6 months now and plan to stay on it permanently. The Specific Carb Diet is not an easy fix, however. To see results, you must remain 100% dedicated to the diet with absolutely no consumption of "illegal" foods. It did require a major change in our eating habits and my cooking habits. But it becomes much easier and just a way of life after a few weeks of adjustment. Thanks to this diet, my husband is medication-free for the first time in years! We are now eating healthier than ever.I strongly recommend this diet to anyone with a digestive disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Believe It Would Work Until I Tried It!
My husband, with Crohn's Disease, was told by his doctor that food had absolutely nothing to do with his illness or his recuperation. We proved him dead wrong! The SCDiet has led to "health miracles" for six of my immediate family members:Me (Celiac Disease, FMS, Severe Allergies, Asthma), my husband (Crohn's), my 83 year old mother (Diverticulitis, Hiatal Hernia, Bleeding Ulcer, Arthritis), my two brothers (IBS & Celiac), and a son (Celiac). Each of us have no symptoms left and have been able to eliminate all drugs pertaining to each of these illnesses and also reduce blood pressure meds.We were each overweight and have easily lost to within about 10 pounds of our desired weight; three of us losing over 50 pounds each. We feel better, have more energy, and look better than we have in years! We find that it takes less food to satisfy and sustain us when we eat whole, natural foods . . . we have broken the cycle of overeating and binging. The SCD has been a God-send for us all! Please visit austinscdfriends.com to learn how we did it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not for me.
If you are completely desperate and need something really basic to follow, this is a good book.I'm overweight but these exercises were just too easy and I didn't feel challenged enough.I opted to start weight watchers and use some exercise videos instead.I did enjoy the book and it is very motivational if you want to start fresh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nope not this one .....
I was disappointed with this book. He has his picture on every other page, literally. The numbering of chapters is confusing. I truely have gotten much more out of "Strong Women Stay Slim" by Miriam Nelson, which I got from the library, and now have purchased. I would suggest taking a look at Jorge's somewhere before making your purchase~ (do as I say, not as I do LOL) "Strong Women" just seemed so much simpler, and the drawings of the exercises are pleasant and clear. Often times I don't want to do the exercises, then I think "well, I'll just do the first one" and before I know it I've done them all and am feeling better. In fact, I have now ordered Nelson's book on arthritis. Note: There are only 6 basic exercises plus stretching in Nelson's work, so it certainly doesn't take much longer than Jorge's "8 Minutes."

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this book with high hopes having read the reviews here on Amazon but was sorely dissapointed with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a heavy weight
I loved this book. I belive that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not belive that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Big fat Greek Miracle! And WONDERFULLY BLESSED!!!
DO NOT think that I simply stumbled onto this. Well, OK, I did when I least expected it, but this wasn't the first I'd heard of Nick Yphantides (pronounced Eee-fahn-tee-dees) or as people call him, Dr. Nick. I'd heard his testimony on "Focus on the Family". So did that set me up? I don't know. I really don't care either! What I DID know was that when I found, "My Big Fat Greek Diet", it was MINE!!! Yeah, I'm overweight. But I loved Nick's story, and I really, REALLY love baseball! He experiences this journey with an awesome God!
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking to lose weight and never find it again, read on!
If you are interested in dropping 30 pounds or 300 pounds, this is the book for you! I have to admit that the title grabbed me right away; in particular the words fat and diet. I am a sucker for diet books and have read too many to name here but this book truly offers something new, fresh, and inspiring. As I read about Dr. Nick's life, I felt as if I was listening to an old friend share his struggles and knew instantly this was a man who could relate to my weight challenges. The guts of the book revolve around his 7 pillars of weight loss. This is where the magic begins but what he has to offer isn't in a pill, potion or even a particular diet. It is a unique thought process, a paradigm shift that is more valuable than anything that can be found in a bottle. Maybe some of you veteran dieters can relate but I was pretty good at following a plan for a few months and losing the weight but then I would turn around and gain it right back and then some! Let's face it, all the diets take the weight off but this plan actually gives you the tools you need to keep it off for good, to lose those pounds and not find them ever again! I define success as doing 100% of what you are capable of and this book gives you the resources to be a healthy success. If you are open to changing the way you see the world and in the process, changing the way you look in it, you will not be disappointed. Also, check out Dr. Nicks website, healthsteward.com, and read the success stories of those who traveled this journey before you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good edition to our weight loss libraries.
The Insulin Resistance Diet contains some very worthwhile suggestions. Limiting our carbohydrate intake to two 15 gram servings every two hours, and always eating 7 grams of protein with our carbohydrates, is an excellent suggestion to reduce the glycemic impact of our diet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for women with PCOS
This is a very helpful book for women that have been diagnosed with PCOS caused by insulin resistance. The diet posed by Dr. Hart is practical and fairly easy to follow.I would recommend the book to all who suffer from insulin resistance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, something that makes sense!
I bought this book a few days ago and have read it about three times already!I have suffered from hypoglycemia all my life. I'm not terribly overweight, about 20 pounds maybe. I've tried low-fat high carbohydrate, low carb diets, the South Beach Diet. This is such an EASY way to eat!I have not had one hypoglycemic incident since I started eating this way, and I usually have one a day at least.I have known for a long time (through many years of trial and error), that I have to eat anything with sugar with a meal or it triggers a hypoglycemic episode.Well, this book tells me exactly what ratio or carbohydrates to protein I should eat to keep this from happening!Just the thought that I can have whatever I want, as long as I keep the carbohydrate grams and protein grams balanced, is wonderful! Also, I am one of those who always ate in defense mode. I was terrified of being caught somewhere without food and having a hypoglycemic attack, so I would eat before going somewhere, even if I wasn't hungry. Now, I know that won't happen anymore, and I am finally free from worrying about food all the time.I can't say enough good things about this approach.Obviously I haven't lost any weight in only three days, at least not that I can tell, but I feel so much better already. That alone made it worth buying the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading if you have kidney disease
the material is clearly written for the layman.however your own kidney doctor might take issue with the proposed solution , i.e. low protein diet .i know that johns hopkins urology department is top rated so i would tend to favor the recommendations in the book ..

5-0 out of 5 stars Haltingpolycystic kidney disease or delaying dialysis

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible hope
I have met many of the people who are featured as case histories in this book and their story is fantastic. Many have delayed dialysis from 5-12 years. They all had to struggle with their personal physician and with their local nephrologists, many of whom do not believe that people will change their diet to avoid dialysis.Dr. Walser maintained a lonely struggle in this country to get others nephrologists to push a strategy that had a 2.5% death rate (unrelated to the diet) vs. a 24% per year death rate for patients on dialysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the last 'Diet' book you will need
Finally I have found the answers I have been searching for. I feel as if I have read every book on dieting and not dieting and most of them will tell you what to eat, what not to eat or that you are eating for all the wrong reasons. OK, great, I know that...so HOW DO I STOP? This book guides you through the process of recognizing the emotions that lead to overeating and guides you through the process of sitting with the emotions instead of eating through them. The author is so right on with the thought process and behaviors of emotional eaters (such as describing how we may come home and we are tired and instead of getting rest, we have a need to reconnect or unwind and tend to start eating at that point...I certainly can relate to that!), yet she takes it to the next level and beyond by giving tools to deal with feelings and emotions that don't involve food for coping. She doesn't suggest eating celery or lettuce or 15 gallons of water. This is not about temporary distractions, but permanent healing. I have a circle of friends that have recently purchased this book and we can't wait to have everyone go through it and start a discussion group!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Life
I've never written a review before, but I feel very strongly about this book because it's changed my life. One of the author's central premises is that you need to deal with your emotions instead of eating to make them go away. Once I understood it; something clicked. In the past two weeks, I've lost 4 pounds without dieting; the difference is that I haven't pigged out when I get upset. I feel a million times better about myself and know that I can change my life.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Gluten-Free Bible
There are serious inaccuracies in this book that can cause a great deal of stress for a celiac. The section on medications with gluten is especially troubling as it causes someone who thought they were safe to worry for no reason. Most troubling is her treatment of the risks of cancer. Her treatment is both superficial, incaccurate and unrealistic. First she says that the risk is the same whether you maintain a gluten free diet or not. Then she says that the only thing you can do about it is to not worry about it. Her discussion of picking food out of a sandwiches is poor advice. In one section she understands the problems of cross contamination, yet doesn't seem to understand that picking apart food is more of a risk than using a toaster. Finally, her flip advice about how to avoid answering questions is ridiculous. Why not be honest instead of avoiding the questions. It's up to the person as to how many details they want to give. But avoiding the issue is not the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best and the most fun to read...
I started with Bette Hagman's books and was under-whelmed, to say the least. If you want plain ol' comfort food, Bette is the place to go, but for my tastebuds and style of dining, Jax is the WOMAN!!
1-0 out of 5 stars Do not hear, do not obey...
If you have a mild to moderate gluten intolerance, you can MAYBE follow this book's advice and be safe. If you have full on Celiac Disease, you will find yourself sick in a single digestive cycle!

I use this book all the time and have found it extremely helpful while undergoing chemotherepy, all the recipes are very well thought out and very tasty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes
This book has some good recipes, though not enough emphasis on sugar-free cooking. It is well-written and includes nutritional guidelines with a lot of easy-to-do recipes. I found the question and answer section helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book's info is obsolete and could cause harm
This book was written in 1985 (and printed in 1987)!That is almost 20 years ago and obviously not in line with today's knowledge about renal problems or failures. For instance, this book pays no attention/ignores "phosporus", the level of which a patient has to monitor very carefully to avoid serious additional health problems. Anyone with renal problems should review this book with their doctor before using any of its recipes, or better yet, the book should be totally revisioned or taken off the market before it hurts people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook!!
I have had this book for several years, we have tried just about every recipe in it and they are all great! I get complements all the time on the wonderful food, no one believes that the recipes are from the Renal cookbook.4-0 out of 5 stars Creative Cooking for Renal Diets
I bought this book for my mom who is operating on less than 50% kidney function. The recipies are appetizing but a bit out of date. The recipes we tried were very good. The book needs to list the amounts of protein, salt, potassium and phosphorous in the servings.Elderly people who are restricted in those areas need that additional information to help them stay in compliance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down, Best complete vegan nutrition book!
This answers nearly every question about vegan nutrition that you may have. Although vegans may not need as much calcium, etc.... as carnivores....the authors address all nutritional needs from the traditional RDA's.

Editorial Review

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 8 minutes in the morning
My husband and I just Love this book, and all the excellent information,we ordered it and recieved it in no time,I would recomend this book to anyone. Trish Boone

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK AND CONCEPT!
8 Minutes in the morning is a staple book in my house. I can talk myself into doing 8 minutes when I can barely talk my sorry backside off the couch! And it really helps. My waist trims down, my arms gain strength, and best of all, I don't feel guilty! Sure, I fall off of my good intentions bandwagon, but time and again, I pull the book back off the shelf...This book is particularly helpful for new mothers, when you're traveling, the homebound, the writer (me) who wrinkles my nose at most exercise routines, and those who find themselves short on time. If don't get that run in later in the day, you've still stretched, lifted weights and did your body some good.
2-0 out of 5 stars More than 8 minutes . . .
Just a warning - 8 minutes doesn't count warm up, stretching, or the time it takes you to get up from the floor and situated to the next exercise (something that I find really annoying and ineffecient!).

5-0 out of 5 stars loved it
I usually shy away from diet-type books. After all, how great can any ONE be when there are thousands coming out every year??? But I loved the idea of being able to eat whatever I want, just by looking at the sizes of my portions. This book is a great primer to the idea that it's not WHAT you eat as much as it is how MUCH you eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally No More Diets!
I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.
