5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I had needed
A friend gave me this book shortly after I lost my beloved Tasha, a German Shepherd who brought endless joy into my life. Her own life was cut short by cancer, a month short of her 5th birthday.
3-0 out of 5 stars British outlook and anecdotes detract from point of book.
Not surprisingly, I bought this book seeking comfort while mourning the loss of my 16-year friend and companion cat. I did not find it in this book. The book is not bad; but it is British. Grief is universal andrecognizes no national boundaries. But the language in this book is justdifferent enough to be distracting from the main point of the book. There are approximately two references to the USA in the book, and neitheris terribly complimentary. The rest is expository on the greiving processinterspersed with brief, anecdotal stories by others who have lost theirpets. The exposition is superficial, and as previously stated, not terriblyhelpful or comforting. There are other, better books available on thesubject. I would consider this a mediocre, average treatment of thesubject. I would not recommend it as a first choice for greiving pet owners-- particularly in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lessons on relationships and life from a dear household pet for pet lovers and others
Along with countless others, this author has learned why a pet owner helplessly develops a deep affection for a pet--namely, "they demand so little--a word, a pat...Yet, they give us so much." However, in "Paws of Wisdom," Steryo-Bartmus explores a deeper level of the bond between owner and pet. "Although we cannot communicate with our pets verbally, I do believe that we form bonds that go beyond verbal communications. These bonds touch our senses in a much deeper level." It was not until the death of her pet dog of close to fifteen years that the author began to gain a consciousness of just what this deeper connection with a pet had to offer her. As she gradually came to realize--and what she writes about--is that her pet dog named Bunny was actually in many ways a teacher for her. As Steryo-Bartmus comes to understand, the enjoyable, long-term companionship between owner and pet, while rewarding in itself, can be like a fertile field out of which lessons about one's own life, behavior, and relationships grow for those like the author willing to seek them.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you're the only one who grieved over a lost pet
Mr. Conglaton took a heartbreaking event and turned it into a joyous remembrance. His skillful writing enables the reader to acquaint themselves with his pets. This is a moving testimonial to his best friends who were taken from him abruptly.Anyone who has owned a beloved pet and lost them before their time should read this book.It will make you cry, but the joy that he and his wife received from these cats and dogs will keep you reading to the very last page.I particularly enjoyed reading the newspaper columns that he wrote about his friends and felt I knew each one.Must Read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Give me a break
First some background--A few years ago some stray and ferel cats started adopting me. Due to the life they led they all came with major medical problems (FIV, FeLk, FIP, kidney failure and more). I loved them all, I cared for them all through very long, painful, illnesses. I had to make agonizing choices, put them through painful proceedures, watch them suffer, and watch them all die. I loss 6 in the course of one year. And others before and after that year. That's why I bought this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating Life with a Fur Family

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This translation deserved the good reviews. The text has been summed up well in other reviews. A word about the author seems appropriate. It is worth pointing out that W.Y. Evans-Wentz was an American (one reviewer stated that W.Y. E-W was English). The confusion here stems from the fact that W.Y. E-W went to Oxford, England, as a Rhodes scholar. He was a very articulate and erudite man - well versed in the Western classics, Western mystery tradition etc. - and in his footnotes, he made frequent cross references to such.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not "Pop Buddhism,"A Guide For The Living
This is not the Richard Gere "pop Buddhism" approach. This is the work of an English academic in the early 20th Century, as he uncovers an "Oriental" classic for a Western audience.Evans-Wentz even brings Carl Jung into the picture for the Westerners, as Jung's psychology was "New School" at the time and offered a sublime link between Oriental and Occidental thinking.I hold this book in the highest regard, not because it is a mystical Buddhist text, but rather because it offers tips for daily living and and self-actualization.As with most quality philosophical doctrines, this book is a paradox...a book of the dead that is really an abstract book for the living, regardless of religion or nationality. It is a refreshing and enlightening break from an increasingly fundamental world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Book and Translation (1927)
This is the original "Tibetan Book of the Dead". All other versions are a toned-down version of this work by different authors who want to accommodate people who do not want to put the work in. You need to put the work in. No one can spoon-feed this kind of wisdom to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book that I would reccomend to any one.
This is a book that is well worth reading. If you like stories about dogs who help people in ways that they very much needed, then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing story of inspiration and hope
This is an amazing story of inspiration and hope about a very specialGerman shepherd named Grizzly, his young master who battled long andvaliantly with terminal cancer, and the boy's courageous mother who wasrescued from her own crippling grief by this incredible dog. Fulfilling herson's dying wish, Lana Davis began bringing Grizzly to hospitals to visitsick children, and soon began training others to do the kind of work sheand Grizzly were doing. During the next six years, Lana and Grizzlyco-founded two successful animal-assisted therapy organizations, includingthe Utah Animal-Assisted Therapy Association, trained hundreds of volunteerteams to carry on their work, and helped to heal the broken hearts ofdozens of abused and emotionally troubled children. Today, though blind,Grizzly continues to inspire others with his almost unbelievable intuitionfor discerning what people need, be it his special brand of talk or a furrybody to hug.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed I cried - I loved it
The title is a little off-putting - I did not think I wanted to read about hospice patients' last days.A friend convinced me to look at it.It is fantastic. The author relates her experiences taking 2 dogs to a hospice. Each chapter is about her encounter with a different patient. Each story evolves into a parable about life, and death. You will cry.But you will also laugh and be uplifted. You will be amazed at what animals can do to lift the human spirit when it is down.I am not aware of the author writing any other books, but I would love to read more from her - she paints a picture that is so vivid, you feel like you are in the room with her and the dogs.I have given this book to many of my friends and they all are raving about it.You must read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars human spirit lifted by pets - cry AND laugh
This book is wonderful! It describes the authors visits to a hospice facility with 2 dogs. She paints a vibrant picture of the visits. Each chapter discusses a different visit. Each chapter also describes a lesson in living - the author weaves a philosophical lesson in life into each visit. The books title may mislead.I was initially put off by the thought of reading about hospice, but it is not so much about death as it is about life.It is warm, funny, and, yes, sad too. You will cry (as my wife and I did) but you will also laugh and feel warm to read how these incredible pets did so much to smooth the hospice patients last weeks.I have lent this book to my friends and they all are raving about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
This is a fantastic book.At first, I was reluctant.I thought that it would be very sad.It is heartwarming.Michele brings you into the story as though you were there. It is very well written. It demonstrates the true healing powers of our beloved companions. Don't miss reading this book! ... Read more
