5-0 out of 5 stars The Final Farewell Preparing for and Mourning the Loss of Yo
This is a wonderful book and I recommend it for anyone who has an older pet or a terminally ill pet or has just lost a pet. I read it while preparing for the loss of my cat, and best friend, a 20 year old gray tabby boy. A year after I read it, he was diagnosed with lymphoma and this book helped me so much during that time. I now buy it for friends who are going through the same. It's so nice to be able to help a friend with a book like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read before your animal friend dies
This is a very good book with lots of information. These authors understand what it is like to lose an animal friend. It suggests preparing for your animal's loss before it happens so that one doesn't have to think about what to do when the loss occurs and thing's get emotional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...
We found out about this book through a link on when we knew the death of our beloved Muffin was soon. It really and truly helped us to prepare ahead of time for what we wanted for him--so we wouldn't be making decisions after the fact.It also reaffirms that fact that thegrief one feels for the loss of a much-loved pet is real and not something"silly".While it's not fun to think about, those who have a pet(re. of breed or type) they love dearly may want to have this. There's alsoa chapter about post-death grief and how to help young children deal withthe death as well. Recommended highly! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have seen it work
I once witnessed a public reading by the author of this book. After it was over, virtually everyone left with tears in their eyes; not from discomfort, but from joy and relief. It was an incredibly moving experience.Certainly no book's approach to the loss of a pet is going to work for everybody, but this one has worked for hundreds and hundreds of people, and will hopefully continue to do so.I know that when I lose my beloved dog Brookie, I will be reading this again, searching for comfort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have seen it work
I once witnessed a public reading of this book done by the author.Virtually everybody left with tears in their eyes; not tears of discomfort, but of joy and relief. All pet owners go through this process far too often; this book has helped hundreds and hundreds of people to cope with the loss of a pet and will hopefully continue to do so.No approach to coping with death works wonders for everyone; this one touches most. I know that when my beloved Brookie passes, I will be reading it again, looking for solace.

5-0 out of 5 stars got me through tough times
I can't say enough about how this book helped me. I remembered reading about it years ago in a magazine.I searched and finally found one in a new age bookstore! I have loaned this book out so many times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I've read three pet loss books for adults (two when my dog was dying, and one a few months after her death), and I think this is the best one of the three. The author pretty much hit it on the spot about all my feelings associated with the loss of my dog.The book made me feel that I'm not alone in the loss of my doggie "soul mate", that it's okay to feel this bad for a while when an animal companion dies.Yet he doesn't make generalizations, like some books do.He said certain things work for most people, BUT there are exceptions.Although at the end I feel that I'm just like most people, but at least the book gave me "permission" to think of other options.

4-0 out of 5 stars real grief is ok
I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this wonderful book.I happened to run across it at my local library. Two weeks after euthanising my Cat of seventeen years,I practically fell apart in the bookstore browsing the petsection .I knew i had to look at my feelings of grief. This book wassuch a compassionate friend to me during that time.He quoted alot ofothers' experiences with their losses and the pain they felt.Thishelpedme so much to truly feel my loss, especially sinceI had put him tosleep.the guilt over that can really wreak havocwith you. There is a sectionspecifically about that ,too. His chapters cover all the ways you can lose apet, which waswelcoming. What I loved most about it was his understandingthat your grief is as real as losing a person, just as deep and yourlove, just as strong. As soon as Iopened the book,I didn't feel foolish anymore, and let the tears flow. And consequently,I was able to move through mygrief much quicker. It's a warm, compassionate book, and I was looking for itfor a friend who just lost a pet too.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very thoughtful gift for a pet lover
"In Remembrance of a Special Cat" is similar to a sympathy cardin that it has poems and verse to help the recipient handle grief. I gave acopy to a friend whose pet died. A month later that friend showed me thebook and the pictures of her cat, from kitty to maturity, that she hadglued into the book on the pages reserved for photographs. My friend toldme that, of all the words of condolence she had received from friends, thatthis little book was the most important. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference for helping animals
I actually lost my copy of this book, and I've added it to my wish list so I can replace it. The book is written in anecdotal format; the author uses case studies from her practice to demonstrate how particular remedies are used in particular cases of grief/shock. You don't have to be a Ph.D. or a hugely experienced homeopath to use this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and pactical
I am a volunteer foster mom for kittens and cats, having had about 200 animals adopted.I deal with animal loss-I have to deal with cats I raised in my home and personally feel the loss and adopters who call me in tears and are very distresses. I recommend this book-probably because it doesn't have poetry and stories that move readers to tears, I find people can read that their feelings of loss are very valid and extremely personal-and it helps. I am not a professional but I am asked for help when an animal is ill or passed away and this book is short enough that readers will stay with it.The homeopathic part of this book is not for everyone-probably only a small portion of animal owners. But I followed some suggestions and as they say "It can't hurt to try!"

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a homeopathic materia medica for animals
I think potential buyers of this book should not be deceived by the title into thinking that it is a guide to healing from pet loss, as I was. The author is a fervent, not to say fanatic, veterinary homeopath. What starts out as personal anecdotes about euthanizing or losing beloved pets turns into anecdotes about rescuing traumatized animals (surely a laudable thing) and healing them with things like Natrum muriaticum (chloride of sodium)and Borax (borate of sodium). As a pet lover myself, I'm the last to point a finger at someone who anthropomorphizes animals, but I do start wondering when animal emotions are supposedly "understood" by a human to such a fine degree - is it really possible to distinguish "rage in general" vs. rage from being left alone" vs. "rage at having the throat touched", and that each of these different rages can be cured by a different herb? Perhaps it is possible, and since the author believes in long-distance telepathic communication with animals, perhaps she knows something that I don't. The communication I have experienced from animals has truly been deeper than anything I was ever taught could be possible - but I wonder if layering on too much human emotion spoils the purity, the difference of relating to an animal rather than another human. The book makes several good, though not original points; that giving our pets a peaceful end to suffering requires great courage of the heart, that animals do suffer emotional trauma and do grieve the loss of human or other animal companions. The human-animal bond is indeed a very special, very important bond to forge - the capacity to love another outside oneself is paramount to being a good human being. Becoming the "ambassador" for an animal requires commitment, watchfulness and care; what our companion animals give us in return is beyond measure. Had I been interested in learning homeopathic veterinary medicine, I would have purchased this author's other book "Homeopathic First Aid for Animals". If you are looking for a book to help you deal with grief at losing a beloved (pet of any type, parent, a love), buy "My Cat Saved My Life" by Philip Schreibman. It will help you much more.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to help kids with loss
Written with wit and whimsically illustrated, this light-hearted look at a serious topic softened the blow of our pet's death. Now, we are even thinking of getting a new pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars For young people who have lost a treasured animal companion
Gina Dalpra-Berman's vivid children's picturebook, Remembering Pets, is written specifically for young people who have lost a treasured animal companion. It is about remembering the joys shared with a favorite bird, dog, cat, turtle, or other creature that bestowed unconditional love upon its owner. Remembering Pets tells a young person that it is OK to grieve for the loss of a beloved animal, and to embrace the joys of a new pet. Highly recommended for any child who has outlived his or her cherished animal friend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help in dealing with the loss of a pet
Most of us have lost a pet, many of us at a time when we shared that loss with children. The text and illustrations of this book can help children deal with that situation. The book is honest and comforting, helping kids to think about how important their pet was, but also the value in having had that pet, and how those memories can continue to enrich our lives. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Softens the Pain of Losing a Pet........
.....having just lost a cat that I'd had for fourteen years, I can tell you that the pain is terrible and that the one thing that can reduce the pain is someone who has been through it and who understands. Dr. Julie Kaufman, an animal chiropractor, has compiled a collection of wonderful stories written by people who have lost pets, be they cats, dogs, a horse or a beloved goldfish. It helps relieve one's own grief to read how each individual dealt with the loss, memorialized a pet and in some cases wrote poetry or even attempted to contact a departed animal spirit. She even includes relaxation and breathing techniques to engage in while thinking of one's beloved lost companion. This book was recommended to me by a friend and is wonderful for anyone dealing with the terrible grief that accompanies such a loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of great comfort by an excellent doctor.
My 19-year-old Persian cat, Tilly, is a regular visitor to Dr. Julie. She is the warmest, gentlest and most knowing doctor I have ever known. She has helped Tilly with her severe arthritis and greatly reduced her pain. Thisbook is filled with stories of the animals Dr. Julie has known and treated. There is also an excellent interview with veterinarian accupuncturist Dr.Heather Evans. This book will speak to your heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Addition To Any Outdoorsman's Collection
I purchased Mr. Thiel's book some time ago (December 1994), but have very fond memories of the frequent times that I have read its pages. The content of the book weaves masterfully through historical context coupledwith an easy to read style of story-telling narrative.Mr. Thiel'sresearch on the timber wolf in America's Dairyland is impeccable.Themanuscript guides the reader from the wolves beginnings in the State andsubsequent extinction, to the modern day re-introduction of "canislupus" to the Northwoods.Having lived in Wisconsin for a portion ofmy lifetime (and anxious to return!), this was a must read. However, it isnot only a book for Wisconsinites, but a well spun chronicle for all ages, and folks from every State in the Union who take an interest in themajestic wolf! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great therapy
I contributed the story about "Holly".She was my 15 year old poodle who saw me through the death of my father when I was eight, my teen years and becoming an adult. She died right after my 22nd birthday.Writing my memories of Holly was very theraputic for me.Since then I have lost another beloved pet (Chelsea, a seven year old Himalayan cat) and the stories in this book helped me through my grief. My advice to all pet owners is have this book bought and on a shelf BEFORE the lost of your four-legged friends. The book will be there waiting for you when you need it.
