5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant essay on the tragedy of losing treasured friends
A wonderful book examining pet loss from multiple perspectives as observed by a humble country veterinarian.Through his career as a farmer, student, and professional caregiver, the pain of losing a loved one remains constant. Dr. Orzeck shares personal tragedies, as well as those of his friends and colleagues.A touching portrayal of the pain we all endure when a beloved pet is lost, regardless of species or circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for all animal lovers!
Dr. Orzeck addresses some difficult issues in euthansia with a sense of wonderment and love towards animals. The book brings both tears and joy as "Doc" describes many of the creatures that he has enjoyed in life and grieved in death. As a veterinarian, he has illuminated one of the hardest chores an animal doctor has to perform with both compassion and sensitivity. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, anyone who aspires to be a veterinarian or anyone who has recently lost a pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal Companion Memorial Kit
I recently lost my little dog, Toby, through an animal attack. I have been devastated. Toby was my heart. In the local bookstore I asked if she had anything on pet loss and she showed me this book. I read it through and found so much comfort. No where else had I come across such inspirational material with regards to our beloved animal friends. I wrote his name an the cards, and reread the book. The journal was enormously helpful and I wrote the things about him I didn't want to forget . From there I made a small scrap book, using the paragraphs I'd written in the journal.
5-0 out of 5 stars Covers the entire process from initial loss to phrases of grieving and considering a new pet
Rainbows & Bridges is the first set to address the need for mourning the death of an animal in the family, offering the clergy member authors' insights on healing. It's more than a book - it's a kit of materials which walks adults, kids and even other household pets through the grieving process, identifying 'rainbows' and 'bridges' which allow the user to move from grieving to recovery. From what things should never be said to someone whose pet has died to how to support a person suffering from pet loss and how kids and adults adjust, Rainbows & Bridges covers the entire process from initial loss to phrases of grieving and considering a new pet.
5-0 out of 5 stars You Are Not Alone
The kit is wonderful and I know it will help a lot of people through the grief that comes from losing a beloved pet.Just knowing they are not alone in that grief will be healing.Hearing the stories of other people who have experienced what they are experiencing will give them the courage to go on. ... Those of us who have ever loved a dog will be deeply moved by this collection of stories. The authors range from dog trainers to owners of a beloved household pet, but each writer captured something of the gift dogs give their human companions. My only complaint with the book was with the occasional typographical errors that the publisher should have caught. The book was most impressive in every other respect. It tugged at my heart strings, and I am sure that other readers will share my feelings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for anyone in the animal care industry
I was desparately looking for a book on grieving the loss of a pet when I lost both of my cats to illness. I was prepared for one loss, but not the other, which took me by surprise. I came across this work by Lagnoni, Butler and Hetts, and found that it not only helped me see what was going on in my own emotional situation, but it also taught me what I should be looking for in a veterinary clinic. Working as a volunteer at an animal shelter, I also see the effects of euthanasia on the workers there, and perhaps this book would be helpful to some in those situations. It is clearly written, stocked with good examples and true life experiences, and sets up a protocol for vet practices to be better able to deal with their clients, both people and animals, in life changing situations. It accepts that animals are a large part of many peoples lives, as important as people. In doing so, the authors recognize that compassion, empathy, and understanding are necessary to help clients cope with their pet loss, and grief. It also recognizes that staff working in the animal health care field are also in need of guidance on how to cope with these difficult situations. The book is well organized, and makes a good reference text for specific situations, as well as provides general overview on how to achieve a compassionate and caring clinic. ... Read more

For those who have ever loved and lost a beloved, this guide is a great source of comfort.Sensitive and heartwarming, a wonderful gift when words just are not appropriate. The unconditional love of a pet is such a source of joy, but when we lose them, the heartache can be unbearable.Having been there, I understand how paralyzing grief can be.Arlene Millman...

5-0 out of 5 stars For Those Deeply Grieving, You Have Found Help
Purchasing "Legacies of Love" was perhaps one of the best things I could have done to help me through my grief after losing my precious dog on 3/7/02.It has only been a few weeks, and I listen to Teresa's soothing voice and comforting words every day to get through this "coping" period. Her validation that deep grieving over pet loss is undervalued by many on-lookers and "supporters", but completely normal to those of us grieving, brought a sense of peace during a time when there are so many emotions. Those who have lost their companion(s) and don't know how they will go on, will find Teresa's tapes a tremendous source of comfort and graceful inspiration. In honor of my beloved Pupster, I have purchased two additional sets of "Legacies of Love" to donate to my veterinarian's office in the hope that someone facing deep grief after losing their animal will find as much comfort in her words and wisdom as I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soothing
Very soothing voice, tone and message. She really helps the hurt and I am glad I made this purchase.I will share it with others and recommend it.I only wish there was a bit more insight into the religious side of loss - something that I could know was of God.Still - excellent. ... Read more

Pet Loss and Human Emotion - guiding clients through grief by Cheri Barton Ross, MA & Jane Baron-Sorensen, RN, MA, MFCC The seriousness of issues that can arise from the loss of a pet and the severity of feelingsexperienced are explicated with great expertise and sensitivity by Ross andBaron-Sorenson.This book is designed to assist anyone in the helpingprofessions to understand what a pet owner may be experiencing when theircompanion animal dies.Teachers, clergy, mental health professionals, veterinarians and staff, and anyone who has ever experienced the loss of apet will benefit from the authors advice and years of experience in thisbeautifully written book. The authors begin with a description of the welldocumented benefits of animal owing for children, the elderly, people withAIDS, the terminally ill and the handicapped as well as for the generalpublic. They suggest an assessment of the role an animal plays in the lifeof the client and careful consideration of how that affects their dailyfunctioning, self esteem, sense of well being and identity. The phenomenonof "Animal Collectors" (individuals who keep animals in greaternumbers than they can humanely care for) is described and the authorsexplain how to avoid the pitfalls in therapeutic intervention with them. When an animal dies the authors find that pet owners go through the samephases as grief as for human loss and suggest strategies for supportivetherapy.Specifics about the procedure of euthanasia are given along withguidelines for assisting clients in working through all the issues thatpresent before, during and after euthanasia is performed.Client issuesstemming from euthanasia will range from memories of other deaths tosituations where the client and pet share the same illness. Information on how children of varying agesassimilate loss and how to communicate the facts of death or euthanasiawill be of invaluable help to anyone working with children and to parents. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ways To Work Through Your Grief
Sometimes losing a dear animal friend can seem more overwhelming than the loss of a human in our lives. This is one of the many things that complicate the grieving process. The author explains that there are many bounds set by society and our own inner voice that attempt to dictate how long and how much we should mourn a beloved companion's passing. She explains why the loss of an animal can be a much more raw experience than the loss of a family member, friend or relative because of the mixed feelings and complicated relationships that we have with other humans. That simple, loving animal spirit that was so close to you is suddenly gone. There is no buffering element, no memories of a heated exchange that soured your relationship - nothing to blunt the pain. This can bring feelings of confusion and guilt, or painful memories of the loss of a child or spouse, and many other emotions. The author does an excellent job of explaining the reasons for these feelings, and suggests many different ways of working through them. She explains the phases of the grieving process and where to find help if serious emotional states are triggered. She also explains that we frequently project a part of our own psyche onto our pets, which can unleash unexpected effects on their passing.4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm hug for your broken heart
This book is like receiving a hug from a whole bunch of people who have also lost their special pets and feel as bad as you do. It is brief, basically every chapter deals with one stage of the grieving process and offers stories/situations that you can identify with and offers advice on healing and validation. That's it no more and no less. Don't expect a bunch of info. on any issues of any sort. I would suggest that you also get another book such as "Coping with sorrow on the loss of your pet" by Moira Anderson, which is excellent and deals with a lot of issues and is very informational. However, do get this book it gives you what you need when you're in pain and need a shoulder to cry on.4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read on a very tough subject
My vet lent me a copy of this book after my dearly, beloved 17 1/2 year calico cat died. It's a quick read (which at a time like this is necessary -- my concentration level just isn't here) and deals well with such a tough subject.5-0 out of 5 stars dealing with your sorrow
After having my animal put to sleep after trying other alternatives with no results, I had to deal not only with the grief but guilt. Why guilt, that I couldnt answer since I had spent thousands of dollars on a dog trying to make him live a little longer. I found this book and after reading this not only did it help ease my mind, it also helps me when Im feeling down.I miss my collie but I have come to realize there is a time you have to do whats best for them and not whats best for you. For anyone who has lost a pet, those cherished loved ones of our family, this book will remind you of why you made an animal a part of your life in the first place. The memories of love and joy that our pets have brought us and why it was all worth it, even with the heartbreak of losing them. They give us comfort, love and laughter. This books brings forth those warm, sentimental feelings once again. This would not only make a nice gift for someone grieving the loss of a pet, but also bring comfort to us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Working through the pain of loss of a pet
In our society we have various acceptable ways to deal with the loss of a loved one.Everyone knows what is expected of them and the rituals that we go through to help us to work through the grief. However, the loss of a family pet can be very devastating and leaves the pet owner with no set of rituals to help move pass the pain."Parting Words/Parting Ways: Saying Good-Bye to Your Pet" fills that void.5-0 out of 5 stars Parting Words/Parting Ways: Saying Good-Bye to Your Pet
A beautiful tribute to pets of many, like me, who loved them dearly.Personal testimonials and words of love spiced with writings of people like Winston Churchill, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Eliot and those of whom you've never heard but whose thoughts are beautiful seques to the pet owners' loving messages.Laura Ritter Carlson has a heart of gold and a true understanding of God's gift to humans (our pets) and those of us who loved and continue to love them.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent expression of grief.
My late wife left behind dozens of books on or about cats, this was one of them. While it is aimed at helping those who grieve the loss of a beloved animal companion, reading it was almost like hearing her voice whispering in my ear about how to best deal with her death.A loving gift for those that are suffering the loss of a pet.Recommended.
