Editorial Review

This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brought back feelings....
This book was definitely one of those works where you can identify with what they are going through, yet you still have something to learn. I am a cargiver for a lady who has a disease almost identical to that of ALS (Lou Gehrigs) and the symptoms he describes in this book are ones that I am facing everyday I work with her.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tuesdays At Morrie's, Fridays At The Bank
This book is not inspiring, it is unfortunate.Morrie sounded like a great man who knew how to live his life. However, it is unfortunate that media vultures like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Koppel, and the author (another Oprah-manufactured "celebrity" like Dr. Phil) took everything that was probably special about this man and trivialized his words, commercialized his life, and exploited him and his values purely for financial gain.Albom mentions that the advance money for the book paid for Morrie's medical bills...what about all the money after he died?Hmm...he kind of left that part out.Seems that Mitch didn't really learn that much about greed from his old professor after all, which makes him sort of a hypocrite. What could have been a very special book in the hands of a competent author, instead gets a 200-page shlock treatment, from a sixth-grade caliber sports-writer (who apparently can't write many words longer than two syllables) that is watered down so that the masses can swallow it without too much critical thought. If I'd have known this was one of "Oprah's Picks" I wouldn't have even bothered with it, but I have also heard so much praise for this book that I figured it was at least worth a read.It wasn't.It was not inspiring, it was trite, contrived, shallow, preachy, poorly written...which seems to be a trademark of all of Albom's books.Morrie, you deserved better and I hope you are resting peacefully.I suppose it is good that this book is at least inspiring people, but at the same time you have to wonder about the types of people who would be inspired by this simple-minded shlock.Anyone raised in any decent, civilized background probably knew all this stuff already.I think the only people on this earth who have a true sense of what Morrie was about are his surviving friends, family, cohorts and students.I felt no connection to Morrie with this tacky treatment of a powerful subject, which is very unfortunate.I agree with another review that said that if you want some really great, inspiring words, read the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc. and keep away from this tacky book.Heck, read Siddhartha, thats probably a much better choice.Mitch, your grade on this thesis is an "F -"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifetime with Morrie
As I sit down to write this review I find myself not looking into the book to see what I wrote in the margins, but trying to remember what I learned from the book.I once had a professor tell me "Shawn, you will never remember what the text tells you, but you will remember what the book taught you".This is one of those types of books and as you are reading it, you feel like you are a part of the story.Throughout the story Morrie tries to relay some of the lessons he has learned, and after reading the book I have realized that they are the most important kind of lessons: lessons on living life.I am not being vague about the content of this story in hopes of enticing you to read this, but I simply want you to sit down with this book without any expectations.Have a relationship with it and it will teach you amazing things. ... Editorial Review

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kushner Non-Academic Video
If you are looking for the academic lecture video by this same title (the one hour lecture delivered at UNC), this isn't it. This is a shorter video, with a pragmatic focus on individual persons and families dealing with catastrophic loss. A good primer for health care workers, but does not have the broad academic, philosophic, and theological applications that the earlier lecture video has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this book BEFORE reading mumbo jumbo
I wish more people could see that their humanity in the world rather than try to be God, or relentlessly seek answers when none exist. This is a brilliant discourse on the sadder parts of the human experience. Rather than try to alleviate pain by trying to find out why a tragedy happened, etc ... it is often more healing to also see the humanity of an event when no real explanation is possible. Bad things happen to good people and vice-versa. This world is complex and simple at the same time. But most of all, this book is a blessing against the current wave of New Age blame game mumbo jumbo...
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, well done and thoughtful
This book is an easy and enjoyable read about a difficult philosophical topic. It deals with the practical reality of the exisence of evil and ties it to a combination of random chance and people's free will. That is the underlying thesis and deep philosophical arguments are avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to Brook, John, and my friend
A dear friend recently gave me two books to help me through a very tough loss.
5-0 out of 5 stars ******WONDERFUL and I'd give it more STARS if I could!!!!!!!!******
I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye is such a wonderful, wonderful book!To see my thoughts, actions, and feelings of everything that comes along during the grief of a loved one, particularly one lost by a sudden death.I was even comforted by carrying it with me for over a year.Just having it near me helped so that I could read it anytime.I recently borrowed it to my best friend who just lost her younger sister to suicide and I actually feel very naked without my copy!
5-0 out of 5 stars Offers Hope, Help, and a Pathway Through Grief
"I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye" offers much practical advice for getting through the immediate days, months, and years following the sudden death of a loved one.I wish that I had found this book much earlier in my grieving process, rather than four months after my son's death. For many who experience the unexpected death of a loved one, the shock is so great that the survivors don't even know how to get throught the time between the death and the funeral.I know that I fell into this category, and was knocking myself out to try to be "normal" when in fact nothing at all in my family was normal or the same. This book does a great job of explaing practical, small steps to recover from a great loss. The appendix even contains forms to help in planning a memorial service and eulogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU MILITARY HEROS for Killing Terrorists!
I am sorry for all the military families who have lost loved ones in this war on terrorists, you have given the ultimate sacrafice so that I can sleep safely in my bed tonight. Thank you.
5-0 out of 5 stars The complete story
No matter whether you share Cindy Sheehan's views of the war or this country or not, this is an excellent book. It finally brings out the truth about all of this and who Ms. Sheehan really is.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Time Enduring Work...
American Mourning is more than a simple story of two every day families during a time of war, who have each sustained the loss of a loved one. It is an evolutionary study of the effects of war upon the survivors of those fallen, detailing the elements of the characters prior to and following their loss. Delicately, it details the human strengths and weaknesses required for survival and the belief in faith that holds families together during time of national crisis and personal grief. If you are a fan of the Cindy Sheehan "icon," be prepared for a reality check. Moy and Morgan take you to our hometown and introduce you to the many who knew her best, before and after she embarked on her self-destructive path. They poignantly and compassionately try to balance the truth about a every day woman exploited during a presidential campaign, who not only betrayed and neglected her family during a time of grief, acted vindictively toward the local parish priest after being laid off from a defunct position of Youth Chaplin, met with Hugo Chavez and begged him to withhold oil shipments to America when gas prices were at an all time high at the pumps and Americans were struggling to get to work, turned against long termed friends when they did not agree with her own personal beliefs, didn't bother to thank the many volunteers who remodeled her home after his death, and who joined alliances with the same terrorists who killed her son, calling them freedom fighters. The authors ploughed through public records finding she had not paid taxes prior to Casey's death, despite her claims she refuses to pay as a result of his death and discovered the organization Real Voices with which Sheehan was involved was really a sham propoganda campaign, as an arm to the John Kerry Presidential bid. They emotionally detail the confusion of those who loved her, as they experience her instant transition from warm and loving friend wife and mother to radical, narcissist and attention seeker after being solicited by Kerry. They detail the accelerating character flaws as she clings to her role as "victim" and demands troops who were giving critical life saving assistance to those in crisis be removed from "occupied New Orleans" during Hurricane Katrina. Truthful, gutsy and emotional, these women authors and investigative journalists have the courage to chronolize the truth to the American public about the current anti-war movement and its top icon, by going to the sources in our hometown, the Johnson's hometown, Crawford, Texas, Fort Hood and the Iraq battlefield. Finally, at the end, you will realize there is no question why Cindy Sheehan does what she does and realize it is an escalating continuing pattern. You may find yourself pitying the woman who gave up everything important in life, friends family, children, neighbors and even her faith by betraying everyone close to her, including denying her own fallen son his legacy and feeling heartfelt and emotionally wrenching compassion toward the surviving members of her family, as most of us do. You will fall in love with the strong character and heroism of her son, who closely mirrors his father. And you will love, embrace and admire the Johnson family, who despite their own human weaknesses, have the strength to survive, to carry on and to remain loyal and united in their love of their country and their fellow men, in much the same tradition as the majority of those from our hometown. If you are the mom or dad or loved one to one in the military, it will send you reeling on a roller coaster of emotions, from anger, to sadness, to tears and perhaps, finally, resolve. Kudos for a story well told, from another who, in Vacaville, also knew the truth and begged the mainstream media to get the courage to tell it. And thankfully, in honoring the legacies of the brave young men and women whom the Congress and Senate voted to send to Iraq, this book will serve as a memory to them all in what they and their families have sacrified in trying to develop a better and safety tomorrow. Someday, I would expect to see it in college classes that study grief, the sociology of war, the development of activists and mainstream media bias. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ties it all together very nicely
I read Home with God without the benefit of having read Mr. Walsch's previous works and I must say that I recommend it without question.Since I read Home with God I have purchased ALL of Mr. Walsch's previous work and I have enjoyed them all tremendously.Home with God is so special because we all want to know what is beyond our current knowing.I have always felt that my idea of what God would do and be was quite different from what mainstream religions preach.I never could understand how God could hate anything he/she created. Mr. Walsch's God is the God I have always believed in and had faith in and experience daily in my conversations with God.I recommend you take the book slowly and allow it to become a part of you.We are all one people (children of God) and what hurts one of us hurts us all.Reminds me of the phrase "United we stand, divided we fall."Read this book with an open heart and allow yourself to be healed and comforted and reconnected to God like never before. It will positively change your life.
2-0 out of 5 stars Conversations with God?
Neale Walsh has written several New Age style books on his conversations with God, all of them bestsellers and great in popularity. However, I always get the feeling on reading his works his God is a very wishy-washy one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect...for those with an open mind.
I loved this book as much as I did all the others in the "Conversations with God" series. Although it can be read and understood on its own, its better to read all the others first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting and Enlightening
This book was reoommended by a friend who read it when her husband was dying. He had read it also and found it very helpful to understand the process he was going through and he highly recommended it and THAT SAYS SOMETHING! When my Mom was passing I read it and although I was scared to read it, it actually was nothing to fear....it was comforting and enlightening and made the process much easier for me as the caretaker and daughter.I recognized and understood the things she was saying much better and knew how to respond in some unusual circumstances.I recommend this book to ANYONE dealing with the process of dying.I bought extra copies to give to others who are losing someone close to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
I wanted to do some hospice volunteering but was so worried during the training that I was not "made" for this kind of work as I am a pretty emotional sort but during my training it was suggested that I read Final Gifts to help ease some of my fears. It was the best thing I could have done, though it is never easy to lose a patient it sure opened my eyes to near death awareness and the needs of those leaving this world. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone - one who is losing a loved one - one who would like to work with those dying - or just one with questions of the end of life process. I thank both authors from the bottom of my heart for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A blessing during a difficult time
This book was recommended to my family after my mother received a terminal diagnosis. We all read it and I cannot begin to tell you what a help this book was during my mothers final journey. Not only did it help us, it allowed us to help her. C.S. Lewis joined the human race when his wife, Joy Gresham, died of cancer. Lewis, the Oxford don whose Christian apologetics make it seem like he's got an answer for everything, experienced crushing doubt for the first time after his wife's tragic death. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort In Grief
I read this a month after my own wife's death. I found Lewis's sharing of his grief to be comforting.I found his honesty to be refreshing. You do not needto be a Christian or religious to benefit from this book. I also enjoyed the afterword by Walsh. It helped to put Lewis's book into the context of his life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful thoughts from a beautiful mind.
This is the second C.S. Lewis book I've read and I'm starting to get a better feel for his writing style. He is a very thoughtful man. He likens his wife's passing to that of a blacksmith putting the finishing touches on a beautiful sword he just made. Perfection at last. Now it can be weilded by God as he sees fit. Oddly enough, I've always wanted to think of myself in this same way. A bright, beautiful and well balanced sword that God can make use of when I'm finally with him. But I must first undergo some forging and tempering called "life". I'm not sure where I picked up on this idea. It's interesting to see that other people think in this exact same way.
5-0 out of 5 stars "A tender heart, a steel-edged mind"
In A Grief Observed, the heart of C.S. Lewis has been peeled away, revealing its tender, fragile core--the tender fragile core of a man who fully loved a woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grief Recovery Handbook
As a grief facilitator, this is my one and only text for my participants. It is wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Add this book to your Grief Toolbox
I found this handbook to be helpful, informative, and full of "aha" moments. There was much that I could relate to, especially the lists of commonly heard advice (misinformed, though well-meaning) intended by others as consolation. For example, I was comforted to learn that I wasn't the only one who found the comment "They lived a long life" to be insipid, irritating, and irrelevant.I really liked the authors' simple writing style and clear, concise instructions. The only potential downside to this book is that its effectiveness will be limited if you are working through your grief alone. Many of the exercises are intended to be done with a partner, and although the authors revised the book to include alternatives for those working alone, it's just not the same.As in PTSD work, much of the healing comes from the act of verbalizing thoughts and feelings to a trusted ally.Unfortunately, many of us - especially those who have been ostracized or have chosen a path of isolation - do not have this luxury.Still, I would recommend adding this book to your grief toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!

This book is one of the first great books that Dr. Kubler-Ross has gifted us with. Her insight and compassion are unremarkable.I am sad she won't be writing any more books though. Her latest book, "On Grief and Grieving" is a wonderful book also. There are some case studies to go by and it truly touches your soul.

4-0 out of 5 stars The MOST INVALUABLE book for a child facing an IMPENDING death
This book is an absolute must have for anyone with a child who is about to face the loss of someone special and close -- due to an illness, accident, or age, -- Children have such difficulty expressing their emotions because in times of such sorrow and anxiety, they are experiencing things they have NEVER felt before. They are confused, distraught, fearful, and so terribly hurt - and when all the adults around them are suffering too -- it makes it all the harder to discuss such delicate and sensitive things -- we want to be strong for them, we don't want our angst to invoke their own.....
5-0 out of 5 stars For you or your child to Write /draw out your feelings
I purchased this book for my daughter and now also plan to purchase it for my niece and nephew. After reading the other reviews I knew I needed to get this book and set it aside for when one or both of her grandparents pass away.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light touch on a deep subject
While the individual tips are certainly valid and helpful, an overall organizing principle to group tips might increase the effectiveness of the book. The brevity of tips makes the content accessible, but does not provide much depth topic by topic. In addition, the very compelling illustrations that are included in the book are not tied into the text they accompany. More insight into the background or intent of the drawings would be valuable (while preserving confidentiality of course).

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
Congratulations to the Dougy Center Staff for creating this book. It is a much needed resource.5-0 out of 5 stars World Trade Center attack:Bereaved children will benefit.
The deaths at the World Trade Center and Pentagon triggered a strong reaction in me, especially when I read how many children had lost a parent, because I lost both parents when I was young (my father when I was 4, my mother when I was 5).Recently I had started a small e-mail group of adults who went through similar parental-loss experiences, and it has been very helpful to meet others who went through this. This book has helped my thinking – children see things differently from adults, and feel things differently, and this book explores all that.As a social worker in a former career, I facilitated bereavement support groups at a major Manhattan cancer agency, and realized the bereavement process is a long one even for adults. One of my desires at this time is to connect with those who lost friends or family members in the terrorist attacks (or those who know them), so that I and those in my group might directly or indirectly offer supportive insights. If we could be of help, please get in touch.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for self-help and for helping others
I am a counselor working primarily with adolescents, but this book is applicable for people of any age. I bought it to use as a tool for working with teens, but picked it up when I lost a family pet and read it while I was grieving. Very helpful. Best aspect of this book is that it deals with different kinds of losses in life that we grieve over- not exclusively death issues. The 10 steps have relevance for anyone who has experienced a loss, and the author does a wonderful job of explaining the steps of grief and how humans process grief. It is faith based, and that made me appreciate it even more!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so much...
This "mini-booklet" is basically a reiteration of the stages of grief set within a Judeo-Christian perspective. One could probably stop by the local funeral parlor and pick up a free pamphlet that would be every bit as edifying.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Resource for Those Who Are Grieving
This is an extremely useful resource for anyone going through the grieving process.About three years ago, my daughter, who was twenty-two at the time, learned that a junior high school friend of hers had died. She was terribly distraught over this friend's death.Who wouldn't be at that tender age?

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful when it seems there is no help....
This book helped me to understand that so many of the feelings I had were "normal"....our mother, too, passed away very unexpectedly on March 26, 2006 after just having turned 69...it has been so difficult understanding how a seemingly very healthy woman could just be gone so quickly....
5-0 out of 5 stars If you lost your mother this is a MUST READ
I bought two copies of this book one for myself and one for my sister following the death of our mother on 3-14-06.Our mom got suddenly ill and passed away very quickly and suddenly. We were left saddened and lost and looking for something to read to help us through this awful time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading!
I bought this book for a relative after the death of my mother-in-law.I found that I was so drawn into the book that I had a hard time putting it down each night. The author wrote the book after the loss of his mother who died in her eighties. His experience mirrored my relative's experience very closely. The author shares the experiences of those who lost their mothers at all ages thus appealing to everyone who has lost their mother.I found it to be a comforting book for anyone who has lost a parent. It is a book that will be re-read many times. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Have used it for years
I've used this personally for years, through my husband's illness from dementia and subsequent death. As a retired social worker, I've given a number of copies to friends for use in their bereavement. It's so applicable, small and easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It Grew on Me"
I purchased this book for my dad and myself after my mother's recent death. At first I thought it was going to be a bit too simplistic in it's daily readings, but soon found out that when experiencing grief, simplicity can be comforting. Her writing is clear and concise.
5-0 out of 5 stars I keep a supply of these books on hand.
I first found this book while looking for something to help my sister through the grieving after the death of her husband and my mother who passed away withing two weeks of each other. My sister found the book very helpful and I now keep a supply on hand to send to friends and clients who lose someone close to them.I have gotten very positive feedback that this book is very helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to go on living when someone you love dies
This is very easy to read and very practical. The author has great insight into grief and gives much knowledge for men and women going through grief. The book not only deals with all phases of grief, but also looks at secondary losses as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars How to Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies
I found the book to be very helpful to me in coping with the sudden loss of my Father. It helped me to confirm that I was not losing my mind.

2-0 out of 5 stars How to go on Living when someone dies
Fresh in my grief, I found this a hard book to read. It has a lot of text book information and probably is very helpful later in grief. But, it reads like a text book and I found it hard to process when my grief was so fresh. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for support
I have read this book before and just recently re-purchased it based on some things that were going on in my own family. It is a great primer for both the person who may be experiencing a life threatening illness, or even just a life changing illness, as well as a guide for all of the family members and friends who may be offering support. It provides an expectation for the emotional roller coaster than both the patient and the family members will experience so that they are better prepared to work through the issues, and keep the lines of communication open.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
Someone gave me this book after my husband of 32 years died suddenly.I can only say I wish I had read it sooner. Two points make the book WONDERFUL for me.An acclaimed scientist and author wrote the text in 1977 and vocalized the unconditional love you experience after death.Secondly, when I was a lifeguard I had this experience while rescuing a child who did live but I almost died.My mentor told me I had only an hallucination due to oxygen deprivation. After that judgement by him, I never trusted the vision and feelings I had experienced.I rarely spoke of the incident and only to 2 very trusted friends who were dying of heart problems to give them comfort prefacing my experience with the words of my coach. While 'Life after Life' was validating, Kubler-Ross gets right to the point on page 16.Knowing that past experience was real would have made my husband's death easier for me I think.I hope this book helps you in your journey as the book helped me.I now give this book to anyone I know experiencing death.

3-0 out of 5 stars O Kubler-Ross Youve Done IT Again
MS. Kubler-Ross became famous becuase she was able to make death safe for democracy and in this book she tames death for us, once again.
