5-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to our Brothers and Sisters...A Book to TREASURE in our time of sorrow
When I first read this book my own brother and only sibling had been dead for many years.During the course of those years I had read every grief book I could find, yet not one spoke directly to me or my situation like Dr. Wray's book.As I read her book I was amazed at how her feelings following the death of her brother so paralleled my own feelings following the death of my brother.Losing a sibling is one of life's greatest, and often, unrecognized losses.Although nothing can take away the sadness and the sense of unfairness that we feel when our brother or sister dies, Dr. Wray's words help us to understand that we are not alone in our sorrow.Comfort comes from the knowledge that others share our pain, and as the book conveys, we, as surviving siblings are forever connected.Dr. Wray truly captures the essence of sibling loss and provides a framework for the stages of grief that a bereaved person typically goes through after the death of a loved one.I was captivated by the experiences of other surviving siblings whose stories are so beautifully woven by Dr. Wray throughout the book. Each chapter ends with a "What Helps" section containing many straightforward and practical suggestions for coping with grief. There is an excellent resource list at the end of the book.In addition to recommending the book to other bereaved siblings, I have also recommended it to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. This book will be a treasure to all those who are suffering through grief!

5-0 out of 5 stars From One Who Has Not Lost A Sibling
This is a must read for everyone!Although I have not lost a sibling, I happened upon this book after my cousin died.Through her own story, Dr. Wray helped me to understand what her sisters were going through and how I could help support them in their own personal loss.I keep a few copies at hand to give to friends and acquaintances that have lost siblings.Time after time, I am thanked for having recognized and validated their pain. And time after time the response I receive from those who have read the book is "FINALLY someone understands what I am experiencing." Dr. Wray's book has not only helped me to become a more empathetic person, it has given comfort and guidance to those suffering a tremendous loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars The MOST helpful of all publications
This book was definitely the MOST helpful publication that I encountered after my tremendous loss.Even though my tears flowed freely throughout the reading, I felt the most wonderful resolution and peace at the end.No other reading had this effect on me.Despite already being a fan of the highly-credentialed Dr. Wray, this book "nailed" the spiritual, emotional, physical and psychological aspects of sibling loss for me personally.God bless Dr. Wray! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moved Emotionally Like No Other Book!
I've been reading this book at night for a week now.I shed tears nearly every night, and find myself at the bedside of one or both of my kids thanking God for the privilege I have of being their Dad. This book has almost become a devotional for me.The depth of the writing is stunning.... My prayers are with you Bill and Nicki.Thank you for letting us glimpse enough of your pain so that we can better treasure all that it means to Live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
This is a book that is about real life...and about death and the issues surrounding trying to get back to normal. If you don't shed a tear or two you are not human. (men included)

I feel so lucky to have heard an NPR interview with Bill Hancock about this book. Or maybe it was one of those magical coincidences that isn't a coincidence at all...

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable aid to any grieving parent
Shortly after the death of our son in 1977, I saw Harriet Sarnoff Schiff interviewed about this book on one of the morning news shows.I immediately ordered this book, and it became an invaluable tool for healing from the terrible pain of losing a child for both my husband and me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Educational
This book covers every aspect of the grieving soul. People sit around thinking they must be going crazy with the thoughts and feelings they have in times of grief. This book explains those feelings and lets the reader know they are not crazy or alone, they are very normal, and things will get better. After my daughters murder in 2003 I read every book I could get my hands on and NOTHING helped me more than this book. It covers all ages, and circumstance, loss of spouse, child, sibling, parent, and does it in a way that flows not separating instances so much that only a portion of the book covers what you truly need. I couldn't put it down until I had read it to the end and I felt so much better. This auther can really get to the heart and soul of the pain of loss and let you know you are normal and the reasons why you feel the way you do. I am so glad I read this book and will continue to share it with those in need. It is the only book I have read except for one otherthat deals with the loss of an adult child My daughter was 23 and it was perfect. I bought this book because of a review on this site and I am so gratefull. Thank you Harriet Schiff for this book where ever you are, I am so thankfull

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed by this Book
By giving practical advice and necessary information, this book helped my husband and I get through the death of our infant son 27 years ago. As aclergy couple, we have used her information and suggestions in comforting and advicing grieving parents over the years. When our 7 year old granddaughter died suddenly last summer, we were able to use the invaluable practical information to help our daughter and son-in-law get through the funeral and impossible weeks and months following her death. It is written from the knowledge that only the pain, grief, and life-experience of losing a child can bring. We along with many othersare blessed by having read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, scientific and helpful
Thomas Joiner is one of the leading scientific experts on suicide. This is certainly reflected in his excellent review of major theories and evidence---but what strikes me throughout the book is how compassionate, how human and how personal his own story is. He begins the book by noting that his father died by suicide. Throughout his discussions of the research on suicide--which Joiner handles with great skill-- he comes back to remind us that suicide is about someone's parent, brother, sister, child or friend. Suicide has been a topic of research interest since Durkheim advanced his theory of "altruistic" suicide and anomie. Indeed, Joiner's review of the research appears to support this classic theory. Individuals more likely to kill themselves are either feeling like a burden to others (thus, the "altruistic" model) or that they are so detached that they do not "belong". These are certainly issues that we must all keep in mind with an ageing population---of people who may feel that they are a burden. Joiner urges us to recognize that this "perception" is almost always a distortion--- but it may feel real to the suicidal person. Moreover,Joiner clearly shows that suicidal risk is increased as the individual repeats self-injury--- cutting, bruising, dangerous activities, even tatooing. As the individual becomes more accustomed to being in control of his or her pain, suicide becomes the next step on a slippery slope. Of course, other models stress the importance of hopelessness, depression or substance abuse as predictors--and, although Joiner argues these are secondary to belongingness and burden--- those of us (as therapists) working with suicidal people need to attend to all of the precursors. I hope that this excellent, compassionate, very personal but also very scientific book gets a wide readership. It may be difficult to read "about suicide" but it may help you either understand why someone you know may have committed suicide--or, even better, it may help you support someone and help them stay alive. Bravo to Joiner for writing this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult Read
This book would probably be great for anyone studying the psychology of suicide and is interested in a detailed look at past and current research on the subject.I personally did not find it helpful for someone who is grieving. It reads like a text book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leaves Out Part of the Story
I believe Dr. Joiner exhibits a profound understanding of the suicidal mind and the mechanism of actions required to commit suicide. He really is able to get into the mind of the victim in many ways.Nevertheless there is an astonishing omission in his book -- the failure to address the ways in which antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs can trigger this mechanism. It is astonishing because Dr. Joiner's own father died from a self-mutilating suicide, a hallmark of an antidepressant induced event, and he was indeed on an SSRI as Joiner describes in the preface. To shut out this aspect of the story in the face of all the controversy that has gone on in the past decade and the new evidence that has come to light leading to black box warnings seems highly irresponsible.I can only hope he adds a new section in a future edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Loved One's Search for Comfort
I found this book and "No Time to Say Goodbye" by Carla Fine to be the best books I've read on the subject of suicide.Suicide happens to all walks of faith.I lost a dear friend to this tragic death, and these two books have been very comforting for me.I found the following words in this book very healing, "He fought an enemy that was as real to him as this casket is to us.This silent enemy exhausted all his courage and strength.Only God knows what he was suffering in his soul. But our consolation is that God does know and understands!"

1-0 out of 5 stars Too focused on god talk
Too bad this book focused so much on god-talk and christianity. Religion is a crutch of the weak-minded and Hsu reinforces that in page after page.

Editorial Review

"Feelings of loss don't go away; they go deeper," says grief counselor Stephen Levine, whose work over the past 30 years has won acclaim from the likes of [[LINK]][Elisabeth Ku[umlaut]bler-Ross]. He claims that chronic grief can result just as easily from the death of a loved one as it can from everyday disappointments like "unfulfilled ambitions." Whatever the source of one's sense of loss, Levine argues that grief must be thoroughly worked through, or it can lead insidiously to addiction, clinical depression, and other physical complaints. Borrowing heavily from Buddhist teachings, Levine recommends mindfulness meditation as one of several paths to reaching relief through "self-mercy." Unfortunately, as earnest he may be, Levine has a tendency to meanders in his writing, even in chapters that average just five pages in length. He's right that Americans in particular are too-often taught to "swallow our grief," but (likely distraught) readers may have a hard time wading through his ponderings to reach the far-between bits of concrete advice. --Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some excellent content, but repetitious and loosely organized
This book has a very poignant message about sorrow which is not attended to. It also goes into how and why we sweep our feelings of sadness under the rug. Not only is it not acceptable to be sad beyond a certain length of time in our culture, in our fast-paced world we tend to accumulate ungrieved losses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide for anyone struggling with memories of a loved one
Surviving Holidays, Birthdays & Anniversaries: A Guide For Grieving During Special Occasions is a simple bereavement guide, written by expert and creator of the www.griefsteps.com program Brook Noel, that especially focuses on coping with the particular challenges brought by special occassions. Holidays are normally a time of good cheer and laughter, but those experiencing profound grief or the loss of a loved one are beset by the opposite of these emotions, often at a magnified effect. Chapters offer advice on what to expect in plain and simple terms, such as learning to avoid additional stressors during the holiday season, never try to outspend grief, shop online, don't hide from life, beware of self-medicating, and more. Suggested strategies for coping include taking a moment of silence when needed, freewriting, taking a time out, specific exercises to calm oneself, and more. A strongly recommended guide for anyone struggling with memories of a loved one at difficult times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much or not enough?
I am diagnosed Asperger's/HFA, and I found the book to be useful in some ways, although it did not address issues caused by sensory integration dysfunction, which can also be found in many people with ADHD (not to mention DSI being misdiagnosed as ADHD).From the viewpoint of many people with ADHD, the information in this book is too basic. From the viewpoint of someone further onto the autism spectrum, the information is not basic enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars consider buying it
Hi this is my first review and i'm reading alot of adhd books lately. This book is about social skills, the skills that may not have been learnt easily when you have adhd. In fact after reading this book I felt like an alien learning the rules that everyone knew and realise how I was alienating everyone else with my adhd symptoms. What I liked about this book was it was quite helpful. The information is very simplistic, yet there is a difference between understanding the information and actually knowing it, meaning practicing it. I like to use a metaphor to explain things quicker about this book. It's like sports for example, you have rules to follow, you are expected to know it, or you would get fouled out and you won't even be in the next game. Learn the simple rules first dispite it's decieving simplicity, then get better at the game later when you know what your doing. Real life is not a game, you will get isolated extremely quickly not knowing the social rules. I wish I knew the rules before though, there aren't too many books with this content since your all suppose to know it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but some important issues left unaddressed.
The basic premise of this book comes from the idea from Fulgham's book that "all we know we learned in kindergarten". Novotni interprets these kindergarten skills as basic social skills, which most ADDers didn't pick up on in their early years, perhaps because they were too busy running around and breaking things, or daydreaming too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories...
Death is one of the most traumatic experience in our lives.Even the deaths of strangers affects us in unusual, sometimes unpredictable ways. The death of those close to us, family and friends, can leave us with questions, emotions and emptiness hard to comprehend.Yet, there are ways to deal with these; religion has rituals, families have traditions, cultures have cycles, allowances and expectations, yet we still need more.5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who has to create a funeral
Sarah does an amazing job of giving guidelines and suggestions for creating truely meaningful memorials and funerals.4-0 out of 5 stars Been there, Done that, Thanks!
Having been someone who has done group memorials for individuals of a separate organization with people who have passed on from AIDS, this book give me new insight.I am looking to put together another ceremony in September.Comparing the past events with Rev. York's book, I find that the past events contained many of the elements that she suggests. However, she gives some wonderful insights and ideas that I have not thought of before.I am only about 1/3 of the way through the book I am about ready to change the original structure of the memorial service. All that I can really say is:"Sarah, thank you for your wonderful writing and imput.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Melody Beattie's most poignant work
Melody Beattie is, of course, the author of the phenomenal bestseller CODEPENDENT NO MORE. Since the publication of that first book in the 1980s, many of us in the recovery movement have come to see her as something akin to a mother figure. We are therefore interested in her life, the challenges she faces, her insights, her introspections, her epiphanies, her triumphs. Melody's writing style is so warm and embracing that it often feels as though we are reading personal messages from a dear friend. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Famous Last Words
I expected this book to move me -- after all, saying goodbye to 50 people who shaped our world for the better, cracking their lives open at the last minute by someone who knew them well enough to speak personally -- that's heady stuff. And eulogies aren't exactly fluffy fare. What surprised me was how much this book succeeds by its subtitle, not just lifting the spirit, but throwing down the gauntlet and making death into a celebration of life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Prose
These portraits of notable people are exceptionally interesting and moving, but, above all, I came away from the book inspired.Feeling dispirited in these troubled times? Pick up this volume and regain your optimism as you get an inside look at overcoming adversity, taking on great challenges and making one's life count.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living life to its fullest
This is the second volume of eulogies compiled by Copeland and I was inspired equally by both books. I experienced the eulogies as mini-biographies, as wonderful tributes, as lessons in life. As might be expected, some of the eulogies are more powerful than others. I especially enjoyed the eulogies of MLK, Ghandi, Leonard Bernstein, Ed Murrow and Mychal Judge. Reading the eulogies as a whole helped me to reflect on the ways people live their lives, define relationships, decide what is important and engage themselves. At the end, I walked away more inspired to live life to its fullest and celebrate my time in this world! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every "people helping" professional.
In my experience I have seen little written in depth on the issue of countertransference. As a hospice social worker, it makes me squirm just thinking about how my own countertransference has interferred with effective interventions."When Professionals Weep" offers specific case examples and analyses which we can apply to ourselves and our work. This book was an eye-opener for me--helping me to become more aware of how I "get in the way" of myself. As people-helping professionals we must keep learning to improve our effectiveness, and this book will help you do just that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hannah, too rosey?I don't think so.
I loved this book and it really helped me.Some think that Hannah was preceived as the "perfect" child, and I can relate to that. We just lost our Granddaughter on her 2nd. birthday, she had Cystic Fibrous, but died, not from CF, but during a "simple" 15-20 min. procedure in surgery. Two months after her passing I read Hannah's gift. I took care of our little Bethany, while our daughter worked, and they live within walking distance right next to us.We were together every day, so I saw all the same signs. These children ARE so special. They have so much love, they are almost perfect, with very small "wrongs".Like Hannah's mom, I got that feeling, that they know, their time on earth is short, just by the way their eyes will sometimes look at you. They know you love them so much as they love you, but they won't be here to share that love.Yes, Hannah's Gift was a touching story

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving and Raw
Hannah's Gift is the story of a remarkable little girl and her fight with cancer.
5-0 out of 5 stars a lovely tribute to a little girl
This was a beautifully written little book.It was nostalgic, a tribute; in her quest to understand the meaning of her child's death, Maria Housden has become more spiritually centered. She learned to find meaning in what could have been a uniformly horrible, life-destroying event.Like some other readers, though, I found the book overly rosy. Some of the more existentialist readers will wonder how Ms. Housden managed to overcome the sense that such a death did not have to happen, though it did happen, and to her... ...
