5-0 out of 5 stars the most horrific loss
This book connects across the gulf of emptiness and loss thatbereaved parents are intimately familiar with.It seems to speak the language, and address the pains that those who have not grieved a lost child can only fathom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I felt understood...
Since my son was killed in an auto accident I read every book I could looking for help. I I got more help from this book than any other...It was a like a lifeline. After reading it I bought an additional copy which I actually cut up and left parts around my home for reassurance and comfort. When someone asks me what can they do for a friend who has lost a child, I recommend this book. Since it is written by nine mothers (and nine fathers) who each have a different perspective and different way their child died, this is a book for every bereaved parent, but it is also a book that should be read by everyone. The loss of a child is a loss like no other and this book is a guide for family, friends and professionals offering insight and understanding and an inside unobstructed view into the real world of the bereaved parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the Unfathomable in this Short but Powerful Book
I would urge you to read this book.I would urge you to send this book to those you care about, those who might be hurting in a similar fashion, or even those who have been touched by others they care about who have gone through the horror of losing a child.Unfolding within these scant 174 pages, 9 mothers, with simple eloquence and brave generosity share with us their individual journeys into the unfathomable; a journey all parents often give thought to and quickly push from their minds - "A parent's worst nightmare".These are bold warriors who have put into words their common experiences before and after, and their methods of coping with and defying their pain, honoring their children and attempting to help others in doing the same.It may be hard to believe but I maintain that while the subject matter may be sad, this is not a sad book, but a book filled with love, hope and rememberance.A book of instructions on how to help yourself and those family and friends who share your life. One would be remiss if they did not give credit to collaborator Ellen Mitchell who presents the stories in such a page turning readable fashion that the book is very hard to put down, and last, but not least, to the fathers who get to "speak" to us, albeit breifly in chapter 9, but with just as much of a powerful punch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Help in time of great loss............
This is not for those who are in the first weeks of loss. The honesty of the text can be hard to deal with while the loss is still new. However, when I needed to finally let go after the death of my grandmother in 1996, this book was a trememdous help to me.It was the catalyst that finally got my emotions flowing and helped me to process the grief.I had been walking around in the "grief bubble" for weeks and wanted to cut through the blackness surrounding me.The passages inside were the catalyst I needed to finally get my emotions flowing and process the grief when I lost my grandmother and, later, my father. This is the gift I give to friends when they are ready to move on and step out of the shadow of loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Words I couldn't Say
I bought this book sight unseen, simply because I think he's a terrific author on death. He speaks the language of the commoner regarding death.1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive, Non Offensive, Extremely Useful
Helen's sub-title "The Most Comprehensive..." is spot on.It's very comprehensive and is by far one of the most useful handbooks I've read. And the inclusion "with All Aspects..." is also spot on. This books covers things you never really would think of or associate with in coping with the death of a loved one or just a death until you've been there and even then, there are things that I never thought about until I read this handbook that I'm grateful Helen wrote about so that I felt more comfortable and confident in dealing with those aspects.
4-0 out of 5 stars a good resource
I found this book after losing my father a few weeks ago. I have found it to be a helpful resource and a comfort. The author uses simple language and short sections. The sections are divided so that a person can easily find the topic most needed without reading the enitre book. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous comfort for those grieving
"The Mourning Handbook" is excellent and it hits the nail on the head when it comes to the pain of grief! This book has brought me a lot of comfort and relief as I dealt with the unexpected deaths of several loved ones in my life. This book also helped to not be so hard on myself as I went through my grieving process. This book is very educational in explaining many aspects of bereavement. It also talks a lot about what to expect when you are grieving, how to survive, how to cope, and also how to help other people who have lost loved ones. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has lost a loved one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have Used This Book For YEARS!
This book has been around FOREVER and continues to be updated. Over the years, I have probably given away at LEAST 20 copies of this book to parents of toddlers. It is the BEST book out there for creative, imaginative fun for kids that can only help them to be smart, smart adults.
1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate choice of materials for a book aimed at age two+
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of four not be given nuts, popcorn, or raisins, due to the risk of choking. Therefore, it seems rather inappropriate to include these ingredients in recipes and craft activities in a book aimed at children "age two years and up." Here are just a few examples of activities from this book that use such ingredients:

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all human beings
This is one of the books I recommend as a "must read" for all human beings!I only wish I had found this book years ago when I was helping a loved one navigate her own death.I was so ill equipped, mentally and emotionally.I would have done things so differently-- this book has made me view the dying process (and the possibilities for making it incredibly special) in a whole new way.Megory Anderson is the modern day Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.I now give this book to friends on a regular basis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Embracing the end of life
Megory seeks to bring meaning to the end of life. She encourages the reader to make dying a sacred event. One way she creates this sacredness is with rituals.Megory includes in her book a wide range of Scripture, Sacred Texts, and Poetry to aid in creating this sacredness of space and participants. This is a good resource to have on the shelf when we have the opportunity to help others embrace the end of life.

3-0 out of 5 stars As you leave us
Megory Anderson's book 'Sacred Dying' creates a need where none may have existed--the need to plan our own departure from a world we may hate or love but seldom are ready to leave. Unfinished business, the need to say thank you and sorry, accounts, the desire to have one chance to improve, take revenge ... The list is endless. And the need to be able to choose one's hour of departure, in the way one would like needs to be acknowledged and addressed. Megory has certainly addressed some of these needs but perhaps her being located in the Western world has left out those who live in another continent but who nevertheless will be leaving one day or another.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solace and Wisdom When You Feel No One Understands
This book has been a great comfort to me during many moments of extreme loneliness and pain. Grieving can make you feel misunderstood, misplaced and lost -- and this author truly understands. Reading this compassionate book helped me realize that all of the extreme feelings one experiences while grieving are completely normal. The many written exercises in the book can be tough to work through, but they are healing. You could easily skip all the exercises and find comfort in reading the text alone. I also found this book very helpful in understanding and dealing with people who expect you to just "pick up the pieces" and get on with liferight after the funeral. The book makes the point that Western society in general is guilty of encouraging those of us who mourn to cut our grieving process short. This book is perfect for the person grieving a loss, as a gift for a family member or friend who is grieving, or as a primer for those who are walking with someone through griefand would like some insight into the process and experience of grieving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, infomrative, comforting, encouraging.
Understanding Grief is a compassionate, effective guide to coping with the death of a loved one. Alan Wolfelt presents more than 100 workshops a year for hospices, schools, funeral homes, community groups and service organizations and shared his expertisein helping bereaved people movetoward healing by encouraging them to explore their unique journeys intogrief and mourning. Understanding Grief covers such issues as common mythsabout grief and mourning, what to expect, taking care of oneself in thegrieving process, when additional help is needed, helping guidelines forsupport groups, and helping a friend in grief. Readers are asked specificquestions about their personal grief journeys and encouraged to thing aboutand write down their responses. Understanding Grief is an invaluable, informative, comforting, and encouraging book that is highly recommendedfor personal, counseling center, and public library grief managementcollections.

This is a place where the aged, infirm, and abandoned of the animal world find loving kindness and comfort for as long as they remain in this world. Rita is able to commit her life to this work because she has the heart and soul that are open to the loving and beautiful moments of this world; the takes them in and gives them back in beautiful ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting AND Smart
This book was _very_ important to me after my miscarriage, because it was a kind book that provided comfort but also didn't dumb itself down in order to address the very real and complex stages of grief. Kohn and Moffitt also give an excellent portrait of what people on many sides of the loss experience--mothers, fathers, family members, friends--as they all respond differently to pregnancy loss. I particularly appreciated the chapter on Early Pregnancy Loss, given that the authors discuss how this can be an especially "silent sorrow" and one that has its own special challenges of bereavement. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A Silent Sorrow: Pregnancy Loss
In the words of the late Erma Bombeck, "Motherhood isn't just a series of contractions, it's a state of mind. From the moment we know life is inside us, we feel a responsibility to protect and defend that human being".Perhaps it is that fact that makes pregnancy loss, at any stage, such a devastating, life altering experience. For those of us in this unenviable club, "A Silent Sorrow" offers a powerful, therapeutic journey to recovery...a must read.Kohn and Moffit thoughtfully address every type of loss - from miscarriage to newborn, and those having to make painful choices.Throughout the book they inject real life narratives, validating our innermost thoughts and feelings, while presenting sound advice, comforting words and encouragement on how to cope with every aspect of life after loss.Their discussions include managing overwhelming grief, as well as the impact on our various relationships, careers, infertility and subsequent pregnancies. Chapters on religion and rituals, and the important roles they can play in the healing process, are extremely helpful. The extensive, fourteen page resource list with valuable support group information is a final gift from the authors.According to Kohn and Moffitt, the purpose of this book is to provide guidance, comfort and hope to those in need.I for one think they exceeded their goal and am forever grateful. Years after my loss this book continues to provide comfort when I need it.I would highly recommend "A Silent Sorrow" for anyone whose heart has been broken by the loss of a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Single Best Book Yet on Life After Loss
This book has become a classic in the area of life after losses of all kinds. It is a MUST-READ - in part, because our culture is ignorant yet pushy about how to live through major losses. While this book provides lots of guidelines for how to get through difficult times, it also appropriately repeats the truth that losses are different for each person - and even for each loss.It gives necessary permission for people to allow their unique feelings to come up and be expressed, rather than hiding them or being afraid of them.It promotes the truth that the only way to get through losses in life is to go "THROUGH THEM", not to "get over them.""Getting over" losses is merely a way to avoid feelings and force them to come out through the body (illness)or some other mode that is more accepted in our culture than emotions.Although these feelings may at first seem unbearably painful, the reader will find surprising relief by allowing them to be felt and then expressed either through direct emotions, or through some of the exercises provided in the book. This book recognizes that many people and even professionals may be unaware of these truths. It recommends that you either educate those people or else find a way to do what you need to do to get THROUGH your process without their input.I am a psychologist and have used this book regularly in my practice for years. But more importantly, I am a person who has experienced many losses that this book helped me find my way THROUGH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This book helped me a great deal when I lost my baby daughter. This is a general grief book that is good for any kind of grief, not just death. It helps to understand what you are going through and this book does a great job of explaining the stages and processes of grief.I have recommended this book to many people.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful and user friendly resource for anyone going through grief
I am a psychotherapist with a specialty in grief and loss.I have also taught many all day workshops on this topic. This book provides very practical, understandable and concrete information for those undergoing a loss. Most folks do not understand the grief process and are frequently disturbed by their own reactions to a loss. This book helps validate that experience as well as act as a roadmap for the grief experience. It includes practical tools to move through the process and information not always covered in other grief literature, e.g., nutrition during grief.I have recommended it frequently to my clients and others as a very helpful tool. It is one of the most user-friendly of the grief books on the market. ... Read more

One of the hardest things in life to deal with is the passing of a loved one.I experienced this pain as a teenager when two of my good friends were killed in an alcohol related auto accident. In the 27 years since that time I have read many books on Near Death Experiences (NDE's) and After Death Communications (ADC's).The amazing thing I have learned is that life continues on after our physical death, just like the Bible says.Of this I have no doubt.

Enduring the pain of losing a loved one is certainly among life's biggest trials, and there is no "quick fix" for dealing with the grief. Before you can solve a problem you must understand it, so it's helpful to have some expert assistance for such a big endeavor. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!Great read for a chronic problem today!
I purchased this book to help me understand a family member's issues with not knowing her father. It really gave me much needed insight on how this dilema impacts children.I have several other children in my family who will benefit from the knowledge I have gained from this book as they too begin to question the issue of their father's absence from their lives. It's a big issue in our country and couples should truly realize the effects not having a father present in their lives will have on children and make sure both partners are truly commited to a child long before conception.

5-0 out of 5 stars empowering guide to living well in spite of father loss issues
If you're wondering why you settle for dead end relationships, alienate loved ones, or just have trouble relating in general, this book is for you. It provided me with the facts and explanations of behavior that a year of therapy had barely touched on. It also reads very well. Truly an empowering guide to living well in spite of father loss issues.

3-0 out of 5 stars It started out good....
At first I was amazed at the accuracy to which the author's own experience mirrored mine.I had wondered for a long time about why my personal relationships were as difficult as they were. This book did explain a lot of feelings I had and things I had done.Unfortunately, it didn't seem to offer any solution.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best to start out with
Euthanasia and Physician Assisted Suicide: For and Against is a book written by three well-known philosophers and ethicists: Gerald Dworkin, R.G. Frey and Sissela Bok. This book discusses the moral issues of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. The book is broken down into two parts, the first part contains arguments for euthanasia and assisted suicide and the second part is against.

5-0 out of 5 stars A step in a healing direction
When I first picked up this book, I thought, "Is it going to be good?," and I was pleasantly surprised. It helped me reach a horizon of encouragement to continue on after I lost a loved one. It sought to gently answer the questions and anger many people have in a state of mourning. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who is looking for comfort on a page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comforting book
This book can heal the wounded soul.It is an eloquent reminder that when we suffer we do not suffer alone.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Gift for Holiday Grief
The format of this book is "just right" for grievers. Short sections allow the reader to read as little or as much as they can handle at one sitting. This is an excellent gift for the seasons of Fall and Winter when society inundates us with holiday celebrations and togetherness. Since September 11, 2001, this book ought to become a best-seller. I've given out at least a dozen copies to family and friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful and Comforting Book
"The death of a loved one is, for most of us, the most profound emotional experience we will ever have to endure," writes Carol Staudacher in her book, A Time To Grieve. My dad died in 2001 and my brother died in 2002, and I was overwhelmed with grief.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Time to Grieve
One of the best of this genre -- may be read a page at a time, which is very helpful for grievers who are struggling with focus and concentration in the early days.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good and helpful book
I was searching for a book to help a friend of mine whose husband died suddenly. I am one of those skeptics of self-help books in grief counselling; many seem to offer little useful advice, suggest 'recipe-like' interventions or even drift to patronizing. Then I came across "A Time to Grieve: Meditations for Healing After the Death of a Loved One". A short reading had me order two copies for good friends of mine going through a very tough time in their lives. Even though logically one knows one is not alone in losing a loved one, it means little when you yourself are suffering the pain of loss. This book gives thoughts and feelings from people who have suffered a loss and follows the real experience with advice on how to work through the moments or hours or days and move on in the healing process. It is well written and the prose are gentle. It is a comforting book and gives one pause to think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a gift!
James Van Praagh is able to cover all aspects of loss in life, from death of a loved one to loosing a job.I found it extemely helpful for many expierences in my life and also for those I may face in the future. I recommend this book to anyone, whether you believe in life after death or not, his knowledge and compassion is uplifting and reasuring.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
There are some excellent books to read if you are suffering from grief, but this isn't one of them. It is missing the ring of truth, but even if you do believe Van Praagh (a big hurdle for me), it's very awkwardly written in that it tries to cast him as some sort of bereavement counselor, which doesn't work, at least not for me. Instead read Closer to the Light by Melvin Morse, M.D. (which gives examples of near death experiences of children) and Hello From Heaven by Bill and Judy Guggenheim (which simply offers hundreds of after death communications people have submitted to them). These books are very convincing, even to the skeptic, and very comforting. Another book, The Afterlife Experiments by researcher Gary Schwartz, Ph.D. is an excellent introduction to several good psychics who have done well in various test situations, often delivering stunning hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Book for Dealing with Grief
James Van Praagh is a human being filled with compassion, empathy and understanding. His aim as a psychic is to assure those experiencing any form of grief that there are ways to deal with it, and he records these ways in this well-written and easy to understand book. We are assured that grieving is a natural process, and that ultimately, for those whom we've lost in death, we most assuredly will meet again. A book for helping everyone cope with the fact of loss in our lives. A sourcebook for all... ... Read more
