5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted
When I bought this book I didn't know how it would change my life... It's a lovely book. Susan knows how to be incisive when she needs to, but still she's lovely in this moments. I've considered suicide many times in my life, I'm lucky I never got really to act upon my thoughts...
4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
I wish I'd had a copy of this book when I was suicidal. It's full of simple, practical ideas for keeping yourself safe and beginning to feel better. The crisis plan is especially good, and easy to follow even when you find it hard to think straight. The only reason I gave this book four stars rather than five is that I came across it after I'd recovered, and haven't tried out all of its techniques myself - but from my experience of what did help me, they're all excellent.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Helpful Overall
I am thrilled that proceeds from this book are being donated to 1-800-SUICIDE, a very useful resource. It seems the author suffered more from ideation rather than true suicidality; I didn't find any novel ideas for addressing the latter. Many suggestions presuppose the presence of a support system and financial resources, things lacking for many suicidal people. Most of the Tricks are simply common sense and seem trite to a genuinely suicidal reader. Though glad she made it through her difficult times, I'm still looking for a helpful guide for the chronically suicidal folks who are in grave danger of dying at their own hands. ... Read more

i bought this for my dad after my mom died.i was dissapointed. it should be titled 'when a man dies' with advice like 'wake up each morning and put on some lipstick' it is clearly written with a woman reader in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Gift from the Heart!
I know, as a grief therapist, that not everyone can express themselves easily in a group, or even in a one-to-one setting with a therapist like myself. That's why I love this book!It can probably do a better job with the healing process than myself or other therapists (well, at least it is a great help to what we do!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps us lighten the load of life on a daily basis.
Educational and entertaining, this book relays convincing evidence as to the psychological and physiological benefits of humor. The author gives concrete and helpgful techniques and suggestions as to how we can begin to bring more joy and laughter into our lives. Lots of humorous anecdotes and examples bring the points home.I found this book informative and motivational.

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple item for the humor lover's bookshelf
Since reading this book in 1994, I have used it as a reference for my life AND work. Using a warm and witty style of writing, Allen teaches us the physiological and emotional benefits of mirth. My favorite chapter title is "Strike While the Irony is Hot!"So clever!! I recommend this book to friends who are facing life challenges and to everyone who attends my workshops. On a more personal note, since embracing The Healing Power of Humor, I felt freer to add a little levity to my Aunt Alice's funeral. My family was amazingly grateful.Me too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
Grief, whether parents, spouse, friend, is devastating and complicated.Finding "the right" comfort for the bereaved is challenging. However, this book is extremely helpful, no matter what circumstances. When my mother died, I was overwhelmed with fatigue, and unbelievable loss.A friend sent me this book.A chapter a day is manageable...and so I began my "journey."Some days I read and meditated on several chapters. At the end of 4 months, one day I woke up, feeling refreshed, and NOT FATIGUED any more!It was mind-boggling!Amazing.No one had prepared me for the physical stages of grief. This book does more than soothe the soul; it gives shared experiences in order to understand the deep process of grieving.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for those who are not devout Christians.
I have read several books on grief since my husband died four months ago at the age of 42. While this book has a few good comforting vignettes to share, the references to God in each chapter were not helpful. After the story of each person's grief, each chapter ends with a paragraph or two describing how to get through grief is to "trust in God". I found a much better book to be "Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul".

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is God-sent!
finally, i found TRUE company through this book! my husband was killed in iraq last year and i really had a difficult time recovering; some days i'm ok, some days i'm not.. but this book (among the 6 Grief books i bought) is by far the best one.. highly recommended!! it puts into words the things i couldn't seem to express fully because of the heaviness i feel.. it's only a page or two a day of reading, and it tackles almost all topics involved in the grieving process in a Christian perspective (there's no other guaranteed way than the Christian-perspective way, believe me). i don't think i still need the other books i bought, this one's enough to keep me going.. Stay blessed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mosby's Textbook for Long-term care Nursing Assistants
I bought this book along with other recommended reference booksfor CNAs, and in my opinion this one is the best.It is absolutely a pleasure to read, easy to follow procedures, great color pictures and illustrations.Very user-friendly format.I was actually looking forward to study time using this book.2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date in body mechanics/transfers/safety
As a nursing instructor working closely with rehab we found this book out of date, with no changes in transfers, body mechanics that have been updated for safety throughout the years. The demos show transfers with staff using poor body mechanics, leaning over residents, not using lower legs using lower back muscles. Moving a person to the side of the bed technique demonstratess segmental movement taking the resident out of body alignment. There are up to date techniques for this. Mercury thermometers are no longer used. A two person transfer to the wheelchair in this book involves picking up the resident from the back and lifting with someone in the front with the legs. if a resident needs this then a hoyer a must. For back safety! The Essentials of Nursing Assistants by Mosby Second Edition, includes the same outdated pictures and demonstrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars I needed this
I did not lose my mother from death but from a custody battle and have not seen her since I was 4 years old.Recently I gave birth to my own daughter and from the day I found out I was pregnant with her I could not believe how much grief, hurt, and confusion that went through me.It was almost as if all of those childhood pains from losing my mother surfaced the day my daughter was born.I felt cluless. I raised a son just fine but once I had my daughter I questioned so many things and longed for that motherly affection I so long ago lost. This book was a GOD SEND to me because I felt like I was the only one to feel this way.It helped me to understand these feelings of confusion were normal. Thank you for this book Hope!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many variables to hold being motherless as the sole responsible factor....
Being motherless affects so much of who I am; I realized this through Edelman's previous book, "Motherless Daughters". I laughed and cried my way through the pages of that book, so I was intrigued by the publication of "Motherless Mothers".
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Hope Edelman
Any mother that is trying to navigate the world of parenting without her own mother there to guide her needs to read this book!! I love Edelman's writing style - plain, frank and to the point. Many times reading this book I felt like she was talking right to me....she has captured the profound loss all of us motherless mothers feel. She has a nice balance of writing about her own loss and feelings, along with the experiences of other motherless mothers around the country, with just enough research and statistics thrown in to not be boring. This is a compelling, sometimes heart-wrenching read, but any motherless mother will take comfort while reading this book in knowing that they are not alone. The late Philip Simmons left the world a wonderful gift with this book. I pulled it off the shelf in a very low time and found it to be inspiring in many ways. Simmons was a creative writing teacher and it shows in this work, which is full of beautiful images as well as beautiful ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writers are like bears...
These short essays are gems of style and content.Phillip Simmons was not an existentialist railing against his suffering, but a Stoic/Buddhist personality that loved his family and loved to climb mountains. He died in 2002.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spiritual death
Often the most profound healing took place in those who did eventually die, but their deaths were transformed into experiences of beauty and grace. Levine concluded that real healing occurred when the heart was opened and there was a balanced integration of body, mind, heart, and soul.

I was skimming the stacks in the Grief section when "The Orphaned Adult" caught my eye. What a cold, harsh title, I thought - yet I was compelled to read it.Until then, I'd never come across a book written specifically for those who have lost both parents, and it was good to see that someone had finally addressed this life-changing event. What took so long?
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
My mom died a year ago. I read many books in an attempt to understand and cope with my feelings. This book stood out as the very best. I read and reread it and even read it a year later. I have given it to several friends going through their own loss of parents and all have given it high marks.

I thought "orphaned adult" was my phrase and my unique emotional state following the deaths of both of my parents within a year--and at 56, I was uncomfortable with the depth of my grief and feeling of child-like despair at their absences. It was consumming without visible end.Levy gives words to those feelings and context to that grief and child-like despair, whatever your age.And he shines a light that is true in his eiplogue--there WILL be a day when you awake and (she) is not the first thing you think of . . . when you go about your business and it is an hour, three hours . . before something brings her to mind. You don't forget, but you start living your life again in memory and love.I cannot recommend this book enough ........... ... Editorial Review

A practical guide for coping with the loss of a parent, this book was written by a journalist who has lost both. Edward Myers makes it clear that no matter how old we are, the death of a parent can be devastating, evoking intense and complex feelings that have long-lasting implications. Comprised of advice from therapists, practices for self-help groups and first-person accounts, Myers covers the grieving process and differentiates between the impact of sudden death and slow decline. He also offers advice for funeral planning, dividing personal property and resolving feelings such as guilt, shame and isolation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book if Your Parent Is Ill ... DON'T Wait!!!
My beloved mother recently died and this book was recommended to me by the hospice counselors. I only wish I had known about it in the months prior to Mom's death. If you have a parent who is suffering a potentially long illness, especially with increasingly extensive care and nursing needs, buy this book NOW -- don't wait!It offers many helpful resources on the practical sideas well as offering comfort and understanding. As the author says, "There is perhaps no greater source of needless frustration during a family crisis than the belief that you are dealing with it entirely alone. Even the most competent adult can be worn down..."He then proceeds to provide resources in the Appendix, including organizations and resources to find "Information on Death and Dying", "Information on Aging and Care of the Aging" (including the organization called Children of Aging Parents...which I wish I had known about earlier), "Information About Health Issues", "Information on Alcohol and Drug Abuse", "Information on Hospice Care", "Information on Funeral and Memorial Societies", "Information on Living Wills and Organ Donation", "Information on Suicide Prevention and Counseling", "Information on Widowhood", "Information on Assistance for Women", among other topics. If it's too late for that, you will also find this book helpful as it presents compassionate advice for coping with the emotional and practical aspects of losing a parent. Everyone's story and emotional handling of this life-changing event is unique, but you will inevitably find yourself in some of the examples that the author uses. In a time like this, it's comforting to know you're not alone and it is possible to cope. Another book with a different approach, but which is also comforting is "How to Survive the Loss of a Parent" by Lois F. Akner, CSW. ... Read more

I would recommend this book not only for those who are experiencing the horrific pain associated with grief, but also for those who love them. Many of my friends and family members have bought Kathleen O'Hara's book and have gained a better understanding of what I and my family are going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I have never had a doubt in my mind that babies and young children that die go to heaven. To me, it has always been a matter of common sense. Just knowing about God's character has always been proof enough for me. His divine grace knows no bounds. His mercy is greater than His wrath. Coming to earth in human form to die for our sins, even though we don't deserve it, is the greatest proof of this. Therefore, I have always believed that His grace covers those that have not yet developed the intelligence to distinguish between right and wrong. However, I wanted my beliefs to be based on more than just my own intuition. I wanted Scriptural proof beyond the concepts of God's unfailing love and all encompassing grace. Unfortunately, I am no theologian. As such, I often need help in looking for the answers I seek within Scripture. Thankfully, John MacArthur has published this well-researched and theologically sound book on the subject of infant death.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hope
My wife and I lost our precious daughter Hope after only thirty mintues with her.I knew a little about what the bible teaches on the subjects and where to find the basics, so I knew that she was with God.I still I found this book to be extremely helpful in fleshing out the whole topic and answering some questions I could not find the answers to on my own.I especially admired how Dr. MacArthur relied on Scripture for his entire argument. There was no wishful thinking in this volume just sound biblical teaching.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but has some views that are clearly Protestant
As a Catholic trying to cope with the loss of a child, I'd say this book is 99% wonderful and 1% that I'm not in agreement with. This is clearly biblically Protestant in which there are "missing links".Although I completely agree that the Lord is merciful towards babies and innocent young children, I do not agree with what he states about instant Heaven with adults and older children. If you are Catholic or Orthodox, take this into mind and discernment that this is not in junction with the teaching of our Church. Otherwise its a wonderful tool in knowing that our babies are very much alive in Heaven waiting for their families. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reading for children!
My 9 year-old son recently lost his father and he was not talking to me or any family members about his feelings. This book was very thorough for a young person and it helped him to open dialogue with me and start his grieving process. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Basic Questions of A Child Experiencing A Death
This book provides brief and blunt answers to questions many children may have and adults may not consider - it touches on 'What is a Memorial Service', 'Where does the person go', 'Am I Going To Die Too?', 'Is the Death My Fault' as well as common feelings experienced while grieving. Each topic is brief and written for a child.
1-0 out of 5 stars Childish illustration paired with Blunt realism.
I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old, she has never seen it. I found it too clinical, and not at all what I had imagined having read the other reviews. The cartoons seemed aimed at my daughters age group, yet the writing is in my opinion, not for little ones. I showed this book to my twelve year old niece, thinking maybe the target was more in her age range. Her response was an incredulous "isnt this supposed to make you feel better!?"... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Lost
This book was a wonderful tool in coping with a parents loss of a child. It was given to me when my husband and I lost our youngest daughter seven years ago and I have had several people that I know loose their own child and I gave the book to them.I never received a response from one of the couples but the most recent book that I bought the mother has thank me over and over again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too raw
I found this book too raw to finish reading, and left me feeling totally hopeless about whether or not I would survive.I started reading this book just a few weeks after my son's death; perhaps if I had waited I would have found it more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Professional, Well Written
Since the death of my son in 2003, I have read many books on bereavement. This is one of the best. It is inclusive for many causes of death and it covers the whole topic in a compassionate way. I have given this book to others who have lost a child, but I keep one for reference. This is a book to refer back to and highlight the points that you want to remember. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Be informed
Think you or your parent don't need a health care proxy?Think again, and use Sharon Kaufman's AND A TIME TO DIE to help you realize just how important it is to determine the direction you want your life to take at its conclusion, and to have someone who understands your wishes and can speak for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most valuable books I've read this year
I am a medical ethicist, and as I read Kaufman's "And a Time to Die" I found myself thinking back to the hospital case consultations I've been involved in. Her observations and conclusions helped me to piece together a much more detailed picture of what's really going on in those situations. Her discussion of pathways, time pressures, reimbursement concerns, and the use of language all ring true. Those who are familiar with hospital settings will recognize much of what Kaufman has observed (a fact that another reviewer objects to), but I believe that she is able to take a "bird's eye view" of these issues in a way that organizes and extends our understanding.
3-0 out of 5 stars Circles, But Never Lands
The author of this book goes inside the modern American hospital system as an anthropologist, and reports what takes place there when the system is confronted with a terminally ill patient. She examines what cultural imperatives are being brought to bear there to make this an increasingly problematic and decidedly "unnatural" process.
